Let f and g be two permutable transcendental entire functions. Assume that f is a solution of a linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients. We prove that, under some restrictions on the coefficients and the growth of f and g, there exist two non-constant rational functions R1 and R2 such that R1 (f) = R(g). As a corollary, we show that f and g have the same Julia set: J(f) = J(g). As an application, we study a function f which is a combination of exponential functions with polynomial coefficients. This research addresses an open question due to Baker.

Even if in a decomposition of a group the Ai are completely indecomposable, there may be another decomposition with each Cj properly contained in some Ai a proper subgroup of B. The example of Bryce ([1], p. 636) may be modified, at the cost of having one Ai = B, so that I = J and Ci > Ai for all i. It is our object to study this relationship between decompositions of a group.

The Kasparov groups are extended to the setting of inverse limits of G-C*-algebras, where G is assumed to be a locally compact group. The K K-product and other important features of the theory are generalized to this setting.

We introduce the class of p-adic F-functions which contains both the p-adic E-function and p-adic G-functions, as well as other functions. In this paper we obtain lower bounds for polynomials in the values at algebraic points of a class of p-adic F-functions defined over the completion of the algebraic closure of a p-adic field.

We consider ineducible Goppa codes of length qm over Fq defined by polynomials of degree r, where q = pt and p, m, r are distinct primes. The number of such codes, inequivalent under coordinate permutations and field automorphisms, is determined.

In part I, I considered the problem of discovering when, given an irrational α which has a simple continued fraction representation with convergents pn/qn, there exists α' for which the denominator sequence for convergents is a subsequence of (qn). It was shown that such an α' exists if the continued fraction representation was “nearly periodic” with odd period. The following is a generalization of the results of part I to semi-regular continued fractions, where the problem seems to fit more naturally.

In this paper, the rings which have a torsion theory τ with associated torsion radical τ such that R/t(R) has a minimal τ-torsionfree cogenerator are studied. When τ is the trivial torsion theory these are precisely the left QF-3 rings. For τ = τL, the Lambek torsion theory, this class of rings is wider but, with an additional hypothesis on τL it is shown that if R has this property with respect to the Lambek torsion theory on both sides, then R is a (left and right) QF-3 ring. The results obtained are applied to get new characterizations of QF-3 rings with the ascending chain condition on left annihilators.

In this note we define a rather pathological connectedness property of Hausdorff spaces which is stronger than ordinary connectedness. We obtain a few basic properties of such spaces and derive a method for constructing them. It turns out that countable Hausdorff spaces having the connectedness property are as easily constructed as uncountable ones. Hence we have still another method for constructing countable connected Hausdorff spaces.

We outline the classification, up to isometry, of all tetrahedra in hyperbolic space with one or more vertices truncated, for which the dihedral angles along the edges formed by the truncations are all π/2, and those remaining are all submultiples of π. We show how to find the volumes of these polyhedra, and find presentations and small generating sets for the orientation-preserving subgroups of their reflection groups.

For particular families of these groups, we find low index torsion free subgroups, and construct associated manifolds and manifolds with boundary. In particular, for each g ≥ 2, we find a sequence of hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary of genus g, which we conjecture to be of least volume among such manifolds.

This note improves two previous results of the second author. They turn out to be special cases of our main theorem which states: A Banach space X has the property that the strong closure of every abstractly σ-complete Boolean algebra of projections in X is Bade complete if and only if X does not contain a copy of the sequence space ℓ∞.

Let G be a compact abelian group with dual Ĝ and let K be a Banach L1 (G)-module. We introduce the notion of character convolution transformation of K which reduces to ordinary Fourier or Fourier-Stieltjes transformation when K is one of the spaces Lp(G), M(G). We show that the question of what maps Ĝ → K extend to multipliers of K is a question of asking for descriptions of the character convolution transforms. In this setting some results of Helson-Edward and Schoenberg-Eberlein find generalizations, as do some classical results, including the inversion formula and the Parseval relation. We then apply these results to transformation groups, obtaining a variant of a theorem of Bochner and an extension of a theorem of Ryan.

Let ψ be a positive function defined near the origin such lim1 →0+ ψ(t) = 0. We consider the operator Tzƒ, defined as the pricipal value of the convolution of function ƒ and a kernel K(t) = eiy(t)t−z /ψ(t)1−z, where z is a complex number, 0 ≤ Re(z) ≤ 1, 0 < t ≤ 1 and γ is a real function. Assuming certain regularity conditions on ψ and γ and certain relations between ψ and γ we show that Tθ is a bounded operator on Lp (R) for 1/p = (1+ θ) /2 and 0 ≤ θ < 1, and T1 is bounded from H1 (R) to L1 (R).

Recently the class of almost-N-continuous functions between topological spaces has been defined. This paper continues the study of such functions, especially from the point of view of changing the topology on the codomain.

Let G be an abelian lattice ordered group (an l-group). If G is, in fact, totally ordered, we say that G is an 0–group. A subgroup and a sublattice of G is an l-subgroup. A subgroup C of G is called convex if 0 ≦ g ≦ c ∈ C and g ∈ G imply g ∈ C, C is an l-ideal if C is a convex l-subgroup of G. If C is an l-ideal of G, then G/C is also an l-group under the canonical ordering inherited from G. If, in fact, G/C is an 0–group, then C is said to be a prime subgroup of G.

Groebner bases for the ideals determining mod $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}2$ cohomology of the real flag manifolds $F(1,1,n)$ and $F(1,2,n)$ are obtained. These are used to compute appropriate Stiefel–Whitney classes in order to establish some new nonembedding and nonimmersion results for the manifolds $F(1,2,n)$.

A direct construction for partially resolvable t-partitions is presented and then used to give a recursive construction for BIBDs (ν, 4, 2). In particular, we construct BIBD(ν, 4, 2) with BIBD(ν, 4, 2) embedded in it whenever ν = 3u + a, a ∈ {1, 4, 7}. This result allows us to give simple proofs for the existence of BIBD(ν, 4, 2) with various additioinal properties.

We consider (finite) groups in which every two-generator subgroup has cyclic commutator subgroup. Among other things, these groups are metabelian modulo their hypercentres, and in the corresponding quotient group all subgroups of the commutator subgroup are normal.
