Sulphide mylonites are fine-grained massive sulphides which have deformed in a plastic manner. In the Renström Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au VMS deposit, one of several operating mines in the Early Proterozoic Skellefte District in Northern Sweden, shear-zone metamorphism has resulted in the development of mylonitic fabrics within the sulphides. The massive sulphide ore is hosted in a shallow submarine to subaerial volcano-sedimentary sequence which has been variably metamorphosed and deformed. Initially, the sequence underwent burial metamorphism which was followed by an amphibolite grade regional metamorphic event at pressures of around 7.5 kbar and temperatures of 540-600°C This has been overprinted by a retrogressive metamorphic event at greenschist facies (at ca. 400°C with concomitant ductile deformation. Finally the area was uplifted to shallower crustal levels with associated cataclastic deformation.

Both the regional and dynamic metamorphic events have resulted in the development of specific textures in the sulphide ores. Textural evidence indicates that pressure solution has been mainly responsible for the plastic deformation in pyrite, while the weaker sulphide minerals such as pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and galena have generally recrystallised in response to the high strains.

Sulphide mylonites are probably common rocks in many polydeformed massive sulphide deposits like Renström. They may have previously been misinterpreted as primary depositional textures.

The concentrations of U, Th, and K in a charnockite-alkali granite intrusive complex from SW Sweden and associated, partly charnockitized country rocks are presented. The charnockitic components have constant low U and Th levels throughout the compositional range with a mean Th/U ratio of 1.2 to 1.5. The transition from charnockite to granite is marked by a sharp increase in Th and U concentrations with mean Th/U ratios increasing to 3.4 4.4. However, the K concentration increases relatively smoothly with increasing acidity through the compositional range studied. Late shearing of the alkali granite led to significant Th depletion with little change in the U and K concentrations. Charnockitization of the country rock granite gneisses is marked by depletion in Th and K while the U content is almost unchanged.

It is suggested that the behaviour of U and Th reflects the tendency for Th to associate with magma-dissolved water whilst U shows a greater affinity for coexisting free volatiles. In the absence of a significant free volatile phase during crystallization of this charnockite-granite suite, U was incorporated into primary mineral lattice sites whereas Th entered sites from which it could be liberated more easily.

Efflorescences in the geothermal field of SE Melos, Greece, contain significant amounts of hydrated Al sulphate, alunogen, which could represent the Melian alumen exploited in Roman times and commended by Pliny. The efflorescences at subaerial fumaroles are explained as follows: Sulphur crystallizes on oxidation of H2S emanating from depth. Weathering produces sulphuric acid enhancing groundwater alteration of volcanic rocks. The high geothermal gradient and arid climate stimulate efflorescences. Salts are recycled during wet and dry weather leading to Al-enrichment on loss of Fe(II,III) and other cations. δ34S‰ V-CDT values for sulphur in fumarole sublimates, solfatara soils and ‘veins’ range from —0.3 to 6.4‰, mean 3.8‰ (n = 8) while Al, Ca and Mg-sulphates in diverse settings range from —4.1 to 6.8‰ (n = 16). The values for sulphur indicate that the initial H2S had an igneous source and the signature is largely inherited by the sulphates.

This study aims to underpin research into the exploitation of industrial minerals in the Roman period. When searching for early alumen workings, areas with evidence of acid sulphate alteration (white rocks) and sulphurous fumarole activity should be investigated.

Xocomecatlite and tlalocite were found at the Bambollita mine near Moctezuma, Sonora. Xocomecatlite is probably orthorhombic, and an indexed cell based on the powder data gave a 12.140 A, b 14.318, c 11.662. Based on this cell, the empirical contents are Cu36.6 Zn1.7 (TeO4)12.5 (OH)51.6 or Cu3TeO4(OH)4. Tellurate was found both microchemically and by spectrophotometry. Colour rich green (R.H.S. 132A) with pale streak, H = 4. Optically negative with α = 1.775, β = 1.900, γ = 1.920. G = 4.65.

Tlalocite is optically orthorhombic but the cell could not be indexed; only powder data are presented. Chemical analysis showed both tellurite and tellurate and led to the formula

Colour pale blue (R.H.S. 121A) with a whitish streak; H = 1, gummy and sectile. G = 4.55.

Plotting stability fields for various Te species at 25°C in terms of Eh and pH showed that TeO42−.aq can exist in nature over a wide pH range, but only under extreme conditions of oxidation.

