Using the theory of the Satake diagrams associated with the non-compact simple Lie algebras over the real number field R, we shall construct a family of simple groups over a field K which are called the simple groups associated with the Satake diagrams. The list of these simple groups includes all Chevalley groups and twisted groups, and all simple algebraic groups of adjoint type defined over R if K is the complex number field C (except two types given by Table II′). Furthermore, the simple groups associated with the Satake diagrams of type AIII, BI, DI are identified with the simple groups obtained from the unitary or orthogonal groups of non-zero indices. The quasi-Bruhat decomposition of the “non-split” simple groups associated with the Satake diagrams which are not Chevalley groups or twisted groups will be given in this paper.

In [1]R. G. Douglas proved that if A and B are continuous linear operators on a Hilbert space X, the following three conditions are equivalent:

A near 1-factor of a graph of order 2n ≧ 4 is a subgraph isomorphic to (n − 2) K2 ∪ P3 ∪ K1. Wallis determined, for each r ≥ 3, the order of a smallest r-regular graph of even order without a 1-factor; while for each r ≧ 3, Chartrand, Goldsmith and Schuster determined the order of a smallest r-regular, (r − 2)-edge-connected graph of even order without a 1-factor. These results are extended to graphs without near 1-factors. It is known that every connected, cubic graph with less than six bridges has a near 1-factor. The order of a smallest connected, cubic graph with exactly six bridges and no near 1-factor is determined.

If h is a homomorphism of an N-semigroup onto an N-semigroup S′, then h induces a homomorphism h of the translation semigroup Λ(S) of S into Λ(S′) of S′. We will study the relations between the structures of S, S′ and Λ(S), Λ(S)′, and will introduce the specialized concepts of N-semigroups S. In particular, we will be interested in power-joined steady or endless N-semigroups. Finally, we will consider admissibility of torsion abelian groups, that is, consider what torsion abelian group can be a structure group of a power-joined steady N-semigroup.

Recently, Chen defined an invariant δM of a Riemannian manifold M. Sharp inequalities for this Riemannian invariant were obtained for submanifolds in real, complex and Sasakian space forms, in terms of their mean curvature. In the present paper, we investigate certain C-totally real submanifolds of a Sasakian space form M2m+1(C)satisfying Chen's equality.

Twisted étale groupoid algebras have recently been studied in the algebraic setting by several authors in connection with an abstract theory of Cartan pairs of rings. In this paper we show that extensions of ample groupoids correspond in a precise manner to extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups. In particular, discrete twists over ample groupoids correspond to certain abelian extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups, and we show that they are classified by Lausch’s second cohomology group of an inverse semigroup. The cohomology group structure corresponds to the Baer sum operation on twists.

We also define a novel notion of inverse semigroup crossed product, generalizing skew inverse semigroup rings, and prove that twisted Steinberg algebras of Hausdorff ample groupoids are instances of inverse semigroup crossed products. The cocycle defining the crossed product is the same cocycle that classifies the twist in Lausch cohomology.

In light of the recent work by Maynard and Tao on the Dickson $k$-tuples conjecture, we show that with a small improvement in the known bounds for this conjecture, we would be able to prove that for some fixed $R$, there are infinitely many Carmichael numbers with exactly $R$ factors for some fixed $R$. In fact, we show that there are infinitely many such $R$.

Classical finite association schemes lead to finite-dimensional algebras which are generated by finitely many stochastic matrices. Moreover, there exist associated finite hypergroups. The notion of classical discrete association schemes can be easily extended to the possibly infinite case. Moreover, this notion can be relaxed slightly by using suitably deformed families of stochastic matrices by skipping the integrality conditions. This leads to a larger class of examples which are again associated with discrete hypergroups. In this paper we propose a topological generalization of association schemes by using a locally compact basis space $X$ and a family of Markov-kernels on $X$ indexed by some locally compact space $D$ where the supports of the associated probability measures satisfy some partition property. These objects, called continuous association schemes, will be related to hypergroup structures on $D$. We study some basic results for this notion and present several classes of examples. It turns out that, for a given commutative hypergroup, the existence of a related continuous association scheme implies that the hypergroup has many features of a double coset hypergroup. We, in particular, show that commutative hypergroups, which are associated with commutative continuous association schemes, carry dual positive product formulas for the characters. On the other hand, we prove some rigidity results in particular in the compact case which say that for given spaces $X,D$ there are only a few continuous association schemes.

