Let G be a finite group. It is proved that the localised Buinside ring Ωp(G) is of finite representation type if and only if for each p–perfect subgroup H of G, , where means the conjugacy class of K.

For $k\geq 2$ and a nonzero integer n, a generalised Diophantine m-tuple with property $D_k(n)$ is a set of m positive integers $S = \{a_1,a_2,\ldots , a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j + n$ is a kth power for $1\leq i< j\leq m$. Define $M_k(n):= \text {sup}\{|S| : S$ having property $D_k(n)\}$. Dixit et al. [‘Generalised Diophantine m-tuples’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150(4) (2022), 1455–1465] proved that $M_k(n)=O(\log n)$, for a fixed k, as n varies. In this paper, we obtain effective upper bounds on $M_k(n)$. In particular, we show that for $k\geq 2$, $M_k(n) \leq 3\,\phi (k) \log n$ if n is sufficiently large compared to k.

A complex Banach algebra is a complexification of a real Banach algebra if and only if it carries a conjugation operator. We prove a uniqueness theorem concerning strictly real selfconjugate subalgebras of a given complex algebra. An example is given of a complex Banach algebra carrying two distinct but commuting conjugations, whose selfconjugate subalgebras are both strictly real. The class of strictly real Banach algebras is shown to be a variety, and the manner of their generation by suitable elements is proved. A corollary describes some strictly real subalgebras in Hermitian Banach star algebras, including C* algebras.

Suppose the edges of the complete graph on 17 vertices are coloured in three colours. It is shown that at least five monochromatic triangles must aris.

In this paper, some new coincidence point theorems in continuous function spaces are presented. We show the hybrid mapping version and multivalued version of both Lou’s fixed point theorem (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.127 (1999)) and de Pascale and de Pascale’s fixed point theorem (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.130 (2002)). Our new results encompass a number of previously known generalizations of the theorems. Two examples are presented.

Functions in the meromorphic Besov, Qp and related classes are characterized in terms of double integrals of certain oscillation quantities involving chordal distances. Some of the results are analogous to the corresponding results in the analytic case.

We introduce an analogue of the Mertens conjecture for elliptic curves over finite fields. Using a result of Waterhouse, we classify the isogeny classes of elliptic curves for which this conjecture holds in terms of the size of the finite field and the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism acting on the curve.

It is shown that, in Pettis's criterion for Bochner measurability of a vector-valued function f: S → X, scalar measurability of f can be weakened to requiring that u of be measurable for u in some subset of the dual X* separating the points of X. Even then, the separability hypotheses in Pettis's Theorem can be weakened as well.

Let M be a Puiseux monoid, that is, a monoid consisting of nonnegative rationals (under standard addition). In this paper, we study factorisations in atomic Puiseux monoids through the lens of their associated Betti graphs. The Betti graph of $b \in M$ is the graph whose vertices are the factorisations of b with edges between factorisations that share at least one atom. If the Betti graph associated to b is disconnected, then we call b a Betti element of M. We explicitly compute the set of Betti elements for a large class of Puiseux monoids (the atomisations of certain infinite sequences of rationals). The process of atomisation is quite useful in studying the arithmetic of Puiseux monoids, and it has been actively considered in recent literature. This leads to an argument that for every positive integer n, there exists an atomic Puiseux monoid with exactly n Betti elements.

The present work is concerned with an integration by parts formula for the Pk-integral of De Sarkar and Das, and of the equivalent Pk-integral of Bullen. The process involves a simpler and updated version of that for the Zk−1-integral of Bergin. If f is Pk – (Zk−1)-integrable and G is of bounded kth variation, then fG is Pk – (Zk−1)-integrable.

In this note we answer a question of W. G. Bade by showing that if a normal, unital Banach function algebra A is strongly regular at one of its characters φ has a bounded approximate identity, then A has bounded relative units at φ. In particular, every strong Ditkin algebra has bounded relative units at all points of its character space. There need not, however, be a global bound available for the relative units.

Let X be a Hausdorff locally convex space. We show that convergence of a net of continuous linear functionals on X with respect to a given polar topology on its continuous dual X′ can be explained in terms of the convergence of the corresponding net of its graphs in X × R, and the corresponding net of level sets at a fixed height in X, with respect to a natural generalisation of Attouch-Wets convergence in normable spaces.

We prove an existence theorem for nonlinear differential equations with deviating arguments and with implicit derivatives. The proof is based on the notion of measure of noncompactness and the Darbo fixed point theorem.

Bishop-Gromov type comparison theorems for the volume of a tube about a sub-manifold of a complete Riemannian manifold whose Ricci curvature is bounded from below are proved. The Kähler analogue is also proved.

Maximum and minimum values are obtained for some sums invovling the divisor functions of number theory.

The notion of “mean II-curvature” of a C4-surface (without parabolic points) in the three-dimensional Euclidean space has been introduced by Ekkehart Glässner. The aim of this note is to give some global characterizations of the sphere related to the above notion.

In the three-dimensional Euclidean space E3 we consider a sufficiently smooth ovaloid S (closed convex surface) with Gaussian curvature K > 0 . The ovaloid S possesses a positive definite second fundamental form II, if appropriately oriented. During the last years several authors have been concerned with the problem of characterizations of the sphere by the curvature of the second fundamental form of S. In this paper we give some characterizations of the sphere using the concept of the mean II-curvatureHII (of S), defined by Ekkehart Glässner.

Let 𝕂 be a field, char(𝕂)≠2, and G a subgroup of GL(n,𝕂). Suppose g↦g♯ is a 𝕂-linear antiautomorphism of G, and then define G1={g∈G∣g♯g=I}. For C being the centraliser 𝒞G (G1) , or any subgroup of the centre 𝒵(G) , define G(C) ={g∈G∣g♯g∈C}. We show that G(C) is a subgroup of G, and study its structure. When C=𝒞G (G1) , we have that G(C) =𝒩G (G1) , the normaliser of G1 in G. Suppose 𝕂 is algebraically closed, 𝒞G (G1) consists of scalar matrices and G1 is a connected subgroup of an affine group G. Under the latter assumptions, 𝒩G (G1) is a self-normalising subgroup of G. This holds for a number of interesting pairs (G,G1); in particular, for those that we call parabolic pairs. As well, for a certain specific setting we generalise a standard result about centres of Borel subgroups.

For a compact subset K of the boundary of a compact Hausdorff space X, six properties that K may have in relation to the algebra A(X) are considered. It is shown that in relation to the algebra A(Dn), where Dn denotes the n-dimensional polydisc, the property of being totally null is weaker than the other five properties. A general condition is given on the algebra A(X) which implies the existence of a totally null set that is not null, and several conditions are stated for A(X) , each of which is sufficient for a totally null set to be a null set.

We show that certain sums of partition numbers are divisible by multiples of 2 and 3. For example, if $p(n)$ denotes the number of unrestricted partitions of a positive integer n (and $p(0)=1$, $p(n)=0$ for $n<0$), then for all nonnegative integers m,
