Hydroxy-Al- and hydroxy-Mg-montmorillonite were prepared by treating dispersed Na-montmorillonite with aluminum and magnesium nitrate solutions and titrating with NaOH solutions so that the OH/Al ratio varied from zero to 3.0 and the OH/Mg ratio from zero to 2.0. External precipitation of Al and Mg hydroxides was observed when the OH/M ratios (M = metal) approached 3 and 2, respectively. From chemical analyses of the initial Na-montmorillonite and the hydroxy-metal montmorillonites, structural formulae were derived by assuming that the silicate layer compositions remained unchanged. Prior to the addition of NaOH, the average interlayer material approximated in composition to [Al(OH)2]+ and [Mg(OH)]+. With additions of NaOH the interlayer compositions moved progressively towards Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2. When the hydroxy interlayers approached completion, external precipitation was observed. X-ray powder diffraction data showed that the hydroxy-Mg products have less tendency to swell in ethylene glycol and water, and greater thermal stability than the hydroxy-Al products. Initially, when the average interlayer compositions were near Al(OH)2 and Mg(OH), swelling followed more nearly the normal behavior.

The water adsorption capacity of zeolites is a function of pressure and temperature. Desorption of zeolites may be of three types, wherein the crystal lattice undergoes (1) no or little change, (2) a reversible change, or (3) an irreversible change. In the first two cases, the divariance of the zeolite-water vapor equilibrium results in networks of isobars, isotherms, and isosteres which can be transformed into a “characteristic” curve following the Polanyi-Dubinin theory. Because the volume of the micropores of a zeolite structure is constant, the isotherms and “characteristic” curve can be transformed linearly. During desorption, if the volume of the micropores varies due to a change of structure, the curves show linearity breaks.

On the basis of X-ray diffraction, differential thermal, and thermal gravimetric analyses, the equilibrium curves and structural changes of heulandite and stilbite were determined, using specially designed equipment. In the reversible adsorption range, heulandite shows no linearity breaks in the transforms and no structural variation. Stilbite, however, shows a linearity break in the transforms corresponding to a structural change.

The nature of the complexes in aqueous solutions of Cu(II) and Ni(II) with diethylenetriamine (dien) and tetraethylenepentamine tetren) is pH-dependent. At M(II):dien = 2 and M(II):tetren = 1, the main complexes are [M(dien H)2(H2O)2]4+ and [M(tetren H)(H2O)2]3+. In excess ligand (pH = 10.30), the majority species are [M(dien)2]2+ and [M(tetren)(H2O)]2+, and considerable amounts of monoprotonated amines are adsorbed. The surface of hectorite prefers the tetragonally distorted complexes in all cases studied. The complexes readily lose their axially coordinated water molecules to form planar complexes on the interlamellar surface. The planar Ni(II)-complexes are diamagnetic, showing that the surface is a very weak axial ligand. The divalent complexes [M(dien)2]2+ and [M(tetren)(H2O]2+ can also be partially transformed to the corresponding planar forms on the surface, especially in the case of [Cu(dien)2]2+. The driving forces are thought to be the acid nature of the clay-adsorbed water and the gain in crystal field stabilization energy of the transition metal ions.

Hydrotalcite solid solutions were prepared by coprecipitation followed by hydrothermal treatment between 150° and 250°C. Based on the structural formula [Mg1−xAlx(OH)2]x+[(CO3)x/2 • mH2O]x−, pure solid solutions were formed in the range A1/(A1 + Mg) = 0.2 to 0.33, where m = (1 − 3x/2). Maximum crystallite size was achieved by hydrothermal treatment between 180° and 200°C, with x = 0.337 to 0.429. Crystal strain was also minimized at these values of x. The adsorption capacity for Naphthol Yellow S increased as x increased and reached a maximum (1.56 × 10−6 moles/m2) when x = 0.287, a value eight times larger than that of Mg(OH)2. A weak endothermic DTA peak at about 350°C is probably due to the loss of structural water in the main layer of the structure. On calcination between 400° and 700°C, only periclase was detected, probably containing Al in solid solution. Hydration of the calcined product resulted in the reconstruction of the original hydrotalcite structure.