The crystal structure of kintoreite, PbFe3(PO4)2(OH,H2O)6, has been refined. The mineral is rhombohedral, Rm with a = 7.3310(7), c = 16.885(2) Å, Z = 3; the structure has been refined to R = 3.0% and Rw = 3.0% using 183 observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. Kintoreite has the alunite-type structure which consists of sheets of corner-sharing Fe(O,OH)6 octahedra parallel to (001). The sheets are composed of clusters of three corner-linked octahedra which are tilted so that the three apical O atoms form the base of the XO4 tetrahedra. The clusters of octahedra are linked to similar groups by corner-sharing to form six membered rings. The Pb cations occupy the cavities between pairs of octahedral sheets and are surrounded by six oxygen atoms from the tetrahedra and six oxygen atoms from the octahedra to form a very distorted icosahedron. The mean bond lengths for the various coordination polyhedra are X–O 1.55 Å, (X= P, As, S); Fe–(O, OH) 2.01 Å; Pb–O 2.84 Å. The composition of the crystal used in the refinement was PbFe3(PO4)1.3(AsO4)0.4(SO4)0.3(OH,H2O)6. The XO4 anions are disordered, as in beudantite, rather than being ordered, as they are claimed to be in corkite.

Using solution techniques, ΔG°f(298.2k) has been calculated for schröckingerite, NaCa3UO2(CO3)3 SO4F · 10H2O, and grimselite, NaK3UO2(CO3)3 · H2O. The values are −8077.3 ±8.7 and −4051.3 ±1.8 kJ mol−1 respectively. ΔH°f(298.2k) for grimselite is −4359.0 ± 1.8 kJ mol−1. An estimate for ΔG°f of the synthetic compound Na4UO2(CO3)3(s) using previously published equilibria has been made, −3720.0±9.7 kJ mol−1. The results have been used to reconstruct the chemical environments in which these and related compounds can form. Grimselite is only stable at relatively high activities of K(aq)+ and the alkali metal carbonates containing only potassium or sodium ions have not been reported to occur naturally. This is most probably due to their relatively high solubility in water. Schröckingerite can form from solutions which are more than saturated with respect to calcite and fluorite. The close relationship of schröckingerite with gypsum, observed frequently in the field, is evident from synthetic and solution studies.

Philrothite, ideally TlAs3S5, is a new mineral from the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs as very rare crystals up to 200 mm across on realgar associated with smithite, rutile and sartorite. Philrothite is opaque with a metallic lustre and shows a dark brown streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN25) is 128 kg/mm2 (range: 120–137) (Mohs hardness of 3–3½). In reflected light philrothite is moderately bireflectant and weakly pleochroic from dark grey to light grey. Under crossed polars it is anisotropic with grey to bluish rotation tints. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance percentages for the four COM wavelengths (Rmin and Rmax) are: 26.5, 28.8 (471.1 nm), 25.4, 27.2 (548.3 nm), 24.6, 26.3 (586.6 nm) and 24.0, 25.1 (652.3 nm), respectively.

Philrothite is monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a = 8.013(2), b = 24.829(4), c = 11.762(3) Å, β = 132.84(2)°, V = 1715.9(7) Å3, Z = 8. It represents the N = 4 homologue of the sartorite homologous series. In the crystal structure [R1 = 0.098 for 1217 reflections with I > 2σ(I)], Tl assumes tricapped prismatic sites alternating to form columns perpendicular to the b axis. Between the zigzag walls of Tl coordination prisms, coordination pyramids of As(Sb) form diagonally-oriented double layers separated by broader interspaces which house the lone electron pairs of these elements.

The eight strongest calculated powder-diffraction lines [d in Å(I/I0) (hkl)] are: 12.4145 (52) (020); 3.6768 (100) (61); 3.4535 (45) (131); 3.0150 (46) (53); 2.8941 (52) (81); 2.7685 (76) (230); 2.7642 (77) (34); 2.3239 (52) (092). A mean of five electron microprobe analyses gave Tl 26.28(12), Pb 6.69(8), Ag 2.50(4), Cu 0.04(2), Hg 0.07(2), As 32.50(13), Sb 3.15(3), S 26.35(10), total 97.58 wt.%, corresponding, on the basis of a total of nine atoms, to (Tl0.789Pb0.198)∑=0.987 (As2.662Sb0.159Ag0.142Cu0.004Hg0.002)∑=2.969S5.044. The new mineral has been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (2013-066) and named for Philippe Roth (b. 1963), geophysicist and well known mineral expert on the Lengenbach minerals for more than 25 years.

