We give a moduli interpretation of the outer automorphism group Out of a finite-dimensional algebra similar to that of the Picard group of a scheme. We deduce that the connected component of Out is invariant under derived and stable equivalences. This allows us to transfer gradings between algebras and gives rise to conjectural homological constructions of interesting gradings on blocks of finite groups with abelian defect. We give applications to the lifting of stable equivalences to derived equivalences. We give a counterpart of the invariance result for smooth projective varieties: the product Pic0 × Aut0 is invariant under derived equivalence.

Soit $G$ un groupe réductif $p$-adique connexe. Nous effectuons une décomposition spectrale sur $G$ à partir de la formule d’inversion de Fourier utilisée dans ‘Une formule de Plancherel pour l’algèbre de Hecke d’un groupe réductif $p$-adique’, V. Heiermann, Commun. Math. Helv.76 (2001), 388–415. Nous en déduisons essentiellement qu’une représentation cuspidale d’un sous-groupe de Levi M appartient au support cuspidal d’une représentation de carré intégrable de $G$ si et seulement si c’est un pôle de la fonction $\mu$ de Harish-Chandra d’ordre égal au rang parabolique de M. Ces pôles sont d’ordre maximal. Plus précisément, nous montrons que cette condition est nécessaire et que sa suffisance équivaut à une propriété combinatoire de la fonction $\mu$ de Harish-Chandra qui s’avère être une conséquence d’un résultat de E. Opdam. En outre, nous obtenons des identités entre des combinaisons linéaires de coefficients matriciels. Ces identités contiennent des informations sur le degré formel des représentations de carré intégrable ainsi que sur leur position dans la représentation induite.

Let $G$ be a reductive connected $p$-adic group. With help of the Fourier inversion formula used in ‘Une formule de Plancherel pour l’algèbre de Hecke d’un groupe réductif $p$-adique’, V. Heiermann, Commun. Math. Helv.76 (2001), 388–415, we give a spectral decomposition on $G$. In particular, we deduce from it essentially that a cuspidal representation of a Levi subgroup $M$ is in the cuspidal support of a square-integrable representation of $G$ if and only if it is a pole of Harish-Chandra’s $\mu$-function of order equal to the parabolic rank of $M$. These poles are of maximal order. In more explicit terms, we show that this condition is necessary and that its sufficiency is equivalent to a combinatorical property of Harish-Chandra’s $\mu$-function, which appears to be a consequence of a result of E. Opdam. We get also identities between some linear combinations of matrix coefficients. These identities contain information on the formal degree of square-integrable representations and on their position in the induced representation.

In this paper, we prove a certain maximality property of the Shimura subgroup amongst the multiplicative-type subgroups of $J_0(N)$, and apply this to verify conjectures of Stevens on the existence of certain canonical parametrizations of rational elliptic curves by modular curves. We are also able to verify some of Stevens’s conjectures on the characterization of the elliptic curve in an isogeny class with minimal Faltings–Parshin height.

We study naturality properties of the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology under contact (+1)-surgery. This can be used as a calculational tool for the transverse invariant. As a consequence, we show that the Eliashberg–Chekanov twist knots En are not transversely simple for n odd and n > 3.

We provide asymptotics for the range $R_{n}$ of a random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice indexed by a random tree with $n$ vertices. Using Kingman’s subadditive ergodic theorem, we prove under general assumptions that $n^{-1}R_{n}$ converges to a constant, and we give conditions ensuring that the limiting constant is strictly positive. On the other hand, in dimension $4$, and in the case of a symmetric random walk with exponential moments, we prove that $R_{n}$ grows like $n/\!\log n$. We apply our results to asymptotics for the range of a branching random walk when the initial size of the population tends to infinity.

We study the birational geometry of irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties arising as varieties of lines of general cubic fourfolds containing a cubic scroll. We compute the ample and moving cones, and exhibit a birational automorphism of infinite order explaining the chamber decomposition of the moving cone.

The spaces of Sp(n)-, Sp(n) · U(1)- and Sp(n) · Sp(1)-invariant, translation-invariant, continuous convex valuations on the quaternionic vector space ℍn are studied. Combinatorial dimension formulae involving Young diagrams and Schur polynomials are proved.

