Precise characterization of concealed person-worn objects will speed up the passenger screening process by reducing the rate of nuisance alarms, while also enhancing the airport security imaging systems. This paper presents an automatic, real-time method for wideband millimeter-wave radar identification of the nominal surface contours of the human body – even with affixed foreign objects or when a segment of the body cross-section is not captured by the radar – without relying on the body's bilateral symmetry. The developed method is verified experimentally when applied to the actual images generated by a laboratory airport scanning prototype developed recently by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Our method uses the noisy collection of radar cross-section reflectivity data to extract the main contours and estimates the nominal body surface cross-sections through fitting a small-term Fourier series of circumferential variation. This is a necessary step for accurate characterizing of concealed terrorist threat objects affixed to the body.

A circularly polarized ring cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (ring-CDRA) of wideband impedance bandwidth is presented in this article. The proposed ring CDRA consist of an inverted rectangular (tilted rectangular) shaped aperture and inverted L-shaped slotted microstrip feed line. The tilted rectangular shaped aperture and inverted L-shaped microstrip feed line generate two-hybrid mode HEM11δ and HEM12δ while ring CDRA and slotted microstrip feed line are used for the enhancement of impedance bandwidth. The proposed ring CDRA is resonating between 6.08 and 12.2 GHz with 66.95% (6120 MHz) impedance bandwidth. The axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 6.99% (780 MHz) is obtained between 10.76 and 11.54 GHz with a minimum AR value of 0.2 dB at a frequency of 11 GHz. The proposed geometry of ring CDRA has been validated with measurement performed by VNA and anechoic chamber. The operating range of the proposed radiator is useful for different applications in X-band.

This paper aims to present some outcomes from a European Space Agency (ESA) Technology Research Programme (TRP) project on R&D of new design techniques, concepts, and filtering configurations for tunable IF (intermediate frequency) filters with a compact footprint, wide bandwidth tuning range (covering from 49 to 478 MHz at f0 = 1 GHz) as well as equivalent high-Q performance (i.e. low insertion loss variation and high selectivity by using low-Q resonators). In order to obtain a wide tuning range, the proposed filtering configuration utilizes a new tuning technique that only necessitates control of coupling values with simple DC control circuits, without the need of tuning the electrical length of resonators to avoid deviating the center frequency. Furthermore, in order to achieve the equivalent high-Q performance, a novel lossy technique by using a centrally resistor-loaded half-wavelength resonator is adopted. For the proof of concept, a six-pole prototype filter is designed, fabricated, and tested.

This paper presents a gradient-based optimization method for interference suppression of linear arrays by controlling the electrical parameters of each array element, including the amplitude-only and phase-only. Gradient-based optimization algorithm (GOA), as an efficient optimization algorithm, is applied to the optimization problem of the anti-interference arrays that is generally solved by the evolutionary algorithms. The goal of this method is to maximize the main beam gain while minimizing the peak sidelobe level (PSLL) together with the null constraint. To control the nulls precisely and synthesize the radiation pattern accurately, the full-wave method of moments is used to consider the mutual coupling among the array elements rigorously. The searching efficiency is improved greatly because the gradient (sensitivity) information is used in the algorithm for solving the optimization problem. The sensitivities of the design objective and the constraint function with respect to the design variables are analytically derived and the optimization problems are solved by using GOA. The results of the GOA can produce the desired null at the specific positions, minimize the PSLL, and greatly shorten the computation time compared with the often-used non-gradient method such as genetic algorithm and cuckoo search algorithm.

We propose a novel Fabry–Pérot (FP) antenna consisting of a checkered polarization-conversion metasurface (PCM), corner-cut square patch antennas, and sandwiched compounds. The proposed antenna achieves low radar-cross-section (RCS), high gain, and wideband circular polarization (CP). The corner-cut square patch antennas facilitate high reflectivity, satisfactory transmission magnitude, and the desired phase difference. An embedded metal between two rings of substrate contributes to reducing cross-polarization, improving transmission efficiency, enhancing bandwidth, and reducing RCS. Following simulations, we fabricated a prototype of the proposed antenna and tested its performance. Measurements from the simulation and prototype tests were similar within a reasonable margin of error. Compared with alternative antennas, our proposed FP antenna offers high gain, wideband CP, low cost, a low RCS, and a lower profile.

