In this paper, a semi-flexible 2 × 1 array antenna is proposed with epoxy glass fiber and graphene as patch and ground, respectively. Microstrip patch antenna with a center parasitic patch of half-wavelength and slot in the radiating patch have been incorporated for the bandwidth enhancement in order of 79.56% (2.21–5.13 GHz). The antenna has an overall size of 0.30λ × 0.24λ at a lower frequency of operation (2.45 GHz). The incorporation of slotted Graphene in radiating element leads to a wideband regime with satisfactory gain values of 2.73 and 3.744 dBi at 2.40 and 4.0 GHz, respectively. Antenna radiation efficiency in the range of 78% with linear polarization makes the antenna appropriate for WLAN band and smart wireless devices application.

In this paper, a tri-band metamaterial (MTM) loaded compact monopole antenna is proposed. In the first step of design procedure, a rectangular monopole antenna is improved by replacing the corresponding rectangular patch with a ring resonator. As a result, the first obtained operating frequency is decreased from 2.95 to 2.46 GHz. Then, this operating frequency is reduced to 2.02 GHz utilizing an MTM geometry in the antenna structure. The geometry parameters of the proposed antenna are optimized to provide the applicability for 3G, WLAN, and WiMAX applications. The impedance bandwidths of 600, 1080, and 220 MHz are obtained at 2.02–2.62, 3.48–4.56, and 5.12–5.34 GHz, respectively. Moreover, the equivalent circuit of the proposed antenna has been extracted. The proposed equivalent circuit model is validated through a comparison with corresponding simulation results. The proposed antenna is compact, low profile, via-less, and provides easy fabrication. Considering the first resonance frequency, a compactness of 32% is achieved in comparison to the corresponding unloaded monopole antenna.

Electromagnetic inverse-scattering problems (ISPs) are concerned with determining the properties of an unknown object using measured scattered fields. ISPs are often highly nonlinear, causing the problem to be very difficult to address. In addition, the reconstruction images of different optimization methods are distorted which leads to inaccurate reconstruction results. To alleviate these issues, we propose a new linear model solution of generative adversarial network-based (LM-GAN) inspired by generative adversarial networks (GAN). Two sub-networks are trained alternately in the adversarial framework. A linear deep iterative network as a generative network captures the spatial distribution of the data, and a discriminative network estimates the probability of a sample from the training data. Numerical results validate that LM-GAN has admirable fidelity and accuracy when reconstructing complex scatterers.

A circularly polarized high-power antenna with higher-order mode excitation (TM01) is presented in this paper. The proposed structure consists of metal plates placed on the conical horn antenna's aperture for achieving TM01 to circular polarized TE11 mode conversion at the output. The structure is simulated on CST Microwave Studio. The designed antenna exhibits high gain and a directive radiation pattern. The axial ratio of the proposed structure is below 3 dB. The simulated and measured reflection coefficient for TM01 mode excitation is below −10 dB over a frequency range of 2.95–3.13 GHz. The structure is purely metallic, and the calculated high-power microwave (HPM) capability is up to the MW level. The proposed antenna is helpful for portable HPM systems.

Advanced telecommunication systems are moving toward a high data transfer rate and wider bandwidth. The 5G communication network has recently been implemented for such aims. However, 5G networks operating with high operating frequency (typically above 20 GHz) could lead to impairments because of the atmospheric phenomena mainly precipitation and especially heavy rain. To address this, an optimum rain fade margin for the 5G network in Peninsular Malaysia is proposed using 77 sites of the rain-gauge network, which convert 1-h rain data to 1-min rain data by means of the international telecommunication union recommendation (ITU-R) P.837-7 model. Long-term rain attenuation statistics are obtained from ITU-R P.530-17 and the synthetic storm technique. The predicted rain attenuation is also presented in monthly statistics and in rain attenuation contour maps. The analysis showed that at 99.99% of link availability, the optimum rain fade margin operating at 26 GHz link should be in the range of 6.50 to 10 dB and 7 to 11 dB at 28 GHz link for a 5G network. Such information is useful for network operators and system engineers for the operation of 5G terrestrial microwave links in heavy rain regions.

This paper presents a review of the recent advances in the field of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filters, with particular emphasis on the techniques adopted to increase the out-of-band rejection of the filters and on the miniaturization strategies. After an overview of classical approaches to introduce transmission zeros in SIW filters, a number of recently introduced techniques are presented. In particular, the use of specially implemented extracted-poles topologies and of pre-filters is described, discussed, and compared. For each of these techniques, numerical and experimental results are reported for validation.