Spinels associated with discordant bodies of iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite are described from the Amandelbult Platinum mine in the northwestern part of the Bushveld Complex. The spinels are divided into three groups, disseminated Ti-magnetite, disseminated Fe-Ti-Cr spinel and massive Fe-Ti-Cr spinel. The Fe-Ti-Cr spinels show a range of unusual compositions intermediate between chromite and Ti-magnetite. A relationship was found between stratigraphic height and spinel-type, with the Fe-Ti-Cr spinels restricted to pegmatites from the Upper Critical zone and Ti-magnetite to pegmatites from the Lower Main zone. Ilmenite is a ubiquitous component of all of the pegmatites examined here. The massive Fe-Ti-Cr oxide pegmatites are found only where earlier-formed chromitite layers are juxtaposed with sheet-like bodies of olivine-clinopyroxene pegmatite. A distinct thickening of the original chromitite layers in this situation, and compositional gradients within them, points to accretion of Fe-Ti-Cr spinels onto them prior to partial sub-solidus re-equilibration. Analytical data are presented for these spinels and for the Ti-magnetite.

The composition of the Fe-Ti-Cr spinels is not duplicated by cumulus spinels in the Bushveld Complex, but the compositions and microtextures of the disseminated Ti-magnetite are very similar to cumulus Ti-magnetite from the Upper zone. Accordingly, it is deduced that the Ti-magnetite in the pegmatites from the Lower Main zone, together with the ilmenite, crystallized at magmatic temperatures from a suitable Fe-Ti-rich silicate-oxide melt. No evidence has been found to link the pegmatites to hydrothermal fluids. The Cr-rich nature of the disseminated spinels in pegmatites from the Upper Critical zone suggests that the pegmatite melt was richer in chromium at this stratigraphic height, although re-equilibration with earlier-formed cumulus chromite also occurred. Formation of the Fe-Ti-Cr oxide pegmatites reflects a complex process that is incompletely understood and why new oxides plate onto pre-existing chromitite layers that are juxtaposed with Fe-rich ultramafic pegmatites is a matter of conjecture.

Benleonardite, ideally Ag8(Sb,As)Te2S3 with Sb > As, is a new mineral species that occurs in ore specimens collected from the dumps of the disused Bambolla mine, Moctezuma, Mexico. The associated minerals are acanthite, hessite, an unnamed Ag4TeS phase, pyrite, sphalerite, and native silver. Together with benleonardite, these form thin black crusts in fractures filled with quartz and dolomite in highly altered, tuffaceous, andesitic and rhyolitic rocks. Benleonardite is an opaque mineral and, in reflected plane-polarized light in air, it is weakly bireflectant from very pale light blue to slightly darker blue. It is not pleochroic. Luminance values (relative to the CIE illuminant C) for Ro and R′e computed from visible spectrum reflectance data for the most bireflectant grain, are 33.6 and 31.7% in air, and 18.3 and 16.5% in Zeiss oil (ND 1.515) respectively. Vickers micro-indentation hardness is 105–125 (VHN25). The X-ray powder diffraction pattern could be indexed on a tetragonal cell with a 6.603(5) and c 12.726(6) Å; for Z = 2, the calculated density is 7.79 g/cm2 for the average analysis. The strongest five lines in the X-ray powder pattern are [d in Å (I) (hkl): 12.7 (70) (001); 3.188 (30) (021,004); 2.936 (100) (022); 2.608 (35) (023); 2.158 (35) (124).

