Tennantite-(Cu), Cu12As4S13, was approved as a new mineral species from the Layo epithermal deposit, Castilla Province, Arequipa Department, Peru, where it occurs as black metallic anhedral grains, up to 0.1 mm across, replacing enargite and associated with chalcopyrite and vinciennite. In reflected light, tennantite-(Cu) is isotropic, grey with a bluish shade. Reflectance data for the four COM wavelengths in air are [λ (nm): R (%)]: 470: 29.1; 546: 28.4; 589: 27.4; and 650: 25.0. Electron microprobe analysis for holotype material gave (in wt.% – average of 10 spot analyses): Cu 49.32(27), Fe 2.20(12), Zn 0.09(2), Sn 0.03(5), As 19.45(43), Sb 1.94(10), Te 0.02(5), S 27.75(43), total 100.80(20). On the basis of (As + Sb + Te) = 4 atoms per formula unit (apfu), the empirical formula of tennantite-(Cu) is (Cu11.27Fe0.57Zn0.02)Σ11.86(As3.77Sb0.23)Σ4.00S12.57. Tennantite-(Cu) is cubic, I$\overline 4$3m, with unit-cell parameters a = 10.1710(10) Å, V = 1052.2(2) Å3 and Z = 2. Its crystal structure was refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to a final R1 = 0.0178 on the basis of 263 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) and 24 refined parameters. Tennantite-(Cu) is isotypic with other tetrahedrite-group minerals. Previous findings of tennantite-(Cu) are reported and some nomenclature issues, related to the Fe and Cu oxidation states, are discussed. At the Layo epithermal deposit, tennantite-(Cu) is the result of the replacement of enargite under decreasing $f_{{\rm S}_ 2}$ conditions.

Lithium oxide contents of biotites in some Cornubian granites which have been studied by electron microprobe are estimated from their SiO2 and F contents using samples formerly analysed by XRF and wet chemistry. Better formulae which include Li show that most of these biotites are lithian siderophyllites/ lithian Al-annites although some Dartmoor samples, especially those in the basic microgranite (ME) enclaves, are closer to Al-annites. Dartmoor samples are slightly more basic and poorer in Alvi than those from the Isles of Scilly and Carnmenellis granites agreeing with the broad differences in the host rocks. Biotites in volcanic clasts from the New Red Sandstone are significantly different in having much higher Si, Ti, Mg, F and ΣY and lower Alvi contents than those of the granite biotites: these are lithian Fe-Mg biotites. These clasts are believed to be the volcanic equivalents of an evolving Dartmoor magma (Awad et al., 1996). If so, their biotites reflect the composition of the granite biotites at the time of magma emplacement. They subsequently evolved as they equilibrated with the cooling granite to give the present biotite compositions of the Dartmoor granites.

In the first part of this paper (33) the effects of heat on the potash-soda-felspars were considered, and a possible explanation in terms of atomic rearrangement was proposed. In this part the experiments, and deductions from them, will be applied to some questions of petrogenesis and differentiation, particularly in connexion with the granites and granite-pegmatites.

The upper Proterozoic Cuiabá group of Mato Grosso, Brazil, is composed of low-grade clastic meta-sediments which have been folded by several successive tectonic events. Three generations of quartz veins are associated with the structural evolution of this area. The first veins are deformed by the main tectonic phases and show a complex deformational patterns. The second set is parallel to the cleavage and was formed syntectonically during the main folding phase, whilst the last quartz veins are related to a later stage of deformation. A systematic study of fluid inclusions in relation with a statistical study of microstructural markers (fluid inclusion trails, opened microcracks) was carried out on quartz veins from three localities. On the basis of microthermometric studies and Raman spectrometry analysis, four differents types of fluids have been distinguished, each trapped in specific fluid inclusion trails: (i) CO2-rich liquids and vapours (Lc, Vc) at Casa de Pedra, (ii) Lc and Vc inclusions with variable amounts of CO2, CH4, N2 in the vapour phase at BR-70, (iii) CH2-N2-rich vapours (Vn-m), and (iv) aqueous inclusions (L) with variable salinities representing the last fluid generations at all localities.

