Subconvexity bounds on the critical line are proved for general Epstein zeta-functions of $k$-ary quadratic forms. This is related to sup-norm bounds for unitary Eisenstein series on $\text{GL}(k)$ associated with the maximal parabolic of type $(k-1,1)$, and the exact sup-norm exponent is determined to be $(k-2)/8$ for $k\geqslant 4$. In particular, if $k$ is odd, this exponent is not in $\frac{1}{4}\mathbb{Z}$, which is relevant in the context of Sarnak’s purity conjecture and shows that it can in general not directly be generalized to Eisenstein series.

Let $R$ be a large field of characteristic $p$. We classify the supersingular simple modules of the pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke $R$-algebra ${\mathcal{H}}$ of a general reductive $p$-adic group $G$. We show that the functor of pro-$p$-Iwahori invariants behaves well when restricted to the representations compactly induced from an irreducible smooth $R$-representation $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ of a special parahoric subgroup $K$ of $G$. We give an almost-isomorphism between the center of ${\mathcal{H}}$ and the center of the spherical Hecke algebra ${\mathcal{H}}(G,K,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})$, and a Satake-type isomorphism for ${\mathcal{H}}(G,K,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})$. This generalizes results obtained by Ollivier for $G$ split and $K$ hyperspecial to $G$ general and $K$ special.

Nous construisons une $KK$-théorie pour les algèbres de Banach équivariante par l’action d’un groupoïde et nous montrons la conjecture de Baum–Connes à coefficients commutatifs pour les groupes hyperboliques et pour les groupoïdes de Poincaré des feuilletages à base compacte qui peuvent être munis d’une métrique riemannienne longitudinale à courbure sectionnelle strictement négative.

We construct a $KK$-theory for Banach algebras, equivariant with respect to the action of a groupoid. We prove the Baum–Connes conjecture with commutative coefficients for hyperbolic groups and for the Poincaré groupoids of foliations with a compact base and a longitudinal Riemannian metrics with negative sectional curvature.

We consider a transitive uniformly quasi-conformal Anosov diffeomorphism $f$ of a compact manifold $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that if the stable and unstable distributions have dimensions greater than two, then $f$ is $C^\infty$ conjugate to an affine Anosov automorphism of a finite factor of a torus. If the dimensions are at least two, the same conclusion holds under the additional assumption that $\mathcal{M}$ is an infranilmanifold. We also describe necessary and sufficient conditions for smoothness of conjugacy between such a diffeomorphism and a small perturbation.

One of the main obstacles in applying converse theorems to prove new cases of functoriality is that of stability of $\gamma$-factors for a certain class of $L$-functions obtained from the ‘Langlands–Shahidi’ method, where the $\gamma$-factors are defined inductively by means of ‘local coefficients’. The problem then becomes that of stability of local coefficients upon twisting the representation by a highly ramified character. In this paper we first establish that the inverses of certain local coefficients are, up to an abelian $\gamma$-factor, genuine Mellin transforms of partial Bessel functions of the type we analysed in our previous paper. The second main result is then the resulting stability of the local coefficients in this situation, which include all the cases of interest for functoriality. Hopefully, the analysis given here will open the door to a proof of the general stability and the equality of $\gamma$-factors obtained from different methods through integration over certain quotient spaces whose generic fibres are closed. They do not seem to have been studied before in any generality.

An analytically irreducible hypersurface germ $(S,0)\subset(\bm{C}^{d+1},0)$ is quasi-ordinary if it can be defined by the vanishing of the minimal polynomial $f\in\bm{C}\{X\}[Y]$ of a fractional power series in the variables $X=(X_1,\dots,X_d)$ which has characteristic monomials, generalizing the classical Newton–Puiseux characteristic exponents of the plane-branch case ($d=1$). We prove that the set of vertices of Newton polyhedra of resultants of $f$ and $h$ with respect to the indeterminate $Y$, for those polynomials $h$ which are not divisible by $f$, is a semigroup of rank $d$, generalizing the classical semigroup appearing in the plane-branch case. We show that some of the approximate roots of the polynomial $f$ are irreducible quasi-ordinary polynomials and that, together with the coordinates $X_1,\dots,X_d$, provide a set of generators of the semigroup from which we can recover the characteristic monomials and vice versa. Finally, we prove that the semigroups corresponding to any two parametrizations of $(S,0)$ are isomorphic and that this semigroup is a complete invariant of the embedded topological type of the germ $(S,0)$ as characterized by the work of Gau and Lipman.

