It is generally believed that the temperature and the velocity fields are highly coupled in compressible wall-bounded turbulence. In the present study, we employ a linear model, i.e. the two-dimensional spectral linear stochastic estimation (SLSE), to study this coupling from the perspective of the multi-scale energy-containing eddies. Particular attention is paid to the relevant statistical characteristics of the temperature field. The connections of the two fields are found to be varied with the wall-normal position in the boundary layer. In a nutshell, their entanglement is strongest in the near-wall region, and only the extreme thermal events cannot be captured by SLSE. In the logarithmic region, only the scales that correspond to the attached eddies and the very large-scale motions (VLSMs) are firmly coupled. The near-wall footprints of the former are organized in an additive manner and fulfil the predictions of the celebrated attached-eddy model. In the outer region, the two fields are linearly coupled only at the scales corresponding to VLSMs. These findings are demonstrated to be insensitive to the Mach number effects and ascribed to the similarity between the momentum and the heat transfer in compressible wall turbulence. It is also shown that it is the Reynolds number rather than Mach number that acts as a key similarity parameter in constructing their coupling. The framework built in the present study may pave a way for investigating the multi-physics coupling in turbulence, and reinforcing our analysing and modelling capability to the interrelated problems.

We report direct numerical simulations of the flow around a spanwise-flexible wing in forward flight. The simulations were performed at $Re=1000$ for wings of aspect ratio 2 and 4 undergoing a heaving and pitching motion at Strouhal number $St_c\approx 0.5$. We have varied the effective stiffness of the wing $\varPi _1$ while keeping the effective inertia constant, $\varPi _0=0.1$. It has been found that there is an optimal aerodynamic performance of the wing linked to a damped resonance phenomenon, that occurs when the imposed frequency of oscillation approaches the first natural frequency of the structure in the fluid, $\omega _{n,f}/\omega \approx 1$. In that situation, the time-averaged thrust is maximum, increasing by factor 2 with respect to the rigid case with an increase in propulsive efficiency of approximately 15 %. This enhanced aerodynamic performance results from the combination of larger effective angles of attack of the outboard wing sections and a delayed development of the leading edge vortex. With increasing flexibility beyond the resonant frequency, the aerodynamic performance drops significantly, in terms of both thrust production and propulsive efficiency. The cause of this drop lies in the increasing phase lag between the deflection of the wing and the heaving/pitching motion, which results in weaker leading edge vortices, negative effective angles of attack in the outboard sections of the wing, and drag generation in the first half of the stroke. Our results also show that flexible wings with the same $\omega _{n,f}/\omega$ but different aspect ratio have the same aerodynamic performance, emphasizing the importance of the structural properties of the wing for its aerodynamic performance.

We present new experiments of particle-laden turbulent fountains in a uniform horizontal crossflow, $u_a$, with momentum flux, $M_0$, and buoyancy flux, $B_0$. We use the ratio, $P$, of the crossflow speed to the characteristic fountain speed, $M_0^{-1/4}|B_0|^{1/2}$, and the ratio $U$, of the Stokes fall speed of the particles, $v_s$, to the characteristic fountain speed, to characterise the dynamics of a particle fountain in a crossflow. We find that the dynamics of these particle fountains can be categorised into three distinct regimes. In regime I when the fall speed of the particles is small in comparison with the characteristic fountain speed ($U\ll 1$), the particles remain well-coupled to the fountain fluid and the flow essentially behaves as a single-phase fountain in a crossflow. In the transitional regime II ($0.1< U<1$), when the fall speed of particles is comparable to the characteristic fountain speed, we observe some particles separating from the fountain fluid during the descent of the flow which leaves some fluid neutrally buoyant. As $U>1$ (regime III), we observe particles separating from the fountain as it rises from the source. We measure the average dispersal distance of the particles and the speed of the descending particles as a function of $U$ and $P$ and compare these results with models of a single-phase fountain in a crossflow. We build a regime diagram to describe the effect of $U$ and $P$ on the flow dynamics and consider our work in the context of deep-submarine volcanic eruptions.

