Almeidaite (IMA 2013-020), ideally Pb(Mn, Y)Zn2(Ti,Fe3+)18O36(O, OH)2, from Novo Horizonte, Bahia, Brazil, occurs in association with quartz, rutile, anatase, hematite, kaolinite, muscovite, xenotime-(Y) and bastnaesite-(La). Almeidaite forms isolated, black, opaque, sub-metallic, platy crystals flattened on [0001], measuring up to 30 mm 6 30 mm 6 6 mm in size, dominated by the basal pinacoid {0001}, which is bounded by various, mostly steep, rhombohedra and the hexagonal prism {1120}. Most of the crystals are multiply twinned, with non-planar contact surfaces that are approximately parallel to the c axis. The streak is brown. Reflectance values are [(Ro, Re) λ (nm)]: (12.78, 15.39) 470; (12.86, 15.43) 546; (12.91, 15.55) 589; (13.04, 15.75) 650. The empirical formula is (Pb0.59Sr0.12Ca0.04La0.03)Σ0.78(Mn0.54Y0.46)Σ1.00Zn1.43(Ti13.02Fe4.983+)Σ18.00(Fe0.323+Mn0.15)Σ0.47[O37.18(OH)0.82]Σ38.00. It is trigonal, space group R3, with the unit-cell parameters a = 10.4359(2), c = 21.0471(4) Å, V = 1985.10(7) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was solved (R1 = 0.039) using 2110 unique reflections with I > 3σ(I). Almeidaite is a member of the crichtonite group with Pb dominant in the A site (with 12-fold coordination) and Zn dominant in the T site (with 4-fold coordination). It is a Zn analogue of senaite and a Pb analogue of landauite. The mineral is named after Professor Fernando Flávio Marques de Almeida (1916–2013).

“Envelope crystals” collected during The Great Barrier Reef Expedition in May 1929 have been studied using low-temperature synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are shown to be weddellite, with the largest content of zeolitic water reported to date. A new H2O site has been located within the crystal structure. Study of the crystals show that the end-member formula for weddellite should be reported as CaC2O4·(2.5 – x)H2O, where 0≤x≤ 0.25, instead of CaC2O4·(2H2O or CaC2O4·(2 + x )H2O. This is also the first report of weddellite occurring in a coral reef.

The transformation of manganite during heating has been studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. It is observed that manganite transforms into pyrolusite keeping its original axial directions parallel to those of the transformed phase. Pyrolusite then transforms into Mn2O3 with its [001] ‖ [110] or [100] of Mn2O3; of Mn2O3 and [010] ‖ [001] of Mn2O3. Evidence of an intermediate product in the pyrolusite → Mn2O3 reaction has been found.

The Upper Triassic sediments are assumed to have contained concentrated solutions, which caused, or contributed to, their dehydration and contraction. The contraction of a colloidal mass results in the production of tension planes, and unless compensated by settlement, rupture finally ensues. Relief of pressure by rupture may bring the sohtions into the labile state, when innumerable closely-spaced centres of crystallization will be set up. The crystals, fed by vertically diffusing solutions, grow vertically, so long as contraction and feeding continue. When, at length, contraction attains its limit, further growth is resisted, and the stresses set up, transmitted to the central parting, produce bending and other pressure effects in the veins.

Fassinaite, ideally Pb22+(S2O3)(CO3), is a new mineral from the Trentini mine, Mount Naro, Vicenza Province, Veneto, Italy (holotype locality). It is also reported from the Erasmus adit, Schwarzleo District, Leogang, Salzburg, Austria and the Friedrich-Christian mine, Schapbach, Black Forest, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany (cotype localities). At the Italian type locality it occurs as acicular [010]. colourless crystals up to 200 μn long, closely associated with galena, quartz and anglesite. At the Austrian cotype locality it is associated with cerussite, rare sulphur and very rare phosgenite. At the German cotype locality anglesite is the only associated phase. Fassinaite crystals commonly have flat chisel-shaped terminations. They are transparent with vitreous to adamantine lustre and a white streak. Fassinaite is brittle with an irregular fracture and no discernible cleavage; the estimated Mohs hardness is 11/2—2. The calculated density for the type material is 6.084 g cm–3 (on the basis of the empirical formula), whereas the X-ray density is 5.947 g cm–3. In common with other natural lead thiosulphates (i.e. sidpietersite and steverustite) fassinaite has intense internal reflections, which do not allow satisfactory optical data to be collected; the crystals are length-slow and have very high birefringence. The mineral is not fluorescent.

