Let µ be Radon measure on Rd which may be non doubling. The only condition that µ must satisfy is the size condition µ(B(x, r)) ≤ Crn for some fixed n є (0, d). Recently, Tolsa introduced the spaces RBMO(µ) and Hatb1.∞ (µ), which, in some ways, play the role of the classical spaces BMO and H1 in case u is a doubling measure. In this paper, the author considers the local versions of the spaces RBMO(µ) and Hatb1.∞ (µ) in the sense of Goldberg and establishes the connections between the spaces RBMO(µ) and Hatb1.∞ (µ) with their local versions. An interpolation result of linear operators is also given.

Some fixed point theorems are obtained for weekly inward mappings which extend or generalize those results by K. Fan, B. Halpern or S. Reich. Various formulations of inward and outward concepts are also briefly discussed.

The behaviour of waves in elastic solids with linear stress strain curves is expressed, for plane strain, by a pair of simultaneous partial differential equations of hyperbolic type. Detailed behaviour of the waves is examined by solving these equations numerically.

A doubly transitive permutation group of degree p2 + 1, p a prime, is proved to be doubly primitive for p ≠ 2. We also show that if such a group is not triply transitive then either it is a normal extension of P S L (2, p2) or the stabilizer of a point is a rank 3 group.

In recent years there has been extensive development in the theory and techniques of mathematical programming in finite spaces. It would be very useful in practice to extend this development to infinite spaces, in order to treat more realistically the problems that arise for example in economic situations involving infinitely divisible processes, and in particular problems involving time as a continuous variable. A more mathematical reason for seeking such generalisation is possibly that of obtaining a unification mathematical programming with other branches of mathematics concerned with extrema, such as the calculus of variations.

Let K be a field of prime characteristic p and let G be a finite group with a Sylow p-subgroup of order p. For any finite-dimensional K G-module V and any positive integer n, let Ln (V) denote the nth homogeneous component of the free Lie K-algebra generated by (a basis of) V. Then Ln(V) can be considered as a K G-module, called the nth Lie power of V. The main result of the paper is a formula which describes the module structure of Ln(V) up to isomorphism.

Orthogonal diagonal latin squares of order n, ODLS(n), are orthogonal latin squares of order n with transversals on both the main diagonal and the back diagonal of each square. It has been proven that ODLS(n) exist for all n except n = 2, 3, 6, 10, 14, 15, 18 and 26, in which the first three are impossible. In this note an example of ODLS(14) is given.

We describe a scheme for constructing explicitly solvable arbitrage-free models for stock price. This is used to study a model similar to one introduced by Cox and Ross, where the volatility of the stock is proportional to the square root of the stock price. We derive a formula for the value of a European call option based on this model and give a procedure for estimating parameters and for testing the validity of the model.

We show that the classical interpretation of H3(G, A) is equivalent to Taylor's solutions of compound extensions of groups. It is also equivalent to the exactness to an eight term sequence. Only halves of the equivalences are fully shown in the paper but the other halves are clear.

In his paper (4), Mahler established several strong quantitative results on approximation in algebraic number fields using the geometry of numbers. In the present paper I derive analogous results for algebraic function fields of one variable using an analogue of the geometry of numbers.

We provide a short, intuitive proof of Isbell’s zigzag theorem.

K. D. Magill has investigated the semigroup generated by the idempotent continuous mappings of a topological space into itself and examined whether this semigroup determines the space to within homeomorphism. By analogy with this (and related work of Bridget Bos Baird) we now consider the semigroup generated by nilpotent continuous partial mappings of a space into itself.

A point of departure for this paper is the famous theorem of Hermite and Biehler: If f (z) is a polynomial with complex coefficients ak and its zeros zk satisfy Im Zk < 0, then the polynomials with coefficients Re ak, and Im ak have only real zeros.

We generalize this theorem for some entire functions. The entire functions in Theorem 2 and Theorem 3 are of first and second genus respectively.

Let Fq denote the finite field with q elements, Zm the residue class ring Z/mZ. It is known that the projective linear groups G = PSL2(Fq) and PGL2(Fq) (q a prime-power ≥ 4) are characterised among finite insoluble groups by the property that, if two cyclic subgroups of G of even order intersect non-trivially, they generate a cyclic subgroup (cf. Brauer, Suzuki, Wall [2], Gorenstein, Walter [3]). In this paper, we give a similar characterisation of the groups G = PSL2 (Zþt+1) and PGL2 (Zþt+1) (p a prime ≥ 5, t ≥ 1).

The object of this note is to extend Dini's theorem about (monotonic) sequences of continuous functions on a compact topological space to the case where the underlying domain is an abstract group which is free from topological restrictions. Continuous functions are replaced by almost periodic real-valued functions and the main result may be stated as follows: If a monotonically increasing sequence (fn) of almost periodic real-valued functions on a group G converges pointwise to an almost periodic function f on G, then the sequence converges to f uniformly. The basic idea of the present (elementary) proof is due to v. Kampen [2] and A. Weil [4], i.e., every almost periodic function on a group induces a kind of compact topology in it, relative to which the function is continuous. We modify this idea with the aid of the mean-value of an almost periodic function and obtain a pseudometric topology. This topology facilitates convergence proofs greatly. Moreover, it turns out to be equivalent with the previous one (Lemma 1). No use will be made of the theory of bounded matrix representations. This is significant as any use of the ‘Approximation Theorem’ [3, p. 66, see also p. 226] would violate the claim of an elementary proof.

Let ρ and σ be two congruences on a completely 0-simple semigroup. Suppose that there is a maximal chain of congruences from ρ to σ which is of finite length. Then, as we shall show, any maximal chain of congruences from ρ to σ finite and of the same length.

We investigate the problem of the existence of filters with some properties. This leads to a solution of two problems of Ulam concerning σ-fields on the real line.

A Banach algebra $A$ is said to be a zero Jordan product determined Banach algebra if, for every Banach space $X$, every bilinear map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}:A\times A\rightarrow X$ satisfying $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(a,b)=0$ whenever $a$, $b\in A$ are such that $ab+ba=0$, is of the form $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}(a,b)=\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}(ab+ba)$ for some continuous linear map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}$. We show that all $C^{\ast }$-algebras and all group algebras $L^{1}(G)$ of amenable locally compact groups have this property and also discuss some applications.