Inspired by geological structures formed by magmatic intrusions that deform the Earth's crust, we investigate the elastohydrodynamic growth of a viscoplastic blister under an elastic sheet resting on a prewetted substrate. By combining experiments, scaling analysis and numerical simulations, we reveal new regimes for the elastoviscoplastic growth dynamics of the blister. The blister height and its apparent radius grow as $h(0,t) \sim t^{5/9}$ and $R(t) \sim t^{2/9}$ if the fluid pressure is set by bending of the sheet, and as $h(0,t) \sim t^{5/13}$ and $R(t) \sim t^{4/13}$ if the fluid pressure is set by stretching of the sheet. A plug-like flow inside the blister dictates its dynamics, whereas the blister takes a self-similar shape given by a balance of the fluid's yield stress and the pressure gradient induced by the deformation of the elastic sheet.

We perform a computational study on the effects of localized arc filament plasma actuator based control on the flow field and acoustics of a supersonic 2:1 aspect ratio rectangular jet. Post validation of the baseline jet, effects of control in the context of noise reduction are studied at experimentally guided forcing parameters, including frequencies $St=0.3, 1.0$ and $St=2.0$ with duty cycles of $20\,\%$ and $50\,\%$. In general, high-frequency forcing reduces noise in the downstream direction, with the actuator signature appearing mostly in the sideline direction. Here $St=1$, ${\rm DC}=50\,\%$ yields an optimum balance between peak noise reduction (of ${\sim }1.5$ dB) and actuator tones, with control being most effective on the major axis plane that bisects the shorter edges of the nozzle. Shear layer response to the most effective forcing includes generation of successive arrays of mutually interacting staggered lambda vortices, which eventually energize streamwise vortical elements. Causal mechanisms of noise mitigation are further elucidated as follows. First, the control reduces the energy within the supersonic phase speed regime of peak radiating frequencies by redistributing a part of it into a high-frequency band. Second, it enhances azimuthal percolation of energy into the first and second helical modes at frequencies where noise reduction is seen, thus weakening the radiatively efficient axisymmetric mode. Finally, sound-producing intermittent events in the jet are significantly reduced, thereby minimizing the high-intensity acoustic emissions. This small-perturbation-based control strategy results in only minor variations in the mean flow properties. However, reduced production and enhanced convection attenuate turbulent kinetic energy within the spreading shear layer in the controlled jet.

The perturbation response of small-scale shear layers in turbulence is investigated with direct numerical simulations (DNS). The analysis of shear layers in isotropic turbulence suggests that the typical layer thickness is about four times the Kolmogorov scale $\eta$. Response for sinusoidal perturbations is investigated for an isolated shear layer, which models a mean flow around the shear layers in turbulence. The vortex formation in the shear layer is optimally promoted by the perturbation whose wavelength divided by the layer thickness is about 7. These results indicate that the small-scale shear instability in turbulence is efficiently promoted by velocity fluctuations with a wavelength of about $30\eta$. Furthermore, DNS are carried out for decaying turbulence initialised by the artificially modified velocity field of isotropic turbulence. The vortex formation from shear layers is accelerated under the influence of external perturbations with the efficient wavelength to promote the instability. When velocity fluctuations with this wavelength are eliminated by a band-cut filter, the shear layers tend to persist for a long time without producing vortices. These behaviours affect the number of vortices in turbulence, which increases and decreases when velocity perturbations with the unstable wavelength of the instability are artificially amplified and damped, respectively. The increase in the number of vortices results in the enhancement of kinetic energy dissipation, enstrophy production and strain self-amplification. These results indicate that the perturbation response of shear layers is important in the small-scale dynamics of turbulence as well as the modulation of small-scale turbulent motions by external disturbance.

