The effect of early transition of the digestive system to exogenous nutrition was examined in three experiments with growing birds. A nutrient mixture (0·5 ml) of glucose, starch and oil (1:1:0·5, by vol) was orally administered immediately after hatch to turkey poults (Meleagris gallopavo) having immediate or delayed access to feed (Expt 1). Increasing amounts (0, 0·25 and 0·5 ml) of this mixture were administered immediately after hatch to turkey poults (Expt 2), or to broiler chicks (Gallus domesticus; Expt 3). The relative weights of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and its ingesta content, and the amylolytic capability of the pancreas were examined during the immediate post-hatch period (to 30 h). Oral administration of nutrients immediately after hatching only slightly influenced the growth of the pancreas and its amylolytic activity, but significantly increased GIT weight in both species, in a dose-dependent manne. It is suggested that early post-hatching of the digestive system by the forced administration of nutrient mixture induces anatomical and metabolic changes in the digestive system slightly earlier than in birds with late access to feed. This increases GIT content and plasma glucose levels, resulting in enhanced feed consumption and growth promotion.

Incorporation of 2·5 g/kg of the anorexigen, simmondsin, in the diet resulted in food intake reduction in both lean and obese Zucker rats; however, the obese rats were much more sensitive to the food intake-reducing activity of simmondsin. In both obese and lean simmondsin-treated Zucker rats, growth was slower than in control rats, but was the same as that in pair-fed animals. The 24 h heat production pattern showed a smaller diurnal variation and a lower mean in obese rats than in lean rats. Food intake reduction, as a result of either simmondsin treatment or pair feeding, caused a decrease in mean heat production. Simmondsin treatment, but not pair feeding, caused a decrease in the diurnal variation of heat production. Plasma total cholesterol levels were increased in both simmondsin-treated and pair-fed obese and lean Zucker rats compared with control animals; this increase was mainly due to an increase in HDL-cholesterol levels. Blood leptin levels in both obese and lean rats decreased with decreased food intake and decreased fat deposition, but in obese rats, simmondsin treatment resulted in an additional decrease in leptin levels. It is concluded that the food intake-reducing effect of simmondsin is more pronounced in obese Zucker rats than in their lean littermates, and except for the simmondsin-specific effects on leptin and total cholesterol values in obese littermates, the effects of simmondsin are related to food intake restriction in obese and lean Zucker rats.

1. Studies were done on the effects of giving calves two types of concentrate diet, both in a liquid form from an open pail or in a dry pelleted form, on the closure of oesophageal groove, body-weight gains and the digestibility of rations.

2. Twenty-four Holstein calves were used in an experiment by dividing into two groups of twelve calves each. The ‘dry-fed’ group (DFG) was given a pelleted concentrate, F1, from 25 to 42 d of age, and then given another type of pelleted concentrate, F2, from 43 to 87 d of age, and again given F1 from 88 to 112 d of age. The ‘liquid-fed’ group (LFG) was given from a pail a liquid suspension of the equivalent amount of the same concentrates as those fed to DFG calves, for the same periods. F1 contained skim milk and glucose with lower levels of maize and soya-bean meal than F2 which did not contain skim milk or glucose; F1 and F2 were both supplemented with 10 g methionine/kg and also supplemented with lysine at 5 and 10 g/kg respectively. All calves were allowed free access to roughage, and digestibilities were measured at 12 and 16 weeks of age.

3. Wet weights of reticulo-rumen and abomasal tissues (% whole stomach weight) were respectively 69.8 and 17.6 in DFG, and 59.0 and 26.4 in LFG at 42 d of age; at 87 d of age, the corresponding values were 68.0 and 16.3 in DFG, and 52.8 and 36.6 in LFG, and further, LFG had significantly more developed caecums and large intestines as well as significantly less developed reticulo-rumens and omasums than DFG.

4. Free amino acid patterns in plasma did not vary in DFG, but varied in LFG in response to the change in diet from F1 to F2 and to the difference between diets in lysine supplementation.

5. Feeding F1 in a liquid form and F2 in a dry form significantly improved calf gains. The intake of roughage in DFG exceeded that in LFG especially when F2 was fed.