In this paper, a metasurface (MS)-based multi-functional electromagnetic (EM) structure is proposed to realize its two different applications, namely absorption and radiation. The proposed structure is based on periodic arrays of disk-shaped metallic patches and split rings with four embedded lumped resistors. The metallic vias are inserted from top to bottom to connect the disk-shaped patches with a feeding network designed on the bottom layer where two p-i-n switches are embedded in the feeding network to alter the different functions of the proposed structure. For free space incident plan wave, the designed structure works as an absorber when the p-i-n switches are switched OFF. The absorber operates over a frequency band from 6.2 GHz to 8.2 GHz and unchanged over an incident angle from 0° to 30° for both TE and TM polarized incident waves. The same structure also works as a low scattering and high gain radiator when the p-i-n switches are turned ON and radiate within absorbing frequency band, i.e. from 7.5 to 8.0 GHz. The designed structure is fabricated and experimentally verified for EM absorption and radiation applications.

A compact circularly polarized (CP) patch antenna is presented for modern communication systems. The prospective antenna consists of a microstrip-line inset-fed rectangular patch and a defected ground plane. A rotated rectangular slot and a modified electric-inductive-capacitive (m-ELC) resonator are introduced in the patch and the ground plane to achieve multiband behaviour. A corner of the radiating patch is truncated and an arrow-shaped stub is introduced for generating circular polarization. The physical area of the substrate is 0.26λ0 × 0.22λ0, and the radiator size is 0.16λ0 × 0.14λ0, where λ0 is the free-space wavelength estimated at the lowest frequency. The measured (S11≤-10 dB) bandwidths of the antenna are 80 MHz (3.58%) at 2.23 GHz, 75 MHz (2.64%) at 2.84 GHz, 80 MHz (2.50%) at 3.19 GHz, and 70 MHz (1.82%) at 3.83 GHz. The measured 3-dB axial ratio bandwidths are 40 MHz (1.41%), 100 MHz (3.12%), and 60 MHz (1.57%) at 2.84, 3.20 and 3.82 GHz, respectively. The proposed planar antenna design does not need dual-feed or multi-layered patches for achieving multiple CP bands. It offers easy integration with the printed circuits of the communication systems.

In this paper, a coplanar waveguide-fed ultra-wideband-multiple-input and multiple-output (UWB-MIMO) antenna with a novel stub for isolation has been presented. The dimensions of the proposed antenna are 18 × 22 × 1.6 mm3. The proposed antenna is design on an FR4 substrate and simulated in CST studio. The |S11| of the presented MIMO antenna is less than −10 dB between 2.8 and 13 GHz with an impedance bandwidth of 10.2 GHz. The envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) is less than 0.007 and diversity gain (DG) is greater than 9.97 dB. The proposed UWB-MIMO antenna is analyzed in terms of isolation, reflection coefficient, current distribution, ECC, DG, peak gain, multiplexing efficiency, and radiation pattern.

This research paper introduces a ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple input multiple output (MIMO)/diversity antenna with three rejected bands using one compact electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure. The suggested EBG structure rejects three bands at WiMAX, WLAN, and the X-band within the passband of the UWB antenna. To achieve compactness in the conventional EBG structure, two via and square slots are introduced. This structure contributes to better impedance matching by using tapered feedline and slots in the radiating patch. To improve the isolation among all four compact UWB monopoles, decoupling strips are extended from the ground plane. Furthermore, the |S21| is below 17 dB in between the antenna elements and the envelope correlation coefficient is below 0.5, which are tolerable values within the UWB range. Furthermore, different MIMO/diversity characteristics are also discussed. An FR-4 substrate with dimensions of 38 × 45 × 1.6 mm3 is used for the fabrication of the suggested structure.