We investigate the intermittency of the coupling behaviour in screeching twin round supersonic jets at low Mach numbers across a range of nozzle spacings. Application of proper orthogonal decomposition combined with time-frequency wavelet analysis and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition shows that intermittency can manifest in twin jets as either a competition between the two symmetries, or the jets uncoupling and recoupling. The time scales on which symmetry switching occurs can vary strongly, ranging from $O(10^2)$ to $O(10^3)$ screech cycles. A transition from one symmetry to another is accompanied by a slight change in the screech frequency ranging from 0.30 % to 0.63 %. It was observed that complete uncoupling occurred only at the largest nozzle spacing of $s/D=6$ and at Mach numbers close to modal staging. When the jets are uncoupled they screech at slightly different frequencies, with a disparity of approximately 0.6 %. The coupling is particularly intermittent in the transition from the A1 to A2 branch, where the A2 mode is first observed, and tends toward steady coupling with increasing Mach number.

Cryogenic carbon capture (CCC) can preferentially desublimate $\text {CO}_2$ out of the flue gas. A widespread application of CCC requires a comprehensive understanding of $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation properties. This is, however, highly challenging due to the multiphysics behind it. This study proposes a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model to study $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation on a cooled cylinder surface during CCC. In two-dimensional (2-D) simulations, various $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation and capture behaviours are produced in response to different operation conditions, namely, gas velocity (Péclet number $\textit {Pe}$) and cylinder temperature (subcooling degree $\Delta T_{sub}$). As $\textit {Pe}$ increases or $\Delta T_{sub}$ decreases, the desublimation rate gradually becomes insufficient compared with the $\text {CO}_2$ supply via convection/diffusion. Correspondingly, the desublimated solid $\text {CO}_2$ layer (SCL) transforms from a loose (i.e. cluster-like, dendritic or incomplete) structure to a dense one. Four desublimation regimes are thus classified as diffusion-controlled, joint-controlled, convection-controlled and desublimation-controlled regimes. The joint-controlled regime shows quantitatively a desirable $\text {CO}_2$ capture performance: fast desublimation rate, high capture capacity, and full cylinder utilization. Regime distributions are summarized on a $\textit {Pe}$–$\Delta T_{sub}$ space to determine operation parameters for the joint-controlled regime. Moreover, three-dimensional simulations demonstrate four similar desublimation regimes, verifying the reliability of 2-D results. Under regimes with loose SCLs, however, the desublimation process shows an improved $\text {CO}_2$ capture performance in three dimensions. This is attributed to the enhanced availability of gas–solid interface and flow paths. This work develops a reliable LB model to study $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation, which can facilitate applications of CCC for mitigating climate change.

We consider a slowly condensing droplet levitating near the surface of an evaporating layer, and develop a mathematical model to describe diffusion, heat transfer and fluid flow in the system. The method of separation of variables in bipolar coordinates is used to obtain the series expansions for temperature, vapour concentration and the Stokes stream function. This framework allows us to determine temperature profiles and condensation rates at the surface of the droplet, and to calculate the upward force that allows the droplet to levitate. Somewhat counter-intuitively, condensation is found to be the strongest near the bottom of the droplet, which faces the hot liquid layer. The experimentally observed deviations from the classical law predicting the square of the radius to grow linearly in time are explained by the model. A spatially non-uniform phase change rate results in a contribution to the force not considered in previous studies, and comparable to droplet weight and the upward force calculated from the Stokes drag law. The levitation conditions are formulated accordingly, resulting in the prediction of levitation height as a function of droplet size without any fitting parameters. A simple criterion is formulated to define the parameter ranges in which levitation is possible. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data except that the model tends to slightly underpredict the levitation height.