6. The digestibility of diethyl ether extracts did not vary with feeding procedures, but that of crude protein (nitrogen × 6.25) was significantly higher in DFG independent of the type of diet. Digestibilities of dry matter and N-free extracts were significantly higher in LFG for F1, while higher in DFG for F2. The digestibility of acid-detergent fibre did not differ significantly between groups at 12 weeks of age, but was significantly higher in LFG at 16 weeks of age, suggesting a possible compensatory contribution of the large intestine to the digestion of fibre in LFG.

7. The efficiency of liquid feeding of a concentrate diet to ruminants compared with that of dry feeding is discussed.

The effect of mimosine on a perfused area of skin tissue was studied using an isolated perfusion technique. Four mature Angora wethers (body weight 35 (SE 2·3) kg) were cannulated bilaterally with indwelling silicone catheters in the superficial branches of the deep circumflex iliac artery and vein. Mimosine (40 mg/kg metabolic weight (W0·75) per d) was infused intra-arterially into one iliac artery of each goat for 3 d and saline was infused in the contralateral (control) iliac artery. Iliac venous blood samples were taken from both sides along with arterial samples from the carotid artery. Mimosine infusion elevated plasma mimosine in the carotid artery (52·6 (SEM 19·21)µmol/I) and iliac vein on the saline-treated side to 54·1 (SEM 16·31)µ/I and in the iliac vein on the mimosine-treated side to 191·3 (SEM19·14) µmol/I (P < 0·01). Mimosine decreased feed intake (2·3 v. 0·6 kg/d, SEM 0·29; P < 0·001) and water consumption (5·2 v. 1·3 litres/d, SEM 0·67; P < 0·001). Mimosine did not cause defleecing in the area of infusion and was cleared from the bloodstream within 12 h of cessation of infusion. The following effects were also observed during mimosine infusion: decrease in plasma amino acids to half pre-infusion values (methionine 22·7 v. 13·1 µmol/l, SEM 1·41; lysine 95·9 p. 37·4 µmol/l, SEM 4·28; P < 0·001); decreases in plasma triiodothyronine (1495 v. 695 ng/l, SEM 43·1; P < 0·001), thyroxine (61·5 v. 19·5 µg/l, SEM 1·8; P < 0·001) and insulin (28·7 v. 17·3 µIU/ml, SEM 1·89; P < 0·01) concentrations; increase in plasma cortisol (14 v. 62 µg/l, SEM 0·35; P < 0·001) concentration; decreases in levels of plasma Zn and Mg (0·97. v. 0·49 mg/l, SEM 0·063; P < 0·001 and 21·4 v. 14·6 mg/l, SEM 1·74; P < 0·001 respectively). All reported variables returned to their normal values 24 h after cessation of mimosine infusion except feed intake which was affected for a longer period. Mohair length and diameter were not affected by mimosine infusion. The toxicity of mimosine may be due to the drastic depletion of Zn and Mg in the blood as mimosine possesses very strong chelating properties and is excreted in the urine as a chelate.

Two formulas were derived to estimate the energy content of the human body which use only body mass, total body water by 3H2O dilution space and body minerals assessed by anthropometry. The formulas were tested in a body composition database of 561 patients and 151 normal volunteers using established metabolizable energy values for protein, fat and glycogen. Total body protein was determined by in vivo neutron activation analysis (IVNAA), body water by dilution of tritium and body minerals from skeletal frame size. Body glycogen was assumed to be 14.6 % of the mineral component. Body fat was obtained by difference, body mass less the sum of water, protein, minerals and glycogen. The standard deviation in the estimate of body energy content was 30 MJ or 4.1 % of the energy content of reference man. Two formulas for body energy content were derived by regression with body mass, total body water and body minerals or height. Two formulas for energy density and formulas for percentage body fat were similarly derived.

The food industry has five important roles in facilitating needed dietary and behavioural changes. Two of these roles are direct ones. Industry can increase the availability of a wide variety of basic commodities and new foods that help consumers meet dietary recommendations. It is also responsible for developing and formulating appealing, healthy and effective food products that decrease risks of chronic degenerative disease. Industry also plays an indirect role in facilitating dietary change by motivating consumers to select and prepare foods that will result in healthy dietary patterns. It can also participate in coalitions to facilitate other behaviours that decrease risks. Finally, it can collaborate actively in applied and fundamental research to further our understanding of the associations between food and health.

