A new occurrence of varlamoffite is described, and the status of this species is considered; the term is best employed for cryptocrystalline yellowish material consisting predominantly of Sn and H20 that may yield a diffuse powder pattern comparable to, or closely resembling that of cassiterite, but does yield a powder pattern identical with that of cassiterite after heat-treatment at about 1200° C. A new mineral, malayaite, CaSnSiO5, is briefly described; it is isostructural with sphene.

The chemical analyses, structural formulae, and trace element data are presented for 18 orthopyroxenes and 9 clinopyroxenes from the charnockitie rocks of Kondapalli, Andhra Pradesh, India. The chemistry of these pyroxenes is discussed and conclusions are drawn. The data are compared with the similar data available for the pyroxenes of the charnockites of the type area near Madras, some 200 miles south of Kondapalli. The element-distributional relationships between the coexisting pyroxenes are discussed and inferences are made regarding the temperature of crystallization of charnockite pyroxenes.

An X-ray investigation has been made of synthetic pyroxenes in the system acmite-diopside, crystallized at 750° C and 1000 kg/cm2 water-vapour pressure. Lattice parameters of these pyroxenes have been determined by least squares analyses of powder diffraction patterns and show an approximately linear relationship with composition, plotted as weight per cent. A rapid X-ray method has also been devised for the determination of the compositions of pyroxenes of this series.

Phengite 3T (Dora-Maira massif, Italian western Alps), with chemical composition K0.96Na0.01Al1.44Mg0.56(Si3.59 Al0.41)O10(OH)2 has been investigated using powder neutron diffraction, at the ILL (Institut Laue-Langevin) Facility, on the D2B diffractometer. Data sets were collected at 293 and 873 K, and the present results are compared with those obtained previously using the time-of-flight (TOF) technique, on the same compound. In the octahedral sheet, Al tends to order into the M2 site, in accordance with the measurements mentioned above, whereas the Al/Si tetrahedral ordering we observe (i.e. Si fully into T1 site) is at variance with that determined previously. These discrepancies are ascribed to the presence of talc impurities in the sample used previously (∼6 wt.%), which affected the results obtained.

A deposit of chrysoberyl (BeAl2O4), including the variety alexandrite, occurs near Dowerin, in the southwestern region of the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. The deposit is situated in the northern part of the Lake Grace Terrain, a crustal component of the southwestern Yilgarn Craton, in granulite-facies gneisses (2640–2649 Ma; T = 700°C, P <6 kbar) adjacent to the margin of the Kellerberrin Batholith (2587±25 Ma). Beryllium mineralization at Dowerin occurs in plagioclase-quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss and cross-cutting tourmaline-plagioclase veins situated adjacent to lenses of actinolite-cummingtonite-phlogopite schist. Crystals of chrysoberyl (0.15–1.74 wt.% Cr2O3; 2.25–3.23 wt.% FeO; trace–0.13 wt.% ZnO; SiO2 <0.05 wt.%) are found embedded in almandine or plagioclase, and closely intergrown with biotite and/or zincian hercynite in the host-rock gneiss. Minor Cr and Fe in the alexandrite variety of chrysoberyl were possibly derived from associated zincian hercynite and/or almandine. Trace beryl (0.04–0.20 wt.% Cr2O3; 0.54–0.71 wt.% FeO; trace– 0.22 wt.% Na2O; 0.1–0.71 wt.% MgO) occurs as anhedral interstital grains between crystals of chrysoberyl, plagioclase and biotite, and as rare inclusions in chrysoberyl. Textural and mineral chemical evidence suggests that chrysoberyl and zincian spinels (chromite to hercynite containing from 2–8 wt.% ZnO) formed during granulite-facies regional metamorphism and probably pre-dated the formation of metamorphic tourmaline-plagioclase veins during the same metamorphic episode. The Be, B and Zn required to form chrysoberyl, beryl, tourmaline and zincian spinels may have been released by metamorphic reactions in host-rock metapelites during prograde granulite-facies metamorphism.

The tin-bearing muscovite granite from Ervedosa contains unzoned primary muscovite. This Hercynian S-type granite was hydrothermally altered at the stanniferous quartz vein walls and contains three types of muscovite: (1) very small unzoned muscovite replacing albite; (2) small unzoned hydrothermal muscovite replacing K-feldspar and quartz; and (3) zoned subhedral muscovite.