This work describes the effects of waves on the hydroelastic response of a hydrofoil in fully wetted and ventilated flows. In the absence of vaporous cavitation (described in Part 2 of this paper series), shallow long-period non-breaking waves delayed ventilation inception because velocity fluctuations prevent the formation of a stably separated region of flow at the foil's leading edge. Aerated von Kármán vortex shedding occurred from the blunt trailing edge, producing vortex-induced vibration of the hydrofoil at a near-constant Strouhal number. Regular waves led to near sinusoidal oscillations of the load and deformations at the wave encounter frequency, while the mean response and the dynamic response at other frequency peaks corresponding to hydrodynamic and structural modes remained mostly unaffected. Significant dynamic load amplification was observed at a submerged aspect ratio of 2 for cases with low angles of attack because of coalescence between the second and third wetted structural modes; at high angles of attack, the amplitude of the load fluctuations and flow-induced vibrations reduced because energy was diverted away from the coalescence frequencies to the nearby vortex shedding frequency. In both calm water and wave conditions, transition from fully wetted to fully ventilated flow resulted in sudden and significant reduction in the load coefficients, as well as foil deflections. An impulse-like signature was observed in the time-frequency spectra during these transitions. In many of the cases, transition to fully ventilated flow also led to substantially reduced amplitudes in the load and deformation fluctuations.

We consider a special type of hydraulic jumps (internal bores) which, in the vertically bounded system of two immiscible fluids with slightly different densities, conserve not only the mass and impulse but also the circulation and energy. This is possible only at specific combinations of the upstream and downstream states. Two such combinations are identified with arbitrary upstream and downstream interface heights. The first has a cross-symmetry between the interface height and shear on both sides of the jump. This symmetry, which is due to the invariance of the two-layer shallow-water system with swapping the interface height and shear, ensures the automatic conservation of the impulse and energy as well as the continuity of characteristic velocities across the jump. The speed at which such jumps propagate is defined uniquely by the conservation of the mass and circulation. The other possibility is a marginally stable shear flow that can have fully conservative jumps with discontinuous characteristic velocities. Both types of conservative jumps are shown to represent a long-wave approximation to the so-called solibores that appear as smooth permanent-shape solutions in a weakly non-hydrostatic model. A new analytical solution for solibores is obtained and found to agree very well with the previous DNS results for partial-depth lock release flow. The finding that certain large-amplitude hydraulic jumps can be fully conservative, while most are not such even in the inviscid approximation, points towards the wave dispersion as a primary mechanism behind the lossy nature of internal bores.

A wall model for large-eddy simulation (LES) is proposed by devising the flow as a combination of building blocks. The core assumption of the model is that a finite set of simple canonical flows contains the essential physics to predict the wall shear stress in more complex scenarios. The model is constructed to predict zero/favourable/adverse mean pressure gradient wall turbulence, separation, statistically unsteady turbulence with mean flow three-dimensionality, and laminar flow. The approach is implemented using two types of artificial neural networks: a classifier, which identifies the contribution of each building block in the flow, and a predictor, which estimates the wall shear stress via a combination of the building-block flows. The training data are obtained directly from wall-modelled LES (WMLES) optimised to reproduce the correct mean quantities. This approach guarantees the consistency of the training data with the numerical discretisation and the gridding strategy of the flow solver. The output of the model is accompanied by a confidence score in the prediction that aids the detection of regions where the model underperforms. The model is validated in canonical flows (e.g. laminar/turbulent boundary layers, turbulent channels, turbulent Poiseuille–Couette flow, turbulent pipe) and two realistic aircraft configurations: the NASA Common Research Model High-lift and NASA Juncture Flow experiment. It is shown that the building-block-flow wall model outperforms (or matches) the predictions by an equilibrium wall model. It is also concluded that further improvements in WMLES should incorporate advances in subgrid-scale modelling to minimise error propagation to the wall model.