There is increasing interest in the gene-regulatory activities of isothiocyanates and flavonoids in human skin. Nrf2 agonists, such as isothiocyanate sulforaphane (SFN), have been shown to promote chemopreventive effects in skin both in vitro and in vivo. Recent data indicate that different secondary plant compounds may either antagonise or enhance SFN-induced Nrf2 activation. We therefore studied the interactions of a flavonoid, cyanidin and the potent Nrf2 inductor SFN in cultured human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). We observed that cyanidin does not induce the activation of Nrf2 and its target genes, γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γGCS), NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 and haem oxygenase-1 in HaCaT cells. Furthermore, SFN-mediated Nrf2 activation and its target gene expression were not further enhanced by the co-application of SFN with cyanidin.

The findings of studies investigating the relationship between coffee consumption and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels have been inconsistent, and few researchers considered the type of coffee. We examined the association between coffee consumption and high CRP levels, using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016–2018, with 9337 adults aged 19–64 years. A 24-h diet recall was used to assess diet, including the amount and type of coffee consumed. We classified coffee into black coffee and coffee with sugar and/or cream (non-drinkers, or ≤ 1, 2–3, > 3 cups/d) and used multivariable logistic regression models with high CRP levels (≥ 2·2 mg/l). After the adjustment for potential confounders, 2–3 cups/d of coffee consumption were inversely associated with high CRP levels, compared with no consumption (OR = 0·83, 95 % CI 0·69, 0·99). By type of coffee, the inverse association was stronger in subjects consuming black coffee (OR = 0·61, 95 % CI 0·45, 0·84), while the inverse association was much weaker in those consuming coffee with sugar and/or cream (OR = 0·92, 95 % CI 0·74, 1·14). By sex, the inverse association of 2–3 cups of black coffee was found both in men (OR = 0·65, 95 % CI 0·41, 1·03) and women (OR = 0·55, 95 % CI 0·36, 0·83). More than three cups/d of heavy coffee consumption were not significantly associated with high CRP levels. Our findings indicate that moderate black coffee consumption of 2–3 cups/d is inversely associated with high CRP levels in Korean adults. Further prospective studies are warranted to provide definitive evidence.

The branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) is a group of essential amino acids that are involved in maintaining the energy balance of a human being as well as the homoeostasis of GABAergic, glutamatergic, serotonergic and dopaminergic systems. Disruption of these systems has been associated with the pathophysiology of autism while low levels of these amino acids have been discovered in patients with autism. A pilot open-label, prospective, follow-up study of the use of BCAA in children with autistic behaviour was carried out. Fifty-five children between the ages of 6 and 18 participated in the study from May 2015 to May 2018. We used a carbohydrate-free BCAA-powdered mixture containing 45·5 g of leucine, 30 g of isoleucine and 24·5 g of valine in a daily dose of 0·4 g/kg of body weight which was administered every morning. Following the initiation of BCAA administration, children were submitted to a monthly psychological examination. Beyond the 4-week mark, BCAA were given to thirty-two people (58·18 %). Six of them (10·9 %) discontinued after 4–10 weeks owing to lack of improvement. The remaining twenty-six children (47·27 %) who took BCAA for longer than 10 weeks displayed improved social behaviour and interactions, as well as improvements in their speech, cooperation, stereotypy and, principally, their hyperactivity. There were no adverse reactions reported during the course of the treatment. Although these data are preliminary, there is some evidence that BCAA could be used as adjunctive treatment to conventional therapeutic methods for the management of autism.

Anaemia in pregnancy is a persistent health problem in Nepal and could be reduced through nutrition counselling and strengthened iron folic acid supplementation programmes. We analysed 24-hour diet recall data from 846 pregnant women in rural plains Nepal, using linear programming to identify the potential for optimised food-based strategies to increase iron adequacy. We then conducted qualitative research to analyse how anaemia was defined and recognised, how families used food-based strategies to address anaemia, and the acceptability of optimised food-based strategies. We did 16 interviews of recently pregnant mothers, three focus group discussions with fathers, three focus group discussions with mothers-in-law and four interviews with key informants. Dietary analyses showed optimised diets did not achieve 100 % of recommended iron intakes, but iron intakes could be doubled by increasing intakes of green leaves, egg and meat. Families sought to address anaemia through food-based strategies but were often unable to because of the perceived expense of providing an ‘energy-giving’ diet. Some foods were avoided because of religious or cultural taboos, or because they were low status and could evoke social consequences if eaten. There is a need for counselling to offer affordable ways for families to optimise iron adequacy. The participation of communities in tailoring advice to ensure cultural relevance and alignment with local norms is necessary to enable its effectiveness.