A genetic linkage between W, (Cu, Mo)-mineralization and chlorite minerals, and the discrimination of different mineralization events in the magmatic-hydrothermal system of Borralha, northern Portugal, is discussed on the basis of textural relationships, crystal chemistry and stable isotopic data obtained from chlorite. Chlorite minerals were identified in assemblages with quartz, feldspars, tungstates and sulfides. X-ray diffraction studies of selected chlorite minerals shows a trioctahedral structural type. Electron probe micro-analyses identified four different compositions and associations: (1) Fe,Mn-chlorite with scheelite I; (2) Fe-chlorite with wolframite + scheelite II ± sulfide; (3) Fe,Mg-chlorite with molybdenite + bismuthinite; and (4) Mg,Fe-chlorite with chalcopyrite. The composition of Fe-chlorite (Al3.01Fe3+0.25Fe2+7.95Mn0.26Mg0.19)11.66(Si5.44Al2.56)8O20(OH)8 corresponds to daphnite and Fe,Mn-chlorite (Al2.69Fe3+0.02 Fe2+7.54Mn1.08Mg0.62)11.89(Si5.31Al2.68)4O20(OH)8 to a mixed composition between daphnite and amesite. The Fe,Mg-chlorite (Al2.89Fe3+0.24Fe2+6.42Mn0.21Mg2.08)11.84 (Si5.31Al2.79)8F0.31O20(OH)8 corresponds to ripidolite and Mg,Fe-chlorite (Al2.63Fe3+0.37Fe2+1.72Mn0.01Mg6.40Ca0.26)11.39(Si6.02Al1.98)8O20(OH)8 to pychnochlorite.

Chlorite geothermometry estimates a temperature for Fe,Mn-chlorite (scheelite I) from 400°C to 500°C, for Fe-chlorite (Mn-rich wolframite + scheelite II ± sulfide) from 250 to 350°C, for Fe,Mg-chlorite (Mo-mineralization) from 200°C to 250°C and for Mg,Fe-chlorite at ~150°C. Oxygen isotopes (V-SMOW) yielded values of +3.8 (1σ) (Fe-chlorite), +6.91 (1σ) (Fe,Mn-chlorite) and +1.5 (1σ) (Fe,Mg-chlorite). The calculated δ18OF of Fe- and Fe,Mg-chlorite is ~+3.75 (1σ) and +1.45 (1σ) for the mineralizing fluid, whereas for Fe,Mn-chlorite it is +8.17 (1σ). The δ18O data obtained from quartz in W- and Mo-mineralization yielded values of +12.6 and +11.4 (1σ), whereas for adularia δ18O is about +10 (1σ). These estimates allow us to conclude that the Fe,Mn-chlorite crystallized from a magmatic-hydrothermal fluid, whereas the Fe- and Fe,Mg-chlorite quartz and adularia resulted from a mixed contribution between meteoric and magmatic-hydrothermal fluid.

The Altar Stone at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, UK, is enigmatic in that it differs markedly from the other bluestones. It is a grey–green, micaceous sandstone and has been considered to be derived from the Old Red Sandstone sequences of South Wales. Previous studies, however, have been based on presumed derived fragments (debitage) that have been identified visually as coming from the Altar Stone. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyses were conducted on these fragments (ex situ) as well as on the Altar Stone (in situ). Light elements (Z<37) in the Altar Stone analyses, performed after a night of heavy rain, were affected by surface and pore water that attenuate low energy X-rays, however the dry analyses of debitage fragments produced data for a full suite of elements. High Z elements, including Zr, Nb, Sr, Pb, Th and U, all occupy the same compositional space in the Altar Stone and debitage fragments, and are statistically indistinguishable, indicating the fragments are derived from the Altar Stone. Barium compares very closely between the debitage and Altar Stone, with differences being related to variable baryte distribution in the Altar Stone, limited accessibility of its surface for analysis, and probably to surface weathering.

A notable feature of the Altar Stone sandstone is the presence of baryte (up to 0.8 modal%), manifest as relatively high Ba in both the debitage and the Altar Stone. These high Ba contents are in marked contrast with those in a small set of Old Red Sandstone field samples, analysed alongside the Altar Stone and debitage fragments, raising the possibility that the Altar Stone may not have been sourced from the Old Red Sandstone sequences of Wales. This high Ba ‘fingerprint’, related to the presence of baryte, may provide a rapid test using pXRF in the search for the source of the Stonehenge Altar Stone.