Associated to a finite graph $X$ is its quantum automorphism group $G(X)$. We prove a formula of type $G(X*Y)=G(X)*_{\mathrm{w}}G(Y)$, where $*_{\mathrm{w}}$ is a free wreath product. Then we discuss representation theory of free wreath products, with the conjectural formula $\mu(G*_{\mathrm{w}}H)=\mu(G)\boxtimes\mu(H)$, where $\mu$ is the associated spectral measure. This is verified in two situations: one using free probability techniques, the other one using planar algebras.

We prove certain depth bounds for Arthur’s endoscopic transfer of representations from classical groups to the corresponding general linear groups over local fields of characteristic 0, with some restrictions on the residue characteristic. We then use these results and the method of Deligne and Kazhdan of studying representation theory over close local fields to obtain, under some restrictions on the characteristic, the local Langlands correspondence for split classical groups over local function fields from the corresponding result of Arthur in characteristic 0.

We establish two results on three-dimensional del Pezzo fibrations in positive characteristic. First, we give an explicit bound for torsion index of relatively torsion line bundles. Second, we show the existence of purely inseparable sections with explicit bounded degree. To prove these results, we study log del Pezzo surfaces defined over imperfect fields.

In this paper we consider the dynamical system involved by the Ricci operator on the space of Kähler metrics of a Fano manifold. Nadel has defined an iteration scheme given by the Ricci operator and asked whether it has some non-trivial periodic points. First, we prove that no such periodic points can exist. We define the inverse of the Ricci operator and consider the dynamical behaviour of its iterates for a Fano Kähler–Einstein manifold. Then we define a finite-dimensional procedure to give an approximation of Kähler–Einstein metrics using this iterative procedure and apply it on ℂℙ2 blown up in three points.

We define the algebraic Dirac induction map ${\mathrm{Ind} }_{D} $ for graded affine Hecke algebras. The map ${\mathrm{Ind} }_{D} $ is a Hecke algebra analog of the explicit realization of the Baum–Connes assembly map in the $K$-theory of the reduced ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of a real reductive group using Dirac operators. The definition of ${\mathrm{Ind} }_{D} $ is uniform over the parameter space of the graded affine Hecke algebra. We show that the map ${\mathrm{Ind} }_{D} $ defines an isometric isomorphism from the space of elliptic characters of the Weyl group (relative to its reflection representation) to the space of elliptic characters of the graded affine Hecke algebra. We also study a related analytically defined global elliptic Dirac operator between unitary representations of the graded affine Hecke algebra which are realized in the spaces of sections of vector bundles associated to certain representations of the pin cover of the Weyl group. In this way we realize all irreducible discrete series modules of the Hecke algebra in the kernels (and indices) of such analytic Dirac operators. This can be viewed as a graded affine Hecke algebra analog of the construction of the discrete series representations of semisimple Lie groups due to Parthasarathy and to Atiyah and Schmid.

We use Heegaard Floer homology to define an invariant of homology cobordism. This invariant is isomorphic to a summand of the reduced Heegaard Floer homology of a rational homology sphere equipped with a spin structure and is analogous to Stoffregen’s connected Seiberg–Witten Floer homology. We use this invariant to study the structure of the homology cobordism group and, along the way, compute the involutive correction terms $\bar{d}$ and $\text{}\underline{d}$ for certain families of three-manifolds.

It is well known that a finitely generated group ${\rm\Gamma}$ has Kazhdan’s property (T) if and only if the Laplacian element ${\rm\Delta}$ in $\mathbb{R}[{\rm\Gamma}]$ has a spectral gap. In this paper, we prove that this phenomenon is witnessed in $\mathbb{R}[{\rm\Gamma}]$. Namely, ${\rm\Gamma}$ has property (T) if and only if there exist a constant ${\it\kappa}>0$ and a finite sequence ${\it\xi}_{1},\ldots ,{\it\xi}_{n}$ in $\mathbb{R}[{\rm\Gamma}]$ such that ${\rm\Delta}^{2}-{\it\kappa}{\rm\Delta}=\sum _{i}{\it\xi}_{i}^{\ast }{\it\xi}_{i}$. This result suggests the possibility of finding new examples of property (T) groups by solving equations in $\mathbb{R}[{\rm\Gamma}]$, possibly with the assistance of computers.

