The minimal ramification problem may be considered as a quantitative version of the inverse Galois problem. For a nontrivial finite group $G$, let $m(G)$ be the minimal integer $m$ for which there exists a $G$-Galois extension $N/\mathbb{Q}$ that is ramified at exactly $m$ primes (including the infinite one). So, the problem is to compute or to bound $m(G)$.

In this paper, we bound the ramification of extensions $N/\mathbb{Q}$ obtained as a specialization of a branched covering $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}:C\rightarrow \mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{Q}}^{1}$. This leads to novel upper bounds on $m(G)$, for finite groups $G$ that are realizable as the Galois group of a branched covering. Some instances of our general results are:

Our methods are based on sieve theory results, in particular on the Green–Tao–Ziegler theorem on prime values of linear forms in two variables, on the theory of specialization in arithmetic geometry, and on finite group theory.

Let X be the variety obtained by the Weil transfer with respect to a quadratic separable field extension of a generalized Severi–Brauer variety. We study (and, in some cases, determine) the canonical dimension, incompressibility, and motivic indecomposability of X. We determine the canonical 2-dimension of X (in the general case).

We define (iterated) coisotropic correspondences between derived Poisson stacks, and construct symmetric monoidal higher categories of derived Poisson stacks, where the $i$-morphisms are given by $i$-fold coisotropic correspondences. Assuming an expected equivalence of different models of higher Morita categories, we prove that all derived Poisson stacks are fully dualizable and so determine framed extended TQFTs by the Cobordism Hypothesis. Along the way, we also prove that the higher Morita category of $E_{n}$-algebras with respect to coproducts is equivalent to the higher category of iterated cospans.

We establish an infinitesimal version of the Jacquet-Rallis trace formula for general linear groups. Our formula is obtained by integrating a kernel truncated à la Arthur multiplied by the absolute value of the determinant to the power $s\in \mathbb{C}$. It has a geometric side which is a sum of distributions $I_{\mathfrak{o}}(s,\cdot )$ indexed by the invariants of the adjoint action of $\text{GL}_{n}(\text{F})$ on $\mathfrak{gl}_{n+1}(\text{F})$ as well as a «spectral side» consisting of the Fourier transforms of the aforementioned distributions. We prove that the distributions $I_{\mathfrak{o}}(s,\cdot )$ are invariant and depend only on the choice of the Haar measure on $\text{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{A})$. For regular semi-simple classes $\mathfrak{o}$, $I_{\mathfrak{o}}(s,\cdot )$ is a relative orbital integral of Jacquet-Rallis. For classes $\mathfrak{o}$ called relatively regular semi-simple, we express $I_{\mathfrak{o}}(s,\cdot )$ in terms of relative orbital integrals regularised by means of zeta functions.

A theorem of Kuyk says that every Abelian extension of a Hilbertian field is Hilbertian. We conjecture that for an Abelian variety A defined over a Hilbertian field K every extension L of K in K(Ator) is Hilbertian. We prove our conjecture when K is a number field. The proof applies a result of Serre about l-torsion of Abelian varieties, information about l-adic analytic groups, and Haran's diamond theorem.

We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $\operatorname{NA}(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read [Banach spaces with no proximinal subspaces of codimension 2, Israel J. Math. (to appear)] and Rmoutil [Norm-attaining functionals need not contain 2-dimensional subspaces, J. Funct. Anal. 272 (2017), 918–928]. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $\operatorname{NA}(X)$ for the original norm is not “too large”. The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_{0}$ and having a countable system of norming functionals, in particular, to separable Banach spaces containing $c_{0}$. We also provide some geometric properties of the norms we have constructed.

We propose a conjectural list of Fano manifolds of Picard number $1$ with pseudoeffective normalised tangent bundles, which we prove in various situations by relating it to the complete divisibility conjecture of Francesco Russo and Fyodor L. Zak on varieties with small codegree. Furthermore, the pseudoeffective thresholds and, hence, the pseudoeffective cones of the projectivised tangent bundles of rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number $1$ are explicitly determined by studying the total dual variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRTs) and the geometry of stratified Mukai flops. As a by-product, we obtain sharp vanishing theorems on the global twisted symmetric holomorphic vector fields on rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number $1$.

