A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for a Poisson binomial random variable to be stochastically larger (or smaller) than a binomial random variable. It is then used to deal with the stochastic comparisons of order statistics from heterogeneous populations with those from a homogeneous population. The result has obvious applications in the stochastic comparisons of lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems having independent components.

In this short note we derive Sengupta's (1989) invariance relation using elementary arguments and we show that Miyazawa's (1983), (1985) conservation principle, on which Sengupta's proof is based, admits the Palm inversion formula as a consequence. This contrasts with Miyazawa's first proof based on the inversion formula. We also show that Neveu's (1976) cycle formula is a direct consequence of Miyazawa's principle.

Several authors have recently discussed the asymptotic properties of stochastic populations which diffuse randomly throughout a given region. Sevast'yanov ([8], [9]) has investigated the extinction probability of a Markovian population in a compact region with an absorbing boundary, his analysis being in terms of “generation times”. Adke and Moyal have considered the spatial dispersion of a population which multiplies according to a simple time-dependent birth-and-death process and undergoes Gaussian diffusion on the real line ([2] and [3]) or on a finite interval with reflecting boundaries [1]. A serious limitation in Adke and Moyal's asymptotic results is that they are conditional upon a finite number of survivors. Moyal [7] has also obtained some basic formulae for a Markovian population diffusing through a general space.

For a strong Markov process on the line with continuous paths the Karlin–McGregor determinant formula of coincidence probabilities for multiple particle systems is extended to allow the individual component processes to start at variable times and run for variable durations. The extended formula is applied to a variety of combinatorial problems including counts of non-crossing paths in the plane with variable start and end points, dominance orderings, numbers of dominated majorization orderings, and time-inhomogeneous random walks.

We consider an increasing supercritical branching process in a random environment and obtain bounds on the Laplace transform and distribution function of the limiting random variable. There are two possibilities that can be distinguished depending on the nature of the component distributions of the environment. If the minimum family size of each is 1, the growth will be as a power depending on a parameter α. If the minimum family sizes of some are greater than 1, it will be exponential, depending on a parameter γ. We obtain bounds on the distribution function analogous to those found for the simple Galton-Watson case. It is not possible to obtain exact estimates and we are only able to obtain bounds to within ε of the parameters.

The Laplace transform of the probability distribution of the end-to-end delay in tandem networks is obtained where the first and/or second queue are G-queues, i.e. they have negative arrivals. For the most general case the method is based on the solution of a boundary value problem on a closed contour in the complex plane, which itself reduces to the solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. We also consider the dependence or independence of the sojourn times at each queue in the two special cases where only one of the queues is a G-queue, the other having no negative arrivals.

We consider a fixed size Markov chain model which suffers losses and admits controlled recruitment. The family of n-step maintainable structures is described geometrically and examined.

By means of a general intensity conservation principle for stationary processes with imbedded marked point processes (PMP) stochastic inequalities are proved between customer-stationary and time-stationary characteristics of queueing systems G/G/s/r.

We consider a discrete-time financial market model with L1 risky asset price process subject to proportional transaction costs. In this general setting, using a dual martingale representation we provide sufficient conditions for the super-replication cost to coincide with the replication cost. Next, we study the convergence problem in a stationary binomial model as the time step tends to zero, keeping the proportional transaction costs fixed. We derive lower and upper bounds for the limit of the super-replication cost. In the case of European call options and for a unit initial holding in the risky asset, the upper and lower bounds are equal. This result also holds for the replication cost of European call options. This is evidence (but not a proof) against the common opinion that the replication cost is infinite in a continuous-time model.

The extended block replacement policy with used items as advocated by Tango (1978) uses used items of age T only although the policy creates used items of lower age. In this note we modify Tango's policy so as to make use of all used items created by the policy.

In this paper we find the distribution of the area X of a randomly chosen triangle within a given triangle T. An extension of the classical Crofton technique is used in setting up a sequence of differential equations to obtain the desired distribution.

We discuss the quasi-stationary distribution obtained when a simple birth and death process is conditioned on never exceeding K. An application of this model to one-dimensional circuit-switched communication networks is described, and some special cases examined.

In this paper we consider a single-server queue with Lévy input and, in particular, its workload process (Qt)t≥0, with a focus on the correlation structure. With the correlation function defined as r(t) := cov(Q0, Qt) / var(Q0) (assuming that the workload process is in stationarity at time 0), we first determine its transform ∫0∞r(t)e-ϑtdt. This expression allows us to prove that r(·) is positive, decreasing, and convex, relying on the machinery of completely monotone functions. We also show that r(·) can be represented as the complementary distribution function of a specific random variable. These results are used to compute the asymptotics of r(t), for large t, for the cases of light-tailed and heavy-tailed Lévy inputs.

The limiting behaviour of the convex hull of a sample in is studied using the support function. Results like that of Eddy and Gale (1981) are proved without the condition of spherical symmetry from that paper.

Consider a sequence {Xk, k ≥ 1} of random variables on (−∞, ∞). Results on the asymptotic tail probabilities of the quantities , and S(n) = max0 ≤ k ≤ nSk, with X0 = 0 and n ≥ 1, are well known in the case where the random variables are independent with a heavy-tailed (subexponential) distribution. In this paper we investigate the validity of these results under more general assumptions. We consider extensions under the assumptions of having long-tailed distributions (the class L) and having the class D ∩ L, where D is the class of distribution functions with dominatedly varying tails. Some results are also given in the case where Xk, k ≥ 1, are not necessarily identically distributed and/or independent.

The order statistics of a set of independent gamma variables, in general not identically distributed, may serve as a basis for ordering players in a hypothetical game. An alternative formulation in terms of negative binomial variables leads to an expression for the probability that the random gammas are in a given order. This expression may contain rather many terms and some approximations are discussed — firstly as the gamma parameters αi tend to equality with all ni the same, and secondly when the probability of an inversion is small. In another interpretation the probabilities discussed arise in the statement of confidence limits for the ratios of population variances, and here the inversion probability is small enough usually that lower and upper bounds may be given for the probability that the sample variances occur in their expected order. These bounds are calculated from the probability that two variables are in expected order, and for gamma variables this probability is obtained from the F-distribution.

In a previous paper (Leslie (1967)) the distribution of recurrence times for a particular set of success-failure patterns on a sequence of Bernoulli trials was investigated. We now consider the analogous events in continuous time and obtain the Laplace Transform (L.T.) of the distribution of recurrence times; numerical inversion yields the distribution functions.

Stationary processes which are defined on the points of a square lattice and are Markovian in various senses are considered. It is shown that a certain assumption of linearity of regression forces the spectral distribution to be of a certain explicit form, and that given this form Gaussian processes of this kind are easily constructed. Certain non-Gaussian processes satisfying the various Markovian properties are also constructed and the difference from nearest-neighbour systems emphasized. It is conjectured, but not proved, that the assumption of linearity of regression also implies Gaussianity.

For several queueing systems, sufficient conditions are given ensuring that from the coincidence of some time-stationary and customer-stationary characteristics of the number of customers in the system such as idle or loss probabilities it follows that the arrival process is Poisson.

A discrete Galton–Watson process is modified by an absorbing process, which, within each generation, eliminates a subset of the living particles without leaving offspring. The absorbing process will be only roughly specified by its expected efficiency on the associated process. We give a sharp sufficient condition for the joint process to be extinguished with probability one and give, after an easy generalization, an example for possible biomedical applications.
