In this note we characterise finitely generated self-projective R-modules M satisfying the property that every non-zero M-singular. R-module contains a non-zero M-injective submodule.

For an even Dirichlet character ψ, we obtain a formula for L (1, ψ) in terms of a sum of Dirichlet L-Series evaluated at s = 2 and s = 3 and a rapidly convergent numerical series involving the central binomial coefficients. We then derive a class number formula for real quadratic number fields by taking L (s, ψ) to be the quadratic L-series associated with these fields.

For a hereditary torsion theory τ, a module A is called τ-completedly decomposable if it is a direct sum of modules that are the τ-injective hull of each of their non-zero submodules. We give a positive answer in several cases to the following generalised Matlis' problem: Is every direct summand of a τ-completely decomposable module still τ-completely decomposable? Secondly, for a commutative Noetherian ring R that is not a domain, we determine those torsion theories with the property that every τ-injective module is an essential extension of a (τ-injective) τ-completely decomposable module.

Let p be a prime and let (mk)k<ω be a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers such that m0 = 1 and mk divides mk+1. A field F is said to be of type (p, (mk)k<ω) if it is the union of an increasing sequence (Fk)k<ω of fields such that Fk has pmk elements. A set X is called “finite” if it has n elements for some nonnegative integer n, and “Dedekind-finite” if every injection f: X → X is a bijection. If the Axiom of Choice is rejected, then it is relatively consistent to assume the existence of medial (that is, infinite, Dedekind-finite) sets. In this paper it is shown that given any type (p, (mk)k<ω) as above, it is relatively consistent with the usual axioms of set theory (minus Choice) to assume the existence of a medial field of type (p, (mk)k<ω). Conversely, it is shown that any medial field must be of type (p, (mk)k<ω) for some (p, (mk)k<ω) as above. The paper concludes with a few observations on Dedekind-finite rings. In the first part of the paper, a general knowledge of Fraenkel-Mostowski set theory and of the Jech-Sochor Embedding Theorems is assumed.

We show that for a bounded subset $A$ of the $L_{1}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ space with finite measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$, the measure of weak noncompactness of $A$ based on the convex separation of sequences coincides with the measure of deviation from the Banach–Saks property expressed by the arithmetic separation of sequences. A similar result holds for a related quantity with the alternating signs Banach–Saks property. The results provide a geometric and quantitative extension of Szlenk’s theorem saying that every weakly convergent sequence in the Lebesgue space $L_{1}$ has a subsequence whose arithmetic means are norm convergent.

If f(x) is defined on [−1, 1], let H¯1 n(f, x) denote the Lagrange interpolation polynomial of degree n (or less) for f which agrees with f at the n+1 equally spaced points xk, n = −1 + (2k)/n (0 ≤ k ≤ n). A famous example due to S. Bernstein shows that even for the simple function h(x) = │x│, the sequence H¯1 n (h, x) diverges as n → ∞ for each x in 0 < │x│ < 1. A generalisation of Lagrange interpolation is the Hermite-Fejér interpolation polynomial H¯mn (f, x), which is the unique polynomial of degree no greater than m(n + 1) – 1 which satisfies (f, Xk, n) = δo, pf(xk, n) (0 ≤ p ≤ m − 1, 0 ≤ k ≤ n). In general terms, if m is an even number, the polynomials H¯mn(f, x) seem to possess better convergence properties than the H¯1 n (f, x). Nevertheless, D.L. Berman was able to show that for g(x) ≡ x, the sequence H¯2n(g, x) diverges as n → ∞ for each x in 0 < │x│. In this paper we extend Berman's result by showing that for any even m, H¯mn(g, x) diverges as n → ∞ for each x in 0 < │x│ < 1. Further, we are able to obtain an estimate for the error │H¯mn(g, x) – g(x)│.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an orthogonal $\ast$-basis of symmetry classes of tensors associated to nonabelian groups of order $pq$ are provided by using vanishing sums of roots of unity.

For $k\geq 2$ and a nonzero integer n, a generalised Diophantine m-tuple with property $D_k(n)$ is a set of m positive integers $S = \{a_1,a_2,\ldots , a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j + n$ is a kth power for $1\leq i< j\leq m$. Define $M_k(n):= \text {sup}\{|S| : S$ having property $D_k(n)\}$. Dixit et al. [‘Generalised Diophantine m-tuples’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150(4) (2022), 1455–1465] proved that $M_k(n)=O(\log n)$, for a fixed k, as n varies. In this paper, we obtain effective upper bounds on $M_k(n)$. In particular, we show that for $k\geq 2$, $M_k(n) \leq 3\,\phi (k) \log n$ if n is sufficiently large compared to k.

If $T$ is any finite higher commutator in an associative ring $R$, for example, $T= [[R, R] , [R, R] ] $, and if $T$ has minimal cardinality so that the ideal generated by $T$ is infinite, then $T$ is in the centre of $R$ and ${T}^{2} = 0$. Also, if $T$ is any finite, higher commutator containing no nonzero nilpotent element then $T$ generates a finite ideal.

A positive even number is said to be a Maillet number if it can be written as the difference between two primes, and a Kronecker number if it can be written in infinitely many ways as the difference between two primes. It is believed that all even numbers are Kronecker numbers. We study the division and multiplication of Kronecker numbers and show that these numbers are rather abundant. We prove that there is a computable constant k and a set D consisting of at most 720 computable Maillet numbers such that, for any integer n, $kn$ can be expressed as a product of a Kronecker number and a Maillet number in D. We also prove that every positive rational number can be written as a ratio of two Kronecker numbers.

we discuss conditions which ensure that a G-CW complex is G-homotopy equivalent to a CW complex with cellular action with respect to some CW decomposition of the compact Lie group G. For G = SU (2), we prove that for every G-CW complex X, there exists a CW complex Y which is G-homotopy equivalent to X, such that the action G × Y → Y is a cellular map.

As a special case of more general results, it is proved in this note that, if α is any real number and δ any positive number, then there exists a positive integer X such that the inequality

The method depends on the study of infinite sequences of real linear forms in a fixed number of variables. It has relations to that used by Kronecker in the proof of his classical theorem and can be generalised.

In this paper, by introducing the bounded variation measure defined on effect algebras, we present the equivalent conditions about uniformly strongly additive measures.

Let M be a Puiseux monoid, that is, a monoid consisting of nonnegative rationals (under standard addition). In this paper, we study factorisations in atomic Puiseux monoids through the lens of their associated Betti graphs. The Betti graph of $b \in M$ is the graph whose vertices are the factorisations of b with edges between factorisations that share at least one atom. If the Betti graph associated to b is disconnected, then we call b a Betti element of M. We explicitly compute the set of Betti elements for a large class of Puiseux monoids (the atomisations of certain infinite sequences of rationals). The process of atomisation is quite useful in studying the arithmetic of Puiseux monoids, and it has been actively considered in recent literature. This leads to an argument that for every positive integer n, there exists an atomic Puiseux monoid with exactly n Betti elements.