Fassinaite is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with unit-cell parameters (for the holotype material) a = 16.320(2), b = 8.7616(6), c = 4.5809(7) Å, V = 655.0(1) Å3, a:b:c = 1.863:1:0.523, Z = 4. Single-crystal structural studies were carried out on crystals from all three localities: R1(F) values range between 0.0353 and 0.0596. The structure consists of rod-like arrangements of Pb-centred polyhedra that extend along the [010] direction. These ‘rods’ are linked, alternately, by (CO3)2– and (S2O3)2– groups. The (S2O3)2– groups point alternately left and right (in a projection on [001] with [010] set vertical) if the apex occupied by the S2– in the thiosulphate group is defined to be the atom giving the direction. The lead atoms are nine-coordinated by seven oxygen atoms and two sulphur (S2–) atoms. The eight strongest X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 4.410 (39) (101), 4.381 (59) (020), 4.080 (62) (400), 3.504 (75) (301), 3.108 (100) (121), 2.986 (82) (420), 2.952 (49) (221) and 2.736 (60) (321). Electron-microprobe analyses produce an empirical formula Pb2.01(1)(S1.82(2)O3)CO3 (on the basis of six oxygen atoms). The presence of both carbonate and thiosulphate groups was corroborated by Raman spectra, which are discussed in detail. Fassinaite is named after Bruno Fassina (b. 1943), an Italian mineral collector who discovered the mineral in 2009.

The following notes were prepared at the request of Dr. J. E. Stead, F.R.S., the well-known metallographer. Several years ago he had obtained in a tin-antimony-arsenic alloy some remarkable crystals having the form of seganents of spherical shells (fig. 3, p. 9.72 below), and he naturally wished to learn if anything of the same kind was known amongst minerals. The notes contain no new data, but merely collect together facts already known to mineralogists. They may perhaps be of some use to metallographers in calling attention to the various habits of growth met with amongst minerals, since distortions and irregularities of crystalline growth are so frequent amongst metals.

Uraninite from Geevor Mine, Cornwall, has been analysed by the complete lead method and an age of 290±7 million years has been accepted. Similar studies of uranium from Tyndrum Mine, Perthshire, give an age of 230±8 million years. The significance of the results is briefly considered.

In view of recently reported microtektites in deep-sea sediments north-west, south-west, and south of Australia, attention is drawn to the occurrence of minute forms of hay-silica glass among the products of incineration of opal-bearing vegetation in haystacks, and to the minute forms of volcanic glass ejected in lava fountains. These terrestrial micro-forms of glass have properties within the range of those for the fossil glassy bodies named ‘microtektites’. It is possible that the fusion of opal contained in silica-accumulator plants during fierce, prehistoric forest, bush, and grass fires in Australia generated micro-forms of glass that became readily airborne and drifted away in up-currents. Carried by the south-east Trades, they would ultimately descend over the Wharton Basin in the Indian Ocean. Strong to violent northerlies and north-easterlies (Brickfielder Winds) would carry them over the ocean south and south-west of Australia. Thus they could contribute to the deposits of bodies of glass regarded as microtektites in deep-sea sediments. Many microbodies of glass in the Wharton Basin could have had their origin in the Javanese volcanic eruptions.

The following notes on the petrology of British East Africa are the result of an examination of rock-specimens collected by Professor J. W. Gregory on his well-known expedition from Mombasa to Mt. Kenya and Lake Baringo in 1892-3, and of rock-collections from the Uganda Protectorate which have been recently presented to the British Museum by Sir Harry Johnston.

