Let α be an irrational algebraic number of degree k over the rationals. Let K denote the field generated by α over the rationals and let a denote the ideal denominator of α. Then Cassels [3] has shown that for sufficiently large integral N > 0 distinctly more than half the integers n, are such that (n+α)a is divisible by a prime ideal pn which does not divide (m+α)a for any integer m ≠ n satisfying . The purpose of this note is to point out that minor modification of Cassel's proof enables the extension of the interval for n from to , and to derive results on the proportion of values n, for which the values f(n) of a given integral polynomial in n are divisible by a prime p > N.

If (X, τ) is a topological space, is a family of subsets of X, then the expansion of τ by is the topology τ() on X having τ ∪ as a subbase. If (X, τ) has property , when does (X, τ()) have property ? In this paper we answer this question for the property of dimension. We apply our techniques to first countability and related properties.

The definitions of the functions used to described Doppler broadened Breit Wigner contours are extended to the complex domain. The properties of the analytic functions are then used to evaluate a number of integrals by the theory of residues.

This paper deals with the interpolation of given real boundary values into a bounded domain in Euclidean n-space, under a prescribed gradient bound. It is well known that there exist an upper solution (an inf-convolution) and a lower solution (a sup-convolution) to this problem, provided that a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. If the upper and lower solutions coincide somewhere in the domain, then several interesting consequences follow. They are considered here. Basically, the upper and lower solutions must be regular wherever they coincide.

Hanna Neumann was one of the pioneers of the algebraic theory of nearrings. In the functional analysis, the near-rings appear as the sets of non-linear mappings of a space into itself. The relations between the algebraic properties of these near-rings and the analytic structures of the spaces and mappings involved have not been fully investigated. The purpose of this note is to consider one of such problems.

A churning transformation can be defined on probability measures by an infinite sequence of finite permutations of mass. Continuity and absolute continuity of measures are invariants for such transformations but it is shown that certain probability measures whose Fourier-Stieltjes transforms fail to vanish at infinity may be churned into measures whose transforms do vanish in this sense.

Let IE, ∧ and ∧R denote the collections of all non-negative integers, isols and regressive isols respectively. An ω-group is a pair (α, p) where (1) α ⊆ E, (2) p(x, y) is a partial recursive group multiplication for α and (3) the function which maps each element of α to its inverse under p has a partial recursive extension. If G = (α, p) is an ω-group, we call the recursive equivalence type of a the RET or order of G (written o(G)). Let GR = {T∈∧R′T = o(G) for some ω-group G}. It follows from the version of the Lagrange Theorem given in [4] that ∧R − GR is non-empty and has cardinality c. In this paper we characterise the isols in GR as follows: A regressive isol T belongs to GR if and only if T∈E or T is infinite and there exist a regressive isol U ≦ T and a function an from E into E − {0} such that U ≦*an and T = ΠUan. (The “≦*” is denned in [2]). In presenting the proof of this result, we shall assume that the reader is familiar with either [3] or [4]. The proof that, given an and U ≦*an, a group of order ΠUan exists is based on the natural trick—one constructs a direct product of disjoint cyclic groups of order a0, a1,… indexed by elements of a set of RET U. The proof that any regressive group G has order of the form ΠUan is trivial for finite groups; the proof for infinite regressive groups is based upon the construction of an ascending chain of finite subgroups Gi of G such that and .

Products of positive measures play a very important role in analysis. The purpose of this paper is to construct a theory of products of two measures taking values in two (possibly different) Banach spaces. A Fubini theorem is obtained which generalizes the Fubinitheorem for the Bochner integral (Dunford and Schwartz (1958), Theorem 9, page 190), and hence also the classical result.

We use the theory of vector integration presented in Dinculeanu (1967). Our arguments rely upon a standard sort of application of the dominated convergence theorem (cf. Dunford and Schwartz (1958), Theorem 9, page 190), and therefore do not appear to generalize to any theory of integration where this theorem is lacking (e.g. Bartle (1956)).

