Investigations of closure operators on an involution poset T lead to a certain type of closure operators (so called c-closure operators) that are closely related to projections on T.

In this paper sufficient conditions have been obtained for non-oscillation of non-homogeneous canonical linear differential equations of third order. Some of these results have been extended to non-linear equations.

We present a complete list of groups $G$ and fields $F$ for which: (i) the group of normalized units $V(FG)$ of the group algebra $FG$ is locally nilpotent; (ii) the set of nontrivial nilpotent elements of $FG$ is finite and nonempty, and $V(FG)$ is an Engel group.

A Heron triangle is a triangle that has three rational sides $(a,b,c)$ and a rational area, whereas a perfect triangle is a Heron triangle that has three rational medians $(k,l,m)$. Finding a perfect triangle was stated as an open problem by Richard Guy [Unsolved Problems in Number Theory (Springer, New York, 1981)]. Heron triangles with two rational medians are parametrized by the eight curves $C_{1},\ldots ,C_{8}$ mentioned in Buchholz and Rathbun [‘An infinite set of heron triangles with two rational medians’, Amer. Math. Monthly 104(2) (1997), 106–115; ‘Heron triangles and elliptic curves’, Bull. Aust. Math.Soc. 58 (1998), 411–421] and Bácskái et al. [Symmetries of triangles with two rational medians, http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.65.6533, 2003]. In this paper, we reveal results on the curve $C_{4}$ which has the property of satisfying conditions such that six of seven parameters given by three sides, two medians and area are rational. Our aim is to perform an extensive search to prove the nonexistence of a perfect triangle arising from this curve.

We study an important subclass of quasicircles, namely, symmetric quasicircles. Several characterizations for quasicircles, such as the reverse triangle inequality, the M -condition and the quasiconformal extension property, have been extended to symmetric quasicircles by Becker and Pommerenke and by Gardiner and Sullivan. In this paper we establish several relations among various domain constants such as quasiextremal distance constants, (local) reflection constants and (local) extension constants for this class. We also give several characterizations for symmetric quasicircles such as the strong quadrilateral inequality and the strong extremal distance property. They correspond to the quadrilateral inequality and the extremal distance property for quasicircles.

Let R be a commutative ring with an automorphism ∞ of finite order n. An element f of the skew polynomial ring R[x, α] is nilpotent if and only if all coefficients of fn are nilpotent. (The case n = 1 is the well-known description of the nilpotent elements of the ordinary polynomial ring R[x].) A characterization of the units in R[x, α] is also given.

Let A be a C*-algebra, and let X be a Banach A-bimodule. Johnson [B. E. Johnson, ‘Local derivations on C*-algebras are derivations’, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 353 (2000), 313–325] showed that local derivations from A into X are derivations. We extend this concept of locality to the higher cohomology of a C*-algebra and show that, for every , bounded local n-cocycles from A(n) into X are n-cocycles.

We derive the spectrum of the Laplace–Beltrami operator on the quotient orbifold of the nonhyperbolic triangle groups.

The integration of vector (and operator) valued functions with respect to vector (and operator) valued measures can be simplified by assuming that the measures involved take values in the positive elements of a Banach lattice.

In this paper we provide examples and counterexamples of symmetric ideals of multilinear mappings between Banach spaces and prove that if I1, …, In are operator ideals, then the ideals of multilinear mappings L(I1, …, In) and /I1, …, In/ are symmetric if and only if I1 = … = In.

Iseki and Kasahara (see [3]) have given a Hahn-Banach type theorem for semifield-valued linear functionals on real linear spaces. We shall generalize their result by considering linear spaces over semifields.

Consider the quasi-variety generated by a finite algebra and assume that yields a natural duality on based on which is optimal modulo endomorphisms. We shoe that, provided satisfies certain minimality conditions, we can transfer this duality to a natural duality on based on , which is also optimal modulo endormorphisms, for any finite algebra in that has a subalgebra isomorphic to .

It is known that various cases of the steady isentropic irrotational motion of a compressible fluid are expressible as variational principle [1], [5]. in particular, the aerofoil problem i.e. the case of plane flow in which a uniform stream is locally deflected, without circulation, by a bounded obstacle, can be expressed in such a form. Thus we make stationary where the region R is that bounded internally by the obstacle (C0) and externally by a circle (CR) of radius R. In this expression φ∞ is the velocity potential for a uniform stream, and φ0 is the velocity potential for the corresponding incompressible flow.

A.McIntosh and A. Pryde introduced and gave some applications of notion of “spectral set”, γ(T), associated with each finite, commuting family of continuous linear operators T in a Banach space. Unlike most concepts of joint spectrum, the set γ(T) is part of real Euclidean space. It is shown that γ(T) is always non-empty whenver there are at least two operators in T.

We investigate the effect on the Jones polynomial of a ribbon knot when two of its bands are twisted together. We use our results to prove that each of the three S-equivalence classes of genus 2 fibered doubly slice knots in S3 can be represented by infinitely many distinct prime fibered doubly slice ribbon knots.

Let R be a prime ring, let I be a nonzero ideal of R and let n be a fixed positive integer. We prove that if the characteristic of R is either 0 or a prime p that is greater than 2n, then an additive map d that satisfies d(xn+1)=∑ nj=0xn−jd(x)xj for all x∈I must be a derivation.

We extend an uncertainty principle due to Cowling and Price to threadlike nilpotent Lie groups. This uncertainty principle is a generalization of a classical result due to Hardy. We are thus extending earlier work on Rn and Heisenberg groups.

Every τ-smooth Borel measure is support-concentrated. We shall prove in this note that the converse of this statement is not true, in general. Furthermore, we shall give some conditions assuring that a support-concentrated Borel measure be τ-smooth.
