Ocean turbulence at meso- and submesocales affects the propagation of surface waves through refraction and scattering, inducing spatial modulations in significant wave height (SWH). We develop a theoretical framework that relates these modulations to the current that induces them. We exploit the asymptotic smallness of the ratio of typical current speed to wave group speed to derive a linear map – the U2H map – between surface current velocity and SWH anomaly. The U2H map is a convolution, non-local in space, expressible as a product in Fourier space by a factor independent of the magnitude of the wavenumber vector. Analytic expressions of the U2H map show how the SWH responds differently to the vortical and divergent parts of the current, and how the anisotropy of the wave spectrum is key to large current-induced SWH anomalies. We implement the U2H map numerically and test its predictions against WAVEWATCH III numerical simulations for both idealised and realistic current configurations.

In this experimental and numerical study, we revisit the question of the onset of the elastic regime in viscoelastic pinch-off. This is relevant to all modern filament thinning techniques, which aim to measure the extensional properties of low-viscosity polymer solutions. Examples are the slow retraction method (SRM) for capillary breakup extensional rheometry (CaBER), or the dripping method, in which a drop detaches from a nozzle. As part of these techniques, a stable liquid bridge is brought slowly to its stability threshold, where capillary-driven thinning starts. This thinning slows down dramatically at a critical radius $h_1$, marking the onset of the elasto-capillary regime, characterised by a filament of nearly uniform radius. While a theoretical scaling exists for this transition in the case of the classical step-strain CaBER protocol, where polymer chains stretch without relaxing during the fast plate separation, we show that this theory is not necessarily valid for a slow protocol such as the SRM. In that case, polymer chains start stretching (beyond their equilibrium coiled configuration) only when the bridge thinning rate becomes comparable to the inverse of their relaxation time. We derive a universal scaling for $h_1$, valid for both low- and high-viscosity polymer solutions. This scaling is validated by CaBER experiments with a slow plate separation protocol using different polymer solutions, plate diameters and sample volumes, as well as by numerical simulations using the FENE-P model.

Sea ice is a mushy layer, a porous material whose properties depend on the relative proportions of solid and liquid. The growth of sea ice is governed by heat transfer through the ice together with appropriate boundary conditions at the interfaces with the atmosphere and ocean. The salinity of sea ice has a major effect on its thermal properties so might naïvely be expected to have a major effect on its growth rate. However, previous studies observed a low sensitivity throughout the winter growth season. The goal of this study is to identify the controlling physical mechanisms that explain this observation. We develop a simplified quasi-static framework by applying a similarity transformation to the underlying heat equation and neglecting the explicit time dependence. We find three key processes controlling the sensitivity of growth rate to salinity. First, the trade-off between thermal conductivity and (latent) heat capacity leads to low sensitivity to salinity even at moderately high salinity and brine volume fraction. Second, the feedback on the temperature profile reduces the sensitivity relative to models that assume a linear profile, such as zero-layer Semtner models. Third, thicker ice has the opposite sensitivity of growth rate to salinity compared with thinner ice, sensitivities that counteract each other as the ice grows. Beyond its use in diagnosing these sensitivities, we show that the quasi-static approach offers a valuable sea-ice model of intermediate complexity between zero-layer Semtner models and full partial-differential-equation-based models such as Maykut–Untersteiner/Bitz–Lipscomb and mushy-layer models.

In this work, the stability and transition to turbulence over blunt flat plates with different leading-edge radii are investigated computationally. The benchmark experimental work for comparative studies is conducted by Borovoy et al. (AIAA J., vol. 60, 2022, pp. 497–507). The freestream Mach number is 5, the unit Reynolds number is $6\times 10^7$ m$^{-1}$, and the maximum nose-tip radius 3 mm exceeds the experimental reversal value. High-resolution numerical simulation and stability analysis are performed. Three-dimensional broadband perturbation is added on the far field boundary to initiate the transition. The highlight of this work is that the complete physical process is considered, including the three-dimensional receptivity, linear and nonlinear instabilities, and transition. The experimental reversal phenomenon is reproduced favourably in the numerical simulation for the first time. Linear stability analysis shows that unstable first and second modes are absent in the blunt-plate flows owing to the presence of the entropy layer, although these modes are evident in the sharp-leading-edge case. Therefore, the transition on the blunt plate is due to non-modal instabilities. Numerical results for all the blunt-plate cases reveal the formation of streamwise streaky structures downstream of the nose (stage I) and then the presence of intermittent turbulent spots in the transitional region (stage II). In stage I, a preferential spanwise wavelength approximately 0.9 mm is selected for all the nose-tip radii, and low-frequency components are dominant. In stage II, high-frequency secondary instabilities appear to grow, which participate in the eventual breakdown. By contrast, leading-edge streaks are not remarkable in the sharp-leading-edge case, where transition is induced by oblique first and Mack second modes. The transition reversal beyond the critical nose-tip radius arises from an increasing magnitude of the streaky response in the early stage, while the transition mechanism stays similar qualitatively.

