Proceeding from the dichotomy theme/rheme, we aim to produce a typology of certain syntactical structures of French, recorded from a corpus of oral dialogues gathered in authentic situations. The first group affects statements which present the topicalization of a component: these statements are divided into four types, depending on whether the topicalized component is or is not associated with a lexical marker and with a re–occurrence through a substitute pronoun. The second group includes structures built on the rhematic marker ‘c’est': they are likewise divided into four main types, themselves subdivided into eight variants which appear to play distinct parts in the structuration of dialogues.

En dehors des lexiques spécialisés et des structures syntaxiques spécifiques, c'est la prosodie qui fait que tous reconnaissent sans hésitation les textes radiophoniques. Ceux-ci se distinguent clairement du parler spontané et, dans une certaine mesure, d'autres formes de l'écrit oralisé: l'accentuation barytonique, des patrons rythmico-mélodiques spécifiques et une prosodie qui assume un rôle particulier dans l'organisation de la phrase seraient tous motivés par un désir de la part de l'annonceur de faire apparaître une qualité professionnelle.

Après un bref survol des descriptions du style oral des présentateurs faites par d'autres chercheurs, nous proposons ici de faire une analyse qualitative et quantitative de nos propres données recueillies en 1994 auprès des annonceurs de Radio France Internationale, dans le but de confirmer, modifier ou réfuter quelques-unes des hypothèses proposées auparavant. Enfin, nous mettrons en lumière quelques aspects de la prosodie des annonceurs de radio qui restent à étudier de plus près.

Ce travail propose une comparaison des emplois spatiaux de quitter et partir s'appuyant sur l'exploitation d'exemples de la base Frantext entre 1880 et 1970. Après avoir exposé les principales oppositions quantitatives et qualitatives émergeant de ce recensement, nous proposons une analyse de partir qui tente de déterminer la/les relation(s) locative(s) élémentaire(s) sous-tendant son contenu sémantique. Cette analyse sert de point de départ à l'étude de quitter, verbe dont l'examen montre qu'il peut asserter puis nier un éventail beaucoup plus large de relations spatiales. Cet article propose une analyse de différents systèmes de transcription manuelle des phénomènes prosodiques. L'objectif en est double:

1. (i) évaluer les avantages et inconvénients des systèmes décrits en prenant comme « système référent » l'API (alphabet phonétique international). En effet, ce système, bien que surtout conçu pour transcrire les faits segmentaux (ou suprasegmentaux de nature lexicale) a l'avantage d’être largement accepté et utilisé, contrairement aux systèmes développés pour la prosodie;

2. (ii) définir quelles caractéristiques doit avoir tout système de transcription pour devenir non seulement un bon outil pour proposer une représentation symbolique des faits prosodiques linguistiquement pertinents, mais également pour faciliter le travail d'analyse et de modélisation des phénomènes prosodiques.

This article reports on vocabulary learning in French during Year 12 by 150 pupils in 15 English comprehensive schools. Vocabulary progress over two school terms was investigated in the context of learner strategy training that targeted listening and writing. This intervention was carried out in eleven schools and results compared with a comparison group of four schools. Recognition vocabulary and writing vocabulary measures taken during the students' course are compared with listening and writing scores, and examination results. Results suggest that interventions which target listening and writing skills do not lead to significant gains in vocabulary through incidental learning and the deployment of vocabulary in writing tasks. However, it also appears that extra time and effort devoted to developing listening and writing is not at the expense of vocabulary learning.

L'objectif de ce travail est de mettre en relief les particularités du syntagme démonstratif cette fois (-ci/-là) vis-à-vis des SN démonstratifs standard. Nous montrerons, dans nos deux premières parties, que le statut nominal spécial du N fois engage pour cette fois (-ci/-là), non seulement un fonctionnement syntaxique particulier, mais aussi deux contraintes référentielles: l'une exigeant que l'on récupère le type d'occurrence verbale pertinent, l'autre nécessitant une pluralité d'occurrences. Dans une troisième et dernière partie, nous aborderons les conséquences informationnelles qui découlent de son statut de symbole indexical.