We study the classical limit of a family of irreducible representations of the quantum affine algebra associated to $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$. After a suitable twist, the limit is a module for $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}[t]$, i.e., for the maximal standard parabolic subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra. Our first result is about the family of prime representations introduced in Hernandez and Leclerc (Duke Math. J.154 (2010), 265–341; Symmetries, Integrable Systems and Representations, Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statitics, Volume 40, pp. 175–193 (2013)), in the context of a monoidal categorification of cluster algebras. We show that these representations specialize (after twisting) to $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}[t]$-stable prime Demazure modules in level-two integrable highest-weight representations of the classical affine Lie algebra. It was proved in Chari et al. (arXiv:1408.4090) that a stable Demazure module is isomorphic to the fusion product of stable prime Demazure modules. Our next result proves that such a fusion product is the limit of the tensor product of the corresponding irreducible prime representations of quantum affine $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$.

Let $X$ be a normal complex projective variety, $T\subseteq X$ a subvariety of dimension $m$ (possibly $T=X$) and $a:X\rightarrow A$ a morphism to an abelian variety such that $\text{Pic}^{0}(A)$ injects into $\text{Pic}^{0}(T)$; let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \text{Pic}^{0}(A)$ a general element.

We introduce two new ingredients for the study of linear systems on $X$. First of all, we show the existence of a factorization of the map $a$, called the eventual map of $L$ on $T$, which controls the behavior of the linear systems $|L\otimes \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}|_{|T}$, asymptotically with respect to the pullbacks to the connected étale covers $X^{(d)}\rightarrow X$ induced by the $d$-th multiplication map of $A$.

Second, we define the so-called continuous rank function$x\mapsto h_{a}^{0}(X_{|T},L+xM)$, where $M$ is the pullback of an ample divisor of $A$. This function extends to a continuous function of $x\in \mathbb{R}$, which is differentiable except possibly at countably many points; when $X=T$ we compute the left derivative explicitly.

As an application, we give quick short proofs of a wide range of new Clifford–Severi inequalities, i.e., geographical bounds of the form

Nous démontrons une nouvelle minoration de la hauteur normalisée d’une sous-variété algébrique d’un tore multiplicatif (et par conséquent des petits points d’une telle sous-variété). Si dans le cas torique, une preuve effective de la conjecture de Bogomolov généralisée était déjà connue ainsi que des estimations “pluri-exponentielles” en le degré de la variété (Schmidt et Bombieri–Zannier), puis monomiales inverses (par le deuxième auteur et Philippon), notre approche qui est entièrement nouvelle, permet de démontrer à un $\varepsilon$-près les conjectures les plus précises (en fonction du degré) que l’on peut formuler dans ce cadre. On obtient ainsi pour ce problème l’exact analogue de ce que l’on sait obtenir dans le cadre du problème de Lehmer. Enfin, nous démontrons pour les sous-variétés de codimension au moins 2 une conjecture du deuxième auteur et Philippon.

We study product theorems for matrix spaces. In particular, we prove the following theorems.

Theorem 1. For all $\varepsilon>0$, there is $\delta>0$ such that if $A\subset\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ is a finite set, then either $A$ intersects a coset of a nilpotent subgroup in a set of size at least $|A|^{1-\varepsilon}$, or $|A^3|>|A|^{1+\delta}$.

Theorem 2. Let $A$ be a finite subset of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. Then either $A$ is contained in a virtually abelian subgroup, or $|A^3|>c|A|^{1+\delta}$ for some absolute constant $\delta>0$.

Here $A^3=\{a_1a_2a_3:a_i\in A,\ i=1,2,3\}$ is the $3$-fold product set of $A$.

We show that transcendental elements of the Brauer group of an algebraic surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We construct a general $K 3$ surface $X$ of degree $2$ over $ \mathbb{Q} $, together with a 2-torsion Brauer class $\alpha $ that is unramified at every finite prime, but ramifies at real points of $X$. With motivation from Hodge theory, the pair $(X, \alpha )$ is constructed from a double cover of ${ \mathbb{P} }^{2} \times { \mathbb{P} }^{2} $ ramified over a hypersurface of bidegree $(2, 2)$.

The Main Conjecture of Iwasawa theory for an elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ was studied in \cite{bertolini_darmon}, in the case where $p$ is a prime of ordinary reduction for $E$. Analogous results are formulated, and proved, in the case where $p$ is a prime of supersingular reduction. The foundational study of supersingular main conjectures carried out by Perrin-Riou, Pollack, Kurihara, Kobayashi and Iovita and Pollack are required to handle this case in which many of the simplifying features of the ordinary setting break down.