Currently, various protocols regarding the site of waist circumference (WC) measurement are in place. This study aimed to analyse the effect of the site of WC measurement on visceral adipose tissue (VAT) estimation. WC was obtained at 7 anatomical sites in 211 German volunteers (103 males) aged 23–81 years using three-dimensional photonic body scanning (PBS). At one site, WC was additionally measured by tape. The quantity of VAT was assessed by MRI. Models to estimate VAT based on WC were developed; the precision of the estimation is represented by R2. The influence of the applied method of WC assessment (tape v. PBS) on the estimations is reported. Results show that the amount of estimated VAT and the precision of VAT estimation were dependent on the site of measurement. VAT was estimated most precisely by WC taken at the level of the lowest rib (WCrib: R2 = 0·75 females; 0·79 males), the minimum circumference (WCmin: R2 = 0·75 females; 0·77 males) and at the narrowest part of the torso (WCnar: R2 = 0·76 females; 0·77 males), and least precisely by WC assessed at the top of iliac crest (WCiliac: R2 = 0·61 females; 0·60 males). VAT estimates based on WC obtained by PBS were smaller and estimations were slightly less precise compared to estimates based on tape measures. Our results indicate that the method and the site of waist measurement should be considered when estimating VAT based on WC. The implementation of a standardised protocol using either WCrib, WCmin or WCnar could improve the precision of VAT estimation.

A 60-d feeding trial was conducted to explore the potential regulatory effects of dietary Clostridium butyricum cultures (CBC) supplementation in high-carbohydrate diet (HCD) on carbohydrate utilisation, antioxidant capacity and intestinal microbiota of largemouth bass. Triplicate groups of largemouth bass (average weight 35·03 ± 0·04 g), with a destiny of twenty-eight individuals per tank, were fed low-carbohydrate diet and HCD supplemented with different concentration of CBC (0 %, 0·25 %, 0·50 % and 1·00 %). The results showed that dietary CBC inclusion alleviated the hepatic glycogen accumulation induced by HCD intake. Additionally, the expression of hepatic ampkα1 and insulin signaling pathway-related genes (ira, irb, irs, p13kr1 and akt1) increased linearly with dietary CBC inclusion, which might be associated with the activation of glycolysis-related genes (gk, pfkl and pk). Meanwhile, the expression of intestinal SCFA transport-related genes (ffar3 and mct1) was significantly increased with dietary CBC inclusion. In addition, the hepatic antioxidant capacity was improved with dietary CBC supplementation, as evidenced by linear decrease in malondialdehyde concentration and expression of keap1, and linear increase in antioxidant enzyme activities (total antioxidative capacity, total superoxide dismutase and catalase) and expression of antioxidant enzyme-related genes (nrf2, sod1, sod2 and cat). The analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA V3–4 region indicated that dietary CBC inclusion significantly reduced the enrichment of Firmicutes and potential pathogenic bacteria genus Mycoplasma but significantly elevated the relative abundance of Fusobacteria and Cetobacterium. In summary, dietary CBC inclusion improved carbohydrate utilization, antioxidant capacity and intestinal microbiota of largemouth bass fed HCD.

1. To examine the relations between short- and long-term regulation of food intake in calves given milk-substitute diets, abrupt changes were made in the dry matter (DM) concentration of the diet (Expt 1) and in the frequency of feeding (Expts 2 and 3).

2. When calves, fed once daily, had the DM concentration of their diet changed, they drank the same volume of milk on the 1st day they received the new diet as they had on the previous days; so the DM intakes changed in proportion to the change in milk DM concentration. Over the subsequent 6 d, milk intake progressively increased when milk DM concentration was reduced. When the DM concentration of milk was increased the volume of milk drunk was reduced to a minimum value 2–3 d after the change in diet and increased thereafter. The size of the changes was dependent on the initial and changed DM concentrations of the milk.

