This paper studies two new kinds of affine Springer fibres that are adapted to the root valuation strata of Goresky–Kottwitz–MacPherson. In addition it develops various linear versions of Katz's Hodge–Newton decomposition.

In order to develop the foundations of derived logarithmic geometry, we introduce a model category of logarithmic simplicial rings and a notion of derived log-étale maps, and use them to define derived log stacks.

We improve a previous result about the local energy decay for the damped wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The problem is governed by a Laplacian associated with a long-range perturbation of the flat metric and a short-range absorption index. Our purpose is to recover the decay ${\mathcal{O}}(t^{-d+\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}})$ in the weighted energy spaces. The proof is based on uniform resolvent estimates, given by an improved version of the dissipative Mourre theory. In particular, we have to prove the limiting absorption principle for the powers of the resolvent with inserted weights.

Nous présentons une étude des relations d’équivalence mesurées du point de vue spectral. En particulier nous montrons que pour une relation d’équivalence donnée, la propriété T de Kazhdan, l’ergodicité forte et la moyennabilité peuvent être caractérisées par la présence d’un trou dans le spectre de certaines marches aléatoires sur les orbites de cette relation (à coefficients dans des représentations hilbertiennes appropriées). Les démonstrations reposent de façon essentielle sur l’étude des relations d’équivalence moyennables (Connes–Feldman–Weiss), sur les caractérisations spectrales correspondantes, pour les groupes dénombrables, de la moyennabilité (théorème de Kesten) et de la propriété T de Kazhdan (Gromov, Ghys, etc.), ainsi que sur des résultats techniques sur les représentations unitaires de relations d’équivalence mesurées (en particulier au voisinage de la représentation triviale) que nous développons au cours de l’article. Enfin nous obtenons un analogue du “critère $\lambda_1>1/2$” pour les relations d’équivalence mesurées.

It is a well known theorem due to Kesten that amenability for discrete groups can be characterized in terms of the spectra of diffusion operators associated to random walks on the Cayley graph of these groups. In this paper we are interested in analogous results in the framework of discrete measured equivalence relations. Our main results concern characterizations of Kazhdan’s property T, amenability, and the non existence of amenable quotients (strong ergodicity), in terms of the spectra of diffusion operators associated to random walks and hilbertian representations of the underlying equivalence relation. Our arguments are based on the proof of Connes–Feldman–Weiss’s classification of amenable equivalence relations, the spectral characterizations, in the group case, of amenability (Kesten) and property T (Gromov, Ghys, etc.), as well as new results on the representation theory of measured equivalence relations (in particular in the neighbourhood of the trivial representation) and Kazhdan’s property T. As an application we show how Żuk’s ‘$\lambda_1>1/2$’ criterion for property T can be adapted to measured equivalence relations.

We prove that every separable Banach space containing an isomorphic copy of $\ell _{1}$ can be equivalently renormed so that the new bidual norm is octahedral. This answers, in the separable case, a question in Godefroy [Metric characterization of first Baire class linear forms and octahedral norms, Studia Math. 95 (1989), 1–15]. As a direct consequence, we obtain that every dual Banach space, with a separable predual and failing to be strongly regular, can be equivalently renormed with a dual norm to satisfy the strong diameter two property.

Using degeneration and Schubert calculus, we consider the problem of computing the number of linear series of given degree d and dimension r on a general curve of genus g satisfying prescribed incidence conditions at n points. We determine these numbers completely for linear series of arbitrary dimension when d is sufficiently large, and for all d when either $r=1$ or $n=r+2$. Our formulas generalise and give new proofs of recent results of Tevelev and of Cela, Pandharipande and Schmitt.