Tennantite-(Hg), Cu6(Cu4Hg2)As4S13, was approved as a new mineral species (IMA2020-063) from the Lengenbach quarry, Imfeld, Binn Valley, Canton Valais, Switzerland. It was identified as an aggregate of black metallic tetrahedral crystals, less than 0.1 mm in size, intimately associated with sinnerite, and grown on realgar. In reflected light, tennantite-(Hg) is isotropic, grey in colour, with creamy tints. Minimum and maximum reflectance data for COM wavelengths in air are [λ (nm): R (%)]: 470: 29.1; 546: 29.1; 589: 28.5; 650: 27.7. Electron microprobe analysis gave (in wt.% – average of 7 spot analyses): Cu 32.57(42), Ag 6.38(19), Tl 0.29(14), Zn 0.04(5), Hg 17.94(2.27), Pb 0.70(51), As 17.83(61), Sb 0.34(8), S 24.10(41), total 100.19(1.04). The empirical formula of the sample studied, recalculated on the basis of ΣMe = 16 atoms per formula unit, is (Cu4.69Ag1.04Tl0.03)Σ5.76(Cu4.35Hg1.58Pb0.06Zn0.01)Σ6.00(As4.20Sb0.05)Σ4.25S13.26. Tennantite-(Hg) is cubic, I$\overline 4$3m, with a = 10.455(7) Å, V = 1143(2) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure of tennantite-(Hg) has been refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to a final R1 = 0.0897 on the basis of 214 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) and 22 refined parameters. Tennantite-(Hg) is isotypic with other members of the tetrahedrite group. Mercury is hosted at the tetrahedrally coordinated M(1) site, in accord with the relatively long M(1)–S(1) distance (2.389 Å), similar to that observed in tetrahedrite-(Hg). Minor Ag is located at the triangularly-coordinated and split M(2) site. Other occurrences of tennantite-(Hg) are briefly reviewed and the Lengenbach finding is described within the framework of previous knowledge about the Hg mineralogy at this locality.

The Beaver Bay diabase forms an irregular sill-like intrusion about 3000 feet in thickness exposed over a distance of approximately six miles from Split Rock to Beaver Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior, Minnesota. It is intrusive into the Keeweenaw volcanic series above the Duluth gabbro to which it is almost certainly related. It is the largest of many such sills in this region and includes several petrographic facies grading from troctolite, through olivine-gabbro, normal gabbro, and ferrogabbro to red granite.

Selfridge (1936) examined by chemical, optical, and X-ray powder methods a large number of specimens of serpentine minerals (ideal formula H4Mg3Si2O9), many of which were known as antigorite. He found that nearly all gave similar powder photographs, indicating a close structural relationship, but that there were noticeable differences on the basis of which the specimens could be separated into two groups, one giving a photograph similar to that of chrysotile asbestos, and the other containing the varieties called antigorite. Gruner (1937) came to similar conclusions, and in addition he indexed most of the reflections using the cell dimensions a 5.33, b 18.5, c 2 x 7.33 Å., β 93°, remarking in particular on the correspondence between 001 reflections in the two groups.

In the Donegal Granite garnet occurs as an accessory mineral in muscovite-granties, pegmatites, and aplites. The composition of the garnet in fourteen samples of granitic rock has been determined from the physical properties and three new chemical analyses are given. All the samples examined are intermediate in composition between almandine and spessartine. The reason for the high manganese content in garnet from granites is discussed.

Tsangpoite, ideally Ca5(PO4)2(SiO4), the hexagonal polymorph of silicocarnotite, and matyhite, ideally Ca9(Ca0.5□0.5)Fe(PO4)7, the Fe-analogue of Ca-merrillite, were identified from the D'Orbigny angrite meteorite by electron probe microanalysis, electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. On the basis of electron diffraction, the symmetry of tsangpoite was shown to be hexagonal, P63/m or P63, with a = 9.489(4) Å, c = 6.991(6) Å, V = 545.1(6) Å3 and Z = 2 for 12 oxygen atoms per formula unit, and that of matyhite was shown to be trigonal, R3c, with a = 10.456 (7) Å, c = 37.408(34) Å, V = 3541.6 (4.8) Å3 and Z = 6 for 28 oxygen atoms per formula unit. On the basis of their constant association with the grain-boundary assemblage: Fe sulfide + ulvöspinel + Al–Ti-bearing hedenbergite + fayalite–kirschsteinite intergrowth, the formation of tsangpoite and matyhite, along with kuratite (the Fe-analogue of rhönite), can be readily rationalised as crystallisation from residue magmas at the final stage of the D'Orbigny meteorite formation. Alternatively, the close petrographic relations between tsangpoite/matyhite and the resorbed Fe sulfide rimmed by fayalite + kirschsteinite symplectite, such as the nucleation of tsangpoite in association with magnetite ± other phases within Fe sulfide and the common outward growth of needle-like tsangpoite or plate-like matyhite from the fayalite–kirschsteinite symplectic rim of Fe sulfide into hedenbergite, infer that these new minerals and the grain-boundary assemblage might represent metasomatic products resulting from reactions between an intruding metasomatic agent and the porous olivine–plagioclase plate + fayalite-kirschsteinite overgrowth + augite + Fe sulfide aggregates. Still further thermochemical and kinetics evidence is required to clarify the exact formation mechanisms/conditions of the euhedral tsangpoite, matyhite and kuratite at the grain boundary of the D'Orbigny angrite.