We establish that the existence of a winning strategy in certain topological games, closely related to a strong game of Choquet, played in a topological space $X$ and its hyperspace $K(X)$ of all nonempty compact subsets of $X$ equipped with the Vietoris topology, is equivalent for one of the players. For a separable metrizable space $X$, we identify a game-theoretic condition equivalent to $K(X)$ being hereditarily Baire. It implies quite easily a recent result of Gartside, Medini and Zdomskyy that characterizes hereditary Baire property of hyperspaces $K(X)$ over separable metrizable spaces $X$ via the Menger property of the remainder of a compactification of $X$. Subsequently, we use topological games to study hereditary Baire property in spaces of probability measures and in hyperspaces over filters on natural numbers. To this end, we introduce a notion of strong $P$-filter ${\mathcal{F}}$ and prove that it is equivalent to $K({\mathcal{F}})$ being hereditarily Baire. We also show that if $X$ is separable metrizable and $K(X)$ is hereditarily Baire, then the space $P_{r}(X)$ of Borel probability Radon measures on $X$ is hereditarily Baire too. It follows that there exists (in ZFC) a separable metrizable space $X$, which is not completely metrizable with $P_{r}(X)$ hereditarily Baire. As far as we know, this is the first example of this kind.

We establish the following results on higher order ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiability, $1<p<\infty$, of the operator function arising from a continuous scalar function $f$ and self-adjoint operators defined on a fixed separable Hilbert space:

1. (i) $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every bounded self-adjoint operator if and only if $f\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R})$;

2. (ii) if $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n-1)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$ and $f^{(n)}\in C_{0}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every self-adjoint operator;

3. (iii) if $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n-1$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable and $n$ times Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiable at every self-adjoint operator.

We also prove that if $f\in B_{\infty 1}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\cap B_{\infty 1}^{1}(\mathbb{R})$, then $f$ is $n$ times continuously Fréchet ${\mathcal{S}}^{q}$-differentiable, $1\leqslant q<\infty$, at every self-adjoint operator. These results generalize and extend analogous results of Kissin et al. (Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3)108(3) (2014), 327–349) to arbitrary $n$ and unbounded operators as well as substantially extend the results of Azamov et al. (Canad. J. Math.61(2) (2009), 241–263); Coine et al. (J. Funct. Anal.; doi:10.1016/j.jfa.2018.09.005); Peller (J. Funct. Anal.233(2) (2006), 515–544) on higher order ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-differentiability of $f$ in a certain Wiener class, Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{2}$-differentiability of $f\in C^{n}(\mathbb{R})$ with $f^{\prime },\ldots ,f^{(n)}\in C_{b}(\mathbb{R})$, and Gâteaux ${\mathcal{S}}^{q}$-differentiability of $f$ in the intersection of the Besov classes $B_{\infty 1}^{n}(\mathbb{R})\cap B_{\infty 1}^{1}(\mathbb{R})$. As an application, we extend ${\mathcal{S}}^{p}$-estimates for operator Taylor remainders to a broad set of symbols. Finally, we establish explicit formulas for Fréchet differentials and Gâteaux derivatives.

Let be a lattice in the real simple Lie group L. If L is of rank at least 2 (respectively locally isomorphic to Sp(n, 1)) any unbounded morphism ρ : Γ → G into a simple real Lie group G essentially extends to a Lie morphism ρL : L → G (Margulis's superrigidity theorem, respectively Corlette's theorem). In particular any such morphism is infinitesimally, thus locally, rigid. On the other hand, for L = SU(n, 1) even morphisms of the form are not infinitesimally rigid in general. Almost nothing is known about their local rigidity. In this paper we prove that any cocompact lattice Γ in SU(n, 1) is essentially locally rigid (while in general not infinitesimally rigid) in the quaternionic groups Sp(n, 1), SU(2n, 2) or SO(4n, 4) (for the natural sequence of embeddings SU(n, 1) ⊂ Sp(n, 1) ⊂ SU(2n, 2) ⊂ SO(4n, 4)).

The aim of this paper is to show that rigid syntomic cohomology – defined by Besser – is representable by a rational ring spectrum in the motivic homotopical sense. In fact, extending previous constructions, we exhibit a simple representability criterion and we apply it to several cohomologies in order to get our central result. This theorem gives new results for rigid syntomic cohomology such as h-descent and the compatibility of cycle classes with Gysin morphisms. Along the way, we prove that motivic ring spectra induce a complete Bloch–Ogus cohomological formalism and even more. Finally, following a general motivic homotopical philosophy, we exhibit a natural notion of rigid syntomic coefficients.

We prove the existence of a one parameter family of minimal embedded hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, for $n\geq3$, which generalize the well known two-dimensional ‘Riemann minimal surfaces’. The hypersurfaces we obtain are complete, embedded, simply periodic hypersurfaces which have infinitely many parallel hyperplanar ends. By opposition with the two-dimensional case, they are not foliated by spheres.