We study the action of the Hecke operators Un on the set of hypergeometric functions, as well as on formal power series. We show that the spectrum of these operators on the set of hypergeometric functions is the set {na:n∈ℕ,a∈ℤ}, and that the polylogarithms play an important role in the study of the eigenfunctions of the Hecke operators Un on the set of hypergeometric functions. As a corollary of our results on simultaneous eigenfunctions, we also obtain an apparently unrelated result regarding the behavior of completely multiplicative hypergeometric coefficients.

Let Bd(e) denote the Burnside group with d ≥ 2 generators a1,.a2, …, a, and exponent e > 0, i.e., the free group of rank d of the Burnside variety of exponent e. It is known that Bd(e) is infinite for all sufficiently large odd values of e; cf. Novikov and Adyan [3] or Britton [1]. In particular Bd(pk), where p is an odd prime, is infinite for all sufficiently large k. It is not known whether or not Bd(2k) is infinite for all sufficiently large k infiniteness would imply that Bd(n) is infinite for all sufficiently large n, as has been conjectured by Novikov [2].

Suppose that Ф is a topological space equipped with a Hausdorff topology and that T is a continuous function mapping Ф into Ф. We discuss the existence and uniqueness of fixed points of T and the convergence of the Picard sequence of iterates, from the viewpoint of the existence of a homotopy with special properties.

We introduce a new homology theory for infinite graphs in order to generalize some results of Willis and Woodward on translation invariant functionals. We also extend some theorems of Gerl and Gromov.

The series σan is said to be surnmable (N, pn), to sum s, if limn→∞ tn = s. It is said to be absolutely sum.mable (N, pn), or summable |N, pn|, if {tn} ∈BV.

A map f: A→B in category is called monic if fg = fh implies that g = h for all maps g, h: C → A; it is called epic if gf = hf implies that g = h for all maps g, h: B → C. An object A ∈ is called an S-object if every monic map f: A → A is also epic; it is called a Q-object if every epic map f: A → A is also monic. If A is both an S-object and a Q-object then A is called an SQ-object. In the category of sets the SQ-sets are the finite sets. In the category of vector spaces over a field F the SQ-spaces are precisely the finite dimensional spaces. In the light of these simple examples, it seems reasonable to view the SQ-objects of a category as being of ‘finite type’. We shall be chiefly concerned with investigating the SQ-objects in certain subcategories of the category of locally compact abelian groups.

In this final contribution to the investigation of commutator laws in groups, we answer some of the questions left open in the previous two papers. The principal result is the independence of the Jacobi-Witt-Hall type laws from the so-called standard set of laws. The main results of the earlier papers are summarised. An interlude corrects some of the numerous printing errors in the second of our papers.

We prove a new formula for the number of integral points on an elliptic curve over a function field without assuming that the coefficient field is algebraically closed. This is an improvement on the standard results of Hindry-Silverman.

I. Šafarevič [2] proves that for a pro-finite p-group G, the deficiency of G (in the topological sense) equals the negative of d(m(G)). This means that if G is a finite p-group, where d(m(G)) = n, then there exists a group K with deficiency −n, such that G is the maximal p factor of K.

Let (X, B, m) be a measure space and let f(x) be a real-valued or complex-valued measurable function on X. A non-negative measurable function s(x) will be said to dominate f(x) provided |f(x)| ≦ s(x) for almost all x in X. The function s(x) will be said to dominate the sequence {f(x)}n∈N, N = {1, 2,…}, provided it dominates each fn(x) in the sequence. Unless otherwise specified, each integral will be over X with respect to m.

Let L1(ω) be the weighted convolution algebra L1ω(ℝ+) on ℝ+ with weight ω. Grabiner recently proved that, for a nonzero, continuous homomorphism Φ:L1(ω1)→L1(ω2), the unique continuous extension to a homomorphism between the corresponding weighted measure algebras on ℝ+ is also continuous with respect to the weak-star topologies on these algebras. In this paper we investigate whether similar results hold for homomorphisms from L1(ω) into other commutative Banach algebras. In particular, we prove that for the disc algebra every nonzero homomorphism extends uniquely to a continuous homomorphism which is also continuous with respect to the weak-star topologies. Similarly, for a large class of Beurling algebras A+v on (including the algebra of absolutely convergent Taylor series on ) we prove that every nonzero homomorphism Φ:L1(ω)→A+v extends uniquely to a continuous homomorphism which is also continuous with respect to the weak-star topologies.