This paper reports a bi-port, wideband, parasitic-fed, single/shared patch antenna with enhanced interport isolation for 2.4 GHz in-band full duplex (IBFD) applications. The employed parasitic feeding provides comparatively the wider impedance bandwidth and better gain for the presented antenna. The improved self-interference cancellation (SIC) levels across the required bandwidth are obtained through differentially-driven receive (Rx) mode operation. The differential Rx operation performs effective cancellation of in-band self-interference (SI) through signal inversion mechanism to achieve the additional isolation on the top of the intrinsic isolation of polarization diversity. The validation model for the presented antenna features ≥88 dB peak isolation between the dual-polarized Tx and Rx ports. In addition, the measured Tx–Rx isolation for prototype is >70 dB across the 10 dB return loss bandwidth of 100 MHz (2.42–2.52 GHz). The measured gain for each mode is better than 7.0 dBi. The novelty of this work is that compared to previously reported designs, the presented antenna offers wider impedance bandwidth and improved SIC levels in addition to superior gain performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first single/shared patch antenna which provides better than 70 dB interport isolation across the 10 dB return loss bandwidth of 100 MHz along with 7.0 dBi gain for Tx/Rx modes.

A wideband staircase pattern defected ground monopole antenna integrated with an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) reflector has been proposed for C-band (4–8 GHz) and ITU band (8.01–8.5 GHz) applications. The integrated antenna consists of a staircase antenna at top, a 2 × 2 AMC reflector at the bottom and an air substrate as gap between them. The AMC offers 18.5% ± 90° reflection phase bandwidth from 6.10 to 7.32 GHz. The AMC layer has achieved mu-negative properties in the designated band. The AMC proffers polarization independent behavior in the respective frequency band depicting robustness in AMC reflection phase characteristics. The integrated antenna has offered a wide impedance bandwidth of 2.78 GHz (42.8% at 6.5 GHz and 34.1% at 8.15 GHz) due to the defected ground monopole. The integration of wideband AMC beneath the staircase monopole antenna alters the out of phase radiation to in-phase planer pattern which enhances the peak gain up to 9.7 dB. It reduces the 1-g averaged specific absorption rate to 0.223 and 0.324 W/kg at the two designated bands. The structure maintains almost similar bandwidth and gain due to artificial human body loading.

In this article, a meander line-shaped pentaband (2.18–2.24, 2.38–2.46, 2.65–2.70, 3.10–3.32, 3.38–3.46 GHz) four-element multiple-input–multiple-output antenna is presented. The proposed antenna is also circularly polarized in two bands (at 2.2 and 2.4 GHz) with dual-polarization like right-handed at port 1 or 3 and left-handed at port 2 or 4, which is widely used for mobile satellite services (MSS) and Internet of Things applications. This antenna is designed and fabricated with compact size 50 × 70 × 1.6 mm3 on the FR-4 substrate with good diversity performance in pentaband. Simulated results of antenna-like return loss, isolation, and parameters-related diversity have also been tested experimentally in a controlled environment, which is within the permissible limit. The designed antenna will be appropriate for MSS, industrial scientific and medical (ISM), broadband radio services and educational broadband services, WiMAX radio location services, and amateur radio services. Meanwhile, specific absorption rate of the designed antenna has been examined in an empirical environment for the Fresnel radiating near-field applications.