Understanding the mechanism of hydrodynamic cloud cavitation is crucial to reducing noise, vibration and wear. Recent studies have clarified the physics of two distinct formation mechanisms of cloud cavitation. Ganesh et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 802, 2016, pp. 37–78) identified the propagation of bubbly shockwaves as a cloud detachment mechanism. Pelz et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 817, 2017, pp. 439–454) explained the influence of Reynolds number and cavitation number on asymptotic growth of the cavity sheet and its periodic shedding caused by re-entrant flow. In this paper the two mechanisms are set in relation to each other. For this, we show firstly that the transition from re-entrant flow to shockwave-driven cloud cavitation is given by a kinematic condition, namely the asymptotic sheet length equates to the chord length, $\hat {a}=L$. For $\hat {a}>L$ shockwave-driven cloud cavitation dominates. For $\hat {a}< L$ re-entrant flow-driven cloud cavitation dominates. As the cavitation number decreases, the closure region of the cavity sheet reaches the trailing edge of the hydrofoil, identifying the trailing edge as a trigger for condensation shockwaves, particularly as re-entrant flow-driven cavitation diminishes. Since the sheet length is an implicit function of the cavitation number, the kinematic condition $\hat {a}/L=1$ results in a critical cavitation number ${\sigma _\mathrm {II,III}}$ that is calculated analytically and validated by experiments. Secondly, we derive the relationship between the Strouhal number and the asymptotic sheet length for re-entrant flow-driven cloud cavitation. The model presented here is thoroughly validated by experiments.

The instantaneous structure of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) subjected to freestream turbulence (FST) is investigated at several streamwise locations downstream of an active turbulence-generating grid. Using planar particle image velocimetry, three grid sequences are tested at four streamwise locations with FST intensities up to 10.9 %. A low-turbulence reference case is included for comparison. A novel method is proposed to separate the instantaneous TBL and FST flows by identifying a distinct interface for each realisation using probability density functions of the vorticity field. Two alternative approaches are used to define the interfaces, based on either constant velocity contour lines or constant vorticity magnitude contour lines. The former is found to highlight the momentum events in the velocity fields, whereas the latter outlines the vortical features of the flow. Regardless of the interface choice, when faced with FST, the interface moves closer to the wall on average, and its location fluctuates more. When FST is present, the shear and mean spanwise vorticity magnitudes increase on the TBL side of the interface. Uniform momentum zones (UMZs) beneath the velocity interfaces are identified. In the presence of FST, UMZs located closer to the wall appear to be compressed, resulting in fewer identified UMZs. Moving downstream, the FST intensity decays while the TBL develops. As a result, many characteristics of the TBL recover to an undisturbed state, with the interface moving away from the wall, vorticity and turbulent fluctuations returning to their natural state undisturbed by FST and the number of detected UMZs increasing.

We demonstrate the first successful non-invasive stabilisation of nonlinear travelling waves in a straight cylindrical pipe using time-delayed feedback control working in various symmetric subspaces. By using an approximate linear stability analysis and by analysing the frequency-domain effect of the control using transfer functions, we find that solutions with well-separated unstable eigenfrequencies can have narrow windows of stabilising time delays. To mitigate this issue we employ a ‘multiple time-delayed feedback’ approach, where several control terms are included to attenuate a broad range of unstable eigenfrequencies. We implement a gradient descent method to dynamically adjust the gain functions in order to reduce the need for tuning a high-dimensional parameter space. This results in a novel control method where the properties of the target state are not needed in advance, and speculative guesses can result in robust stabilisation. This enables travelling waves to be stabilised from generic turbulent states and unknown travelling waves to be obtained in highly symmetric subspaces.