At Casa de Pedra and BR-70, most fluids are observed within the three generations of quartz veins, indicating an important fluid circulation associated with the last phase of brittle deformation. Fluid inclusions of type (iii) and (iv) are oriented along several well defined directions. The study shows the importance of integrated microstructural and fluid-inclusion studies for understanding the geometry and chronology of fluid circulation.

Multi-packer hydraulic tests and radioactive tracer experiments carried out in boreholes in the Carnmenellis granite have shown that the flow of water through the rock is largely confined to narrow zones separated by zones of very low permeability. Correlation of the hydraulic data with geological data from oriented cores has shown that most of the flow is associated with discrete geological features, including pegmatitic and other veins, and elvan (quartz-feldspar porphyry) dykes, characteristic features of the granite of the area. Joints have also been found to conduct water, particularly in the upper 250 m of the granite. The permeability of the granite has been found not to be simply a function of fracture frequency, long sections of highly fractured rock having no associated flow under test conditions. While flow paths have been found to become less frequent with depth, flow rates do not vary over the depths studied, the highest flow rate recorded at the site being associated with a vein at 637 m. Water-conducting fractures have been found to have certain preferred orientations which vary with depth. A set striking 155°C is particularly well developed in the upper 250 m of the granite. This orientation is significant in that it is parallel to the cross-courses in the nearby mineralized belt with which the younger (Tertiary) mineralization tends to be associated and from which thermal brines issue into several local mines. These fractures are also approximately parallel to the maximum horizontal stress which affects the granite and which appears to be responsible for the selective opening of joints of certain orientations.

The paper discusses the mineralogy of eruptives from the Nandewar Volcano, which range in composition from hawaiite and trachyandesite to comendite via tristanite and mafic and peralkaline trachyte. Olivine, Ca-rich pyroxene, and amphibole display marked decreases in 100 Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios in the sequence trachyandesite to comendite, reflecting variation in host rock compositions. The presence of tscher-makitic subcalcic pyroxene and aluminous bronzite megacrysts in several trachyandesites indicates that these experienced intratelluric crystallization at elevated pressures (6–8 kbar). Some titanomagnetite and plagioclase phenocrysts in trachyandesites may also be moderate pressure cognate precipitates. Groundmass pyroxenes of some trachytes and comendites are strongly acmitic. The presence or absence of coexisting alkali amphiboles and aenigmatite appears to reflect stability over a relatively broad range of fO2 conditions. Aenigmatite rims on titanomagnetite and ilmenite microphenocrysts in several peralkaline eruptives provides support for a ‘no-oxide’ field in T-fO2 space. The Fe-Ti oxide compositional data indicate that magmas spanning the spectrum trachy-andesite-comendite crystallized under conditions of decreasing T and fO2 which broadly coincided with the FMQ synthetic buffer curve. However, a voluminous group of slightly older associated rhyolites appear to have crystallized under significantly more oxidizing conditions.

Fluorcalcioroméite, (Ca,Na)2Sb25+(O,OH)6F, is a new roméite-group, pyrochlore-supergroup mineral (IMA 2012-093), from Starlera mine, Ferrera, Hinterrhein district, Grischun, Switzerland. The intimately associated minerals are: braunite, hematite, calcite, quartz and, rarely, wallkilldellite-(Mn). It occurs as euhedral octahedra, untwinned, from 0.1 to 1 mm in size. The crystals are yellow to orange and translucent; the streak is white, and the lustre is vitreous to resinous. It is non-fluorescent under ultraviolet light. Mohs' hardness is ∼5½, tenacity is brittle. Cleavage is not observed; fracture is conchoidal. The calculated density is 5.113 g/cm3. The mineral is isotropic, ncalc. = 1.826. The Raman spectrum is dominated by bands of Sb–O octahedral bond stretching and O–Sb–O bending modes. The chemical composition (n = 13) is (by wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy (WDS), H2O calculated by difference, wt.%): Na2O 4.11, CaO 15.41, MnO 0.54, CuO 0.01, ZnO 0.01, PbO 0.02, Al2O3 0.10, FeO 0.50, Y2O3 0.07, SiO2 0.04, TiO2 0.01, UO2 0.01, Sb2O5 76.18, WO3 0.78, F 2.79, H2O 0.59, O = F–1.17, total 100.00. The empirical formula, based on 2 cations at the B site, is (Ca1.16Na0.56☐0.22Fe0.032+ Mn0.032+)Σ2.00(Sb5+1.98Al0.01W0.01)Σ2.00O6[F0.62(OH)0.28O0.06☐0.04]Σ1.00. The strongest eight X-ray powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 5.934(81)(111), 3.102(20)(311), 2.969(100)(222), 2.572(6)(400), 1.979(7)(333), 1.818(8)(440), 1.551(15)(622), and 1.484(5)(444). The crystal structure refinement (R1 = 0.0106) gave the following data: cubic, Fdm, a = 10.2987(8) Å, V = 1092.31(15) Å3, Z = 8. Unit-cell parameters refined from the powder data are: a = 10.284(2), V = 1087.7(7) Å3, Z = 8.