Cet article propose une analyse des emplois des verbes modaux devoir et pouvoir en français moderne et en français médiéval. L’examen des emplois attestés à ces deux époques différentes permet de valider pour le français certaines hypothèses émises dans le cadre de la théorie de la grammaticalisation concernant l'évolution sémantique des modaux. Nous attirons néanmoins l’attention sur le fait que pouvoir, même en français moderne, n’a peut-être pas développé l’emploi épistémique subjectif qu’on lui prête. De plus, l’emploi aléthique (ou logique) des modaux, souvent ignoré dans la théorie de la grammaticalisation ou la littérature linguistique en générale, a certainement un rôle à jouer dans le développement du sens épistémique.

This study investigates the hypothesis of young people having the multi-skills required to switch between formal and informal communication. We collected samples of the written output of students across different media and communication situations. The results obtained through dictation tests show that the students’ level is relatively low, with a majority of grammatical errors. The analysis of linguistic forms common to the corpora indicates that all the participants use traditional spelling in at least one of them. Lastly, we present a qualitative analysis of spelling variation and an overview of the teenagers’ linguistic representations.

Contrary to most French grammars claiming that French only allows masculine agreement when mixed-gender nouns are conjoined, we show that closest conjunct agreement (CCA) does exist in contemporary French, as in other Romance languages, and is the preferred strategy for prenominal adjectives. Using data from a large corpus (FrWac) and an acceptability rating experiment, we show that (feminine) CCA is well accepted in contemporary French, and should be distinguished from attraction errors, despite the norm prescribing masculine agreement. We consider recent Government-Binding work on sentential negation, e.g. by Pollock, and evaluate a fundamental assumption made about the syntax of negative clauses. While accepting that ne is generated as the head of NegP, we reject the dual claim that pas is characteristically: (a) a maximal projection, and (b) base-generated as the specifier of ne. We offer a three-sided argument against such an analysis, invoking: (a) the incompatibility of the proposal with the status of pas as a nominal; (b) the interaction between pas, etc, and indefinite direct objects; and (c) the syntax of ‘adverbials’. We go on to consider Obenauer's work on ‘quantification at a distance’ and Battye's work on ‘nominal quantification’. On the basis of this work, we posit that pas is generated lower in clause structure, either VP-adjoined or as the head of a determiner-less direct object DP.

Study of a large number of aberrant verb forms (‘écarts de la norme’) in Canadian French reveals a variety of pressures, paradigm levelling, markedness reduction and iconicity in particular, affecting the inflectional structures. These verb forms, when seen in the light of the theoretical proposals of Natural Morphology, permit a ranking of naturalness principles within that approach and contribute to proposals for the resolution of ‘naturalness conflicts’.

Cet article propose une analyse de quelques énoncés malédictifs en tant que marqueurs de croyances et de valeurs culturelles. L'étude est menée sur des corpus en français et en anglais issus de l'internet autour de ‘maudire’, ‘damn’ et ‘curse’. En interrogeant les particularités lexico-grammaticales de ces énoncés, en observant tour à tour leur valeur expressive, leur potentiel insultant, leur validation/invalidation interlocutive et les effets pragmatiques qu'ils préconisent, on finit par dégager une distinction au niveau de l'acte de langage lui-même: instrumental en français, où il vise l'intersubjectivation des émotions, vs. hostile en anglais, où le destinataire est directement interpellé et risque de perdre la face. Cette différence renvoie à des causalités socio-culturelles plus profondes (interdits, croyances, rapport aux émotions), mais aussi à des contraintes structurelles liées aux propriétés des lexèmes susmentionnés.

