This paper studies topological upper and lower semicontinuity of the minimal value multifunction and the solution multifunction for optimization problems, which are defined in terms of cones, subject to perturbations in constraints. It extends the results of Tanino and Sawaragi to finite dimensions and one of Berge to multiple objective optimization problems.

The great theorem on convergence of integrals is due in its usual form to Lebesgue [2] though its origins go back to Arzela [1]. It says that the integral of the limit of a sequence of functions is the limit of the integrals if the sequence is dominated by an integrable function. This paper investigates the converse problem — if we know that we may take limits under the integral sign, then what can we say about the convergence? The answer is found for functions of a real variable, but it is easily extended to any space with a countably additive measure. Finally the result is illustrated by an application to Fourier series.

Let E be an Archimedean Riesz space and let Orth∞(E) be the f-algebra consisting of all extended orthomorphisms on E, that is, of all order bounded linear operators T:D→E, with D an order dense ideal in E, such that T(B∩D) ⊆ B for every band B in E. We give conditions on E and on a Riesz subspace F of E insuring that every T ∈ Orth∞(F) can be extended to some ∈ Orth∞(E), and we also consider the problem of inversing an extended orthomorphism on its support. The same problems are also studied in the case of σ-orthomorphisms, that is, extended orthomorphisms with a super order dense domain. Furthermore, some applications are given.

We define a notion of conjugacy in singular Artin moniods, and solve the corresponding conjugacy problem for finite types. We sgiw that this definition is appropriate to describe type (1) singular Markov moves on singular braids. Parabolic submonoids of singular Artin monoids are defined and, in finite type, are shown to be singular Artin monoids. Solutions to conjugacy-type problems of parabolic submonoids are described. Geometric objects defined by Fenn, Rolfsen and Zhu, called (j, k)-bands, are algebraically characterised, and a procedure is given which determines when a word represents a (j, k)-band.

In this paper a proper class of barrelled spaces which strictly contains the suprabarrelled spaces is considered. A closed graph theorem and some permanence properties are given. This allows us to prove the necessity of a condition of a theorem of S. A. Saxon and P. P. Narayanaswami by constructing an example of a non-suprabarrelled Baire-like space which is a dense subspace of a Fréchet space and is not an (LF)-space under any strong locally convex topology.

Deleanu, Frei and Hilton have developed the notion of generalized Adams completion in a categorical context; they have also suggested the dual notion, namely, the Adams cocompletion of an object in a category. In this paper the different stages of the Cartan-Whitehead decomposition of a 0-connected space are shown to be the cocompletions of the space with respect to suitable sets of morphisms.

Two projective nonsingular complex algebraic curves X and Y defined over the field R of real numbers can be isomorphic while their sets X(R) and Y(R) of R-rational points could be even non homeomorphic. This leads to the count of the number of real forms of a complex algebraic curve X, that is, those nonisomorphic real algebraic curves whose complexifications are isomorphic to X. In this paper we compute, as a function of genus, the maximum number of such real forms that a complex algebraic curve admits.

The (2, 3, ν) bipacking number is determined for all integers ν, and the number of non-isomorphic bipackings is found for small values of ν. The general solution for lambada packings of pairs into triples is deduced from the results for λ = 1 and λ = 2.

Two index laws for fractional integrals and derivatives, which have been extensively studied by E. R. Love, are shown to be special cases of an index law for general powers of certain differential operators, by means of the theory developed in a previous paper. Discussion of the two index laws, which are rather different in appearance, can thus be unified.

We study the Mahler measure of the trinomials ${z}^{n} \pm {z}^{k} \pm 1$. We give two criteria to identify those whose Mahler measure is less than $1. 381\hspace{0.167em} 356\cdots = M(1+ {z}_{1} + {z}_{2} )$. We prove that these criteria are true for $n$ sufficiently large.

An “elementary” proof of Peano's existence theorem is given that, in addition to avoiding the Ascoli lemma, relies neither on Dini's theorem, nor on uniform continuity of the right hand side of φ' = f(t,φ). It is based on superfunctions. Also, another standard proof of that theorem, based on approximation of the right hand side, is made elementary.