This article presents a novel miniaturized (0.105λ0 × 0.105λ0) flexible complementary frequency selective surfaces (CFSS) structure with sharp band edge selectivity and very high angular stability. To explore two diverse applications as a passband and stopband filter, a novel complementary convoluted square loop (CCSL) type structure has been designed and investigated on ultrathin dielectric material of thickness 0.0023λ0. The second-order wide controllable passband with fractional bandwidth of 19.23% (−3 dB) and remarkably wide stopband of 64.7% (−10 dB) and 54.8% (−20 dB) respectively have been achieved by using a cascaded resonating structure which is composed of asymmetrical meandered CCSL array, arranged on two ultrathin dielectric layers with air foam separation. This particular format would lead to sharp band edge selectivity with steep roll-off (72.43 dB/GHz) and an excellent passband selectivity factor (0.731). An equivalent lumped LC circuit in conjunction with the transmission line model has also been adopted to comprehend the physical mechanism of the proposed single layer and double layer structures. Further, better passband and stopband angular stability at an oblique incident angle of 45° and the bending characteristics have also been investigated thoroughly for the proposed flexible CFSS to check their employability in different conformal structures with WiMAX passband and WLAN stopband application.

This study investigates a low-profile circularly polarized (CP) antenna using coplanar waveguide feeding. Rectangular-shaped slots and an inverted L-shaped slit are entrenched into the ground plane to enhance the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. Furthermore, the antenna is implemented with six elliptical electromagnetic band gap structures on its substrate to enhance the −10 dB return loss bandwidth and also to generate CP waves. The experimental and theoretical results closely match each other and indicate that a simple and compact design antenna with dimensions of 0.317λ0 × 0.317λ0 × 0.023λ0(λ0 is the operating wavelength at 4.74 GHz in free space) achieves 36.9% (3.91–5.68 GHz) of the −10 dB return loss bandwidth and 9.98% (4.09–4.52 GHz) of the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth, thus making it a favorable entrant for radio altimeter and wireless avionics infra-communication systems.

This paper presents a dual-band 1 × 4 antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) array with high gain to operate over a dual-frequency band that covers the 5G frequency spectrum. The gain is enhanced by employing a dielectric lens (DL). The AVA array consists of four radiating patch elements, corrugations, DL, and array feeding network on the top side. The bottom side contains four radiating patches which are the mirror images of top radiating patches. The designed AVA contains 1 × 4 array antenna elements with a DL that is operating in the ranges of 24.59–24.98 and 27.06–29 GHz. The dimensions of the designed antenna are 97.2 mm × 71.2 mm × 0.8 mm. For the improvement in gain and impedance matching at the dual-band frequency, corrugation and feeding network techniques are used. The gain obtained is about 8–12 dBi. AVA array is tested after fabrication and the measured results are reliable with the simulation results.

A mathematical model of variable inclination continuous transverse stub (VICTS) antenna for low sidelobe design is proposed in this paper. VICTS antenna is an antenna with continuous transverse stubs on the parallel-plate waveguide and additional branches attached to the transverse stubs to generate radiation. The antenna using this technique has high aperture efficiency and keeps a significant solution for high-gain antenna. However, the sidelobe level (SLL) of this antenna is relatively high and increases continuously as the pitch angle decreases. This paper presents a fast calculation model for the SLL of VICTS antennas using leaky-wave theory and antenna array theory. The full-wave simulation results and model calculation results are in good agreement, so this model can be used for SLL suppression of VICTS antennas in different frequency bands. By controlling the aperture field distribution to be tapered, the SLL is suppressed to − 23.7 dB using this mathematical model.

A class of multi-band planar diplexer with sub-sets of frequency-contiguous transmission bands is reported. Such a radio frequency (RF) device is suitable for lightweight high-frequency receivers aimed at multi-band/multi-purpose mobile satellite communications systems. It consists of two channelizing filters, each of them being made up of the in-series cascade connection of replicas of a constituent multi-passband/multi-embedded-stopband filtering stage. This building filtering stage defines a multi-passband transfer function for each channel, in which each main transmission band is split into various sub-passbands by the multi-stopband part. In this manner, each split passband gives rise to several sub-passbands that are imbricated with their counterpart ones of the other channel. The theoretical RF operational principles of the proposed multi-band diplexer approach with sub-sets of imbricated passbands are detailed by means of a coupling–routing–diagram formalism. Besides, the generation of additional transmission zeros in each channelizing filter for higher-selectivity realizations by exploiting cross-coupling techniques into it is also detailed. Furthermore, for experimental demonstration purposes, a microstrip proof-of-concept prototype of second-order octo-band diplexer in the frequency range of 1.5–2.5 GHz that consists of two quad-band channelizing filters with pairs of imbricated passbands is developed and characterized.