The collections include examples of the Archaean gneisses, schists, and granites which constitute the prevailing basement rocks of Central Africa; of ferruginotls schists, coarse sandstones, and quartzites belonging to the Palaeozoic Karagwe series ; and of an interesting series of Tertiary volcanic rocks comprising phonolites, phonolltic traehytes, riebeckite-rhyolites, kenytes, and basalts from the volcanoes of the Great Rift Valley, as well as of nephelinites and basaltic rocks containing melilite and perofskite from Mr. Elgon.

The clinopyroxenes kanoite and spodumene were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) at room temperature. At the displacive phase transitions between the C2/c and P21/c polymorphs both phases coexist within the same crystal. In this two-phase region the pressure in the DAC remains constant. The experimental results demonstrate that pressure buffering at first-order phase transitions can occur in the DAC.

Wang et al. (2000) presented interesting new data on the occurrence of Hf-rich zircon in peralkaline granitic rocks. It is shown that the knowledge of the Hf distribution in zircon is important for the understanding of Zr/Hf ratios defined by whole-rock analysis. However, the processes leading to the unusual Zr/Hf fractionation are still poorly constrained. Some aspects are discussed further here. Analysis of available data demonstrates that extremely low Zr/Hf ratios found in topaz- and rare-metal bearing granites may be either a primary signature of some evolved granitic melts or, alternatively, they are produced during albitization of the rocks. Topaz- and rare-metal bearing granites may be P-rich and contain zircon moderately enriched in Hf (2—9 wt.% HfO2). Another group is P-poor and the Hf content in accessory zircon is high (up to 35 wt.% HfO2). Both types of intrusions may occur within a single orogen as demonstrated by the example of the Hercynian magmatism in the Erzgebirge/Krušné hory region (Germany/Czech Republic).

The original structure determination of asisite, nominally Pb7SiO8Cl2, has been re-evaluated in the light of electron-diffraction data (TEM) on the original sample material. Electron diffraction patterns indicate a super-structure based upon a metrically tetragonal 26-cation-site super-sheet motif (14x14x23 Å). Given the strong ordering of elements substituting for Pb in closely-related litharge-based oxychlorides (parkinsonite, symesite, kombatite, schwartzembergite), the asisite superstructure is inferred to be due to strong ordering of Si within the PbO sheet. The original chemical analyses of asisite given by Rouse et al. (1988) are shown to be consistent with such a super-structure, which has a 12Pb:1Si cation ratio. A new formula for asisite is proposed that is based upon this superstructure: Pb12(SiO4)O8Cl4 (Z = 8). The structure of asisite determined by Rouse et al. (1988) is that of the average Pb/Si-disordered tetragonal sub-cell (I4/mmm: 4x4x23 Å) and belies the highly ordered real state. The structure of the tetragonal sub-cell has been re-determined here: R = 5.6% for 178 unique Fo > 4σFo and an anisotropic model. A significantly reduced 72% occupancy of the Pb(2) site was found that implies the nominal formula Pb7SiO8Cl2, thus confirming the findings of Rouse et al. (1988). Comparisons with kombatite and symesite support the assignment of Si to Pb(2) and imply that Si in asisite is also likely to be in tetrahedral coordination, with the apical oxygen cross-linking PbO sheets. However, because most of the key information relating to the location of Si is provided by the super-lattice reflections, the inability of X-ray diffraction to register these reflections introduces a significant ambiguity into the interpretation of Pb/Si ordering behaviour in this mineral.

