1. By means of a cranial transillumination method used in conjunction with lumbar and bregmatic punctures, an increase in the space which contains the cerebro-spinal fluid in the cranial region is suggested in children with severe marasmic malnutrition.

2. The results appear to indicate that this is due to a diminished brain size, creating a space in the interior of the cranium which secondarily fills with cerebro-spinal fluid.

Recent studies have focused on habitual intake without addressing meal-specific intakes. We aimed to identify meal-specific dietary patterns and their contribution to habitual dietary patterns. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 838 adults, both sexes who attended the health centres in Tehran. Dietary data were recorded by three 24-h dietary recalls (24hDR). Dietary patterns were identified by using principal component analysis on meal-specific and overall food intakes. Intraclass correlation (ICC) was used as a measurement of consistency across meals and days. Correlation analysis and linear regression (partial R 2) were used for meals contribution. Four habitual dietary patterns were derived from average dietary intake of 3-d 24hDR labelled as ‘Western’, ‘Healthy’, ‘Traditional’ and ‘Legume and broth’. Also, we identified two major dietary patterns on each meal level (factor 1 and 2 for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner). The highest contribution of energy intake was observed in lunch (25·7 %), followed by dinner (20·81 %). Consistency of food groups was the highest across days (ICC tea = 0·58) and breakfasts (ICC tea = 0·60). Dinner had a strong correlation coefficient with the ‘Western’ habitual dietary pattern then followed by lunch. Similarly, dinner and lunch contributed the most (r and partial R 2) to the ‘Western’ habitual dietary pattern. Our results suggest that habitual dietary patterns to several extents are formed at meal levels, and dinner has a greater contribution to the habitual dietary patterns in Iranian people. This may help planning for local dietary guidelines according to the time of eating to promote public health.

Dietary intake of long-chain n-3 PUFA (n-3 PUFA), particularly EPA and DHA, has been associated with psychological well-being, but little is known about the n-3 PUFA intake of homeless youth. The current study determined the association between depression and anxiety symptoms and n-3 PUFA intake and erythrocytes status in homeless youth. Totally, 114 homeless youth aged 18–24 years were recruited from a drop-in centre. n-3 PUFA dietary intake was assessed using an FFQ, and erythrocytes status was determined by gas chromatography (GC). Linear regression models were used to determine the relationship between psychological well-being and n-3 PUFA intake and status. The mean intakes of EPA and DHA for all participants (0·06 ± 0·13 g/d and 0·11 ± 0·24 g/d) were well below recommended levels, and mean erythrocytes EPA + DHA (n-3 index) in the cohort (2·42 %) was lower than reported for healthy, housed adolescents and those with clinical depression. There was no association of n-3 PUFA intake and erythrocytes status with either depression or anxiety. However, the relationships of depression with dietary EPA (P = 0·017) and DHA (P = 0·008), as well as erythrocytes DHA (P = 0·007) and n 3-index (P = 0·009), were significantly moderated by sex even after adjusting for confounders. Specifically, among females, as the intake and status of these n-3 PUFA decreased, depression increased. Our findings show poor dietary intake and low erythrocytes status of n-3 PUFA among homeless youth, which is associated with depressive symptoms among females.

1. Pigs weaned at 2 d of age were given diets in which a functional fish-protein concentrate (FFPC) supplied 0 (diet U), 350 (diet H), 525 (diet I) or 700 (diet G) g crude protein (nitrogen × 6·25, CP)/kg total CP. The remainder of the CP was supplied by dried skim-milk and whey. The diets were reconstituted (200 g dry matter (DM)/l), from two spray-dried powders (diets U and G) and these were mixed in the proportions 1:1 and 1:3 (v/v) to give diets H and I respectively. All four diets were given at hourly intervals on a scale based on live weight, and supplemented with vitamins and minerals. All diets contained the same amounts of calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium.

2. In an experiment to 28 d of age with ten pigs/diet, performance was inversely related to the amount of FFPC in the diet. One pig (diet I) and four pigs (diet G) died after scouring. In healthy pigs, N retention (g/d per kg live weight) was not affected by partial replacement of dried skim-milk (diet H).