In the zoned muscovite, the core has a composition similar to that of magmatic muscovite from the unaltered granite, while the rim has a composition similar to that of hydrothermal muscovite replacing K-feldspar and quartz in the altered granite. The rim corresponds to a late overgrowth richer in the celadonitic component than the core. Infiltrated mineralizing fluids reacted with biotite and K-feldspar of the unaltered granite. We interpret the rim of muscovite to have precipitated from these solutions.

Intruded into the Palaeogene lava field and underlying Moine (Neoproterozoic) crystalline basement rocks around Loch Scridain, Isle of Mull, Scotland, is a suite of high-level, inclined, xenolithic sheets, ranging in composition from basalt, through andesite and dacite, to rhyolite. These sheets, associated with the Mull central volcano, were emplaced post 55 Ma. As well as numerous crustal xenoliths, the more basic members of the complex contain a diverse suite of ultrabasic and basic xenoliths. Xenolith types include feldspathic peridotite with cumulus olivine, pyroxenite, gabbro with cumulus plagioclase and cumulus clinopyroxene, and pure anorthosite. Mineralogical data, coupled with whole-rock major- and trace-element data from a small number of the xenoliths suggest that the xenoliths represent early-formed cumulates cognate with their host basalts. Sr and Nd isotope data from the xenoliths confirms the cognate origin, and also shows that the basic magmas suffered crustal contamination at an early stage.

Fluorcalciomicrolite, (Ca, Na, ☐)2Ta2O6F, is a new microlite-group, pyrochlore supergroup mineral approved by the CNMNC (IMA 2012-036). It occurs as an accessory mineral in the Volta Grande pegmatite, Nazareno, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Associated minerals include: microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, spodumene, “lepidolite”, cassiterite, tantalite-(Mn), monazite-(Ce), fluorite, “apatite”, beryl, “garnet” , epidote, magnetite, gahnite, zircon, “tourmaline” , bityite, hydrokenomicrolite, and other microlite-group minerals under study. Fluorcalciomicrolite occurs as euhedral, untwinned, octahedral crystals 0.1–1.5 mm in size, occasionally modified by rhombododecahedral faces. The crystals are colourless and translucent; the streak is white, and the lustre is adamantine to resinous. It does not fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Mohs' hardness is 4½–5, tenacity is brittle. Cleavage is not observed; fracture is conchoidal. The calculated density is 6.160 g/cm3. The mineral is isotropic, ncalc. = 1.992. The Raman spectrum is dominated by bands of B–X octahedral bond stretching and X–B–X bending modes. The chemical composition (n = 6) is (by wavelength dispersive spectroscopy, H2O calculated to obtain charge balance, wt.%): Na2O 4.68, CaO 11.24, MnO 0.01, SrO 0.04, BaO 0.02, SnO20.63, UO20.02, Nb2O53.47, Ta2O576.02, F 2.80, H2O 0.48, O=F–1.18, total 98.23. The empirical formula, based on 2 cations at the B site, is (Ca1.07Na0.81☐0.12)Σ2.00(Ta1.84Nb0.14Sn0.02)Σ2.00[O5.93(OH)0.07]6.00[F0.79(OH)0.21]. The strongest eight X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 5.997(59)(111), 3.138(83)(311), 3.005(100)(222), 2.602(29)(400), 2.004(23)(511), 1.841(23)(440), 1.589(25)(533), and 1.504(24)(444). The crystal structure refinement (R1 = 0.0132) gave the following data: cubic, Fdm, a = 10.4191(6) Å, V = 1131.07(11) Å3, Z = 8.

Carbonated calcium apatites doped with a monovalent cation (Li+, Na+, or K+) or a divalent cation (Mg2+ or Zn2+) were prepared in aqueous solution and analysed by powder X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The hypothesis that the location of carbonate in the apatite structure, either in place of hydroxide ions in the c-axis channels (A-type substitution) or in place of phosphate (B-type substitution), is affected by the solution energetics of the cation (specifically its enthalpy of hydration) was strengthened by the observation of larger amounts of Atype carbonate in apatites containing the monovalent cations in aqueous solution. It is shown that cations with low negative enthalpies of hydration favour A-type substitution, whereas cations with higher negative hydration enthalpies, such as divalent cations (Mg2+, Zn2+), favour B-type substitution.

