For $k\geq 2$ and a nonzero integer n, a generalised Diophantine m-tuple with property $D_k(n)$ is a set of m positive integers $S = \{a_1,a_2,\ldots , a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j + n$ is a kth power for $1\leq i< j\leq m$. Define $M_k(n):= \text {sup}\{|S| : S$ having property $D_k(n)\}$. Dixit et al. [‘Generalised Diophantine m-tuples’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150(4) (2022), 1455–1465] proved that $M_k(n)=O(\log n)$, for a fixed k, as n varies. In this paper, we obtain effective upper bounds on $M_k(n)$. In particular, we show that for $k\geq 2$, $M_k(n) \leq 3\,\phi (k) \log n$ if n is sufficiently large compared to k.

Let G be a finite group and $\mathrm {Irr}(G)$ the set of all irreducible complex characters of G. Define the codegree of $\chi \in \mathrm {Irr}(G)$ as $\mathrm {cod}(\chi ):={|G:\mathrm {ker}(\chi ) |}/{\chi (1)}$ and denote by $\mathrm {cod}(G):=\{\mathrm {cod}(\chi ) \mid \chi \in \mathrm {Irr}(G)\}$ the codegree set of G. Let H be one of the $26$ sporadic simple groups. We show that H is determined up to isomorphism by cod$(H)$.

Let G be a semiabelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field K of prime characteristic. We describe the intersection of a subvariety X of G with a finitely generated subgroup of $G(K)$.

We introduce some generalisations of the Euler–Kronecker constant of a number field and study their arithmetic nature.

A natural operation on numerical semigroups is taking a quotient by a positive integer. If $\mathcal {S}$ is a quotient of a numerical semigroup with k generators, we call $\mathcal {S}$ a k-quotient. We give a necessary condition for a given numerical semigroup $\mathcal {S}$ to be a k-quotient and present, for each $k \ge 3$, the first known family of numerical semigroups that cannot be written as a k-quotient. We also examine the probability that a randomly selected numerical semigroup with k generators is a k-quotient.

Formulas evaluating differences of integer partitions according to the parity of the parts are referred to as Legendre theorems. In this paper we give some formulas of Legendre type for overpartitions.

We derive an explicit formula for the N-point correlation $F_N(s)$ of the van der Corput sequence in base $2$ for all $N \in \mathbb {N}$ and $s \geq 0$. The formula can be evaluated without explicit knowledge about the elements of the van der Corput sequence. This constitutes the first example of an exact closed-form expression of $F_N(s)$ for all $N \in \mathbb {N}$ and all $s \geq 0$ which does not require explicit knowledge about the involved sequence. Moreover, it can be immediately read off that $\lim _{N \to \infty } F_N(s)$ exists only for $0 \leq s \leq 1/2$.

Let $f(X) \in {\mathbb Z}[X]$ be a polynomial of degree $d \ge 2$ without multiple roots and let ${\mathcal F}(N)$ be the set of Farey fractions of order N. We use bounds for some new character sums and the square-sieve to obtain upper bounds, pointwise and on average, on the number of fields ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt {f(r)})$ for $r\in {\mathcal F}(N)$, with a given discriminant.

In 2019, Andrews and Newman [‘Partitions and the minimal excludant’, Ann. Comb. 23(2) (2019), 249–254] introduced the arithmetic function $\sigma \textrm {mex}(n)$, which denotes the sum of minimal excludants over all the partitions of n. Baruah et al. [‘A refinement of a result of Andrews and Newman on the sum of minimal excludants’, Ramanujan J., to appear] showed that the sum of minimal excludants over all the partitions of n is the same as the number of partition pairs of n into distinct parts. They proved three congruences modulo $4$ and $8$ for two functions appearing in this refinement and conjectured two further congruences modulo $8$ and $16$. We confirm these two conjectures by using q-series manipulations and modular forms.

We study the arithmeticity of $\mathbb {C}$-Fuchsian subgroups of some nonarithmetic lattices constructed by Deraux et al. [‘New non-arithmetic complex hyperbolic lattices’, Invent. Math. 203 (2016), 681–771]. Our results give an answer to a question raised by Wells [Hybrid Subgroups of Complex Hyperbolic Isometries, Doctoral thesis, Arizona State University, 2019].

We prove an upper bound for the sum of values of the ideal class zeta-function over nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. The same result for the Dedekind zeta-function is also obtained. This may shed light on some unproved cases of the general Dedekind conjecture.

