In part I, I considered the problem of discovering when, given an irrational α which has a simple continued fraction representation with convergents pn/qn, there exists α' for which the denominator sequence for convergents is a subsequence of (qn). It was shown that such an α' exists if the continued fraction representation was “nearly periodic” with odd period. The following is a generalization of the results of part I to semi-regular continued fractions, where the problem seems to fit more naturally.

Let E be a quasi-complete locally convex space and A a subset of E. It is shown that if every real-valued C∞-function in the weak topology of E is bounded on A, then A is relatively weakly compact. Furthermore, if all real-valued C∞-functions on E are bounded on A, then A is relatively compact in the associated semi-weak topology of E.

Let A be a dual B*-algebra and Ap the p-class in A. We show that the conjugate space of A1 is A**, the second conjugate space of A. We also obtain a three lines theorem for Ap (1 ≦p≦∞).

In this article a completion process for promonoidal categories is used to determine a sufficient condition for the existence of a promonoidal convolution structure on the category of functors between two promonoidal categories. This, in turn, leads to a partial closed structure on the 2-category of promonoidal categories, promonoidal functors, and promonoidal natural transformations.

In this note, we draw attention to a natural connection between a group closely related to the homogeneous Lorentz group, and the most general set of measurements possible on particles with only two discrete states. We may think of these two states as “spin up” and “spin down’, represented by the vectors α = (1, 0) and β = (0, 1), respectively.

Let ${\mathcal{A}}$ be a semisimple Banach algebra with minimal left ideals and $\text{soc}({\mathcal{A}})$ be the socle of ${\mathcal{A}}$. We prove that if $\text{soc}({\mathcal{A}})$ is an essential ideal of ${\mathcal{A}}$, then every 2-local derivation on ${\mathcal{A}}$ is a derivation. As applications of this result, we can easily show that every 2-local derivation on some algebras, such as semisimple modular annihilator Banach algebras, strongly double triangle subspace lattice algebras and ${\mathcal{J}}$-subspace lattice algebras, is a derivation.

D. E. Cohen has shown in [1] that a variety consisting of metabelian groups has a finite basis for its laws. In this paper I make use of Cohen's result to prove the following theorem.

The Fitting class of finite soluble π-groups, where π is an arbitrary set of primes, has the property that each complement of an -avoided, complemented chief factor of any finite soluble group G contains an -injector of G. In other words, each -avoided, complemented chief factor of G is -complemented in the sense of Hartley (see [2]).

Hyperidentities were introduced by Taylor, and their properties have been studied by Taylor, Bergman, Penner, Graczynska, Schweigert, Wismath, and others. In particular, Penner has produced bases for the hyperidentities of various types satisfied by the variety of semilattices.

In this paper, we look at bases for the hyperidentities satisfied by some other varieties of semigroups. We first investigate solid and hyper-associative varieties of semigroups, and use a result of Graczynska's to form a basis for the hyperidentities of type (2) for varieties with these properties. We then produce bases for the hyperidentities satisfied by the variety R B of rectangular bands, and prove that the collection of all hyperidentities satisfied by R B is not finitely based. Finally, we use the R B results to give hyperidentity bases for some varieties of nilpotent semigroups.

Two different ordinary differential operators L1 and L2 (not of the same order) defined on two adjacent intervals I1 and I2, respectively, with certain mixed conditions at the interface are considered. These problems are encountered in the study of ‘acoustic waveguides in ocean’, ‘transverse vibrations in nonhomogeneous strings’, etc. A complete set of physical conditions on the system give rise to three types of (selfadjoint) boundary value problems associated with the pair (L1, L2). In a series of papers, a systematic study of these new classes of problems is being developed. In the present paper, we construct the fundamental systems and exhibit the forms of solutions of nonhomogeneous problems associated with the pair (L1, L2).

Some new results concerning tubular sets are presented, with applications to the convergence of the Polya algorithm in the contexts of simultaneous approximation and approximation of multivariate functions by univariate functions. (The Polya algorithm constructs a best uniform approximation from the limit, as p → ∞, of best Lp approximations.)

We investigate the assumptions under which a subclass of flat quasicoherent sheaves on a quasicompact and semiseparated scheme allows us to ‘mock’ the homotopy category of projective modules. Our methods are based on module-theoretic properties of the subclass of flat modules involved as well as their behaviour with respect to Zariski localizations. As a consequence we get that, for such schemes, the derived category of flat quasicoherent sheaves is equivalent to the derived category of very flat quasicoherent sheaves. If, in addition, the scheme satisfies the resolution property then both derived categories are equivalent to the derived category of infinite-dimensional vector bundles. The equivalences are inferred from a Quillen equivalence between the corresponding models.

Let A be a finite dimensional algebra over a field F. Let R and S be biregular algebras over F such that 1R ∈ R and 1S ∈ S. We show that if R/P≃A≃ S/M for each primitive ideal P in A and each primitive ideal M in S then End FR≃ End S implies R≃S.

We determine the dimension of the space of Hodge cycles for the generic fibers of the Kuga fiber varieties associated to certain quaternion algebras.

A veristy is called solutionally complete if any solvable system of algebraic equations over an algebra A in which has at most one solution in every extension of A in has the solution in A. A necessary and sufficient condition for solutional completeness is given which is a weaker form of the strong amalgamation property.

The Thue–Morse sequence is a prototypical automatic sequence found in diverse areas of mathematics, and in computer science. We study occurrences of factors w within this sequence, or more precisely, the sequence of gaps between consecutive occurrences. This gap sequence is morphic; we prove that it is not automatic as soon as the length of w is at least $2$ , thereby answering a question by J. Shallit in the affirmative. We give an explicit method to compute the discrepancy of the number of occurrences of the block $\mathtt {01}$ in the Thue–Morse sequence. We prove that the sequence of discrepancies is the sequence of output sums of a certain base- $2$ transducer.

This paper concerns the completions of partially ordered groups introduced by Fuchs (1965a) and the author (to appear); the p.o. groups under consideration are, generally, abelian tight Riesz groups, and so, throughout, the word “group” will refer to an abelian group.

In section 3 we meet the cornerstone of the work, the central product theorem, by means of which we can interpret the Cauchy completion of a tight Riesz group in terms of the completion of any of its o-ideals; one particularly important case arises when the group has a minimal o-ideal. Such a minimal o-ideal is o-simple, and in section 6 the completion of an isolated o-simple tight Riesz group is shown to be a tight Riesz real vector space.

It has been known that mixed automorphic forms arise naturally as holomorphic forms on elliptic varieties and that they include classical automorphic forms as a special case. In this paper, we show how to construct mixed automorphic forms of type (k, l) from elliptic modular forms to give nontrivial examples of mixed automorphic forms.

It is shown that a weakly compact convex set in a locally convex space is a zonoform if and only if it is the order continuous image of an order interval in a Dedekind complete Riesz space. While this result implies the Kluv´nek characterization of the range of a vector measure, the techniques of the present paper are purely order theoretic.