It is widely believed that statistical closure theories for dynamical systems provide statistics equivalent to those of the governing dynamical equations from which the former are derived. Here, we demonstrate counterexamples in the context of the widely used mean-field quasi-linear approximation applied to both deterministic and stochastic two-dimensional fluid dynamical systems. We compare statistics of numerical simulations of a quasi-linear model (QL) with statistics obtained by direct statistical simulation via a cumulant expansion closed at second order (CE2). We observe that although CE2 is an exact statistical closure for QL dynamics, its predictions can disagree with the statistics of the QL solution for identical parameter values. These disagreements are attributed to instabilities, which we term rank instabilities, of the second cumulant dynamics within CE2 that are unavailable in the QL equations.

Electrophoretic characterization of nano- and micro-metre scaled bubbles and drops is increasingly important in environmental and health sciences. Despite more than a hundred years of study, the interpretation of bubble electrophoresis data remains an unresolved fundamental problem that bridges fluid mechanics and interfacial science. This paper examines, from a theoretical perspective, how the electrophoretic mobility of small drops and bubbles responds to the interfacial kinetic-exchange rate and interfacial-charge mobility: factors that have been largely overlooked, but which provide new insights on the interpretation of $\zeta$-potentials, which are routinely used to assess surface charge density. A variety of outcomes are demonstrated, each reflecting subtle balances of hydrodynamic and electrical forces, modulated by interfacial thermodynamics and transport. Among the findings is that irreversibly bound charge with low interfacial mobility furnishes rigid-sphere behaviour; whereas interfacial charge with high mobility produces the characteristically high electrophoretic mobilities of non-conducting, uniformly charged fluid spheres. Outcomes are more complex when drops and bubbles have interfacial charge that seeks local equilibrium with the immediately adjacent electrolyte. For example, the present model shows that interfacial-charge mobility regularizes the singular behaviour predicted by theories for fluid spheres bearing high, perfectly uniform surface charge.

Using an analogy between elastic and magnetic effects, Lin et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 1000, 2024, R3) use viscoelastic Taylor–Couette flow (TCF) to examine the origin of turbulent mixing in accretion disks. Through direct numerical simulations, the authors find that, unlike the Newtonian case with a similar configuration, turbulence is sustained even at the lowest Reynolds numbers examined and that turbulent mixing is provided through elastic and non-hydrodynamic contributions. By comparing the torque scaling laws obtained with those in magnetized TCF, the authors are able to further support the elastic–magnetic analogy. These findings open new avenues for understanding angular momentum transport and instability mechanisms in both laboratory and astrophysical contexts.

We carry out direct numerical simulations (DNS) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow subjected to radial system rotation, examining a broad range of rotational speed and Reynolds number. In response to the imposed system rotation, strong secondary motions arise in the form of streamwise-aligned counter-rotating eddies, which engage significantly with the boundary layer, exerting a notable influence on the turbulent flow. At high rotation numbers, a Taylor–Proudman region appears, marked by a constant mean axial velocity along the rotation axis. As rotation increases, local flow relaminarisation takes place starting at the suction side of the pipe, ultimately resulting in full relaminarisation when the rotation number is higher than unity. In this regime the near-wall region of the flow exhibits the typical hallmark of laminar Ekman layers, whose strength varies with the azimuthal position along the pipe perimeter. A predictive analytical formula for frictional drag is derived for this ultimate high rotation which accurately reproduces the DNS data. The behaviour of friction is more complex to predict at low-to-intermediate rotation numbers owing to concurrent effects of viscosity, turbulence, secondary motions and rotation, which we quantify in an extended version of the Fukagata–Iwamoto–Kasagi identity.

We present the first nonlinear results on the problem of non-rotating thermal convection in an internally heated full sphere. A nonlinear stability analysis by the energy method yields that, at least for no-slip boundary conditions, the critical Rayleigh numbers for linear stability and nonlinear stability coincide. We then explore different ranges of the parameter regime using direct numerical simulations. We first report on the system behaviour for a fixed Prandtl number of unity and both stress-free and no-slip boundary conditions up to very high forcing, reaching Rayleigh number $Ra=2\times 10^{12}$, approximately 250 million times the critical value ($Ra_c$) for the onset of convection under no-slip conditions. For both boundary conditions, we observe a scaling for the advective heat transfer measured by the Nusselt number $Nu$ close to $Nu \sim Ra^{1/4}$. This is consistent with a scaling prediction that we formulate analogously to the classical scaling in Rayleigh–Bénard convection. We then investigate the Prandtl number dependence at low to intermediate forcing for stress-free boundary conditions in the ranges $0.1 \leq Pr \leq 30$ and $Ra_c=3091\leq Ra \leq 3\times 10^5 \approx 100Ra_c$. We find five distinct dynamical regimes depending on the Prandtl number, describe each regime individually and issue heuristic interpretations of the system behaviour where possible.