We describe an ilmenite-bearing aplitic syenite dyke in the roof zone of the Tibchi granite, exposed at Kalato, in the Tibchi ring-complex, northern Nigeria. Inclusions of ferrocolumbite, rutile and ixiolite in the ilmenite are inferred to have been trapped at the magmatic stage. The main mafic mineral is annite. Compositionally, the ilmenite, rutile and ferrocolumbite have near-end-member compositions. A positive correlation between Sc and Ta/(Ta+Nb) indicates that Sc behaved incompatibly as ferrocolumbite grew. Such entrapped accessory minerals may well have formed by local saturation at the ilmenite-melt and annite-melt interface. During and after their crystallization, the melt reached saturation in H2O and degassed. A second generation of ilmenite enriched in Mn and Zn replaced the primary ilmenite along fractures and grain margins. As fO2 began to increase, composite blebs and rinds of ‘ferropseudobrookite’, rutile and hematite began to develop by oxidation-induced exsolution in the primary ilmenite. Incorporation of Nb, Ta, Sc and Si in the ‘ferropseudobrookite’ may well have stabilized it at Kalato. Ultimately, it is transformed to hematite + rutile. The IMA-sanctioned view that the solid solution between pseudobrookite and Ti3O5 is complete, and thus that ‘ferropseudobrookite’, as an intermediate member of the series, does not merit species status, needs to be re-evaluated.

Ikaite (CaCO3.6H2O), which forms in cold carbonate-rich marine environments, also crystallizes from calcite under aqueous conditions above ∼0.5 GPa at room temperature. Using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, measurements have been made of pressure-induced changes in unit-cell dimensions of ikaite contained in a diamond anvil cell. Ikaite shows anisotropic compressibility along the crystallographic axes in the order a > c > b up to 4 GPa. Comparison with other phases shows the relative volume compressibility of ikaite to be greater than that of gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O), calcite and aragonite. The volume of ikaite is less than that occupied by equivalent volumes of CaCO3 (calcite/aragonite) + 6H2O at all pressures below the freezing point (H2O(l) to ice VI). The bulk modulus of ikaite has been obtained from a fit to the Vinet equation of state, giving V0 = 760.3±0.1 Å3, K0 = 21.3±1.4 GPa, and K0' = 11.7±1.7. Dissolution of CaCO3 in H2O (l) at high pressure resulting in crystallization of CaCO3.6H2O suggests equilibrium behaviour between a carbonate-rich fluid species and the condensed hydrated calcium carbonate. The potential for ikaite as a candidate phase for water transport in cold subduction zones is considered.

The mineral chernovite, described as a new mineral from the Urals by Russian mineralogists in 1967 (Goldin et al, 1967), has been found at three different localities in mineral fissures in the Binnatal, Switzerland, and a little to the south, in Italy. The mineral occurs in greenish-yellow bipyramidal crystals up to about I mm. A detailed single-crystal study of several specimens showed that the lattice constants vary considerably on either side of those published for the original chernovite. The refractive indices, too, display some variation. Microprobe analyses of this material, and of xenotime specimens from the same region, revealed that there exists at least partial solution between chernovite and xenotime. The three chernovite samples have molar percentages of 63·2, 73·2, and 82·0 % YtAsO4 (the Urals chernovite has about 95·2 %). These studies prove the existence of an isomorphous series between xenotime and chernovite, at least in the As-rich portion.

Rajite was found at Lone Pine, New Mexico, by R. A. Jenkins. It occurs as small (1.5 mm) crystals in rhyolite with mackayite, and may be a pseudomorph after teineite. Analysis gave CuO 18.4, 15.3, 18.0; TeO2 73.7, 79.8, 79.1; rem. (respectively) 7.9, 2.4, 2.3. Some CaO in samples 2 and 3: 2.5, 0.6%. This gives CuTe2O5, identical to the artificial compound prepared by Moret et al. (1969). Easily soluble in dilute acids; readily fusible.

Monoclinic P21/c with a = 6.866 Å, b = 9.314, c = 7.598, β = 109.1°. Strongest lines 3.064(10), 4.654(8), 3.348(8), 3.111(7), 2.744(7), 3.793(6B), 2.844(5), 2.796(5). With Z = 4, ρcalc = 5.77 g/cm3.

Crystals Duesbury green (RHS-131D), H = 4, ρmeas = 5.75 g/cm3. Pleochroic in greens γ > β > α; α = 2.115, β = 2.135, ‖ [010], γ = 2.26, α:[001] 22° in obtuse β, 2Vγ = 40°.

