Igusa varieties are smooth varieties in positive characteristic p which are closely related to Shimura varieties and Rapoport–Zink spaces. One motivation for studying Igusa varieties is to analyse the representations in the cohomology of Shimura varieties which may be ramified at p. The main purpose of this work is to stabilize the trace formula for the cohomology of Igusa varieties arising from a PEL datum of type (A) or (C). Our proof is unconditional thanks to the recent proof of the fundamental lemma by Ngô, Waldspurger and many others.

An earlier work of Kottwitz, which inspired our work and proves the stable trace formula for the special fibres of PEL Shimura varieties with good reduction, provides an explicit way to stabilize terms at ∞. Stabilization away from p and ∞ is carried out by the usual Langlands–Shelstad transfer as in work of Kottwitz. The key point of our work is to develop an explicit method to handle the orbital integrals at p. Our approach has the technical advantage that we do not need to deal with twisted orbital integrals or the twisted fundamental lemma.

One application of our formula, among others, is the computation of the arithmetic cohomology of some compact PEL-type Shimura varieties of type (A) with non-trivial endoscopy. This is worked out in a preprint of the author's entitled ‘Galois representations arising from some compact Shimura varieties’.

In this paper we construct a $\mathbb{Q}$-linear tannakian category $\mathsf{MEM}_{1}$ of universal mixed elliptic motives over the moduli space ${\mathcal{M}}_{1,1}$ of elliptic curves. It contains $\mathsf{MTM}$, the category of mixed Tate motives unramified over the integers. Each object of $\mathsf{MEM}_{1}$ is an object of $\mathsf{MTM}$ endowed with an action of $\text{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ that is compatible with its structure. Universal mixed elliptic motives can be thought of as motivic local systems over ${\mathcal{M}}_{1,1}$ whose fiber over the tangential base point $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}/\unicode[STIX]{x2202}q$ at the cusp is a mixed Tate motive. The basic structure of the tannakian fundamental group of $\mathsf{MEM}$ is determined and the lowest order terms of a set (conjecturally, a minimal generating set) of relations are deduced from computations of Brown. This set of relations includes the arithmetic relations, which describe the ‘infinitesimal Galois action’. We use the presentation to give a new and more conceptual proof of the Ihara–Takao congruences.

We prove that, if X is a variety over an uncountable algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero, then any irreducible exceptional divisor E on a resolution of singularities of X which is not uniruled, belongs to the image of the Nash map, i.e. corresponds to an irreducible component of the space of arcs on X centred in Sing X. This reduces the Nash problem of arcs to understanding which uniruled essential divisors are in the image of the Nash map, more generally, how to determine the uniruled essential divisors from the space of arcs.

This work is devoted to the study of uncertainty principles for finite combinations of Hermite functions. We establish some spectral inequalities for control subsets that are thick with respect to some unbounded densities growing almost linearly at infinity, and provide quantitative estimates, with respect to the energy level of the Hermite functions seen as eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator, for the constants appearing in these spectral estimates. These spectral inequalities allow us to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations enjoying specific regularizing effects. More precisely, for a given index $\frac {1}{2} \leq \mu <1$, we deduce sufficient geometric conditions on control subsets to ensure the null-controllability of evolution equations enjoying regularizing effects in the symmetric Gelfand–Shilov space $S^{\mu }_{\mu }(\mathbb {R}^{n})$. These results apply in particular to derive the null-controllability in any positive time for evolution equations associated to certain classes of hypoelliptic non-self-adjoint quadratic operators, or to fractional harmonic oscillators.

For a characteristic-$p\gt 0$ variety $X$ with controlled $F$-singularities, we state conditions which imply that a divisorial sheaf is Cohen–Macaulay or at least has depth $\geq $3 at certain points. This mirrors results of Kollár for varieties in characteristic 0. As an application, we show that relative canonical sheaves are compatible with arbitrary base change for certain families with sharply $F$-pure fibers.

The Poisson and Martin boundaries for invariant random walks on the dual of the orthogonal quantum groups $A_{\mathrm{o}}(F)$ are identified with higher-dimensional Podleś spheres that we describe in terms of generators and relations. This provides the first such identification for random walks on non-amenable discrete quantum groups.

We define a motivic conductor for any presheaf with transfers F using the categorical framework developed for the theory of motives with modulus by Kahn, Miyazaki, Saito and Yamazaki. If F is a reciprocity sheaf, this conductor yields an increasing and exhaustive filtration on $F(L)$ , where L is any henselian discrete valuation field of geometric type over the perfect ground field. We show that if F is a smooth group scheme, then the motivic conductor extends the Rosenlicht–Serre conductor; if F assigns to X the group of finite characters on the abelianised étale fundamental group of X, then the motivic conductor agrees with the Artin conductor defined by Kato and Matsuda; and if F assigns to X the group of integrable rank $1$ connections (in characteristic $0$ ), then it agrees with the irregularity. We also show that this machinery gives rise to a conductor for torsors under finite flat group schemes over the base field, which we believe to be new. We introduce a general notion of conductors on presheaves with transfers and show that on a reciprocity sheaf, the motivic conductor is minimal and any conductor which is defined only for henselian discrete valuation fields of geometric type with perfect residue field can be uniquely extended to all such fields without any restriction on the residue field. For example, the Kato–Matsuda Artin conductor is characterised as the canonical extension of the classical Artin conductor defined in the case of a perfect residue field.