Turbulent flows in three dimensions are characterized by the transport of energy from large to small scales through the energy cascade. Since the small scales are the result of the nonlinear dynamics across the scales, they are often thought of as universal and independent of the large scales. However, as famously remarked by Landau, sufficiently slow variations of the large scales should nonetheless be expected to impact small-scale statistics. Such variations, often termed large-scale intermittency, are pervasive in experiments and even in simulations, while differing from flow to flow. Here, we evaluate the impact of temporal large-scale fluctuations on velocity, vorticity and acceleration statistics by introducing controlled sinusoidal variations of the energy injection rate into direct numerical simulations of turbulence. We find that slow variations can have a strong impact on flow statistics, raising the flatness of the considered quantities. We discern three contributions to the increased flatness, which we model by superpositions of statistically stationary flows. Overall, our work demonstrates how large-scale intermittency needs to be taken into account in order to ensure comparability of statistical results in turbulence.

Green water loads on prismatic obstacles (representing topside structures) mounted on the raised deck of a simplified vessel are investigated using computational fluid dynamics simulations and physical model testing with emphasis on examining different structure shapes, orientation angles and relative structure size. For each scenario investigated, several flow features are identified that characterize the green water interaction with the structure and influence loads, namely delayed flow diversion, formation of a vertical jet, scattered wave formation and the development of complex wake patterns. Comparing across structures, these interactions are more pronounced for blunt objects, and the associated force impulse is larger. For example, a cube with flow at normal incidence is found to experience approximately twice the force impulse of a circular cylinder of the same projected area. Equally, rotation of the cube leads to reduced run-up height and streamwise force on the structure. To explain these trends, a theoretical model based on Newtonian flow theory is adopted. This model provides an estimate of the streamwise force exerted on obstacles in high-Froude-number flows and shows good agreement with the numerical results when the flow is supercritical, shallow (small water depth relative to structure width) and the structure is tall (large structure height relative to water depth). Despite some limitations, the model should provide an efficient force prediction tool for practical use in design.

This study identifies two previously unrecognised screech modes in non-axisymmetric jets. Spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) of ultra-high-speed schlieren images reveals a bi-axial flapping mode in a rectangular jet and a quasi-helical mode in an elliptical jet. To educe the complex three-dimensional structure of these new modes, SPOD is performed on datasets from different viewing perspectives, produced by rotating the nozzle with respect to the schlieren path to an azimuthal angle $\theta$. The bi-axial flapping mode is strongly antisymmetric from any perspective. However, the SPOD eigenvalue at the screech frequency ($\lambda _s$) varies with $\theta$ and the axial distance of the SPOD domain from the nozzle lip. This mode most closely resembles a flapping mode in the minor-axis plane close to the nozzle lip and a wagging mode in the major-axis plane further downstream. This transition from flapping to wagging at the same frequency correlates with the axis switching defined by the shock-cell structure in the mean flow. The quasi-helical mode in the elliptical jet is characterised by an antisymmetric structure present in the SPOD spatial modes whose eigenvalue $\lambda _s$ is insensitive to both $\theta$ and the axial domain. These findings indicate that the spatial evolution of the mean flow in non-axisymmetric jets may allow them to support a range of additional screech modes that differ significantly from those supported by the original three-dimensional shape of the jet.