Let X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field k. Nori constructed a category of vector bundles on X, called essentially finite vector bundles, which is reminiscent of the category of representations of the fundamental group (in characteristic zero). In fact, this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a pro-finite group scheme which controls all finite torsors. We show that essentially finite vector bundles coincide with those which become trivial after being pulled back by some proper and surjective morphism to X.

The relative trace formula is a tool in the theory of automorphic forms which was invented by Jacquet in order to study period integrals and relate them to Langlands functoriality. In this paper we give an analogue of Arthur’s spectral expansion of the trace formula to the relative setup in the context of $\text{GL}_n$. This is an important step toward application of the relative trace formula and it extends earlier work by several authors to higher rank. Our method is new and based on complex analysis and majorization of Eisenstein series. To that end we use recent lower bounds of Brumley for Rankin–Selberg $L$-functions at the edge of the critical strip.

Let $G$ be a simple simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathfrak{g}=\text{Lie}(G)$. We discuss various properties of nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, which have previously only been considered over $\mathbb{C}$. Using computational methods, we extend to positive characteristic various calculations of de Graaf with nilpotent orbits in exceptional Lie algebras. In particular, we classify those orbits which are reachable as well as those which satisfy a certain related condition due to Panyushev, and determine the codimension of the derived subalgebra $[\mathfrak{g}_{e},\mathfrak{g}_{e}]$ in the centraliser $\mathfrak{g}_{e}$ of any nilpotent element $e\in \mathfrak{g}$. Some of these calculations are used to show that the list of rigid nilpotent orbits in $\mathfrak{g}$, the classification of sheets of $\mathfrak{g}$ and the distribution of the nilpotent orbits amongst them are independent of good characteristic, remaining the same as in the characteristic zero case. We also give a comprehensive account of the theory of sheets in reductive Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of good characteristic.

In a recent paper, Gross and Reeder study the arithmetic properties of discrete Langlands parameters for semi-simple -adic groups, and they conjecture that a special class of these – the simple wild parameters – should correspond to -packets consisting of simple supercuspidal representations. We provide a construction of this correspondence, and show that the simple wild -packets satisfy many expected properties. In particular, they admit a description in terms of the Langlands dual group, and contain a unique generic element for a fixed Whittaker datum. Moreover, we prove their stability on an open subset of the regular semi-simple elements, and show that they satisfy a natural compatibility with respect to unramified base-change.

We study model-theoretic and stability-theoretic properties of the non-abelian free group in the light of Sela's recent result on stability and results announced by Bestvina and Feighn on ‘negligible subsets' of free groups. We point out analogies between the free group and so-called bad groups of finite Morley rank, and prove ‘non-CM-triviality' of the free group.

Let $Y$ be an abelian variety over a subfield $k\subset \mathbb{C}$ that is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if the Mumford–Tate conjecture for $Y$ is true, then also some refined integral and adelic conjectures due to Serre are true for $Y$. In particular, if a certain Hodge-maximality condition is satisfied, we obtain an adelic open image theorem for the Galois representation on the (full) Tate module of $Y$. We also obtain an (unconditional) adelic open image theorem for K3 surfaces. These results are special cases of a more general statement for the image of a natural adelic representation of the fundamental group of a Shimura variety.