3. In calves receiving milk-substitute diets containing 80–260 g DM/kg, milk intakes were reduced by up to 30% on the 1st day that calves were fed once daily instead of twice daily. Over the subsequent 13 d of once-daily feeding, milk intakes increased, particularly for calves given diets of low DM concentration.

4. Feeding the calves once daily reduced the digestibility of DM in Expt 2 but not the digestibility of crude protein (nitrogen × 6.25) and fat; diets containing lower concentrations of DM were particularly affected.

5. It is concluded that the intake of milk-fed calves at a single meal is regulated by an abomasal stretch mechanism. After an abrupt change in milk DM concentration or in the frequency of feeding, the amount of milk drunk at subsequent meals is modified by some long-term control mechanisms.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between food patterns and serum vitamin D concentrations in US adults. Data from two cycles of National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 2003–2004 and 2005–2006, were used (n 6637). Three major food patterns were derived using factor analysis. These three patterns were labeled as meat and processed meat foods (MPF), vegetables, fruit, nuts, and whole grains (VFNW), and sweet, snack, and beverage pattern (SSB). Serum vitamin D was measured with RIA and later standardized to reflect the assay changes over time. In multivariate-adjusted regression analysis, the MPF pattern was significantly, inversely associated with serum vitamin D concentrations (P < 0·001). However, the relation between the VFNW pattern and serum vitamin D was non-linear (P < 0·001). There was no relationship between SSB pattern and serum vitamin D in US adults. In conclusion, persons with a high intake of meat and processed meats are associated with lower serum vitamin D concentrations. Reducing processed foods and emphasizing VFNW will be beneficial from a health perspective.

Mounting evidence suggests that the first few months of life are critical for the development of obesity. The relationships between the timing of solid food introduction and the risk of childhood obesity have been examined previously; however, evidence for the association of timing of infant formula introduction remains scarce. This study aimed to examine whether the timing of infant formula introduction is associated with growth z-scores and overweight at ages 1 and 3 years. This study included 5733 full-term (≥ 37 gestational weeks) and normal birth weight (≥ 2500 and < 4000 g) children in the Born in Guangzhou Cohort Study, a prospective cohort study with data collected at 6 weeks, 6, 12 and 36 months. Compared with infant formula introduction at 0–3 months, introduction at 4–6 months was associated with the lower BMI, weight-for-age and weight-for-length z-scores at 1 and 3 years old. Also, introduction at 4–6 months was associated with the lower odds of at-risk of overweight at age 1 (adjusted OR 0·72, 95 % CI 0·55, 0·94) and 3 years (adjusted OR 0·50, 95 % CI 0·30, 0·85). Introduction at 4–6 months also decreased the odds of overweight at age 1 year (adjusted OR 0·42, 95 % CI 0·21, 0·84) but not at age 3 years. Based on our findings, compared with introduction within the first 3 months, introduction at 4–6 months has a reduction on later high BMI risk and at-risk of overweight. However, these results need to be replicated in other well-designed studies before more firm recommendations can be made.

Selenium (Se) is essential for selenoprotein synthesis, being thus important for immune and thyroid function, and for antioxidant defence. Some studies have shown that low levels of Se may associate with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). Nevertheless, evidence supporting Se supplementation in pregnant or childbearing-age women is still lacking. In this context, this work aimed to systematically review the most recent scientific evidence to understand the relationship between Se levels and HDP. We performed a systematic review (protocol number: CRD42022310424) with literature of the last decade. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, registers and grey literature were searched to identify studies reporting measurement of Se levels in normotensive and hypertensive pregnant women (supplemented or not with Se). Study quality was assessed using the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Study Quality Assessment Tools. Among the thirty included studies, a majority, 61 % (n 19) of the ‘good’ or ‘fair’ studies, reported a negative association between Se and HDP, and some studies, 39 % (n 11) of the ‘good’ or ‘fair’ studies, reported a lack of association. This review provides an important amount of quality evidence suggesting that low Se levels associate with the occurrence of HDP. Nevertheless, the gathered information is not enough to underlie a recommendation for Se supplementation in pregnancy to protect against HDP. Thus, this review emphasises the need for further well-designed randomised controlled trials that may provide blunt evidence regarding the benefits of Se supplementation during pregnancy.