3. Digestion of protein was studied in a further experiment with eight pigs/diet, killed at 7 d of age and at 1 h after a feed. The amount, pH, DM and total N contents of the digesta in the stomach were also inversely related to the amount of FFPC in the diet.

4. FFPC had no consistent effect on proteolytic enzymes. Greater amounts of trypsin and chymotrypsin were present in the distal compared with the proximal region of the small intestine, but source of dietary protein had no effect.

5. The proportion of non-protein-N in the total N in digesta from the small intestine was lower in pigs receiving FFPC suggesting that this protein may be more resistant to proteolysis than milk proteins. The apparent absence of an increase in enzyme secretion when FFPC was given could, therefore, explain the decrease in performance.

6. Some general effects of non-milk proteins from this series of experiments in the baby pig are discussed. It is suggested that performance may be inversely related to the rate of gastric emptying, as indicated by the amount of DM in the stomach. Unlike milk, other sources of protein did not coagulate in the stomach, and reduced the pH, DM and total N contents of the digesta. Giving diets containing a single-cell protein did appear to stimulate proteolytic enzyme secretion, unlike fish or soya-bean proteins.

This study estimated total body water (TBW) in four groups (twelve per group; sedentary and highly trained men and women) at the time of 2H dosing (T0) and after a 3·5 h equilibration period (Teq). Standard TBW calculations were employed at T0 (no correction for disproportionate urinary tracer loss) and Teq (correction for urinary tracer loss only), plus those calculations that corrected for a disproportionate urinary tracer loss and insensible tracer loss respectively. The measurement of body density enabled the four TBW estimates to be compared for the determination of three-compartment % body fat (BF). The very small difference between the standard and corrected T0 TBW data was not significant (P=0·914) and no Group×TBW interaction was identified (P=0·125). These results reflect the closeness of the 2H concentration in the urine produced during the equilibration period and the Teq saliva samples. The associated mean % BF values were essentially identical. Although correcting for insensible 2H losses in addition to urinary losses at Teq produced a statistically significant (P<0·001) lower mean TBW (about 200 g) than the standard calculation, this translated to a small difference in % BF (0·3). The larger difference (about 500 g, P<0·001) between the two (T0, Teq) corrected TBW calculations was also associated with a small body composition difference (0·1 % BF), which was less than the propagated error (0·3 % BF) for the three-compartment body composition model. Corrections to the standard calculations of TBW at T0 and Teq for a protocol employing a brief equilibration period (3·5 h) were therefore of marginal use for improving the accuracy of % BF estimates. The TBW difference over time (T0v. Teq) also had little impact on % BF values.

Zoo animal nutritionists need to make decisions about diet composition for a wide variety of vertebrate species, including those with very specialized diets (dietary specialists). For some zoo species it is common to refer to the published literature on the nutrient requirements of analogous domestic animals, such as cattle, horses and cats, as well as human beings (Allen & Oftedal, 1996). When this information is combined with knowledge of natural history, feeding patterns, composition of foods consumed in the wild and gastrointestinal tract morphology, it is possible to develop a sound foundation for a successful feeding programme for many zoo animals.

Cellular sodium transport via the Na+, K+-ATPase contributes significantly to daily energy expenditure. The effect of a meal on leucocyte Na+ transport and intracellular electrolytes was therefore investigated in lean normal subjects at room temperatures of 23° and 33°, to determine if the Na pump responds to the need for thermogenesis. In the fasting state, the ouabain-sensitive efflux rate which reflects active Na+ transport, and the intracellular electrolytes were similar. At 2 h after eating a 4·2 MJ (1000 kcal) meal, the ouabain-sensitive efflux rate constant rose when the room temperature was 23° but not at 33°. The ouabain-sensitive Na+ efflux rate, an index of active Na+ transport, 0rose post-prandially at 23° only. The post-prandial activation of leucocyte active Na efflux in normal subjects was blunted at higher environmental temperatures, when the need for thermogenesis was reduced.