Consider the additive effects outliers (A.O.) model where one observes , with The sequence of r.v.s is independent of and , are i.i.d. with d.f. , where the d.f.s Ln, n ≦ 0, are not necessarily known and εj's are i.i.d.. This paper discusses the asymptotic behavior of functional least squares estimators under the above model. Uniform consistency and uniform strong consistency of these estimators are proven. The weak convergence of these estimators to a Gaussian process and their asymptotic biases are also discussed under the above A.O. model.

It is proved that a quantale is projective if and only if it is isomorphic to a derived tensor quantale over a completely distributive sup-lattice. Furthermore, an intrinsic characterization of projectivity is given in terms of inertial sup-lattices and derivations of quantales.

Semirings of endomorphisms of semigroups form an important class of semirings. All examples which can be found in the literature concern semigroups with a subcommutative operation. We show that there exists a non-subcommutative semigroup whose endomorphisms form a semiring (this answers a question raised by Professor A. H. Clifford). We also give an example of a semigroup whose set of endomorphisms is not embeddable into a semiring; however it is the disjoint union of two semirings, but one of these semirings is not embeddable into a semiring with identity.

A group G is locally graded if every finitely generated nontrivial subgroup of G has a nontrivial finite image. Let N (2, k)* denote the class of groups in which every infinite subset contains a pair of elements that generate a nilpotent subgroup of class at most k. We show that if G is a finitely generated locally graded N (2, k)*-group, then there is a positive integer c depending only on k such that G/Zc (G) is finite.

The aim of this paper is to give a classification theorem for commutative torsion filial rings.

Rooted monounary algebras can be considered as an algebraic counterpart of directed rooted trees. We work towards a characterization of the lattice of compatible quasiorders by describing its join- and meet-irreducible elements. We introduce the limit $\cB _\infty $ of all $d$-dimensional Boolean cubes $\Two ^d$ as a monounary algebra; then the natural order on $\Two ^d$ is meet-irreducible. Our main result is that any completely meet-irreducible quasiorder of a rooted algebra is a homomorphic preimage of the natural partial order (or its inverse) of a suitable subalgebra of $\cB _\infty $. For a partial order, it is known that complete meet-irreducibility means that the corresponding partially ordered structure is subdirectly irreducible. For a rooted monounary algebra it is shown that this property implies that the unary operation has finitely many nontrivial kernel classes and its graph is a binary tree.

Let and denote respectively the variety of groups of exponent dividing e, the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most c, the class of nilpotent groups and the class of finite groups. It follows from a result due to Kargapolov and Čurkin and independently to Groves that in a variety not containing all metabelian groups, each polycyclic group G belongs to . We show that G is in fact in , where c is an integer depending only on the variety. On the other hand, it is not always possible to find an integer e (depending only on the variety) such that G belongs to but we characterize the varieties in which that is possible. In this case, there exists a function f such that, if G is d-generated, then G ∈ So, when e = 1, we obtain an extension of Zel'manov's result about the restricted Burnside problem (as one might expect, this result is used in our proof). Finally, we show that the class of locally nilpotent groups of a variety forms a variety if and only if for some integers c′, e′.

In this paper we consider classes of vector lattices over subfields of the real numbers. Among other properties we relate the archimedean condition of such a vector lattice to the uniqueness of scalar multiplication and the linearity of l-automorphisms. If a vector lattice in the classes considered admits an essential subgroup that is not a minimal prime, then it also admits a non-linear l-automorphism and more than one scalar multiplication. It is also shown that each l-group contains a largest archimedean convex l-subgroup which admits a unique scalar multiplication.

A lattice formation is a class of groups whose elements are the direct product of Hall subgroups corresponding to pairwise disjoint sets of primes. In this paper Fitting classes with stronger closure properties involving F-subnormal subgroups, for a lattice formation F of full characteristic, are studied. For a subgroup-closed saturated formation G, a characterisation of the G-projectors of finite soluble groups is also obtained. It is inspired by the characterisation of the Carter subgroups as the N-projectors, N being the class of nilpotent groups.