Decrespignyite-(Y) is a new copper yttrium rare earth carbonate chloride hydrate from the Paratoo copper mine, near Yunta, Olary district, South Australia. Decrespignyite-(Y) occurs as blue crusts, coatings and fillings in thin fissures on the slatey country rock. Individual pseudohexagonal platelets are typically 10–50 µm in maximum dimension and are often curved. Associated minerals include caysichite-(Y), donnayite-(Y), malachite and kamphaugite-(Y). Electron microprobe and CHN analyses gave: Y2O3 42.2; La2O3 0.1; Pr2O3 0.1; Nd2O3 1.3; Sm2O3 1.0; Gd2O3 4; Tb2O3 0.4; Dy2O3 3.7; Ho2O3 2.6; Er2O3 2.5; CaO 0.5; CuO 10.9; Cl 3.0; CO2 19.8; H2O 10.8, yielding an empirical formula of (Y3.08Gd0.22Dy0.16Ho0.11Er0.10Nd0.06Sm0.05Tb0.02La0.02Pr0.01Ca0.08)∑3.91Cu1.12(CO3)3.70-Cl0.7(OH)5.79·2.4H2O. The simplified formula is (Y,REE)4Cu(CO3)4Cl(OH)5·2H2O. The mineral is royal blue to turquoise-blue in colour, transparent, with a pearly to vitreous lustre and a pale blue streak. No cleavage was observed but the morphology suggests that cleavage would be on [010]. The Mohs' hardness is estimated to be 4. The strongest lines in the X-ray powder pattern are {dobs (Iobs) (hkl)} 22.79 (30) (010); 7.463 (30) (001); 7.086 (50) (011); 6.241 (100) (021); 4.216 (30) (12); 3.530 (40) (022); 3.336 (30) (032); 2.143 (30) (222, 01). The powder diffraction pattern was indexed on a monoclinic cell with a = 8.899(6), b = 22.77(2), c = 8.589(6)Å, β = 120.06(5)°, V = 1506.3(7) Å3 and Z = 4. The structure of the new mineral could not be determined but powder diffraction data indicate the space group is P2, Pm or P2/m. The measured density is 3.64(2) g/cm3 and the calculated density is 3.645 g/cm3. Decrespignyite-(Y) is biaxial negative with α = 1.604(4) and γ = 1.638(3) with β very close to γ pleochroism is medium strong; X very pale bluish, Y and Z bluish (with greenish tint). Decrespignyite-(Y) is a supergene mineral which precipitated from mildly basic carbonated ground waters. The mineral is named after Robert Champion de Crespigny, a prominent figure in the Australian mining industry and chancellor of the University of Adelaide.

In Haüy's original definition of eclogite, the presence of kyanite as an accessory constituent was recognized, and it is apparent that he was familiar with examples from the Sau Alps and Styria. The best known of eclogites—those of the Bavarian Fichtelgebirge (e.g. Silberbach, Weissenstein, and Eppenreuth)—contain significant kyanite interspersed among the omphacite grains or associated with accessory quartz and muscovite in the rocks. Of these rocks rather extended descriptions have been published. Analyses of the minerals and the rocks themselves belong to an early date and do not reach the standard of modern analyses. Later, Drill (1902) published a systematic account of these Bavarian eclogites and has added an analysis of an eelogite with kyanite from Unterpferdt near Silberbach and an analysis of a garnet from a Silberbach eclogite.

A laboratory investigation in connexion with some blast-furnace slags, led to the preparation of the five synthetic melilites for which X-ray data are provided. The five compounds represent gehlenite, åkermanite and three members of the intermediate series of solid solutions, corresponding to 25, 50, and 75 % of åkermanite.

The binary system gehlenite–åkermanite was studied by Ferguson and Buddington, who established relationships between refractive indices, density, and composition and determined solidus and liquidus curves. The crystal structure of the melilite group of compounds was investigated by Warren, who showed that the structure was based on a tetragonal lattice.