Allophanes with SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios from 1.38 to 1.92 were heated at temperatures up to 500°C, and the changes induced were investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy (IR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Heat treatment caused the IR absorption band near 1000 cm−1 due to Si-O stretching to shift towards higher frequencies, and the band near 450 cm−1 due to O-Si-O bending to increase markedly in intensity. These results are probably due to condensation of SiO tetrahedra, following breakdown of Si-O-Al linkages and dehydroxylation of SiOH groups. Concurrent intensity increase of the IR absorption at about 700 cm−1 suggested an increase in the amount of 4-coordinated Al in the heated materials. ‘Imogolite structures’ were decomposed progressively at higher temperatures and were almost absent at about 400°C, as indicated by the weakening and disappearance of the IR band at 348 cm−1 and of the XRD reflections at 2.25 and 1.40 Å. The XRD reflection at 3.3–3.45 Å shifted to about 3.6 Å, probably as a result of thermal condensation of the silica component. The observed thermal changes were much greater for samples with low SiO2Al2O3 ratios (1.38–1.51) than for those with high ratios (1.81–1.92), indicating a lower thermal stability for the former materials. Thus, the thermal stability of allophanes appears to be related to the content of ‘imogolite structures’ and to the polymerization status of the silica component.

Interaction of La3+- and Ce3+-exchanged hectorites with oligomeric hydroxy-Al cations results in the formation of cross-linked hectorites possessing moderately high surface areas (~ 220–280 m2/g) and high thermal stability. The basal spacings of these products were generally in the range 17.0–18.0 A, the exact d(001) value depending on the age of the hydroxy-Al oligomeric solution and on the pH of the starting hectorite dispersion. Interaction of Li- or Ce-fluorhectorite with hydroxy-Al oligocations produced the corresponding cross-linked fluorhectorites, which showed markedly higher basal spacings (18.2–20.0 Å for air-dried samples), surface areas (~300–380 m2/g), and thermal stability, as compared with those of the cross-linked hectorites. The cross-linking agent applied in the synthesis of the hydroxy-Al hectorite and fluorhectorite products consisted of a solution of hydroxy-Al oligomers aged for periods of 7 to 27 days. A constant ratio of 2.0 mmole Al/g of smectite was used in all preparations. The high basal spacings and porosity of the newly synthesized products are consistent with a structure similar to that previously proposed for cross-linked hydroxy-Al montmorillonite.

Polynuclear hydroxy-Al cations were prepared by partially neutralizing dilute solutions of aluminum chloride. These cations were introduced in the interlayer space of montmorillonite by cation exchange, which formed heat-stable pillars between the silicate layers. Polynuclear hydroxy-Al was preferentially adsorbed on montmorillonite compared with monomer-Al; the maximum amount adsorbed was ∼400 meq/100 g of montmorillonite. Of this amount 320 meq was non-exchangeable. The 001 X-ray powder diffraction reflection of the polynuclear hydroxy-Al-montmorillonite complex was at 27 Å, with four additional higher-order basal reflections, giving an average d(001) value of 28.4 Å. This complex was thermally stable to 700°C. An analysis of the basal reflections by the Fourier transform method indicated that the 28-Å complex had a relatively regular interstratified structure of 9.6- and 18.9-Å component layers with a mixing ratio of 0.46:0.54. This ratio implies that the hydroxy-Al pillars occupied every second layer. Considering the relatively small amount of Al adsorbed and the thermally stable nature of the structure, the hydroxy-Al pillars must have been sparsely but homogeneously distributed in the interlayer space.

Three montmorillonite samples, from Wyoming (particle size <0.2 µm, 4.6 wt. % Fe2O3), Greece (<14 µm, 6.5 wt. % Fe2O3), and Poland (0.5 wt. % Fe2O3, two fractions <2 µm and 2–10 µm) were intercalated with hydroxy-Al species. The amount of hydroxy-Al cations exchanged by the clays depended on the particle size: it decreased from 31 wt. % Al2O3 for 0.2 µm in size to 22.6 wt. % for >2 µm. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern showed that most of the material was not intercalated after refluxing at 80°C for 2 hr; several redispersions of the pillared clay in hot water were required to obtain a single sharp XRD line at 18.6 Å. The diffusion of the Al cations therefore limited the cation-exchange process. The addition of NH4+ to the pillaring solution decreased the amount of Al fixed by the clay from 31 (no NH4+ to 26 wt. % (NH4+/Al = 10), but increased slightly the microporous volume of the resulting pillared material from 0.13 to 0.14 ml/g. The competition between NH4+ and Al-hydroxy cations for ion-exchange sites forced the Al species into the interlayer space and increased the homogeneity of the resulting pillared material. The influence of particle size on the amount of Al exchanged was then reduced. After calcination in air at 700°C the pillared Wyoming clay retained a microporous volume of 0.09 ml/g if no NH4+ was added, compared with 0.11 ml/g for a NH4+/Al ratio of 10. The Fe content of the clay affected the thermal stability of pillared clays at 800°C: for two samples prepared by competitive ion exchange (NH4+/Al = 10) the microporous volume increased from 0.06 ml/g for 6.4 wt. % Fe2O3 to 0.08 ml/g for 0.5 wt. % Fe2O3. The acidity of the pillared clay was determined by calorimetric adsorption of ammonia at 150°C, on samples calcined at 500°C. Pillared montmorillonite prepared using noncompetitive intercalation showed a weak acid strength: most sites adsorbed ammonia with an enthalpy of 65 kJ/mole. The intercalation of the same original clay using competitive ion exchange yielded a solid that possessed both weak (heat = 60 kJ/mole) and strong (120 kJ/mole) acid sties. Competitive ion exchange appears to be a simple means of preparation of large quantities of pillared clays of reasonable thermal stability and higher acidity than those obtained by conventional methods.