Poursuivant un ensemble de travaux développés à Paris III sur les relations entre énonciation et intonation dans le français oral spontané, je presénte ici quelques hypoth`ses nouvelles sur la valeur énonciative de ces variations. Je propose de considérer que le point le plus haut de la plage intonative du locuteur montre que les deux participants du dialogue sont impliqués dans le point de vue qui est développée (ce qui se produit entre autres à la finale du «theme» ou de l'interrogation totale), alors que les niveaux inférieurs de la plage intonative signifient que le locuteur développe un point de vue qui lui est personnel et qui ne met pas en jeu une pensée autre (ceci se produit entre autres à la finale d'une assertion ou d'une injonction). Je propose aussi de considérer qu'il y a un niveau neutre de Fo, où se situent les hésitations et les incises (lorsque le locuteur juge nécessaire d'ajouter des gloses sur ce qu'il est en train d'énoncer).

This introductory article introduces the field of second language acquisition (SLA) to specialists in French linguistics who are not familiar with it. Its purpose is to present a map of the field which will then enable the reader to better situate the following in depth articles which present focused theoretical and empirical investigations as they apply to French. The first part summarises recent, and sometimes apparently contradictory, research findings. The second part explores the theoretical approaches which have been most influential in recent investigations, outlining where each of these approaches originates, and which aspects of the SLA process it investigates.

Cet article constitue une tentative d'analyse d'un emploi peu étudié de l'imparfait – l'imparfait préludique – tel qu'il a été observé dans les énoncés authentiques prononcés par une petite fille en situation de jeu. À partir de la description du contexte ainsi que du co-texte, nous essayons d'expliquer en quoi la valeur aspectuo-temporelle de l'imparfait répond parfaitement aux contraintes linguistiques et situationnelles de cet usage; puis de mieux comprendre les raisons de cet emploi chez l'enfant observé en évaluant tour à tour deux hypothèses proposées dans la littérature (reality-switching ou self-effacement) pour rendre compte de l'effet modal produit par l'imparfait dans ce tour.

This study investigates the variation in the expression of Future Temporal Reference in text messages in Belgian and Québécois French. Three variants are considered: the Futurate Present, the Synthetic Future and the Analytic Future. The results of multivariate analyses show that the use of the Futurate Present does not appear to be subject to dialectal variation: both communities use this variant at similar rates, and the use of the variant is constrained by the same linguistic factors. The two dialects show differences in their choice of the Synthetic vs the Analytic Future. Unlike Québécois French, Belgian French strongly favours the Synthetic Future. The two dialects also differ with respect to the linguistic constraints in effect. Our analysis shows the need to explore the relationship between variants, and to distinguish between Covert T (realized as Present tense) and Overt T (either Synthetic or Analytic Future). Our results point toward the hybrid nature of text messages: while our results show patterns of use in line with oral/conversational corpora as reflected by the dialectal variation observed, text messages are not exempt from the influence of written French, as shown by the use of Synthetic Future forms in affirmative sentences in the Québec corpus.

This article examines a range of predicate- and proposition-anaphoric phenomena in French, chiefly involving the ‘neuter’ clitic pronouns le, y and en, from the point of view of their discourse motivation. One aim is to characterise the relatively little-studied phenomenon of ‘non-discrete’ reference in discourse. Another is to determine the extent to which the speaker\ writer can use an anaphoric expression in such a way as to ‘release’ the predicative element from within a co-occuring functionally non-perdicative expression or sequence, or to asssign a ‘third order’ entity status as a mutually validated fact to what in context has been interpreted as a predication. Such uses constitute what I am calling the ‘discourse-operator’ function which anaphoric expressions may fulfil in the appropriate discourse context. The speacker\writer's ability to use predicate anaphors in this kind of the way is constrained by the meta-discursive criterion of coherence.

This paper presents the results of a sociolinguistic analysis of ne use/non-use in the spoken French of learners of French as a second language enrolled in their first or fourth year of undergraduate studies in a bilingual university in Ontario, Canada. Specifically, it examines the impact of various linguistic and extra-linguistic factors on the students’ use of the variants and compares the patterns found to previous research on ne use/non-use among Ontario high school FSL learners and on other sociolinguistic variables in the speech of the same university FSL learners under study here. The paper concludes that while many of the same influences are at work in the speech of both the university and high school learners, the precise influences appear to be modified with continued study and that many of these patterns are similar across variables within the university FSL learners’ speech.