Orbicules in diorite from the Grenville Front zone of eastern Labrador are defined by shell structures alternately enriched and depleted in biotite, epidote and magnetite. Hornblende occurs locally in orbicule cores and the matrix, but not in the shells. The shells enclose plagioclase-rich (An40–45), leucodioritic cores containing biotite, epidote, magnetite and/or hornblende-bearing mafic clots. The matrix of the orbicules is mineralogically-similar to the orbicule cores, but is mesocratic, and contains relatively sodic plagioclase and accessory quartz and K-feldspar. In places, hornblende contains quartz oikocrysts, implying the resorption of early-formed clinopyroxene, and is rimmed by biotite and epidote. The latter phases also occur as inclusions in quartz-free hornblende interpreted to have crystallized directly from the magma. Epidote has a pistacite content of 21 to 26 and occurs as (1) tiny, idiomorphic crystals (‘epidote I’) enclosed by plagioclase or hornblende, and (2) relatively large (to 1 mm) grains with vermicular textures (‘epidote II’), particularly where in mutual contact with biotite (or hornblende) and plagioclase. These microstructures suggest that epidote is a magmatic phase which formed by direct crystallization from the magma, and by reaction of previously-formed minerals with the magma.

The following approximate paragenetic sequence has been inferred for orbicule cores and the matrix: clinopyroxene (clinopyroxene resorbed [→ poikilitic hornblende]), epidote I, Ca-Na plagioclase, biotite, hornblende (biotite and/or hornblende ± plagioclase resorbed [→ epidote II]), quartz + K-feldspar. Biotite compositions became progressively more Fe-rich during crystallization (XMg ⋍ 0.6 → 0.4), and the first-formed plagioclase (inclusions in quartz-free hornblende in orbicule cores) is more calcic (An51) than the last (matrix grains: An35).

The appearance of epidote early in the crystallization history of the diorite testifies to elevated PH2O and PTotal (PT). The most aluminous hornblende indicates maximum PT of 5 to 6 kbar. Orbicule shell structures are interpreted to have crystallized from supercooled boundary layers enclosing water-saturated globules within the dioritic magma. Although sufficient to suppress the formation of hornblende in the shell structures, the extent of magma supercooling did not permit the development of comb layering in the orbicules. Supercooling is attributed to an influx into the magma of water from an unidentified source.

Nordgauite, MnAl2(PO4)2(F,OH)2·5H2O, is a new secondary phosphate from the Hagendorf-Süd pegmatite, Bavaria, Germany. It occurs as white to off-white compact waxy nodules and soft fibrous aggregates a few millimetres across in altered zwieselite—triplite. Individual crystals are tabular prismatic, up to 200 μ long and 10 μ wide. Associated minerals include fluorapatite, sphalerite, uraninite, a columbite—tantalite phase, metastrengite, several unnamed members of the whiteite—jahnsite family, and a new analogue of kingsmountite. The fine-grained nature of nordgauite meant that only limited physical and optical properties could be obtained; streak is white; fracture, cleavage and twinning cannot be discerned. Dmeas. and Dcaic. are 2.35 and 2.46 g cm–3, respectively; the average RI is n = 1.57; the Gladstone-Dale compatibility is —0.050 (good). Electron microprobe analysis gives (wt.%): CaO 0.96. MgO 0.12, MnO 14.29, FeO 0.60, ZnO 0.24, A12O3 22.84, P2O5 31.62, F 5.13 and H2O 22.86 (by CHNX less F=O 2.16, total 96.50. The corresponding empirical formula is (Mn0.90Ca0.08Fe0.04Zn0.01Mg0.01)-Σi.04Ai2.0i(PO4)2[F1.21,(OH)0.90]Σ2.11·5.25H2O. Nordgauite is triclinic, space group P1̄, with the unit-cell parameters: a = 9.920(4), b = 9.933(3), c = 6.087(2) Å, α = 92.19(3), β = 100.04(3), γ = 97.61(3)°, V = 584.2(9) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest lines in the XRD powder pattern are [d in Å (I) (hkl)] 9.806 (100)(010), 7.432 (40)(l1̄0), 4.119 (20)(210), 2.951 (16)(031), 4.596 (12)(21̄O), 3.225 (12)(220) and 3.215 (12)(121). The structure of nordgauite was solved using synchrotron XRD data collected on a 60 μm × 3 μm × 4 μm needle and refined to R1 = 0.0427 for 2374 observed reflections with F > 4σ(F). Although nordgauite shows stoichiometric similarities to mangangordonite and kastningite, its structure is more closely related to those of vauxite and montgomeryite in containing zig-zag strings of corner-connected Al-centred octahedra along [011], where the shared corners are alternately in cis and trans configuration. These chains link through corner-sharing with PO4 tetrahedra along [001] to form (100) slabs that are interconnected via edge-shared dimers of MnO6 polyhedra and other PO4 tetrahedra.