Pillared, regularly and randomly interstratified illite/smectite (I/S) was prepared by interacting aluminum chlorohydrate with I/S in aqueous dispersion. I/S samples from Kinnekulle, Sweden, ranging in composition from 30–60% smectite layers, were used as starting clays. The pillaring resulted in a separation of the smectite layers in the I/S of about 9 Å, as estimated by X-ray powder diffraction and by nitrogen adsorption studies. Only the smectite layers of the clay were modified by the pillaring procedure. The pillared products had surface areas of 200–260 m2/g and pore volumes of about 0.18 cm3/g. The uptake of Al by the clay and the micropore surface area of the pillared products were proportional to the fraction of smectite layers in the I/S. The thermal and hydrothermal stability of the pillared I/S was similar to that of pillared montmorillonite prepared using the same procedure.

Titanium was introduced into the montmorillonite structure by cation exchange with polymeric Ti cations, formed by partial hydrolysis of TiCl4 in HCl. On further hydrolysis and heating, TiO2 pillars in the form of anastase were formed between the montmorillonite layers. The resulting TiO2-cross-linked montmorillonites possessed surface areas in the range 200–350 m2/g and pore volumes of about 0.2 cm3/g and were thermally and hydrothermally stable to 700°C. The basal spacing of products heated at temperatures > 200°C was about 28Å, as determined by X-ray powder diffraction and by N2-desorption pore-size analysis. The surface area increased and the pore volume decreased with increasing HCl-concentration in the Ti-solution. The uptake of TiO2 by the montmorillonite, the surface area, and the pore volume increased with increasing amount of Ti added in the preparation, to about 10 mmoles of Ti/g of montmorillonite. A further increase in the amount of Ti added resulted in a decrease in surface area, but the pore volume and the uptake of TiO2 remained almost constant. The high porosity and the interlayer spacing of the product are consistent with a structure similar to that previously proposed for smectites, cross-linked with hydroxy-Al oligocations.

The sintering of montmorillonites pillared by hydroxy-Al species was investigated by several techniques. The change of the microporosity of the pillared interlayer clay with temperature shows that sintering was mainly due to the loss of microporosity. On calcination of the parent clay at 760°C, the X-ray powder diffraction pattern did not change; the 060 line shifted only slightly from 8.988 to 9.017 Å. The infrared (IR) spectrum suggested some dehydroxylation, but the structure appears to have been preserved. On calcination of the pillared clay at >700°C, the intensity of the 001 line decreased steadily, the 060 line broadened, and the b parameter decreased slightly from 8.988 to 8.928 Å. Fe3+ ions apparently occupied only one site after calcination at 300°C and two sites after calcination at 700°C. Smaller isomer shifts and higher quadrupole splittings in the Mössbauer spectra suggest that calcination produced more covalent bonding of Fe3+ and a highly distorted structure. The IR spectrum was significantly modified by calcination of the sample, and the 935- and 1125-cm−1 bands disappeared and the 1035-cm−1 band broadened. These results suggest that at <700°C the pillars sintered and that the clay progressively decomposed at >750°C. The pillaring-induced decrease of thermal stability of the clay was likely due to the introduction of protons during the first step of the preparation. The thermal stability of these Al-pillared interlayer complexes is comparable to that reported for hydroxy-silicoaluminum montmorillonites and fluorhectorites.