In this article we introduce the local versions of the Voevodsky category of motives with $\mathbb{F} _p$ -coefficients over a field k, parametrized by finitely generated extensions of k. We introduce the so-called flexible fields, passage to which is conservative on motives. We demonstrate that, over flexible fields, the constructed local motivic categories are much simpler than the global one and more reminiscent of a topological counterpart. This provides handy ‘local’ invariants from which one can read motivic information. We compute the local motivic cohomology of a point for $p=2$ and study the local Chow motivic category. We introduce local Chow groups and conjecture that over flexible fields these should coincide with Chow groups modulo numerical equivalence with $\mathbb{F} _p$ -coefficients, which implies that local Chow motives coincide with numerical Chow motives. We prove this conjecture in various cases.

The formula of the title relates p-adic heights of Heegner points and derivatives of p-adic L-functions. It was originally proved by Perrin-Riou for p-ordinary elliptic curves over the rationals, under the assumption that p splits in the relevant quadratic extension. We remove this assumption, in the more general setting of Hilbert-modular abelian varieties.

In this paper, we consider the Stokes equations in a perforated domain. When the number of holes increases while their radius tends to 0, it is proven in Desvillettes et al. [J. Stat. Phys. 131 (2008) 941–967], under suitable dilution assumptions, that the solution is well approximated asymptotically by solving a Stokes–Brinkman equation. We provide here quantitative estimates in $L^{p}$-norms of this convergence.

Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. Let $\overline{r}:G_{F}\rightarrow \text{GL}_{2}(\overline{\mathbf{F}}_{p})$ be a modular Galois representation that satisfies the Taylor–Wiles hypotheses and is tamely ramified and generic at a place $v$ above $p$. Let $\mathfrak{m}$ be the corresponding Hecke eigensystem. We describe the $\mathfrak{m}$-torsion in the $\text{mod}\,p$ cohomology of Shimura curves with full congruence level at $v$ as a $\text{GL}_{2}(k_{v})$-representation. In particular, it only depends on $\overline{r}|_{I_{F_{v}}}$ and its Jordan–Hölder factors appear with multiplicity one. The main ingredients are a description of the submodule structure for generic $\text{GL}_{2}(\mathbf{F}_{q})$-projective envelopes and the multiplicity one results of Emerton, Gee and Savitt [Lattices in the cohomology of Shimura curves, Invent. Math. 200(1) (2015), 1–96].

Nous proposons une façon simple de compter le nombre de $G$-chtoucas de Drinfeld avec modifications arbitraires, inspirée par les travaux de Kottwitz sur les variétés de Shimura.

We propose a simple method to count the number of Drinfeld $G$-shtukas with arbitrary modifications which is inspired by works by Kottwitz on Shimura varieties.

For $G = \mathrm {GL}_2, \mathrm {SL}_2, \mathrm {PGL}_2$ we compute the intersection E-polynomials and the intersection Poincaré polynomials of the G-character variety of a compact Riemann surface C and of the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles on C of degree zero. We derive several results concerning the P=W conjectures for these singular moduli spaces.

Nous démontrons des théorèmes d'immersion holomorphe dans un espace projectif complexe pour des variétés kählériennes non compactes et des laminations par variétés complexes qui admettent un fibré en droites holomorphe strictement positif. En particulier, nous montrons que sur une lamination compacte par surfaces de Riemann, les fonctions méromorphes séparent les points si et seulement si aucun cycle feuilleté n'est homologue à $0$.

We prove holomorphic immersion theorems in a finite dimensional complex projective space for kählerian non-compact manifolds and for laminations by complex manifolds that carry a line bundle of positive curvature. In particular, we prove that on a Riemann surfaces lamination of a compact space, the space of meromorphic functions separates points if and only if every foliation cycle is non homologous to $0$.

Let C be a proper smooth geometrically connected hyperbolic curve over a field of characteristic 0 and ℓ a prime number. We prove the injectivity of the homomorphism from the pro-ℓ mapping class group attached to the two dimensional configuration space of C to the one attached to C, induced by the natural projection. We also prove a certain graded Lie algebra version of this injectivity. Consequently, we show that the kernel of the outer Galois representation on the pro-ℓ pure braid group on C with n strings does not depend on n, even if n = 1. This extends a previous result by Ihara–Kaneko. By applying these results to the universal family over the moduli space of curves, we solve completely Oda's problem on the independency of certain towers of (infinite) algebraic number fields, which has been studied by Ihara, Matsumoto, Nakamura, Ueno and the author. Sequentially we obtain certain information of the image of this Galois representation and get obstructions to the surjectivity of the Johnson–Morita homomorphism at each sufficiently large even degree (as Oda predicts), for the first time for a proper curve.