A dual-band 10-port multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna array for 5G smartphone is proposed. Each antenna in the MIMO system can work from 3.4 to 3.6 GHz and 5 to 6 GHz with 10 dB (2:1 VSWR) impedance bandwidth. Nevertheless, for a 3:1 VSWR, the antenna operates from 3.3 to 3.8 GHz and 4.67 to 6.24 GHz. The MIMO system is formed by making 10 seven-shaped coupled fed slot antenna elements excited at two different resonant modes and integrated into the system circuit board. By implementing the spatial and polarization diversity techniques, high isolation better than 28 dB between any pair of antenna elements is achieved. The proposed 10-port MIMO antenna array is fabricated and measured. Significant radiation efficiency is obtained, ranging from 65 to 82% for both bands. The antenna gain in the required operating band is substantial, around 3–3.8 dBi. Further, the MIMO parameters such as envelope correlation co-efficient, channel capacity, and total active reflection co-efficient are calculated. The antenna's robustness is estimated by analyzing the user hand effects and specific absorption rate (SAR). The measured results are well agreed with the simulated results.

Fifth-generation technology is not fully deployed in the world wireless communication till date. Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band needs to be used due to plenty of available bandwidth and for achieving the goals of 5G such as greater data rate, ultra-high-speed video broadcasting, low latency services, and many more. Wideband antenna is required for 5G applications to access the high speed, low latency Internet services, and ultra-high-definition video streaming. Various bandwidth enhancement techniques have been reported by the researchers for microstrip antennas operating at microwave bands. High link losses, small wavelength, limited coverage, and environmental losses are the major challenges of mm-wave band. To mitigate these issues and satisfy 5G standard, an antenna with wide bandwidth, high gain, narrow steerable beam, high isolation, low side lobe levels, and multiband characteristics is required. Modifications in conventional antenna design techniques are required to achieve broader bandwidth along with stable radiation characteristics, improved gain, and low side lobe levels at mm-wave frequencies. This paper presents the survey of various bandwidth enhancement techniques which has been used in the 5G antennas designed by researchers. Reviews of some wideband 5G antennas with their performance comparisons are also discussed.

A compact four-element ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with dual polarization and dual-notched capabilities was developed and fabricated. The MIMO antenna is composed of four orthogonally placed half-cutting UWB antenna elements. This orthogonal placement improves the isolation. Furthermore, an L-shaped slot and a continuous bending slot are etched to realize the band-rejection function in the WiMAX and WLAN bands. The result shows that the antenna achieved operating bands of 2.9–16.5 GHz (140.2%, S11 < −10 dB), fully covering the UWB (3.1–10.6 GHz). The port isolation is greater than 23 dB in the frequency band of interest, excluding two rejected bands. Moreover, the MIMO antenna has excellent diversity performance, such as a low envelope correlation coefficient (<0.004), high diversity gain (approximately 10 dB), and good omnidirectional radiation characteristics.

The μ-negative metamaterial (MNG) two-element MIMO antenna design was proposed in this article for WiMAX (2.5–2.8 GHz), WLAN (3.2–5.9 GHz), and ITU band (8.15−8.25 GHz) applications. The first design of the MIMO antenna operates at 2.7 and 4.9 GHz frequencies. In order to reduce the mutual coupling, a defective ground structure is used. For further isolation improvement, an MNG unit cell is placed in between the two radiating elements at a distance of 10 mm. The designed antenna elements have better than −23 dB coupling isolation between the two radiating elements. Moreover, with MNG an additional frequency of 8.2 GHz is obtained, which is useful for ITU band applications. The proposed antenna bandwidth is expanded by 19% in the lower operational band, 20% in the second operational band, and 32% in the higher frequency band with the MNG unit cell. From the analysis, the proposed antenna is suitable for WiMAX/WLAN/ITU band applications because of its low enveloped correlation coefficient, and highest directive gain and low mutual coupling between the radiating components. The proposed antenna was simulated, fabricated, and measured with the help of the Schwarz ZVL vector network analyzer and anechoic chamber. Both measured and simulated results are highly accurate and highly recommended for WiMAX/WLAN/ITU bands.