For any real polynomial $p(x)$ of even degree k, Shapiro [‘Problems around polynomials: the good, the bad and the ugly$\ldots $’, Arnold Math. J. 1(1) (2015), 91–99] proposed the conjecture that the sum of the number of real zeros of the two polynomials $(k-1)(p{'}(x))^{2}-kp(x)p{"}(x)$ and $p(x)$ is larger than 0. We prove that the conjecture is true except in one case: when the polynomial $p(x)$ has no real zeros, the derivative polynomial $p{'}(x)$ has one real simple zero, that is, $p{'}(x)=C(x)(x-w)$, where $C(x)$ is a polynomial with $C(w)\ne 0$, and the polynomial $(k-1)(C(x))^2(x-w)^{2}-kp(x)C{'}(x)(x-w)-kC(x)p(x)$ has no real zeros.

Let $\gcd (n_{1},\ldots ,n_{k})$ denote the greatest common divisor of positive integers $n_{1},\ldots ,n_{k}$ and let $\phi $ be the Euler totient function. For any real number $x>3$ and any integer $k\geq 2$, we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of $\sum _{n_{1}\ldots n_{k}\leq x}\phi (\gcd (n_{1},\ldots ,n_{k})). $

We study plane curves over finite fields whose tangent lines at smooth $\mathbb {F}_q$-points together cover all the points of $\mathbb {P}^2(\mathbb {F}_q)$.

The sharp bound for the third Hankel determinant for the coefficients of the inverse function of convex functions is obtained, thus answering a recent conjecture concerning invariance of coefficient functionals for convex functions.

We extend the notion of polynomial integration over an arbitrary circle C in the Euclidean geometry over general fields $\mathbb {F}$ of characteristic zero as a normalised $\mathbb {F}$-linear functional on $\mathbb {F}[\alpha _1, \alpha _2]$ that maps polynomials that evaluate to zero on C to zero and is $\mathrm {SO}(2,\mathbb {F})$-invariant. This allows us to not only build a purely algebraic integration theory in an elementary way, but also give the super Catalan numbers

an algebraic interpretation in terms of values of this algebraic integral over some circle applied to the monomials $\alpha _1^{2m}\alpha _2^{2n}$.

Assume that G is a finite group, N is a nontrivial normal subgroup of G and p is an odd prime. Let $\mathrm{Irr}_p(G)=\{\chi \in \mathrm{Irr}(G) : \chi (1)=1~\mathrm{or}~ p \mid \chi (1)\}$ and $\mathrm{Irr}_p(G|N)=\{\chi \in \mathrm{Irr}_p(G) : N \not \leq \mathrm{ker}\,\chi \}$. The average character degree of irreducible characters of $\mathrm{Irr}_p(G)$ and the average character degree of irreducible characters of $\mathrm{Irr}_p(G|N)$ are denoted by $\mathrm{acd}_p(G)$ and $\mathrm{acd}_p(G|N)$, respectively. We show that if $\mathrm{Irr}_p(G|N) \neq \emptyset $ and $\mathrm{acd}_p(G|N) < \mathrm{acd}_p(\mathrm{PSL}_2(p))$, then G is p-solvable and $O^{p'}(G)$ is solvable. We find examples that make this bound best possible. Moreover, we see that if $\mathrm{Irr}_p(G|N) = \emptyset $, then N is p-solvable and $P \cap N$ and $PN/N$ are abelian for every $P \in \mathrm{Syl}_p(G)$.

As an extension of Sylvester’s matrix, a tridiagonal matrix is investigated by determining both left and right eigenvectors. Orthogonality relations between left and right eigenvectors are derived. Two determinants of the matrices constructed by the left and right eigenvectors are evaluated in closed form.

We obtain bounds for certain functionals defined on a class of meromorphic functions in the unit disc of the complex plane with a nonzero simple pole. These bounds are sharp in a certain sense. We also discuss possible applications of this result. Finally, we generalise the result to meromorphic functions with more than one simple pole.

The Frobenius–Schur indicators of characters in a real $2$-block with dihedral defect groups have been determined by Murray [‘Real subpairs and Frobenius–Schur indicators of characters in 2-blocks’, J. Algebra 322 (2009), 489–513]. We show that two infinite families described in his work do not exist and we construct examples for the remaining families. We further present some partial results on Frobenius–Schur indicators of characters in other tame blocks.