Gypsum crystals were grown at 25, 35, and 45 °C from solutions containing different ionic impurities (Mg2+, Na+, Cd2+). Curved gypsum crystals formed from the solutions enriched in magnesium or cadmium, whereas, in the presence of sodium, gypsum always grew undeformed. The mechanism of the curvature is described and an interpretation based on crystallographic considerations is given. Curvature is the result of impurity incorporation followed by crack formation and mechanical twinning which releases the internal stresses.

Conventional experiments designed to investigate the mechanical properties of polycrystalline geological materials are generally restricted to measurements of whole-rock properties. However, when comparing the measurements with theoretical models, it is frequently essential to understand how the deformation is accommodated at the grain-scale. This is particularly true for polymineralic rocks because in this case most theories express the whole-rock properties as some function of the properties of their constituent minerals, and hence the contribution which each phase makes to those properties must be measured if the theories are to be fully assessed. The penetrating nature of neutrons offers a method of addressing this problem. By performing deformation experiments in the neutron beam-line and collecting neutron diffraction patterns at different applied loads, the lattice parameters of all the mineral phases present may be determined as a function of load. The elastic strain experienced by each phase is then easily determined. Moreover, the strain in different lattice directions is also obtained. From this information a wide range of problems relevant for the characterization of the elastic and plastic deformation behaviour of polymineralic geological materials can be explored. An experimental technique for carrying out such experiments is described, and its validity is demonstrated by showing that the results obtained from deforming an elastically isotropic olivine + magnesiowüstite sample agree, to within very tight bounds, with the behaviour predicted by theory for elastically isotropic composites.

This work has been primarily concerned with plagioclase felspars within the composition range Ab30An70 to Ab0An100, i.e. felspars with the anorthite-type structure. Some results for less basic specimens will be quoted where appropriate ; a fuller description of the effects of heat-treatments on intermediate plagioclase felspars will be published later.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the granite composing the eastern part of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, as mapped on Sheet no. 337 of the Geological Survey. The work was undertaken on the suggestion of Dr. J.W. Evans, and comprised the field- and laboratory-work necessary for a detailed study of the petrology and tectonics of the area.

The boundary of the granite, as mapped by the Geological Survey, has been retained, and also the distribution of the two main granite types ('coarse' and 'fine') shown on the Survey map. The coarse granite, however, has been sub-divided into two varieties, and it has been found practicable to map the distribution of each (fig. 1).

The killas inclusions in this granite have not hitherto been studied, and these have received due attention. Similarly, the minor intrusions described include some that have not been previously recorded.

The Maimecha-Kotui province in the North of Siberian platform is the largest province of ultramafic alkaline rocks in the world. The province comprises thirty-seven central-type complexes together with numerous dykes. The majority of dykes are radially disposed around the ultramafic alkaline massifs. Data are presented for dykes of the Dolbykha carbonatite complex, which comprises olivine and melilite nephelinites; nosean, calcite and cancrinite phonolites; calcite trachytes and calcite carbonatites.