The effects of the trace lipids (Ll and L2) extracted from two kinds of whey-mineral complex on bone metabolism were studied in young ovariectomized (OW) rats. The concentrations of oestradiol in the L1 and L2 oils were 305 and 1313 pg/ml respectively, wbile the concentrations of progesterone were 34.3 and 36.9 ng/ml respectively. Trace amounts of lα, 25dibydroxycbolecalciferol (lα29(0H)2D) were detected: 56 pg/ml in the L1 oil and 132 pg/ml in the L2 oil. The OVX rats were orally given 0.4 ml each test oil twice weekly. Other animals were given with only a vehicle (control) or an oil mixture with similar levels of oestradiol and progesterone to those in L2 oil (PE oil) for comparison. The Ca absorption rate, bone density of the humerus and femoral Ca content in the rats given L2 were significantly higher than those in the control rats (P < 0.05). Serum calcitonin and lα,25-(OH)2D from rats given L2 were both sigdicantly higher than those from the control rats, while serum progesterone in the L2 group was slightly lower. It is suggested that the bone metabolism of rats given L2 reflected the compound effect of 1,2yOH), D and oestradiol in the L2 oil. In contrast, the relatively low level of these hormones might have been associated with the mediacre bone cbarocteriStcs of the L1 group. It is suggested from these results that the trace level of hormones could be one of the reasons why wbey-mineral complex showed good Ca availability.

A high dose of whey protein hydrolysate fed with milk minerals rich in calcium (Capolac®) results in enhanced glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) concentrations in lean individuals; however, the effect of different calcium doses ingested alongside protein is unknown. The present study assessed the dose response of calcium fed alongside 25 g whey protein hydrolysate on GLP-1 concentrations in individuals with overweight/obesity. Eighteen adults (mean ± sd: 8M/10F, 34 ± 18 years, 28·2 ± 2·9 kgm−2) completed four trials in a randomised, double-blind, crossover design. Participants consumed test solutions consisting of 25 g whey protein hydrolysate (CON), supplemented with 3179 mg (LOW), 6363 mg (MED) or 9547 mg (HIGH) Capolac® on different occasions, separated by at least 48 h. The calcium content of test solutions equated to 65, 892, 1719 and 2547 mg, respectively. Arterialised-venous blood was sampled over 180 min to determine plasma concentrations of GLP-1TOTAL, GLP-17–36amide, insulin, glucose, NEFA, and serum concentrations of calcium and albumin. Ad libitum energy intake was measured at 180 min. Time–averaged incremental AUC (iAUC) for GLP-1TOTAL (pmol·l−1·min−1) did not differ between CON (23 ± 4), LOW (25 ± 6), MED (24 ± 5) and HIGH (24 ± 6). Energy intake (kcal) did not differ between CON (940 ± 387), LOW (884 ± 345), MED (920 ± 334) and HIGH (973 ± 390). Co-ingestion of whey protein hydrolysate with Capolac® does not potentiate GLP-1 release in comparison with whey protein hydrolysate alone. The study was registered at clinical trials (NCT03819972).

The relationship between essential fatty acids (EFA) deficiency and the utilization of dietary protein, growth rate and survival of offspring was investigated in rats during development and reproduction. EFA deficiency was induced by feeding a 200 g casein/kg-based diet containing 70 g hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO)/lkg as the only source of fat. The conversion efficiency of dietary protein was assessed as net protein utilization (NPU), using a 10 d comparative carcass technique. Consumption of the deficient diet during the 10 d assay period induced biochemical changes characteristic of mild EFA deficiency in humans (triene:tetraene 0·27 (SD 0·04) compared with 0·026 (SD 0·004) for wn-deficient controls), but there were no significant changes in growth rate or protein utilization. These variables were also unchanged when the deficient diet was fed for an additional 7 d before the assay, although triene: tetraene increased to 0.8 (SD 0·02). Feeding the deficient diet for 63 d before assay produced severe EFA deficiency (triene:tetraene 1.4 (SD 0·3) v. 0·036 (SD 0·005) for controls), a fall in growth rate (25% during assay period), and NPU (31.5 (SD 0·63) v. 39.0 (SD 0·93) for controls). These severely-EFA-deficient animals had a 30% higher fasting-resting rate of energy metabolism than that of age-matched controls. However, there was no change in the rate of endogenous N loss. Voluntary energy consumption was increased in animals fed on deficient diets, either with 200 g protein/kg, or protein free. The reduced efficiency of protein utilization could be entirely accounted for by the restricted amount of energy available for growth and protein deposition. Consumption of an EFA-deficient diet during pregnancy and lactation resulted in high mortality (11% survival rate at weaning compared with 79% for controls) and retarded growth in the preweaning offspring. It is concluded that animals are particularly sensitive to EFA deficiency during reproduction and pre- and post-natal stages of development. However, after weaning only severe EFA deficiency retarded growth, primarily through changes in energy balance.