Solutions containing hydroxy-SiAl (HSA) oligocations were prepared by two procedures: (1) treatment of a mixture of orthosilicic acid and AlCl3 with aqueous NaOH, followed by aging of the product; and (2) preliminary preparation and aging of hydroxy-Al13 oligocations followed by reaction of the latter with orthosilicic acid. Ion exchange of Na,Ca-montmorillonite with HSA oligocations yielded pillared, cross-linked montmorillonites (designated as HSA-CLM) showing a maximum d(001) value of 19.5 Å for air-dried samples, and maximum surface areas of ~500 m2/g after outgassing at 250°C/10−3 torr. Corresponding ion exchange of Li-fluorhectorite yielded HSA fluorhectorites (HSA-CLFH) showing a maximum d(001) value of 19.0 Å and a surface area of 355 m2/g. Calculated structural formulae for the HSA-CLM and HSA-CLFH products, based on elemental analysis, showed a gradual increase in the Si/Al ratio in the intercalated HSA oligocations with increasing Si/Al ratio in the pillaring solution. Optimum d(001) values and surface areas of HSA-CLM and HSA-CLFH products were obtained using method 2 and applying a ratio of 1.6–2.5 mmole (Si)Al/g smectite.

The thermal stabilities of HSA-CLM and HSA-CLFH products were determined by heat treatment between 250° and 700°C and subsequent measurement of the d(001) values and surface areas. HSA-CLFH products showed the unusual behavior of increase of d(001) with increase in temperature from 400° to 500°C, and essential constancy of d(001) from 500° to 600°C. The HSA-CLM products showed a gradual decrease in surface area, whereas the HSA-CLFH products prepared with a Si/Al ratio of 1.04–2.18 in the pillaring solution showed constant surface areas with increasing temperature from 250° to 600°C. HSA-CLM and HSA-CLFH show sharply higher acidities compared with those of reference Al-CLM and Al-CLFH samples obtained by pillaring with hydroxy-Al13 oligocations. This increased acidity is probably due to the presence of acidic, surface silanol groups in the HSA oligocations.

Platy (Te Puke, New Zealand), cylindrical (Spruce Pine, North Carolina), and spherical (North Gardiner mine, Huron, Lawrence County, Indiana) halloysite samples were analyzed by high-pressure differential thermal analysis (HP-DTA) to determine the effect of morphological and chemical differences on their respective thermal stability. In halloysite, these morphological differences imply structural features. The metastable phase relations of each are analogous to those of kaolinite. At 1 bar, the platy, cylindrical, and spherical samples showed peak temperatures (maximum deflection in the dehydroxylation endotherm) of 560°, 578°, and 575°C, respectively, whereas at about 600 bars the peak temperatures were 622°, 655°, and 647°C. At low pressures the observed reaction is related to dehydroxylation: halloysite (H) metahalloysite (MH) + vapor (V), whereas higher pressures produce melting reactions, either H + V = metaliquid (ML) for conditions of P(H2O) = P(total), or H + MH = ML for P(H2O) < P(total). The PT conditions of the invariant point, H + MH + ML + V, for each system are: Te Puke, 612° ± 4°C, 25 ± 7 bars; Spruce Pine, 657 ± 2°C, 30 ± 7 bars; North Gardiner, 652° ± 2°C, 34 ± 7 bars. The lower thermal stability of the Te Puke sample may be related to its higher iron content, although additional data are necessary to confirm that it is not related also to the platy structure. Furthermore, morphological differences between the cylindrical and spherical varieties appear to have had little effect on the energy required to dehydroxylate these halloysite structures. Exceptionally high values obtained for the dehydroxylation enthalpies using the van't Hoff equation, compared with values derived using other methods, may be explained by a 10–15-bar excess in the intracrystalline H2O fugacity during dehydroxylation. Intracrystalline fugacity is defined here as the H2O fugacity within crystallites and is not related to the partial pressure of H2O around individual particles.

The hydrolysis of 2-(2-trichlorosilylethyl)pyridine (TCSEP) or 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) yields a complex mixture of oligomers, the composition of which is a function of time. 29Si NMR measurements show that the same oligosilsesquioxanes can be obtained from both compounds after prolonged hydrolysis. Ion exchange by montmorillonite with the pillaring solution obtained from TCSEP results in partial intercalation, with a noticeable fraction of the clay exchange sites occupied by protons not by the Si cationic species. Calcination of this pillared clay results in a mixture of phases showing 1.86 or 1.56 nm basal spacings. Pillaring of the same montmorillonite by the solution obtained by partial hydrolysis of APTMS results in a homogeneous solid with a basal spacing of 2 nm, which reduces to 1.65 nm upon calcination above 773 K. The microporous volume (pores < 1 nm) of these Si-clays, determined after calcination at 773 K, 0.15 ml/g for the PILC obtained from TCSEP, and 0.186 ml/g for the PILC obtained from APTMS is comparable to that measured for Al or Zr pillared clays. A better thermal stability is observed for the clay pillared by APTMS, which retains a large microporosity (0.167 ml/g) up to 973 K in air. These Si-pillared clays show a small number of weakly acidic sites and some strongly acidic sites retaining ammonia up to 723 K, which are most likely localized on the clay layers.