In this research study, a compact dual-polarized co-radiator ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with improved impedance bandwidth and isolation is proposed for wireless applications. The designed co-radiator has an overall area of 0.3λo × 0.3λo mm2 (where, λo is free space wavelength corresponding to the lower cut-off frequency, i.e., 3.1 GHz). The proposed resonator comprises of a hybrid geometry which is created with the combinations of a circular-shaped patch, a square, and two rectangular stubs. It is centrally aligned between two 50 Ω micro-strip feed lines that are positioned orthogonal to each other. Further, the modified ground plane is attached with the end-loaded line which provides broadband isolation over entire UWB frequency band. The simulated results of the proposed antenna exhibit wideband characteristics with impedance bandwidth of 3.1–16.9 GHz with minimum isolation of −15 dB. Moreover, all the radiation performance parameters are analyzed and discussed. Some important diversity parameters such as envelope correlation coefficient, mean effective gain, effective diversity gain, and channel capacity loss have also been evaluated. Furthermore, all the measured results of proposed antenna agree well with the simulated results which make the proposed antenna a suitable candidate for UWB-MIMO wireless applications.

This paper describes the outcome of the “Small user TErminal multi band DIplexer” project where the goal is the validation of novel SMD-compliant planar diplexer. The real application scenario concerns an integrated multi-band radio terminal for ground-segment satellite links. The advantageous and novel approach involves the simultaneous use of three different well-established concepts: a microstrip low-pass filter, a substrate integrated waveguide high-pass filter, and the thin-film technology as manufacturing process. The proposed topology applied to a planar alumina-based design guarantees a 15 × 11.1 mm2 footprint and the best integration with surface mountable soldering process over standard PCB technology. Achieved performance and resilience to environmental toughness are suitable for consumer-oriented satellite links or man-pack applications. The designed component targets the Ku 10.7–12.75 (RX) and Ka 27.5–30 (TX) GHz bands but the layout can be easily tuned across the spectrum. The described solution has been manufactured and validated. Thermal cycling and mechanical tests have been carried out to prove the high technology readiness level of the proposed device.

An effective method is proposed to excite the untilted edge slot antennas. In the proposed method, two T-shaped wires are placed at both sides of each untilted slot. Two legs of each T-shaped wire are connected to the waveguide walls, while the third leg is open. One of the T-shaped wires connects the upper broad wall of the waveguide to the narrow wall of the waveguide which contains the slots. Similarly, the other T-shaped wires connect the lower broad wall of the waveguide to the narrow wall of the waveguide that contains the slots. The phase reversal between the adjacent slots can be accomplished by changing the orientation of the T-shaped wires. It is shown that the arm lengths of the connected wires can be employed as a parameter to control the radiated power by the slots. Furthermore, the arm lengths of the open wires can be selected properly to control the dynamic range of the equivalent normalized susceptance associated with each untilted slot antenna. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed antennas, two linear arrays consisting of 11 slots have been designed, implemented, and tested. The simulation and the measurement results of the designed arrays show that for the proposed untilted edge slot antennas, the dynamic range of the equivalent normalized susceptance is improved significantly which leads to a straightforward design process with no requirement to resort to any time-consuming tuning process.

Optimization of hyperparameters of artificial neural network (ANN) usually involves a trial and error approach which is not only computationally expensive but also fails to predict a near-optimal solution most of the time. To design a better optimized ANN model, evolutionary algorithms are widely utilized to determine hyperparameters. This work proposes hyperparameters optimization of the ANN model using an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm. The different ANN hyperparameters considered are a number of hidden layers, neurons in each hidden layer, activation function, and training function. The proposed technique is validated using inverse modeling of two meander line electromagnetic bandgap unit cells and a slotted ultra-wideband antenna loaded with EBG structures. Three other evolutionary algorithms viz. hybrid PSO, conventional PSO, and genetic algorithm are also adopted for the hyperparameter optimization of the ANN models for comparative analysis. Performances of all the models are evaluated using quantitative assessment parameters viz. mean square error, mean absolute percentage deviation, and coefficient of determination (R2). The comparative investigation establishes the accurate and efficient prediction capability of the ANN models tuned using IPSO compared to other evolutionary algorithms.