Some peralkaline phonolitic dykes contain carbonate-bearing globules with sizes of 1−2 mm to 17−20 mm. Globules consist of polycrystalline calcitic aggregates together with albite, phlogopite, apatite, Sr-lueshite, zircon, ancylite, ilmenite and strontianite. The phonolites have phenocrysts of albite, phlogopite and ilmenite. Albite, phlogopite, calcite and nepheline are also present in the groundmass. Analysis of these materials in the light of experimental data on the liquid immiscibility in carbonate-silicate systems suggests that separation of carbonatite from phonolitic melts took place due to immiscibility in the liquid state. I propose that carbonate melts contained originally significantly higher alkali contents which were subsequently lost into the fluid phase due to the incongruent dissolution of calcium-sodium carbonates in aqueous fluid at low temperatures. The discovery of nyerereite in the carbonatite of Polar Siberia confirms this conclusion. I infer that one of the mechanisms for the genesis of carbonatite melt in Polar Siberia was liquid immiscibility in strongly differentiated phonolitic magmas.

The generation of the carbonatites was probably controlled by the depth (and PCO2) of the crustal magma chamber where differentiation took place and probably also by the alkalinity of melts, and the rapidity of magma ascent to the surface.

Imayoshiite, Ca3Al(CO3)[B(OH)4](OH)6·12H2O, occurs in cavities in the altered gabbro xenolith in the sepentinized dunite exposed at Suisho-dani, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. Imayoshiite is colourless and transparent with a vitreous lustre and its aggregates are white with a silky lustre. Imayoshiite has a white streak. Its Mohs hardness is 2–3. It is brittle, the cleavage is distinct on {100} and the fracture is uneven. The mineral is uniaxial (–) with the indices of refraction ω = 1.497(2) and ε = 1.470(2) in white light. Imayoshiite is hexagonal, P63, a = 11.0264(11), c = 10.6052(16) Å by powder diffraction and a = 11.04592(2), c = 10.61502(19) Å by single-crystal diffraction. The structural refinement converged to R1 = 2.35%. Imayoshiite is the first member of the ettringite group with both CO3 and B(OH)4 anions.

Seven chemical analyses of pink or green tourmalines belonging to the elbalte-schorl series, along with their physical, optical, and X-ray data are presented. Linear variation diagrams showing the relationship between composition and refractive indices, specific gravities, and cell parameters are constructed. Relationship between colour and chemical composition is also discussed.

Pauladamsite (IMA2015-005), Cu4(SeO3)(SO4)(OH)4·2H2O, is a new mineral from the Santa Rosa mine, Darwin district, Inyo County, California, USA, where it occurs as a secondary oxidation-zone mineral in association with brochantite, chalcanthite, gypsum, ktenasite, mimetite, schulenbergite and smithsonite on limonitic gossan. Pauladamsite forms green, multiply twinned blades up to 0.5 mm long grouped in radial sprays. The streak is pale green. Crystals are transparent and have vitreous to silky lustre. The Mohs hardness is ∼2, the tenacity is brittle, the fracture is irregular and crystals exhibit one perfect cleavage on [001]. The calculated density is 3.535 g/cm3. Electron microprobe analyses provided: CuO 48.96, ZnO 3.56, SeO2 18.82, SO3 13.90, H2O 13.29 (calc.), total 98.53 wt.%. The empirical formula (based on 13 O apfu) is: (Cu3.55Zn0.25)∑3.80Se0.98SO13H8.50. Pauladamsite is triclinic, P1, a = 6.0742(7), b = 8.4147(11), c = 10.7798 (15) Å, α = 103.665(7), β = 95.224(7), γ = 90.004(6)°, V = 533.03(12) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs in Å(I)(hkl)]: 10.5(46)(011); 3.245(100)(001); 5.81(50)(011); 2.743(49)(112); 3.994(67)(012); 3.431(23)(1̄12,1̄2̄1,1̄20); 2.692(57)(03̄2,1̄22,2̄1̄2); and 2.485(39)(21̄2,1̄3̄2,02̄4). The structure of pauladamsite (R1 = 10.6% for 2086 Fo > 4σF) contains Cu2+O6 octahedra, SO4 tetrahedra and Se4+O3 pyramids. There are four different CuO6 octahedra, each of which exhibits typical Jahn-Teller distortion, with four short equatorial Cu–O bonds and two much longer apical Cu–O bonds. The CuO6 octahedra share edges to form five-octahedra-wide bands extending along [100]. Adjacent bands are connected in the [011̄] direction by bridging SO4 tetrahedra and in the [011] direction by bridging Se4+O3 pyramids, thereby forming a framework.