A series of long-term laboratory experiments was started in 1995 to investigate longer-term dissolution/ precipitation reactions that may occur in the alkaline disturbed zone surrounding a cementitious repository for radioactive waste. They consist of samples of UK basement rock reacting with either Na-K-Ca-OH water ('young' cement porewater) or Ca-OH water ('evolved' cement porewater) at 70°C. This paper summarizes results of reactions occurring over the first 15 months. Experiments of both fluid types showed many similar features, though primary mineral dissolution and secondary mineral precipitation were more extensive in the experiments involving Na-K-Ca (younger) cement porefluids compared to more evolved (Ca-rich) cement porefluids. Dissolution of dolomite, and to a lesser extent silicates (probably K-feldspar, but also possibly mica) occurred relatively rapidly at 70°C. Dolomite dissolution may have been a key factor in reducing pH values, and may be a key mineral in controlling the extent of alkaline disturbed zones. Dissolution was followed by precipitation of brucite close to dolomite grains, at least two generations of C-S-H phases (which may have contained variable amounts of K, Al and Mg); overgrowths of calcite; small crystals of hydroxyapophyllite; and elongate crystals of celestite. Though hydroxyapophyllite was observed (a phase commonly associated with zeolites), there was no evidence for the formation of zeolites in the experiments. Fluid chemical changes track the mineralogical changes, with C-S-H phases being a major control on fluid chemistry. In the 'young' porewater experiments there were decreases in pH, and K, Ca and Mg concentrations, together with transitory increases in SiO2 concentrations. In the 'evolved' porewater experiments there were decreases in pH, Mg, Ca and Sr concentrations, together with small increases in K and SiO2 concentrations. A number of experiments are still running, and will be sampled in coming years.

Four different palladium and platinum bismuthotellurides, one containing major mercury, have been identified in the ore from Rustenburg mine on the Merensky Reef. The composition of each phase was determined by electronprobe microanalysis, and X-ray powder data are presented for three of these phases. Quantitative spectral reflectivity values at 470, 546, 589, and 650 mμ were obtained on areas of 1–10µ. Similar phases have been located in the ore from Union mine.

Two of these phases are shown to be moncheïte and kotulskite. From two electronprobe microanalyses, kotulskite is shown to be Pd(Te,Bi). The other two phases are new minerals: analysis of one of them gives the composition (Pd,Pt)(Te, Bi)2, containing 23·1% Pd, 1·8% Pt, 50·8 % Te, 14·2 % Bi, with strongest X-ray powder lines at 2·92 (10), 2·10 (6), 2·02 (3), and 1·54Å (3), and cell parameters a 3·978±0·001, c 5·125±0·002; it is probably isostructural with moncheïte, and an isomorphous series may exist between them; the name merenskyite is proposed for this mineral, after Dr. Hans Merensky who was mainly responsible for discovering the platinoid bearing ‘reef’; it is commonly intergrown with kotulskite. For the second new phase (Mineral A), no X-ray data could be obtained, but a single electron-probe microanalysis gave a composition of Pd 27·8 %, Hg 12 %, Te 38·5 % and Bi 1·6 % suggesting the empirical formula (Pd,Hg)(Te,Bi).

The results of the electron-probe microanalysis of the three minerals from orthopyroxene-amphibole-spinel coronas between olivine and plagioclase in a troctolite from Sulitjelma, Norway, are presented. They are shown to be incompatible with a late-magmatic origin for the coronas, but compatible with an origin by diffusion of material in solution in an aqueous medium across the olivine-plagioclase interface. This theory is discussed on a quantitive basis in the light of the microanalytical data.

On the basis of field relationships, the main types of the Dartmoor granite can be referred to four stages of intrusion, the sequence being from relatively basic to thoroughly acid.

To this sequence is closely related an increase in the content of tourmaline and in the extent to which autopneumatolysis (with tourmalinization) was effective before solidification of the rock was complete.

Autopneumatolysis is well displayed by many minor intrusions referred to the latest stage. Such an intrusive rock is reddened more or less uniformly throughout its entire mass, and volatile constituents exhaled from its margin have reddened a contact-zone of the grey granite into which it is intrusive.