Eleonorite, ideally Fe63+(PO4)4O(OH)4·6H2O, the analogue of beraunite Fe2+Fe53+(PO4)4O(OH)5·6H2O with Fe2+ completely substituted by Fe3+, has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification as a mineral species (IMA 2015-003). The mineral was first described on material from the Eleonore Iron mine, Dünsberg, near Giessen, Hesse, Germany, but during this study further samples were required and a neotype locality is the Rotläufchen mine, Waldgirmes, Wetzlar, Hesse, Germany, where eleonorite is associated with goethite, rockbridgeite, dufrénite, kidwellite, variscite, matulaite, planerite, cacoxenite, strengite and wavellite. Usually eleonorite occurs as red-brown prismatic crystals up to 0.2 mm × 0.5 mm × 3.5 mm in size and in random or radial aggregates up to 5 mm across encrusting cavities in massive 'limonite'. The mineral is brittle. Its Mohs hardness is 3. Dmeas = 2.92(1), Dcalc = 2.931 g cm–3. The IR spectrum is given. Eleonorite is optically biaxial (+), α = 1.765(4), β = 1.780(5), γ = 1.812(6), 2Vmeas = 75(10)°, 2Vcalc = 70°. The chemical composition (electron microprobe data, H2O analysed by chromatography of products of ignition at 1200°C, wt.%) is: Al2O3 1.03, Mn2O3 0.82, Fe2O3 51.34, P2O5 31.06, H2O 16.4, total 99.58. All iron was determined as being trivalent from a Mössbauer analysis. The empirical formula (based on 27 O apfu) is (Fe5.763+Al0.18Mn0.093+)∑6.03(PO4)3.92O(OH)4.34·5.98H2O. The crystal structure (R = 0.0633) is similar to that of beraunite and is based on a heteropolyhedral framework formed by M(1–4)Ø6-octahedra (where M = Fe3+; Ø = O2–, OH– or H2O) and isolated PO4 tetrahedra, with a wide channel occupied by H2O molecules. Eleonorite is monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 20.679(10), b = 5.148(2), c = 19.223(9) Å, β = 93.574(9)°, V = 2042.5(16) Å3 and Z = 4. The strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I,%) (Hkl)] are 10.41 (100) (200), 9.67 (38) (002), 7.30 (29) (202̄), 4.816 (31) (111, 004), 3.432 (18) (600, 114, 404, 313), 3.197 (18) (510, 511̄, 006, 314̄, 602), 3.071 (34) (314, 115̄).

Subsolidus diopside compositions and coexisting diopside and liquid compositions which are also in equilibrium with anorthite and forsterite in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 were determined by X-ray diffraction and by electron microprobe in samples equilibrated at 1 bar and at 7 kbar. Along with previous data from the literature and using a recently published grid relating diffraction peaks to composition, results from both techniques are satisfactorily reconciled. At 1 bar, diopside composition (moles, Di = CaMgSi2O6, En = Mg2Si2O6, CaTs = CaAl2Si2O6) in equilibrium with anorthite, forsterite, and spinel (analogous to alkali basalts) are close to Di79CaTs20En1 and those in equilibrium with anorthite, forsterite, and pigeonite (analogous to tholeiitic basalt) are close to Di75CaTs3En22. At 7 kbar the equivalent compositions are Di69CaTs28En3 and Di69CaTs26En5 respectively.

In the system CaO-Na2O-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2, electron microprobe analyses of augites and liquids at 1 bar confirm the changes expected in the loci of liquids and show that the low Na2O (< 0.50 wt.%) augites are similar to those in CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2. At 7 kbar the orthopyroxene field has expanded sufficiently and augite was not encountered in the limited range of samples studied.

In remelted rocks the augite compositions at 1 bar are similar to the compositions of augites in low pressure effusive rocks. At 2–15 kbar, the available data in the literature for dry basalts show that experimentally recrystallized augites are very sub-calcic and very aluminous, and no natural equivalents exist in plutonic gabbros or in ophiolitic rocks. This discrepancy is not resolved but either the experimental pyroxenes are metastable or the pyroxenes presently in the rocks are not the pristine compositions.