In this article, we begin by recalling the inversion formula for the convolution with the box spline. The equivariant cohomology and the equivariant $K$-theory with respect to a compact torus $G$ of various spaces associated to a linear action of $G$ in a vector space $M$ can both be described using some vector spaces of distributions, on the dual of the group $G$ or on the dual of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The morphism from $K$-theory to cohomology is analyzed, and multiplication by the Todd class is shown to correspond to the operator (deconvolution) inverting the semi-discrete convolution with a box spline. Finally, the multiplicities of the index of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator on $M$ are determined using the infinitesimal index of the symbol.

Let ${\mathcal{K}}$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Let ${\rm\Pi}$ and ${\rm\Pi}^{\prime }$ be irreducible generic cohomological automorphic representation of $\text{GL}(n)/{\mathcal{K}}$ and $\text{GL}(n-1)/{\mathcal{K}}$, respectively. Each of them can be given two natural rational structures over number fields. One is defined by the rational structure on topological cohomology, and the other is given in terms of the Whittaker model. The ratio between these rational structures is called a Whittaker period. An argument presented by Mahnkopf and Raghuram shows that, at least if ${\rm\Pi}$ is cuspidal and the weights of ${\rm\Pi}$ and ${\rm\Pi}^{\prime }$ are in a standard relative position, the critical values of the Rankin–Selberg product $L(s,{\rm\Pi}\times {\rm\Pi}^{\prime })$ are essentially algebraic multiples of the product of the Whittaker periods of ${\rm\Pi}$ and ${\rm\Pi}^{\prime }$. We show that, under certain regularity and polarization hypotheses, the Whittaker period of a cuspidal ${\rm\Pi}$ can be given a motivic interpretation, and can also be related to a critical value of the adjoint $L$-function of related automorphic representations of unitary groups. The resulting expressions for critical values of the Rankin–Selberg and adjoint $L$-functions are compatible with Deligne’s conjecture.

Soit $G$ un groupe réductif connexe déployé sur une extension finie $F$ de $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. Nous déterminons les extensions entre séries principales continues unitaires $p$-adiques et lisses modulo $p$ de $G(F)$ dans le cas générique. Pour cela, nous calculons le delta-foncteur $\text{H}^{\bullet }\text{Ord}_{B(F)}$ des parties ordinaires dérivées d’Emerton relatif à un sous-groupe de Borel sur certaines représentations induites de $G(F)$ en utilisant une filtration de Bruhat. Ces extensions interviennent dans le programme de Langlands $p$-adique et modulo $p$.

Let $\mathfrak{F}$ be a locally compact nonarchimedean field with residue characteristic $p$, and let $\mathrm{G} $ be the group of $\mathfrak{F}$-rational points of a connected split reductive group over $\mathfrak{F}$. For $k$ an arbitrary field of any characteristic, we study the homological properties of the Iwahori–Hecke $k$-algebra ${\mathrm{H} }^{\prime } $ and of the pro-$p$ Iwahori–Hecke $k$-algebra $\mathrm{H} $ of $\mathrm{G} $. We prove that both of these algebras are Gorenstein rings with self-injective dimension bounded above by the rank of $\mathrm{G} $. If $\mathrm{G} $ is semisimple, we also show that this upper bound is sharp, that both $\mathrm{H} $ and ${\mathrm{H} }^{\prime } $ are Auslander–Gorenstein, and that there is a duality functor on the finite length modules of $\mathrm{H} $ (respectively ${\mathrm{H} }^{\prime } $). We obtain the analogous Gorenstein and Auslander–Gorenstein properties for the graded rings associated to $\mathrm{H} $ and ${\mathrm{H} }^{\prime } $.

When $k$ has characteristic $p$, we prove that in ‘most’ cases $\mathrm{H} $ and ${\mathrm{H} }^{\prime } $ have infinite global dimension. In particular, we deduce that the category of smooth $k$-representations of $\mathrm{G} = {\mathrm{PGL} }_{2} ({ \mathbb{Q} }_{p} )$ generated by their invariant vectors under the pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup has infinite global dimension (at least if $k$ is algebraically closed).