Résumé Nous prouvons l’existence d’une famille à un paramètre d’hypersurfaces de $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, pour $n\geq 3$, qui sont minimales et qui généralisent les surfaces minimales de Riemann. Les hypersurfaces que nous obtenons sont des hypersurfaces complètes, simplement périodiques et qui ont une infinité de bouts hyperplans parallèles. Contrairement au cas des surfaces, i.e. $n=2$, ces hypersurfaces ne sont pas feuilletées par des sphères.

We study the action of the formal affine Hecke algebra on the formal group algebra, and show that the the formal affine Hecke algebra has a basis indexed by the Weyl group as a module over the formal group algebra. We also define a concept called the normal formal group law, which we use to simplify the relations of the generators of the formal affine Demazure algebra and the formal affine Hecke algebra.

We construct two bounded functional calculi for sectorial operators on Banach spaces, which enhance the functional calculus for analytic Besov functions, by extending the class of functions, generalising and sharpening estimates and adapting the calculus to the angle of sectoriality. The calculi are based on appropriate reproducing formulas, they are compatible with standard functional calculi and they admit appropriate convergence lemmas and spectral mapping theorems. To achieve this, we develop the theory of associated function spaces in ways that are interesting and significant. As consequences of our calculi, we derive several well-known operator norm estimates and provide generalisations of some of them.

We construct some cusped finite-volume hyperbolic n-manifolds $M^n$ that fibre algebraically in all the dimensions $5\leq n \leq 8$. That is, there is a surjective homomorphism $\pi _1(M^n) \to {\mathbb {Z}}$ with finitely generated kernel. The kernel is also finitely presented in the dimensions $n=7, 8$, and this leads to the first examples of hyperbolic n-manifolds $\widetilde M^n$ whose fundamental group is finitely presented but not of finite type. These n-manifolds $\widetilde M^n$ have infinitely many cusps of maximal rank and, hence, infinite Betti number $b_{n-1}$. They cover the finite-volume manifold $M^n$. We obtain these examples by assigning some appropriate colours and states to a family of right-angled hyperbolic polytopes $P^5, \ldots , P^8$, and then applying some arguments of Jankiewicz, Norin and Wise [18] and Bestvina and Brady [7]. We exploit in an essential way the remarkable properties of the Gosset polytopes dual to $P^n$, and the algebra of integral octonions for the crucial dimensions $n=7,8$.

In this note we show that the expected value of the separating systole of a random surface of genus g with respect to Weil–Petersson volume behaves like $2\log g $ as the genus goes to infinity. This is in strong contrast to the behavior of the expected value of the systole which, by results of Mirzakhani and Petri, is independent of genus.

We completely classify the possible extensions between semistable vector bundles on the Fargues–Fontaine curve (over an algebraically closed perfectoid field), in terms of a simple condition on Harder–Narasimhan (HN) polygons. Our arguments rely on a careful study of various moduli spaces of bundle maps, which we define and analyze using Scholze’s language of diamonds. This analysis reduces our main results to a somewhat involved combinatorial problem, which we then solve via a reinterpretation in terms of the Euclidean geometry of HN polygons.

This paper studies two new kinds of affine Springer fibres that are adapted to the root valuation strata of Goresky–Kottwitz–MacPherson. In addition it develops various linear versions of Katz's Hodge–Newton decomposition.

Let $F$ be a unramified finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ and $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ be an irreducible mod $p$ two-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of $F$. The aim of this article is the explicit computation of the Kisin variety parameterizing the Breuil–Kisin modules associated to certain families of potentially Barsotti–Tate deformations of $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$. We prove that this variety is a finite union of products of $\mathbb{P}^{1}$. Moreover, it appears as an explicit closed connected subvariety of $(\mathbb{P}^{1})^{[F:\mathbb{Q}_{p}]}$. We define a stratification of the Kisin variety by locally closed subschemes and explain how the Kisin variety equipped with its stratification may help in determining the ring of Barsotti–Tate deformations of $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$.

Let $T$ be a locally finite tree without vertices of degree $1$. We show that among the closed subgroups of $\text{Aut}(T)$ acting with a bounded number of orbits, the Chabauty-closure of the set of topologically simple groups is the set of groups without proper open subgroup of finite index. Moreover, if all vertices of $T$ have degree ${\geqslant}3$, then the set of isomorphism classes of topologically simple closed subgroups of $\text{Aut}(T)$ acting doubly transitively on $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}T$ carries a natural compact Hausdorff topology inherited from Chabauty. Some of our considerations are valid in the context of automorphism groups of locally finite connected graphs. Applications to Weyl-transitive automorphism groups of buildings are also presented.
