This paper studies ‘pro-excision’ for the $K$-theory of one-dimensional, usually semi-local, rings and its various applications. In particular, we prove Geller’s conjecture for equal characteristic rings over a perfect field of finite characteristic, give results towards Geller’s conjecture in mixed characteristic, and we establish various finiteness results for the $K$-groups of singularities, covering both orders in number fields and singular curves over finite fields.

In this article we study physical measures for $\operatorname {C}^{1+\alpha }$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with a mostly expanding center. We show that every diffeomorphism with a mostly expanding center direction exhibits a geometrical-combinatorial structure, which we call skeleton, that determines the number, basins and supports of the physical measures. Furthermore, the skeleton allows us to describe how physical measures bifurcate as the diffeomorphism changes under $C^1$ topology.

Moreover, for each diffeomorphism with a mostly expanding center, there exists a $C^1$ neighbourhood, such that diffeomorphism among a $C^1$ residual subset of this neighbourhood admits finitely many physical measures, whose basins have full volume.

We also show that the physical measures for diffeomorphisms with a mostly expanding center satisfy exponential decay of correlation for any Hölder observes. In particular, we prove that every $C^2$ , partially hyperbolic, accessible diffeomorphism with 1-dimensional center and nonvanishing center exponent has exponential decay of correlations for Hölder functions.

We solve the inverse differential Galois problem over differential fields with a large field of constants of infinite transcendence degree over $\mathbb{Q}$. More generally, we show that over such a field, every split differential embedding problem can be solved. In particular, we solve the inverse differential Galois problem and all split differential embedding problems over $\mathbb{Q}_{p}(x)$.

For a perfect field k, we use the techniques of Bondal-Kapranov and Hanamura to construct a tensor triangulated category of mixed motives over the truncated polynomial ring k[t]/(tm+1). The extension groups in this category are given by Bloch's higher Chow groups and the additive higher Chow groups. The main new ingredient is the moving lemma for additive higher Chow groups by the authors and its refinements.

We define the Atiyah class for global matrix factorisations and use it to give a formula for the categorical Chern character and the boundary-bulk map for matrix factorisations, generalising the formula in the local case obtained in [12]. Our approach is based on developing the Lie algebra analogies observed by Kapranov [7] and Markarian [9].

Let $A$ be the product of an abelian variety and a torus defined over a number field $K$. Fix some prime number $\ell$. If $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in A(K)$ is a point of infinite order, we consider the set of primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ such that the reduction $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\hspace{0.2em}{\rm mod}\hspace{0.2em}\mathfrak{p})$ is well-defined and has order coprime to $\ell$. This set admits a natural density. By refining the method of Jones and Rouse [Galois theory of iterated endomorphisms, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)100(3) (2010), 763–794. Appendix A by Jeffrey D. Achter], we can express the density as an $\ell$-adic integral without requiring any assumption. We also prove that the density is always a rational number whose denominator (up to powers of $\ell$) is uniformly bounded in a very strong sense. For elliptic curves, we describe a strategy for computing the density which covers every possible case.

In this paper, we introduce variants of formal nearby cycles for a locally noetherian formal scheme over a complete discrete valuation ring. If the formal scheme is locally algebraizable, then our nearby cycle gives a generalization of Berkovich’s formal nearby cycle. Our construction is entirely scheme theoretic, and does not require rigid geometry. Our theory is intended for applications to the local study of the cohomology of Rapoport–Zink spaces.

Let $F$ be a totally real field, and $v$ a place of $F$ dividing an odd prime $p$. We study the weight part of Serre’s conjecture for continuous totally odd representations $\overline{{\it\rho}}:G_{F}\rightarrow \text{GL}_{2}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{p})$ that are reducible locally at $v$. Let $W$ be the set of predicted Serre weights for the semisimplification of $\overline{{\it\rho}}|_{G_{F_{v}}}$. We prove that, when $\overline{{\it\rho}}|_{G_{F_{v}}}$ is generic, the Serre weights in $W$ for which $\overline{{\it\rho}}$ is modular are exactly the ones that are predicted (assuming that $\overline{{\it\rho}}$ is modular). We also determine precisely which subsets of $W$ arise as predicted weights when $\overline{{\it\rho}}|_{G_{F_{v}}}$ varies with fixed generic semisimplification.

We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points of bounded height in the zero-loci of Brauer group elements on semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. We obtain asymptotic formulae for the counting problem for wonderful compactifications using the spectral theory of automorphic forms. Applications include asymptotic formulae for the number of matrices over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose determinant is a sum of two squares. These results provide a positive answer to some cases of a question of Serre concerning such counting problems.