Many key environmental, industrial and energy processes rely on controlling fluid transport within subsurface porous media. These media are typically structurally heterogeneous, often with vertically layered strata of distinct permeabilities – leading to uneven partitioning of flow across strata, which can be undesirable. Here, using direct in situ visualization, we demonstrate that polymer additives can homogenize this flow by inducing a purely elastic flow instability that generates random spatio-temporal fluctuations and excess flow resistance in individual strata. In particular, we find that this instability arises at smaller imposed flow rates in higher-permeability strata, diverting flow towards lower-permeability strata and helping to homogenize the flow. Guided by the experiments, we develop a parallel-resistor model that quantitatively predicts the flow rate at which this homogenization is optimized for a given stratified medium. Thus, our work provides a new approach to homogenizing fluid and passive scalar transport in heterogeneous porous media.

The transition to turbulence in conduits is among the longest-standing problems in fluid mechanics. Challenges in producing or saving energy hinge on understanding promotion or suppression of turbulence. While a global picture based on an intrinsically 3-D subcritical mechanism is emerging for 3-D turbulence, subcritical turbulence is yet to even be observed when flows approach two dimensions, e.g. under intense rotation or magnetic fields. Here, stability analysis and direct numerical simulations demonstrate a subcritical quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2-D) transition from laminar flow to turbulence, via a radically different 2-D mechanism to the 3-D case, driven by nonlinear Tollmien–Schlichting waves. This alternative scenario calls for a new line of thought on the transition to turbulence and should inspire new strategies to control transition in rotating devices and nuclear fusion reactor blankets.

A two-dimensional (2-D) double-distribution lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is implemented to study isothermal drying of a colloidal suspension considering local nanoparticle effects. The two LBMs solve isothermal two-phase flow and nanoparticle transport, respectively. The three local nanoparticle effects on the fluid dynamics considered in this paper are viscosity increase, surface tension drop and local drying rate reduction. The proposed model is first validated by the study of the drying of a 2-D suspended colloidal droplet for two different Péclet numbers, where the evolution of the diameter squared agrees well with experimental results. The model is further validated looking at drying of a colloid in a 2-D capillary tube with two open ends. Compared with experimental results, the best agreement in terms of deposition profile and drying time is obtained when considering all three nanoparticle effects. Afterwards, we apply the model to investigate the complicated drying of a colloidal suspension in a 2-D porous asphalt, considering all three local nanoparticle effects. The drying dynamics, resultant nanoparticle transport, accumulation and deposition are first analysed for a base case. Then a parametric study is conducted varying the initial nanoparticle concentration, porous medium contact angle, nanoparticle contact angle and nanoparticle diffusion coefficient. The influence of these parameters on drying dynamics, drying rate, deposition process and final deposition configurations is analysed in detail, together with the mutual influence of local nanoparticle behaviour. Finally, a unified relation between the average drying rate and the studied parameters is proposed and verified, covering the full parameter ranges of simulations.

The wake of an isolated model-scale wind turbine is analysed in a set of inflow conditions having free stream turbulence intensity between 3 % and 12 %, and integral time scales in the range of 0.1–10 times the convective time scale based on the turbine diameter. It is observed that the wake generated by the turbine evolves more rapidly, with the onset of the wake evolution being closer to the turbine, for high turbulence intensity and low integral time scale flows, in accordance with literature, while flows at higher integral time scales result in a slow wake evolution, akin to that generated by low-turbulence inflow conditions despite the highly turbulent ambient condition. The delayed onset of the wake evolution is connected to the stability of the shear layer enveloping the near-wake, which is favoured for low-turbulence or high-integral time scale flows, and to the stability of the helical vortex set surrounding the wake, as this favours interaction events and prevents momentum exchange at the wake boundary which hinder wake evolution. The rate at which the velocity in the wake recovers to undisturbed conditions is instead analytically shown to be a function of the Reynolds shear stress at the wake centreline, an observation that is confirmed by measurements. The rate of production of Reynolds shear stress in the wake is then connected to the power harvested by the turbine to explain the differences between flows at equivalent turbulence intensity and different integral time scales. The wake recovery rate, and by extension the behaviour of the turbine wake in high-integral time scale flows, is seen to be a linear function of the free stream turbulence intensity for flows with Kolmogorov-like turbulence spectrum, in accordance with literature. This relation is seen not to hold for flows with different free stream turbulence spectral distribution; however, this trend is recovered if the contributions of low frequency velocity components to the turbulence intensity are ignored or filtered out from the computation.