Under an assumption on the existence of $p$-adic Galois representations, we carry out Taylor–Wiles patching (in the derived category) for the completed homology of the locally symmetric spaces associated with $\operatorname{GL}_{n}$ over a number field. We use our construction, and some new results in non-commutative algebra, to show that standard conjectures on completed homology imply ‘big $R=\text{big}~\mathbb{T}$’ theorems in situations where one cannot hope to appeal to the Zariski density of classical points (in contrast to all previous results of this kind). In the case where $n=2$ and $p$ splits completely in the number field, we relate our construction to the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$.

We construct the $p$-adic standard $L$-functions for ordinary families of Hecke eigensystems of the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ using the doubling method. We explain a clear and simple strategy of choosing the local sections for the Siegel Eisenstein series on the doubling group $\operatorname{Sp}(4n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$, which guarantees the nonvanishing of local zeta integrals and allows us to $p$-adically interpolate the restrictions of the Siegel Eisenstein series to $\operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}\times \operatorname{Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$.

We construct algebras of pseudodifferential operators on a continuous family groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ that are closed under holomorphic functional calculus, contain the algebra of all pseudodifferential operators of order 0 on $\mathcal{G}$ as a dense subalgebra and reflect the smooth structure of the groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, when $\mathcal{G}$ is smooth. As an application, we get a better understanding on the structure of inverses of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on classes of non-compact manifolds. For the construction of these algebras closed under holomorphic functional calculus, we develop three methods: one using semi-ideals, one using commutators and one based on Schwartz spaces on the groupoid.

One of our main results is to reduce the construction of spectrally invariant algebras of order 0 pseudodifferential operators to the analogous problem for regularizing operators. We then show that, in the case of the generalized ‘cusp’-calculi$c_n$, $n\ge2$, it is possible to construct algebras of regularizing operators that are closed under holomorphic functional calculus and consist of smooth kernels. For $n=1$, this was shown not to be possible by the first author in an earlier paper.

Suppose that $K$ is a subfield of $\mathbb{C}$ for which the $\ell$-adic cyclotomic character has infinite image. Suppose that $C$ is a curve of genus $g\geq3$ defined over $K$, and that $\xi$ is a $K$-rational point of $C$. This paper considers the relation between the actions of the mapping class group of the pointed topological curve $(C^{\mathrm{an}},\xi)$ and the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$ on the $\ell$-adic prounipotent fundamental group of $(C^{\mathrm{an}},\xi)$. A close relationship is established between

1. the image of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in the automorphism group of the $\ell$-adic unipotent fundamental group of $C$; and

2. the $\ell$-adic Galois cohomology classes associated to the algebraic $1$-cycle $C- C^{-}$ in the Jacobian of $C$, and to the algebraic $0$-cycle $(2g-2)\xi-K_C$ in $C$.

In this paper, we prove an ‘explicit reciprocity law’ relating Howard’s system of big Heegner points to a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function (constructed here) interpolating the $p$-adic Rankin $L$-series of Bertolini–Darmon–Prasanna in Hida families. As applications, we obtain a direct relation between classical Heegner cycles and the higher weight specializations of big Heegner points, refining earlier work of the author, and prove the vanishing of Selmer groups of CM elliptic curves twisted by 2-dimensional Artin representations in cases predicted by the equivariant Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.

This work is devoted to the study of uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions. We establish some spectral inequalities for control subsets that are thick with respect to some unbounded densities growing almost linearly at infinity, and provide quantitative estimates, with respect to the energy level of the Hermite functions seen as eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator, for the constants appearing in these spectral estimates. These spectral inequalities allow us to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations enjoying specific regularizing effects. More precisely, for a given index $\frac {1}{2} \leq \mu <1$, we deduce sufficient geometric conditions on control subsets to ensure the null-controllability of evolution equations enjoying regularizing effects in the symmetric Gelfand–Shilov space $S^{\mu }_{\mu }(\mathbb {R}^{n})$. These results apply in particular to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations associated to certain classes of hypoelliptic non-self-adjoint quadratic operators, or to fractional harmonic oscillators.