The paper proposes a system consisting of novel programmable system on chip (PSoC)-controlled phase shifters which in turn guides the beam of an antenna array attached to it. Four antennae forming an array receive individual inputs from the programmable phase shifters (IC 2484). The input to the PSoC-based phase shifter is provided from an optimized 1:4 Wilkinson power divider. The antenna consists of an inverted L-shaped dipole on the front and two mirrored inverted L-shaped dipoles mounted on a rectangular conductive structure on the back which resonates in the ISM/Wi-Fi band (2.40–2.48 GHz). The power divider is designed to provide the feed to the phase shifter using a beamforming network while ensuring good isolation among the ports. The power divider has measured S11, S21, S31, S41, and S51 to be −14, −6.25, −6.31, −6.28, and −6.31 dB, respectively at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The ingenious controller is designed in-house using a PSoC microcontroller to regulate the control voltage of individual phase shifter IC and generate progressive phase shifts. To validate the calibration of the in-house designed control circuit, the phased array is simulated using $s_p^2$ touchstone file of IC 2484. This designed control circuit exhibits low insertion loss close to −8.5 dB, voltage standing wave ratio of 1.58:1, and reflection coefficient (S11) is −14.36 dB at 2.45 GHz. Low insertion loss variations confirm that the phased-array antenna gives equal amplitude and phase. The beamforming radiation patterns for different scan angles (30, 60, and 90°) for experimental and simulated phased-array antenna are matched accurately showing the accuracy of the control circuit designed. The average experimental and simulated gain is 13.03 and 13.48 dBi respectively. The in-house designed controller overcomes the primary limitations associated with the present electromechanical phased array such as cost weight, size, power consumption, and complexity in design which limits the use of a phased array to military applications only. The current study with novel design and enhanced performance makes the system worthy of the practical use of phased-array antennas for common society at large.

This paper presents a 60 GHz connected slots linear-phased array feeding a high-gain semi-symmetric lens antenna. This design provides high gain, broadband, and beam-steering capabilities for gigabit rate access and backhaul communications. The connected slots antenna array (CSAA) is excited at 16× equidistant points which not only yields spatial power combining but also allows the progressive phase changes to steer the beam in ±45° in azimuth plane. To characterize the CSAA-fed lens antenna, four different power splitters are fabricated which steer the main beam in 0, 15, 30, and 45°. The lens is designed in a way to overcome the scan loss and get comparatively higher gain when beam is steered away from the broadside. The measured results show 25.4 dBi maximum gain with 3 dB gain bandwidth covering the full band 57–66 GHz whereas 3 dB beam-steering range is ±45° for all frequencies. Besides, the half power beamwidth is 6 and 10° in elevation (E-plane) and azimuth plane (H-plane), respectively.

Compressed sensing allows recovery of image signals using a portion of data – a technique that has drastically revolutionized the field of through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). This technique can be accomplished through nonlinear methods, including convex programming and greedy iterative algorithms. However, such (nonlinear) methods increase the computational cost at the sensing and reconstruction stages, thus limiting the application of TWRI in delicate practical tasks (e.g. military operations and rescue missions) that demand fast response times. Motivated by this limitation, the current work introduces the use of a numerical optimization algorithm, called Limited Memory Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (LBFGS), to the TWRI framework to lower image reconstruction time. LBFGS, a well-known Quasi-Newton algorithm, has traditionally been applied to solve large scale optimization problems. Despite its potential applications, this algorithm has not been extensively applied in TWRI. Therefore, guided by LBFGS and using the Euclidean norm, we employed the regularized least square method to solve the cost function of the TWRI problem. Simulation results show that our method reduces the computational time by 87% relative to the classical method, even under situations of increased number of targets or large data volume. Moreover, the results show that the proposed method remains robust when applied to noisy environment.