The three-dimensional flow field past an I-shaped dual-step cylinder has been obtained by numerical integration of the Navier–Stokes equations at Reynolds number ($Re_D$) 150. The I-shaped cylinder consisted of two large-diameter (D) cylinders with a small-diameter (d) cylinder in between. With a view to exploring the vortex dynamics and structural loads, simulations were performed for eight different lengths $l$ of the small cylinder, varied from $l/D=10$ to 0.2 for a fixed diameter ratio $D/d=2$. When the length of the small cylinder is sufficiently large, the wake behind the I-shaped cylinder is similar to the wake behind the single-step cylinder (Tian et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 891, 2020, A24). As the small cylinder length decreases, the enhanced interactions between the two steps make the present wake deviate from the wake of the single-step cylinder, leading to four different wake modes distinguished by different combinations of vortex cells. The physical formation mechanisms were analysed in terms of the vortex dynamics. Besides the wake flow, the streamwise vortices around the I-shaped step cylinder were also investigated. A pair of edge vortices and a junction vortex were identified for $l/D \geq ~1$. When the gap between the two steps becomes too small, $l/D \leq ~0.2$, the junction vortex disappears, and only a pair of edge vortices exists. Varying the distance between the two steps strongly affects the structural loads (drag and lift) along the I-shaped cylinder. The dependence of the loads on $l/D$ was readily explained by the different wake modes.

A liquid drop impacting a rigid substrate undergoes deformation and spreading due to normal reaction forces, which are counteracted by surface tension. On a non-wetting substrate, the drop subsequently retracts and takes off. Our recent work (Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 129, 2022, 104501) revealed two peaks in the temporal evolution of the normal force $F(t)$ – one at impact and another at jump-off. The second peak coincides with a Worthington jet formation, which vanishes at high viscosities due to increased viscous dissipation affecting flow focusing. In this article, using experiments, direct numerical simulations and scaling arguments, we characterize both the peak amplitude $F_1$ at impact and the one at takeoff ($F_2$) and elucidate their dependency on the control parameters: the Weber number $We$ (dimensionless impact kinetic energy) and the Ohnesorge number $Oh$ (dimensionless viscosity). The first peak amplitude $F_1$ and the time $t_1$ to reach it depend on inertial time scales for low viscosity liquids, remaining nearly constant for viscosities up to 100 times that of water. For high viscosity liquids, we balance the rate of change in kinetic energy with viscous dissipation to obtain new scaling laws: $F_1/F_\rho \sim \sqrt {Oh}$ and $t_1/\tau _\rho \sim 1/\sqrt {Oh}$, where $F_\rho$ and $\tau _\rho$ are the inertial force and time scales, respectively, which are consistent with our data. The time $t_2$ at which the amplitude $F_2$ appears is set by the inertiocapillary time scale $\tau _\gamma$, independent of both the viscosity and the impact velocity of the drop. However, these properties dictate the magnitude of this amplitude.

Despite the extensive research on bubble collapse near rigid walls, the bubble collapse dynamics in the presence of shear flow near a rigid wall is poorly understood. We conduct direct simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations to explore the bubble dynamics and pressures during bubble collapse near a rigid, flat wall under linear shear flow conditions. We examine the dependence of the bubble collapse morphology and wall pressures on the initial bubble location and shear rate. We find that shear distorts the bubble, generating two re-entrant jets – one developing from the side opposite to the mean flow and the other from the far end toward the wall. Upon impact of the jet on the opposite side of the bubble, water-hammer shocks are produced, which propagate outward and interact with the convoluted bubble shape. The shock stretches the bubble towards the wall, resulting in a closer impact location for the jet originating from the far end compared with the case with no shear flow. The water-hammer pressure location can be approximated as the theoretical distance travelled by a particle initialised at the bubble centre with the corresponding constant shear flow velocity. The maximum wall pressures can thus be predicted by considering the distance between the far jet impingement location and the wall along the wall-normal direction. As the shear rate is increased, the maximum wall pressure increases, although only marginally. We determine the critical initial stand-off distance from the wall at which the bubble morphology is shear dominated, i.e. characterised by converging re-entrant jets.

We derive a mathematical model for steady, unidirectional, thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamic (TEMHD) flow of liquid lithium along a solid metal trench, subject to an imposed heat flux. We use a finite-element method implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics to solve the problem numerically, demonstrating how the fluid velocity, induced magnetic field and temperature change depending on the key physical and geometrical parameters. The observed flow structures are elucidated by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions to obtain approximate solutions in the limit where the Hartmann number is large and the trench walls are thin.

We introduce a new model equation for Stokes gravity waves based on conformal transformations of Euler's equations. The local version of the model equation is relevant for the dynamics of shallow water waves. It allows us to characterize the travelling periodic waves both in the case of smooth and peaked waves and to solve the existence problem exactly, albeit not in elementary functions. Spectral stability of smooth waves with respect to co-periodic perturbations is proven analytically based on the exact count of eigenvalues in a constrained spectral problem.