We construct local and global metaplectic double covers of odd general spin groups, using the cover of Matsumoto of spin groups. Following Kazhdan and Patterson, a local exceptional representation is the unique irreducible quotient of a principal series representation, induced from a certain exceptional character. The global exceptional representation is obtained as the multi-residue of an Eisenstein series: it is an automorphic representation, and it decomposes as the restricted tensor product of local exceptional representations. As in the case of the small representation of $\mathit{SO}_{2n+1}$ of Bump, Friedberg, and Ginzburg, exceptional representations enjoy the vanishing of a large class of twisted Jacquet modules (locally), or Fourier coefficients (globally). Consequently they are useful in many settings, including lifting problems and Rankin–Selberg integrals. We describe one application, to a calculation of a co-period integral.

Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field, and let $G^{\sharp }$ be the group of $F$-rational points of an inner form of $\text{SL}_{n}$. We study Hecke algebras for all Bernstein components of $G^{\sharp }$, via restriction from an inner form $G$ of $\text{GL}_{n}(F)$.

For any packet of L-indistinguishable Bernstein components, we exhibit an explicit algebra whose module category is equivalent to the associated category of complex smooth $G^{\sharp }$-representations. This algebra comes from an idempotent in the full Hecke algebra of $G^{\sharp }$, and the idempotent is derived from a type for $G$. We show that the Hecke algebras for Bernstein components of $G^{\sharp }$ are similar to affine Hecke algebras of type $A$, yet in many cases are not Morita equivalent to any crossed product of an affine Hecke algebra with a finite group.

We construct $p$-adic families of Klingen–Eisenstein series and $L$-functions for cusp forms (not necessarily ordinary) unramified at an odd prime $p$ on definite unitary groups of signature $(r,0)$ (for any positive integer $r$) for a quadratic imaginary field ${\mathcal{K}}$ split at $p$. When $r=2$, we show that the constant term of the Klingen–Eisenstein family is divisible by a certain $p$-adic $L$-function.

In this paper we study certain sheaves of $p$-adically complete rings of differential operators on semistable models of the projective line over the ring of integers in a finite extension $L$ of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$. The global sections of these sheaves can be identified with (central reductions of) analytic distribution algebras of wide open congruence subgroups. It is shown that the global sections functor furnishes an equivalence between the categories of coherent module sheaves and finitely presented modules over the distribution algebras. Using the work of M. Emerton, we then describe admissible representations of $\text{GL}_{2}(L)$ in terms of sheaves on the projective limit of these formal schemes. As an application, we show that representations coming from certain equivariant line bundles on Drinfeld’s first étale covering of the $p$-adic upper half plane are admissible.

In Albano, Bove and Mughetti [J. Funct. Anal. 274(10) (2018), 2725–2753]; Bove and Mughetti [Anal. PDE 10(7) (2017), 1613–1635] it was shown that Treves conjecture for the real analytic hypoellipticity of sums of squares operators does not hold. Models were proposed where the critical points causing a non-analytic regularity might be interpreted as strata. We stress that up to now there is no notion of stratum which could replace the original Treves stratum. In the proposed models such ‘strata’ were non-symplectic analytic submanifolds of the characteristic variety. In this note we modify one of those models in such a way that the critical points are a symplectic submanifold of the characteristic variety while still not being a Treves stratum. We show that the operator is analytic hypoelliptic.

We study countable saturation of metric reduced products and introduce continuous fields of metric structures indexed by locally compact, separable, completely metrizable spaces. Saturation of the reduced product depends both on the underlying index space and the model. By using the Gelfand–Naimark duality we conclude that the assertion that the Stone–Čech remainder of the half-line has only trivial automorphisms is independent from ZFC (Zermelo-Fraenkel axiomatization of set theory with the Axiom of Choice). Consistency of this statement follows from the Proper Forcing Axiom, and this is the first known example of a connected space with this property.

In this paper we extend the generalized algebraic fundamental group constructed in Esnault and Hogadi, (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364(5) (2012), 2429–2442) to general fibered categories using the language of gerbes. As an application we obtain a Tannakian interpretation for the Nori fundamental gerbe defined in Borne and Vistoli (J. Algebraic Geom. (2014), S1056–3911, 00638-X) for nonsmooth non-pseudo-proper algebraic stacks.

We consider étale motivic or Lichtenbaum cohomology and its relation to algebraic cycles. We give an geometric interpretation of Lichtenbaum cohomology and use it to show that the usual integral cycle maps extend to maps on integral Lichtenbaum cohomology. We also show that Lichtenbaum cohomology, in contrast to the usual motivic cohomology, compares well with integral cohomology theories. For example, we formulate integral étale versions of the Hodge and the Tate conjecture, and show that these are equivalent to the usual rational conjectures.

We consider variational properties of some numerical invariants, measuring convergence of local horizontal sections, associated to differential modules on polyannuli over a nonarchimedean field of characteristic 0. This extends prior work in the one-dimensional case of Christol, Dwork, Robba, Young, et al. Our results do not require positive residue characteristic; thus besides their relevance to the study of Swan conductors for isocrystals, they are germane to the formal classification of flat meromorphic connections on complex manifolds.