Iron-rich (Fs:En ∼0.8) calcic pyroxenes that have been subjected to granulite-facies metamorphism contain up to seven generations of exsolution lamellae. They can be grouped into four stages. In stage 1 pigeonite exsolved parallel to ‘001’ and ‘100’ (where ‘hkl’ signifies ∼ (hkl)) and mostly inverted later to orthopyroxene. During stage 2 orthopyroxene exsolved parallel to (100), while during stage 3 orthopyroxene was quickly followed by metastable ‘001’ pigeonite. The stage 3 precipitates clearly grew and thickened together for some time. During stage 4 a ‘100’ pigeonite was exsolved. The stage 3 and 4 precipitates show evidence of reheating, dissolution and later, renewed growth. Sometimes orthopyroxenes of stage 3 have crossed a ‘001’ pigeonite lamella and caused it to invert by a shear mechanism.

Chemical analysis shows no rotation of the tie lines between Ca-rich and Ca-poor phases, in contrast to previous studies of Skaergaard and Bushveld pyroxenes. The geothermometers of Wood and Banno (1973) and Wells (1977) indicate solidus temperatures of about 850°C and 900°C respectively, but the geothermometers were found to be unsuitable for subsolidus conditions. We estimate the pressure to have been about 9 kbar during solidification. Estimates of nucleation temperatures obtained from the orientations of the exsolved lamellae (Robinson et al., 1977) were 850–700°C for stage 1, and 600–400°C for stage 3. We believe this geothermometer to be unreliable for the low temperatures involved in stage 4.

The formation and transformation of hydroxysulphate (GRSO4) and hydroxycarbonate (GRCO3) Green Rusts were studied in situ using synchrotron-based time-resolved small and wide angle X-ray scattering. The time-resolved data revealed, for the first time, the pH dependent transition from poorly-ordered schwertmannite (pH <6.5) into GRSO4 (pH ~6.8) followed by GRCO3 (at pH ~9.6). These data also showed that the addition of Zn to the starting sulphate Fe2+/Fe3+ solution resulted in a change in size of the GR unit-cell due to substitution of Zn into the GR structure.

The results of a HRTEM and electron diffraction investigation of a Cu- and Ag-rich cosalite, Cu1.2Ag0.9Pb6.7Bi8.2S20, from Ivigtut, Greenland, are presented. Electron diffraction patterns down [001] show pairs of satellite reflections at Gp±~1/8[140]* and Gp±~1/8[40]* in addition to the strong Bragg reflections of the underlying average structure. The superlattice corresponds to a compositional and displacive modulation G±qprim where qprim is the primary modulation vector 1/8[140]*. The superlattice is attributed to coupled Ag/Pb/Bi and Cu/□ ordering and associated structural relaxation. The HRTEM images show a complex moire texture due to the structural modulations. Cosalite from Ivigtut, Greenland, also forms coherent intergrowths with members of the lillianite–gustavite series (Pb3Bi2S6–PbAgBi3S6). A model for the intergrowth between the structures is presented based on sharing both S and Pb atoms in the PbS-like slabs in both structures along [010]cosalite.

Ammonium analyses of representative rocks from the Rosses granite complex (Ireland) and their constituent mineral show that any variation of magmatic origin has been completely obscured by pervasive hydrothermal alteration. The altered rocks are strongly enriched in the ammonium ion, most of which is held by chloritized biotite and sericitized plagioclase. The present ammonium content of the Rosses granites averages 13 ppm, but the original ammonium content of the magmas is estimated to have been less than 5 ppm. Potassium feldspars may preserve a better record of the original magmatic ammonium content than the whole rocks or the biotites.
