Carleson and Hunt proved that the space of functions with almost everywhere convergent Fourier series contains Lp (p > l) as a subspace. We shall give two kinds of subspaces of the spaces of functions with everywhere convergent or uniformly convergent Fourier series.

This paper originated with our interest in the open question “If every pure subgroup of an LCA group G is closed, must G be discrete ?” that was raised by Armacost. The answer was surprisingly easy, but led to some interesting questions. We attempted to characterise those LCA groups that contain a proper pure dense subgroup, and found that every non-discrete torsion-free LCA group contains a proper pure dense subgroup; so does every non-discrete infinite self-dual torsion LCA group. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a torsion LCA group to contain a proper pure dense subgroup.

In this paper we study the boundedness of the weighted Bergman projections on the weighted subspaces of Bergman spaces and the Lipschitz spaces on the unit ball and the unit polydisc.

Let f(z) be an n-valued algebroid function of finite lower order μ. In this paper, we give some further results on the deficiencies of f(z). Particularly if 0 ≤ μ ≤ 1/2, the corresponding result is best possible.

We prove metric regularity results for both single-valued maps and set-valued maps defined between metric spaces.

We find topological conditions on a space X under which the left (right, or two-sided) uniformity of the free topological group F(X) induces the universal uniformity or the product uniformity ux × ux on the square of X. Special attention is given to kω metrisable spaces. The main technical tool in the paper is an extension of certain continuous pseudometrics from X2 to F(X) considered by the author in the previous volume of this journal.

In this paper, we completely determine the commutativity of two Toeplitz operators on the harmonic Bergman space with integrable quasihomogeneous symbols, one of which is of the form $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}e^{ik\theta }r^{\, {m}}$. As an application, the problem of when their product is again a Toeplitz operator is solved. In particular, Toeplitz operators with bounded symbols on the harmonic Bergman space commute with $T_{e^{ik\theta }r^{\, {m}}}$ only in trivial cases, which appears quite different from results on analytic Bergman space in Čučković and Rao [‘Mellin transform, monomial symbols, and commuting Toeplitz operators’, J. Funct. Anal.154 (1998), 195–214].

We study the behaviour of the transfinite diameter of regular polygons of fixed diameter, as a function of the number of their vertices.

We generalize the main result of the paper by Bennett and Mulholland [‘On the diophantine equation xn+yn=2αpz2’, C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Soc. R. Can.28 (2006), 6–11] concerning the solubility of the diophantine equation xn+yn=2αpz2. We also demonstrate, by way of examples, that questions about solubility of a class of diophantine equations of type (3,3,p) or (4,2,p) can be reduced, in certain cases, to studying several equations of the type (p,p,2).

Euclid is a well-known two-player impartial combinatorial game. A position in Euclid is a pair of positive integers and the players move alternately by subtracting a positive integer multiple of one of the integers from the other integer without making the result negative. The player who makes the last move wins. There is a variation of Euclid due to Grossman in which the game stops when the two entries are equal. We examine a further variation which we called M-Euclid where the game stops when one of the entries is a positive integer multiple of the other. We solve the Sprague–Grundy function for M-Euclid and compare the Sprague–Grundy functions of the three games.

There is a small error in the proof of Lemma 1 [1], namely, that there may not be a subsequence of the sequence {Φn} converging to Φ in the weak*-topology. Thus equation (5) should read: In view of continuity of Pk we have

The same error occurs in the proof of Theorem 1 and Lemma 2 also. Therefore, equation (7) should read

All the same the results are not affected by the above error.

Let $\eta (G)$ be the number of conjugacy classes of maximal cyclic subgroups of G. We prove that if G is a p-group of order $p^n$ and nilpotence class l, then $\eta (G)$ is bounded below by a linear function in $n/l$ .

A closure algebra is a set X with a closure operator C defined on it. It is possible to construct a topology τ on MX, the family of maximal, proper, closed subsets of X, and then to examine the relationship between the algebraic structure of (X, C) and the topological structure of the dual space (MX τ) This paper describes the algebraic conditions which are necessary and sufficient for the dual space to be separable metric and metric respectively.

Let Aq=k〈x,y〉/(x2,xy+qyx,y2) be the quantum exterior algebra over a field k with , and let Λq be the ℤ2×ℤ2-Galois covering of Aq. In this paper the minimal projective bimodule resolution of Λq is constructed explicitly, and from it we can calculate the k-dimensions of all Hochschild homology and cohomology groups of Λq. Moreover, the cyclic homology of Λq can be calculated in the case where the underlying field is of characteristic zero.

We develop some asymptotics for a kernel function introduced by Kohnen and use them to estimate the number of normalised Hecke eigenforms in $S_k(\Gamma _0(1))$ whose L-values are simultaneously nonvanishing at a given pair of points each of which lies inside the critical strip.

Let p be a prime and d, e positive integers. We prove that a regular d-generator metabelian p-group whose commutator subgroup has exponent pe has nilpotency class at most e(p – 2) + 1 unless e = 1, d > 2, p > 2 when the class can be p and these bounds are best possible.

The main result in the earlier paper (by the first author) is improved as follows. The number of odd multiperfect numbers with at most $r$ distinct prime factors is bounded by ${4}^{{r}^{2} } / {2}^{r+ 2} (r- 1)!$.