In this study, a dipole antenna is designed for real-time damage assessment, humidity, and temperature monitoring in reinforced and non-reinforced concrete structures. The antenna-based sensor is embedded into reinforced and non-reinforced concrete beams to assess electromagnetic measurements. Reflection parameter S11 in dB values and resonant frequencies of the embedded antenna are evaluated to detect damage, humidity, and temperature changes. The exploratory results show that as deformation increases in reinforced concrete, resonance frequency values decrease and S11 values increase. The load and resonance frequency values showed very close trends as deformation increases in the beam. In water content sensing experiments, the S11 in dB values of the antenna decrease as the humidity increases for concrete specimens while the resonance frequency values increase as the humidity increases for the reinforced concrete specimen. Elevated temperature sensing experimental results show that the resonance frequency values of the antenna decrease as the temperature of the specimen increases for concrete specimens while the S11 in dB values increase as the temperature of the specimen increases for reinforced concrete specimen.

In this article, we present two efficient closed-form models to examine thoroughly the dependence of resonant frequency, quality factor, probe reactance, input impedance, bandwidth, and gain on parameters such as patch radius, probe location, substrate electrical parameters, and air gap of a coax probe-fed circular patch antenna. The implementation of these models is very easy and the computation cost is very low. The proposed models show excellent agreements with experimental and simulation results. We have also investigated experimentally the gain patterns of a suspended substrate circular patch antenna.

Low probability of intercept (LPI) radars utilize specially designed waveforms for intra-pulse modulation and hence LPI radars cannot be easily intercepted by passive receivers. The waveforms include linear frequency modulation, nonlinear frequency modulation, polyphase, and polytime codes. The advantages of LPI radar are wide bandwidth, frequency variability, low power, and the ability to hide their emissions. On the other hand, the main purpose of intercept receiver is to classify and estimate the parameters of the waveforms even when the signals are contaminated with noise. Precise measurement of the parameters will provide necessary information about a threat to the radar so that the electronic attack or electronic warfare support system could take instantaneous counter action against the enemy. In this work, noisy polyphase and polytime coded waveforms are analyzed using cyclostationary (CS) algorithm. To improve the signal quality, the noisy signal is pre-processed using two types of denoising filters. The denoised signal is analyzed using CS techniques and the coefficients of spectral correlation density are computed. With this method, modulation parameters of nine types of waveforms up to −12 dB signal-to-noise ratio with an accuracy of better than 95% are extracted. When compared with literature values, it is found that the results are superior.

In this paper, a compact stepped slot antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is proposed. A very small size and UWB bandwidth operation are achieved by integrating a stepped slot in the back side of the antenna. This stepped slot is excited by using a 50 Ω-feed line in the top side of the antenna. The antenna is characterized by an impedance bandwidth between 3.05 GHz and more than 12 GHz. The dimensions of the antenna are 17 mm × 8 mm × 1.27 mm, which leads to the most compact size compared with other works in the literature. The integrated stepped slot is divided into additional elementary slots, where each elementary slot has a matching point. Adding these elementary slots allows to increase further the operating bandwidth. The radiation pattern of the compact stepped slot antenna is omnidirectional in the H-plane and bidirectional in the E-plane. The measurement results agree well with the simulated ones in terms of impedance matching and radiation pattern.

In this work, a printed coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed single band antenna based on expanded graphite material is introduced. The proposed antenna is based on a CPW-monopole antenna with a U-shape conductor strip connected with the ground. Expanded graphite, a grade of graphene, is used as a conductor to design the uniplanar antenna over a flexible paper substrate. The antenna is designed for 2.4 GHz applications. The antenna design procedures are discussed. The material preparation and analysis are illustrated. Finally, the antenna fabrication and measurements of the reflection coefficient are discussed. The measured antenna reflection coefficient agrees with the simulated one, ensuring the antenna validity for serving the required applications. The radiation antenna parameters are discussed and simulated results from two-simulation software are included for comparison. The antenna has a simulated gain of 4 dBi and simulated efficiency of around 90% at 2.4 GHz.

The paper presents a numerical simulation of the propagation characteristics of symmetric E-type and H-type waves in microwave circular shielded waveguide with radially inhomogeneous dielectric filling. Using the modified Galerkin method, the calculation of a circular two-layer shielded waveguide was carried out, as a result of which the distribution of the electromagnetic field of the waveguide with linear and parabolic distribution of permeability was determined. The results obtained using the modified Galerkin method were compared with the results obtained using the classical partial domain method, which agree well enough.