In this note we provide an analytical proof of the zero helicity condition for systems governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The proof is based on the hydrodynamic interpretation of the GPE, and the direct use of Noether's theorem by applying Kleinert's multi-valued gauge theory. As a by-product we also demonstrate the conservation and quantization of the circulation for the GPE.

Water stuck in the ear is a common problem during showering, swimming or other water activities. Having water trapped in the ear canal for a long time can lead to ear infections and possibly result in hearing loss. A common strategy for emptying water from the ear canal is to shake the head, where high acceleration helps remove the water. In this present study, we rationalize the underlying mechanism of water ejection/removal from the ear canal by performing experiments and developing a stability theory. From the experiments, we measure the critical acceleration to remove the trapped water inside different sizes of canals. Our theoretical model, modified from the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, can explain the critical acceleration observed in experiments, which strongly depends on the radius of the ear canal. The resulting critical acceleration tends to increase, especially in smaller ear canals, which indicates that shaking heads for water removal can be more laborious and potentially threatening to children due to their small size of the ear canal compared with adults.

We propose a physical model to predict indirect noise generated by the acceleration of compositional inhomogeneities in nozzles with viscous dissipation (non-isentropic nozzles). First, we derive the quasi-one-dimensional equations from the conservation laws of multicomponent flows. Second, we validate the proposed model with the experimental data available in the literature for binary mixtures of four gases. Third, we calculate the nozzle transfer functions for different Helmholtz numbers and friction factors, in both subsonic and supersonic flows with/without shock waves. We show that friction and dissipation have a significant effect on the generation of indirect noise, for which the physical mechanism is identified and explained. Fourth, we find a semi-analytical solution with path integrals, which provides an asymptotic expansion with respect to the Helmholtz number. Fifth, we introduce the compositional-noise scaling factor, which is applied to quickly estimate compositional noise from the knowledge of only one single-component gas transfer function. The approximation error is less than $1\,\%$. The proposed low-order model provides accurate estimates of the transfer functions and physical insight into indirect noise for multicomponent gases. This opens up new possibilities to accurately predict, and understand, sound generation in gas turbines.

It is known that the water entry of a body with a recessed, cupped nose can suppress the splash and air cavity typically observed for solid body entry (Mathai, Govardhan & Arakeri, Appl. Phys. Lett., vol. 106, 2015, 064101). However, the interplay between the captive gas in the cup, the cavity and the splash is quite subtle and has not been thoroughly explored. Here we study the cavity and splash dynamics associated with the vertical water entry of cups and find a variety of regimes over a range of Weber numbers ($We_D$) and dimensionless cup depths. Our parameter space spans a transition between slow-developing cavities with long closure times (low $We_D$) to fast-sealing cavities (high $We_D$). An important dynamic event is the evacuation of trapped gas from within the cup, which drives the ensuing cavity and splash behaviour. Through modelling, we predict the conditions for which the evacuating gas inflates a cavity that opens to the atmosphere versus inflating a submerged cavity that suppresses air entrainment from above the surface. We also compare our cup water entry findings to the impact phenomena observed for flat disks, which entrap gas on the front surface similar to cups. In doing so, we reveal the sensitivity of disk splash and cavity behaviour to impact angle, and show that disks share a common regime with cups, in which a thin splash quickly seals on the body. We deduce the mechanisms by which increasing cup depth delays the cavity seal time in this regime. These findings reveal that cups may in fact promote or suppress cavity growth, depending on the cup depth and impact conditions.