The new mineral, vanadoallanite-(La), found in the stratiform ferromanganese deposit from the Shobu area, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Japan, was studied using electron microprobe analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Vanadoallanite-(La) is a rare-earth element-rich monoclinic epidote-supergroup mineral with simplified formula CaLaV3+AlFe2+(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH) (Z = 2, space group P21/m) characterized by predominantly V3+ at one of three octahedral sites, M1. The crystal studied shows large V (∼8.4 V2O3 wt.%), Fe (∼13.8 Fe2O3 wt.%; Fe2+/total Fe = 0.58) and Mn (∼8.8 MnO wt.%) contents. A small amount of Ti is also present (∼1.3 TiO2 wt.%). Structural refinement converged to R1 = 2.96%. The unit-cell parameters are a = 8.8985(2), b = 5.7650(1), c = 10.1185(2) Å, β = 114.120(1)° and V = 473.76(2) Å3. The cation distributions determined at A1,A2 and M3 are Ca0.61Mn0.39, (La0.46Ce0.14Pr0.07Nd0.18)Σ0.85Ca0.15 and Fe2+0.56Mn2+0.30Mg0.06V3+0.05Fe3+0.03, respectively. On the other hand, depending on Ti assignment, two different schemes of the cation distribution at M1 and M2 can be considered: (1) M1(V3+0.58Fe3+0.34Ti4+0.08) M2(Al0.92Fe3+0.08), and (2) M1(V3+0.58Fe3+0.42)M2(Al0.92Ti4+0.08). In both cases, the dominant cations at A1, A2, M1, M2 and M3 are Ca, La, V3+, Al and Fe2+ , respectively. According to ionic radius, Ti4+ possibly prefers M2 rather than Fe3+. A large Mn2+ content at A1 also characterizes our vanadoallanite-(La). The structural change of Mn2+-rich allanite-group minerals is considered to be controlled by two main factors. One is the large Mn2+ content at A1 in vanadoallanite-(La), which modifies the topology of the A1O9 polyhedron. The other is the expansion of M3O6 and M1O6 octahedra caused by large octahedral cations, such as Fe2+ and Mn2+, at M3 and the trivalent transition elements, V3+ and Fe3+, at M1.

A flinty, spherulitic dyke of peralkaiine trachyte in a Precambrian dyke-swarm consists mainly of albite and aegirine. Within this, euhedral crystals of narsarsukite, Na2(Ti,Fe)Si4O10(F), occur as short prisms elongate parallel to c. This distinguishes them from all previously described narsarsukites, which have tabular habits. Minor phases present include micas, apatite, quartz, pectolite, nordite, and a thorium silicate. Probe analyses are presented for narsarsukite, aegirine, aibite, biotite, apatite, pectolite, nordite, and the thorium silicate.

On mineralogical and geochemical grounds it is unlikely that the narsarsukite-bearing dyke is a differentiate of supposedly mantle-derived basalt-trachyte-comendite magmas in the region. The dyke is colinear with a comendite dyke exposed at lower altitude and it is suggested that the narsarsukite- bearing dyke developed as a rhcomorphic fenite generated by reaction between quartz diorite basement and fugitive alkaline solutions from the subjacent comendite.

Zircon from 14 representative granite samples of the late-Variscan Cornubian Batholith in SW England was analysed for W, P, As, Nb, Ta, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, U, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er, Yb, Al, Sc, Bi, Mn, Fe, Ca, Pb, Cu, S and F using electron probe microanalyses. Zircons from the biotite and tourmaline granites are poor in minor and trace elements, usually containing 1.0–1.5 wt.% HfO2, <0.5 wt.% UO2 and P2O5, <0.25 wt.% Y2O3, <0.2 wt.% Sc2O3 and Bi2O3 and <0.1 wt.% ThO2. Zircon from topaz granites from the St. Austell Pluton, Meldon Aplite and Megiliggar Rocks are slightly enriched in Hf (up to 4 wt.% HfO2), U (1– 3.5 wt.% UO2) and Sc (0.5–1 wt.% Sc2O3). Scarce metamictized zircon grains are somewhat enriched in Al, Ca, Fe and Mn. The decrease of the zircon Zr/Hf ratio, a reliable magma fractionation index, from 110–60 in the biotite granites to 30–10 in the most evolved topaz granites (Meldon Aplite and Megiliggar Rocks), supports a comagmatic origin of the biotite and topaz granites via long-lasting fractionation of common peraluminous crustal magma. In comparison with other European rare-metal provinces, the overall contents of trace elements in Cornubian zircons are low and the Zr/Hf and U/Th ratios show lower degrees of fractionation of the parental melt.

Results of an electron microprobe study of the metal phase and perryite inclusions in the metal of Horse Creek, Mount Egerton, and Norton County enstatitic meteorites are given. The origin of the ‘pseudo-octahedral’ structures observed in the metal phase of the Horse Creek and Mount Egerton ‘anomalous enstatitic meteorites’ is discussed.