It has long been known that a number of periodic completely integrable systems are associated to hyperelliptic curves, for which the Abel map linearizes the flow (at least in part). We show that this is true for a relatively recent such system: the periodic discrete reduction of the shallow water equation derived by Camassa and Holm. The associated spectral problem has the same form and evolves in the same way as the spectral problem for a family of finite-dimensional non-periodic Hamiltonian flows introduced by Calogero and Françoise. We adapt the Weyl function method used earlier by us to solve the peakon problem to give an explicit solution to both the periodic discrete Camassa–Holm system and the (non-periodic) Calogero–Françoise system in terms of theta functions.

We address the question of determining which mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces admit nonelementary continuous actions on hyperbolic spaces.

More precisely, let $\Sigma $ be a connected, orientable surface of infinite type with tame endspace whose mapping class group is generated by a coarsely bounded subset. We prove that ${\mathrm {Map}}(\Sigma )$ admits a continuous nonelementary action on a hyperbolic space if and only if $\Sigma $ contains a finite-type subsurface which intersects all its homeomorphic translates.

When $\Sigma $ contains such a nondisplaceable subsurface K of finite type, the hyperbolic space we build is constructed from the curve graphs of K and its homeomorphic translates via a construction of Bestvina, Bromberg and Fujiwara. Our construction has several applications: first, the second bounded cohomology of ${\mathrm {Map}}(\Sigma )$ contains an embedded $\ell ^1$ ; second, using work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin, we deduce that ${\mathrm {Map}} (\Sigma )$ contains nontrivial normal free subgroups (while it does not if $\Sigma $ has no nondisplaceable subsurface of finite type), has uncountably many quotients and is SQ-universal.

This paper contains two results on Hodge loci in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. The first concerns fibrations over curves with a non-trivial flat part in the Fujita decomposition. If local Torelli theorem holds for the fibers and the fibration is non-trivial, an appropriate exterior power of the cohomology of the fiber admits a Hodge substructure. In the case of curves it follows that the moduli image of the fiber is contained in a proper Hodge locus. The second result deals with divisors in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$. It is proved that the image under the period map of a divisor in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ is not contained in a proper totally geodesic subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_{g}$. It follows that a Hodge locus in $\mathsf{M}_{g}$ has codimension at least 2.

We describe a probability distribution on isomorphism classes of principally quasi-polarized $p$-divisible groups over a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p$ which can reasonably be thought of as a ‘uniform distribution’, and we compute the distribution of various statistics ($p$-corank, $a$-number, etc.) of $p$-divisible groups drawn from this distribution. It is then natural to ask to what extent the $p$-divisible groups attached to a randomly chosen hyperelliptic curve (respectively, curve; respectively, abelian variety) over $k$ are uniformly distributed in this sense. This heuristic is analogous to conjectures of Cohen–Lenstra type for $\text{char~} k\not = p$, in which case the random $p$-divisible group is defined by a random matrix recording the action of Frobenius. Extensive numerical investigation reveals some cases of agreement with the heuristic and some interesting discrepancies. For example, plane curves over ${\mathbf{F} }_{3} $ appear substantially less likely to be ordinary than hyperelliptic curves over ${\mathbf{F} }_{3} $.

We construct a weak Hilbert space that is a twisted Hilbert space.

In this paper, we prove a decomposition result for the Chow groups of projectivizations of coherent sheaves of homological dimension $\le 1$ . In this process, we establish the decomposition of Chow groups for the cases of the Cayley trick and standard flips. Moreover, we apply these results to study the Chow groups of symmetric powers of curves, nested Hilbert schemes of surfaces, and the varieties resolving Voisin maps for cubic fourfolds.