In this paper we continue our previous studies and derive all possible expressions for a meromorphic function and its differential polunomials when they share two finite distinct values a1, a2, CM (counting multiplicities) in majority.

Let all the zeros of a polynomial P(z) of degree n lie in |z|≤ 1 and a be a given complex number. In this paper we study the location of the zeros of higher derivatives of the polynomial (z – z) P(z) and obtain certain generalizations of some results of Rahman and Rubinstein. We shall also extend a result of Goodman, Rahman and Ratti for the zeros of the polar derivative of the polynomial P(z) given P(l) = 0.

The 3-metabelian groups are those groups in which every subgroup generated by three elements is metabelian. In [2] it was stated and it [3] it was proved that the variety of such groups may be defined by the one law (by [a, b, c, d] we mean [[a, b], [c, d]], and for other definitions and notation we refer to [1]). Recently Bachmuth and Lewin obtained in [1] the surprising and remarkable result that the same variety is defined by the law Now (2) is reminiscent of the relation which holds in all groups and which is apparently due to Philip Hall. Using the identities , etc., we find that (2) is equivalent to where u = [z, x, y] and v = [y, z, z] [z, x, y]. Note that apart from certain displeasing conjugates (4) is curiously similar to both (1) and (2).

Let k be a polygonal knot in Euclidean 3-space, p a projection onto a plane. If p;/k is 1:1 except at a finite number of points, which are not vertices of k and at which p/k is 2:1, then p(k) is said to be a regular projection of k this means that p(k) is closed curve with a finite number of double points (“crossings”) which are not points of tangency. Clearly for every polygonal knot there is a plane onto which it can be projected regularly. At each crossing of p(k), the knot k assigns an overcrossing arc and an undercrossing arc of the projection; conversely, if at each crossing we say which arc is an overcrossing, then there is a knot, uniquely determined up to homeomorphism, with this regular projection with the assigned overcrossings.

If A is a T-orderable R-module and S is a multiplicative subsemigroup of R, each s∈S acting as a monomorphism of A, then it is possible sometimes A in a T-orderable R-module on which each s∈S as an automorphism. We show that such an embedding does not always exist and, by generalizing a theorem of Kokorin and Kopytov, provide a partial answer to the question “when is such an embedding possible?”

We begin a study of invariant isometric immersions into Riemannian manifolds (M, g) equipped with a Riemannian flow generated by a unit Killing vector field ξ. We focus our attention on those (M, g) where ξ is complete and such that the reflections with respect to the flow lines are global isometries (that is, (M, g) is a Killing-transversally symmetric space) and on the subclass of normal flow space forms. General results are derived and several examples are provided.

The Kasparov groups are extended to the setting of inverse limits of G-C*-algebras, where G is assumed to be a locally compact group. The K K-product and other important features of the theory are generalized to this setting.

We show that under a suitable transversality condition, the intersection of two rational subtori in an algebraic torus (ℂ*)n is a finite group which can be determined using the torsion part of some associated lattice. We also give applications to the study of characteristic varieties of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an example we discuss A. Suciu’s line arrangement, the so-called deleted B3-arrangement.

Using the notion of spherical modification and results from Morse theory a general technique is described for constructing manifolds whose strong category is small (≦ 3) but whose homological structure is complex.

We revisit the coordinatisation method for projective planes by considering the consequences of using finite fields to coordinatise projective planes of prime power order. This leads to some general restrictions on the form of the resulting planar ternary ring (PTR) when viewed as a trivariate polynomial over the field. We also consider how the Lenz–Barlotti type of the plane being coordinatised impacts the form of the PTR polynomial, thereby deriving further restrictions.

We consider ineducible Goppa codes of length qm over Fq defined by polynomials of degree r, where q = pt and p, m, r are distinct primes. The number of such codes, inequivalent under coordinate permutations and field automorphisms, is determined.
