Let $G$ be a locally compact amenable group and $A(G)$ and $B(G)$ be the Fourier and the Fourier–Stieltjes algebras of $G,$ respectively. For a power bounded element $u$ of $B(G)$, let ${\mathcal{E}}_{u}:=\{g\in G:|u(g)|=1\}$. We prove some convergence theorems for iterates of multipliers in Fourier algebras.

(a) If $\Vert u\Vert _{B(G)}\leq 1$, then $\lim _{n\rightarrow \infty }\Vert u^{n}v\Vert _{A(G)}=\text{dist}(v,I_{{\mathcal{E}}_{u}})\text{ for }v\in A(G)$, where $I_{{\mathcal{E}}_{u}}=\{v\in A(G):v({\mathcal{E}}_{u})=\{0\}\}$.

(b) The sequence $\{u^{n}v\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ converges for every $v\in A(G)$ if and only if ${\mathcal{E}}_{u}$ is clopen and $u({\mathcal{E}}_{u})=\{1\}.$

(c) If the sequence $\{u^{n}v\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ converges weakly in $A(G)$ for some $v\in A(G)$, then it converges strongly.

This is proved: if B is a commutative Banach algebra with identity, then the non-invertible elements of B are weakly dense in B if and only if the maximal ideal space of B is infinite.

The topology of a topological group in which the intersection of open sets is open is uniquely determined by a normal subgroup, and the group is uniquely an extension of an indiscrete group by a discrete group. This was proved by M.C. Thornton under the additional hypothesis that the group is a torsion group. The proofs here given make the more general facts almost trivial.

In this paper, we characterize quadratic number fields possessing unique factorization in terms of the power cancellation property of torsion-free rank-two abelian groups, in terms of Σ-unique decomposition, in terms of a pair of point set topological properties of Eilenberg–Mac Lane spaces, and in terms of the sequence of rational primes. We give a complete set of topological invariants of abelian groups, we characterize those abelian groups that have the power cancellation property in the category of abelian groups, and we characterize those abelian groups that have Σ-unique decomposition. Our methods can be used to characterize any direct sum decomposition property of an abelian group.

We extend three well-known facts of Fourier series on the disc to Fourier series on the torus, a theorem of Riesz, a theorem of Szegö, and the fact that any function in H1 can be factored as the product of two functions in H2. Here the rôle of negative integers is played by the lattice points in the third quadrant. In earlier extensions of these theorems this rôle was played by half-planes.

We consider the following non-linear nonautonomous second order differential equation

where h(x) is continuous, f, p are continuous and periodic with respect to t of period w. Using the Leray-Schauder fixed point technique we prove that the above equation possesses at least one non-trivial periodic solution of period w.

An algebra has the Howson property if the intersection of any two finitely generated subalgebras is again finitely generated. A simple necessary and sufficient condition is given for the Howson property to hold on an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents. In addition, it is shown that any monogenic inverse semigroup has the Howson property.

For every Banach space X there is a natural non-linear mapping from X into its dual X*. It is shown that if this mapping is a homeomorphism then it is onto X* and X is reflexive.

In this paper, we consider certain double series analogous to Tornheim’s double series and real analytic Eisenstein series. By computing double integrals in two ways, we express the double series as a sum of products of polylogarithms. The technique generalises one given by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto. Evaluating the double series at particular points gives new evaluations for certain double series in terms of values of the Riemann zeta function and the dilogarithm which are analogues of formulas of Mordell and Goncharov.

In this paper we discuss in some detail the difference equations arising in the discretization of some second-order differential equations. We also show how such difference problems can be solved exactly.

In this paper we study the additive group structure of subdirectly irreducible rings and their hearts. We give and example of a torsion-free, non-reduced abelian group which is not the underlying additive group of any associative subdirectly irreducible ring. It is a counterexample to a theorem in Feigelstock's book “Additive Groups of Rings.”

In this paper a new family of quotients of the triangle group < x, y, z | x2 = y3 = z7 = xyz = 1 > is obtained. It is shown that for every positive integer m divisible by 3 there is a Hurwitz group of order 504m6 having a centre of size 3, and as a consequence there is a Riemann surface of genus 6m6 + 1 with the maximum possible number of automorphisms.

Let $b_{3,5}(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ into parts that are not multiples of 3 or 5. We establish several infinite families of congruences modulo 2 for $b_{3,5}(n)$. In the process, we also prove numerous parity results for broken 7-diamond partitions.

Schneider (Math. Nachr. 60 (1974), 167–180) has established the following result. Consider the mixed type equation

Then the Tricomi Problem (T): L[u] = f with has a weak solution u ∈ L2(Ḡ) and the Adjoint Tricomi Problem (T+): L+[w] = f with has at most one semistrong solution.

In this present paper we get the above result of Schneider in a much more generalized way, so that here our uniqueness theorem and existence results include cases where S(x, y) may be negative in G2.

Let $G$ be a finite group and ${\rm\Gamma}$ a $G$-symmetric graph. Suppose that $G$ is imprimitive on $V({\rm\Gamma})$ with $B$ a block of imprimitivity and ${\mathcal{B}}:=\{B^{g};g\in G\}$ a system of imprimitivity of $G$ on $V({\rm\Gamma})$. Define ${\rm\Gamma}_{{\mathcal{B}}}$ to be the graph with vertex set ${\mathcal{B}}$ such that two blocks $B,C\in {\mathcal{B}}$ are adjacent if and only if there exists at least one edge of ${\rm\Gamma}$ joining a vertex in $B$ and a vertex in $C$. Xu and Zhou [‘Symmetric graphs with 2-arc-transitive quotients’, J. Aust. Math. Soc. 96 (2014), 275–288] obtained necessary conditions under which the graph ${\rm\Gamma}_{{\mathcal{B}}}$ is 2-arc-transitive. In this paper, we completely settle one of the cases defined by certain parameters connected to ${\rm\Gamma}$ and ${\mathcal{B}}$ and show that there is a unique graph corresponding to this case.
