We prove the unimodality of some coloured $q$-Eulerian polynomials, which involve the flag excedances, the major index and the fixed points on coloured permutation groups, via two recurrence formulas. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli about the unimodality of the flag excedances over type B derangements. Furthermore, we find the coloured version of Gessel’s hook factorisation, which enables us to interpret these two recurrences combinatorially. We also provide a combinatorial proof of a symmetric and unimodal expansion for the coloured derangement polynomial, which was first established by Shin and Zeng using continued fractions.

A cyclotomic polynomial $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}_{k}(x)$ is an essential cyclotomic factor of $f(x)\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}_{k}(x)\mid f(x)$ and every prime divisor of $k$ is less than or equal to the number of terms of $f.$ We show that if a monic polynomial with coefficients from $\{-1,0,1\}$ has a cyclotomic factor, then it has an essential cyclotomic factor. We use this result to prove a conjecture posed by Mercer [‘Newman polynomials, reducibility, and roots on the unit circle’, Integers12(4) (2012), 503–519].

Let M be an n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We study the fundamental group of M when the universal covering space of M, M is close to some Euclidean space ℝs asymptotically.

For a Tychonoff space $X$, let $\mathbb{V}(X)$ be the free topological vector space over $X$, $A(X)$ the free abelian topological group over $X$ and $\mathbb{I}$ the unit interval with its usual topology. It is proved here that if $X$ is a subspace of $\mathbb{I}$, then the following are equivalent: $\mathbb{V}(X)$ can be embedded in $\mathbb{V}(\mathbb{I})$ as a topological vector subspace; $A(X)$ can be embedded in $A(\mathbb{I})$ as a topological subgroup; $X$ is locally compact.

In this paper we show that a polygonal quasiconformal mapping always corresponds to a chord-arc curve. Furthermore, we find that the set of curves corresponding to polygonal quasiconformal mappings is path connected in the set of all bounded chord-arc curves.

Let A be a domain of the boundary of a (weakly) pseudoconvex domain Ω of ℂn and M a smooth, closed, maximally complex submanifold of A. We find a subdomain E of ℂn, depending only on Ω and A, and a complex variety W⊂E such that bW=M in E. Moreover, a generalization to analytic sets of depth at least 4 is given.

We investigate the composition operators Cφ acting on the Bergman space of the unit disc D, where φ is a holomorphic self-map of D. Some new conditions for Cφ to belong to the Schatten class 𝒮p are obtained. We also construct a compact composition operator which does not belong to any Schatten class.

The object of the present paper is to study the delay differential equation of arbitrary order namely y(n)(t) + a(t)yτ(t) = f(t), n≥2 (an integer) and prove a nonoscillation theorem under the general situation in which a(t) and f(t) are allowed to oscillate arbitrarily often on some positive half real line. This is accomplished by way of two differential inequalities of nth order.

It is known that a finite non-abelian group G has a proper centralizer of order if, for example, |G| is even and |Z(G)| is odd, or whenever G is solvable. Often the exponent can be improved to , for example when G is supersolvable, or metabelian, or |G = pαqβ. Here we show more generally that this improvement is possible in many situations where G is factorizable into the product of two subgroups. In particular, much more evidence is presented to support the conjecture that some proper centralizer has order whenever G is a finite non-abelian solvable group.

We consider the set of elements in a translation of the middle-third Cantor set which can be well approximated by algebraic numbers of bounded degree. A doubling dimensional result is given, which enables one to conclude an upper bound on the dimension of the set in question for a generic translation.

In this paper, we prove the existence of the ground state for the spinor Bose–Einstein condensates with an external Ioffe–Pitchard magnetic field in the one-dimensional case. We also characterise the ground states of spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates with an external Ioffe–Pitchard magnetic field; that is, for ferromagnetic systems, we show that, under some condition, searching for the ground state of ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensates with an external Ioffe–Pitchard magnetic field can be reduced to a ‘one-component’ minimisation problem.

The purpose of this paper is to completely characterize splitting torsion theories over commutative rings. In particular, if (T, F) is a torsion theory for which T(R) = 0, then (T, F) is a splitting theory if and only if T contains only a finite number of nonisomorphic simple modules and every module in T is semisimple injective. In addition, an ideal theoretic characterization of splitting torsion theories is given, of which one consequence is that splitting torsion theories are TTF; furthermore, if R is also noetherian, then such torsion theories are centrally splitting. The known theorems concerning the splitting of the Goldie and simple torsion theories (for commutative rings) are derived from our theorem.

Let Cr[0,t] be the function space of the vector-valued continuous paths x:[0,t]→ℝr and define Xt:Cr[0,t]→ℝ(n+1)r by Xt(x)=(x(0),x(t1),…,x(tn)), where 0<t1<⋯<tn=t. In this paper, using a simple formula for the conditional expectations of the functions on Cr[0,t] given Xt, we evaluate the conditional analytic Feynman integral Eanfq[Ft∣Xt] of Ft given by where θ(s,⋅) are the Fourier–Stieltjes transforms of the complex Borel measures on ℝr, and provide an inversion formula for Eanfq[Ft∣Xt]. Then we present an existence theorem for the solution of an integral equation including the integral equation which is formally equivalent to the Schrödinger differential equation. We show that the solution can be expressed by Eanfq[Ft∣Xt] and a probability distribution on ℝr when Xt(x)=(x(0),x(t)).

We introduce the spaces Vℬp(X) (respectively 𝒱ℬp(X)) of the vector measures ℱ:Σ→X of bounded (p,ℬ)-variation (respectively of bounded (p,ℬ)-semivariation) with respect to a bounded bilinear map ℬ:X×Y →Z and show that the spaces Lℬp(X) consisting of functions which are p-integrable with respect to ℬ, defined in by Blasco and Calabuig [‘Vector-valued functions integrable with respect to bilinear maps’, Taiwanese Math. J. to appear], are isometrically embedded in Vℬp(X). We characterize 𝒱ℬp(X) in terms of bilinear maps from Lp′×Y into Z and Vℬp(X) as a subspace of operators from Lp′(Z*) into Y*. Also we define the notion of cone absolutely summing bilinear maps in order to describe the (p,ℬ)-variation of a measure in terms of the cone-absolutely summing norm of the corresponding bilinear map from Lp′×Y into Z.

We show that for the Sorgenfrey line S, the minimal dense linearly ordered extension of S is a D-space, but not a monotone D-space; the minimal closed linearly ordered extension of S is not a monotone D-space; the monotone D-property is inversely preserved by finite-to-one closed mappings, but cannot be inversely preserved by perfect mappings.

We prove rigidity theorems for ancient solutions of geometric flows of immersed submanifolds. Specifically, we find conditions on the second fundamental form that characterise the shrinking sphere among compact ancient solutions for the mean curvature flow in codimension two surfaces.