Given a Galois extension $L/K$ of number fields, we describe fine distribution properties of Frobenius elements via invariants from representations of finite Galois groups and ramification theory. We exhibit explicit families of extensions in which we evaluate these invariants and deduce a detailed understanding and a precise description of the possible asymmetries. We establish a general bound on the generic fluctuations of the error term in the Chebotarev density theorem, which under GRH is sharper than the Murty–Murty–Saradha and Bellaïche refinements of the Lagarias–Odlyzko and Serre bounds, and which we believe is best possible (assuming simplicity, it is of the quality of Montgomery’s conjecture on primes in arithmetic progressions). Under GRH and a hypothesis on the multiplicities of zeros up to a certain height, we show that in certain families, these fluctuations are dominated by a constant lower order term. As an application of our ideas, we refine and generalize results of K. Murty and of Bellaïche, and we answer a question of Ng. In particular, in the case where $L/{\mathbb {Q}}$ is Galois and supersolvable, we prove a strong form of a conjecture of K. Murty on the unramified prime ideal of least norm in a given Frobenius set. The tools we use include the Rubinstein–Sarnak machinery based on limiting distributions and a blend of algebraic, analytic, representation theoretic, probabilistic and combinatorial techniques.

The arithmetic is interpreted in all the groups of Richard Thompson and Graham Higman, as well as in other groups of piecewise affine permutations of an interval which generalize the groups of Thompson and Higman. In particular, the elementary theories of all these groups are undecidable. Moreover, Thompson's group F and some of its generalizations interpret the arithmetic without parameters.

We show that the restriction to square-free numbers of the representation function attached to a norm form does not correlate with nilsequences. By combining this result with previous work of Browning and the author, we obtain an application that is used in recent work of Harpaz and Wittenberg on the fibration method for rational points.

Harish-Chandra induction and restriction functors play a key role in the representation theory of reductive groups over finite fields. In this paper, extending earlier work of Dat, we introduce and study generalisations of these functors which apply to a wide range of finite and profinite groups, typical examples being compact open subgroups of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields. We prove that these generalisations are compatible with two of the tools commonly used to study the (smooth, complex) representations of such groups, namely Clifford theory and the orbit method. As a test case, we examine in detail the induction and restriction of representations from and to the Siegel Levi subgroup of the symplectic group $\text{Sp}_{4}$ over a finite local principal ideal ring of length two. We obtain in this case a Mackey-type formula for the composition of these induction and restriction functors which is a perfect analogue of the well-known formula for the composition of Harish-Chandra functors. In a different direction, we study representations of the Iwahori subgroup $I_{n}$ of $\text{GL}_{n}(F)$, where $F$ is a non-archimedean local field. We establish a bijection between the set of irreducible representations of $I_{n}$ and tuples of primitive irreducible representations of smaller Iwahori subgroups, where primitivity is defined by the vanishing of suitable restriction functors.

Given a separably closed field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$ and finite degree of imperfection, we study the $\sharp$ functor which takes a semiabelian variety $G$ over $K$ to the maximal divisible subgroup of $G(K)$. Our main result is an example where $G^{\sharp }$, as a ‘type-definable group’ in $K$, does not have ‘relative Morley rank’, yielding a counterexample to a claim in Hrushovski [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 9 (1996), 667–690]. Our methods involve studying the question of the preservation of exact sequences by the $\sharp$ functor, and relating this to issues of descent as well as model-theoretic properties of $G^{\sharp }$. We mention some characteristic 0 analogues of these ‘exactness-descent’ results, where differential algebraic methods are more prominent. We also develop the notion of an iterative D-structure on a group scheme over an iterative Hasse field, which is interesting in its own right, as well as providing a uniform treatment of the characteristic 0 and characteristic $p$ cases of ‘exactness descent’.

We investigate qualitative properties of the underlying scheme of Rapoport–Zink formal moduli spaces of p-divisible groups (resp., shtukas). We single out those cases where the dimension of this underlying scheme is zero (resp., those where the dimension is the maximal possible). The model case for the first alternative is the Lubin–Tate moduli space, and the model case for the second alternative is the Drinfeld moduli space. We exhibit a complete list in both cases.

The flow past an obstacle is a fundamental object in fluid mechanics. In 1967 Finn and Smith proved the unique existence of stationary solutions, called the physically reasonable solutions, to the Navier–Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain modeling this type of flows when the Reynolds number is sufficiently small. The asymptotic behavior of their solution at spatial infinity has been studied in detail and well understood by now, while its stability has remained open due to the difficulty specific to the two-dimensionality. In this paper, we prove that the physically reasonable solutions constructed by Finn and Smith are asymptotically stable with respect to small and well-localized initial perturbations.

We extend the $p$-adic Gross–Zagier formula of Bertolini et al. [Generalized Heegner cycles and $p$-adic Rankin $L$-series, Duke Math. J.162(6) (2013), 1033–1148] to the semistable non-crystalline setting, and combine it with our previous work [Castella, On the $p$-adic variation of Heegner points, Preprint, 2014, arXiv:1410.6591] to obtain a derivative formula for the specializations of Howard’s big Heegner points [Howard, Variation of Heegner points in Hida families, Invent. Math.167(1) (2007), 91–128] at exceptional primes in the Hida family.

It is proved that solutions of the complex Monge–Ampère equation on compact Kähler manifolds with right hand side in Lp, p > 1, are uniformly Hölder continuous under the assumption on non-negative orthogonal bisectional curvature.