To investigate the chronological changes in conjunctival epithelium after supplementation with a massive oral dose of vitamin A, conjunctival impression cytology (CIC) with transfer was carried out repeatedly among 200 children aged 6–120 months in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Chandigarh (India). Significant conversion to normal CIC started 71–80 d after vitamin A supplementation and by 101–110d conversion had taken place in all children. Compared with the placebo group, plasma retinol concentration at 100d post-supplement was found to be significantly higher in the vitamin A-supplemented group P = 0·04. This study demonstrates that CIC responds to a massive oral dose of vitamin A 3–4 months after supplementation. These findings should guide future studies and evaluations in which CIC is used to assess response to vitamin A interventions.

The effect of growth hormone (GH) on arylesterase (AE), one of the activities of paraoxonase, has never been studied. The aims of the present study in mice were: (a) to compare the effect of age and sex on serum lipid and lipoprotein levels after consumption of lactalbumin- v. chow-based diets and (b) to study the effect of GH administration, age and sex on serum AE activity, lipid and lipoprotein and body fat levels in mice fed a lactalbumin diet. Seventy-two mice were divided into three age- and sex-matched experimental groups: (1) control chow (CC), (2) non-GH lactalbumin (NGL) and (3) GH-treated lactalbumin (GL) mice. Lactalbumin increased total cholesterol, (LDL+VLDL)-cholesterol and TAG and diminished HDL-cholesterol in all animals (P < 0·05). In comparison with their NGL counterparts, old GL males presented lower total cholesterol (15 %) and (LDL+VLDL)-cholesterol (17 %) levels (P < 0·05), whereas values of the same parameters were higher in adult GL males (P < 0·05) (22 and 23 %, respectively). Adult GL females displayed higher serum HDL-cholesterol concentrations (26 %) (P < 0·05) than adult NGL females. AE activity was lower in old GL females (78 %) and old GL males (20 %) (P < 0·05), but higher in adult GL males (100 %) (P < 0·01). GH, that was inversely related to food intake, decreased abdominal and gonadal fat in all mice (P < 0·05). To conclude, lactalbumin induced an atherogenic lipoprotein profile in NGL mice that was reverted by GH, preferentially in old males, suggesting that GH therapy will be more effective in aged men. The present results suggest that AE activity was age-, sex- and body fat level-dependent and that it diminished as a consequence of improved antioxidant status.

Isoflavone intake is associated with various properties beneficial to human health which are related to their antioxidant activity, for example, to their ability to increase LDL oxidation resistance. However, the distribution of isoflavones among plasma lipoproteins has not yet been elucidated in vivo. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the association between daidzein (DAI) and lipoproteins in human plasma upon administration of the aglycone and glucoside form. Five men aged 22–30 years participated in a randomised, double-blind study in cross-over design. After ingestion of DAI and daidzein-7-O-β-d-glucoside (DG) (1 mg DAI aglycone equivalents/kg body weight) blood samples were drawn before isoflavone administration as well as 1, 2, 3, 4·5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24 and 48 h post-dose. Concentrations of DAI in the different lipoprotein fractions (chylomicrons, VLDL, LDL, HDL) and in the non-lipoprotein fraction were analysed using isotope dilution capillary GC/MS. The lipoprotein fraction profiles were similar for all subjects and resembled those obtained for plasma in our previously published study. The lipoprotein distribution based on the area under the concentration–time profiles from 0 h to infinity in the different fractions were irrespective of the administered form: non-lipoprotein fraction (53 %) > LDL (20 %) > HDL (14 %) > VLDL (9·5 %) > chylomicrons (2·5 %). Of DAI present in plasma, 47 % was associated to lipoproteins. Concentrations in the different lipoprotein fractions as well as in the non-lipoprotein fraction were always higher after the ingestion of DG than of DAI. Taken together, these results demonstrate an association between isoflavones and plasma lipoproteins in vivo.