FTIR studies of six partially-deuterated montmorillonites (MS) reveal the presence of two O-D stretching bands, one between 2702–2728 cm-1 and another near 2680 cm-1. For homoionic (Li, Na, Mg, Ca, or La) Wyoming-type MS, the position of the higher frequency band, designated as (O-D)h, is between 2714–2728 cm-1, whereas for homoionic Cheto-type MS it is between 2702–2706 cm-1. The lower frequency band, designated as (O-D)1, is in the narrow range of 2674–2684 cm-1. Resolution of two corresponding O-H bands, appearing near 3670 and 3635 cm-1, was observed only after partial dehydroxylation of the smectites. The changes in the relative intensities of the two O-D stretching bands as a function of the smectite type and of the Lewis acidity (charge density) of the exchangeable ion were determined. For Wyoming-type MS, the intensity of the (O-D)h band is much lower than that of the (O-D)l band, whereas for Cheto-type MS, the intensity of the (O-D)h band is about equal or slightly higher than that of the (O-D)l band. The observed resolution can be ascribed tentatively to the presence of (at least) two types of octahedral OH groups in the smectites, the (O-D)h band being assigned to AlMgOH and the (O-D)1 band to AlAlOH groups. Pillaring of Cheto-type MS with hydroxy-Al13 oligocations resulted in products showing much higher thermal stability between 400–600°C compared to that of identically pillared Wyoming-type MS. Compositional and other factors, e.g., CEC values and mode of pillaring, may cause this difference in stability.

A lustrous appearance and interference-based colors make pearlescent pigments attractive for use in applications such as automotive paints, plastics, consumer electronics, and cosmetics. A combination of interference and absorption in the visible light spectrum improves significantly the hiding power as well as the color strength of pearlescent pigments while potentially extending their color range. The aim of the present study was to introduce synthetic fluorohectorites, having an appreciable diameter (~20 μm) and aspect ratio (~1000), as promising colored cores for pearlescent pigments. Fluorohectorites can adopt a variety of colors by ion-exchange reaction with cationic organic dyes of high absorption coefficient. Unlike related dye-exchanged natural montmorillonite clays, which undergo acid activation accompanied by release of dye at low pH, as is required for subsequent coating with TiO2 in an environment with low pH and elevated temperature, no leaching was observed with dye-exchanged synthetic fluorohectorites ([Na0.5]int.[Mg2.5Li0.5]oct.[Si4]tet.O10F2). Due to its significantly greater layer charge, more organic dye molecules were adsorbed per volume of the fluorohectorite than for montmorillonite. Consequently, the free volume available in the interlayer space for H3O+ diffusion was less for synthetic fluorohectorite than for montmorillonite. Acid attack via interlayer space was, therefore, retarded significantly for fluorohectorite. Acid attack from the external edges of synthetic fluorohectorites was in the range of conventionally applied mica pigment core (fluorophlogopite, ([K]int.[Mg3]oct.[AlSi3]tet.O10(F,OH)2) because of the comparable large diameter of the platelets. Montmorillonite, however, occurs with particle diameters typically <200 nm and the much increased relative contribution of edges to the total surface area also makes them more prone to acid attack and concomitant leaching. Aside from leaching stability, the confinement of organic dyes in the interlayer space restricts rotational and vibrational motions, which in turn stabilizes the dyes typically by ~100°C against thermal decomposition as compared to chloride salts of the dyes.

Few studies have explored the change in thermal stability of poly(oxypropylene) (POP) ammonium ions after intercalation, even though several studies have focused on the modification of montmorillonite (Mt) with POP amine hydrochloride. The purpose of the present study was to understand the effect of chain length of POP amine hydrochlorides on the basal spacing of modified Mt, and the amount and thermal stability of the ammonium ions intercalated. The relations between basal spacing, organic fraction, and thermal stability of the ammonium ions intercalated were also explored. Series of modified Mt were prepared via ion-exchange between Na+-montmorillonite (Na+-Mt) and POP diammonium ions or POP triammonium ions with different chain lengths, and were then characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetric analysis. The results revealed that the basal spacing of modified Mt increased with the hydrophobic chain length of the POP ammonium ions. The amount of triammonium ions intercalated was close to the theoretical amount, while the organic fraction of modified Mt was directly proportionalto the basalspacing of modified Mt. The intercalated ammonium ions were, therefore, contained within the interlayer space ofMt. After intercalation, the thermal stability of the POP ammonium ions with various chain lengths was reduced; i.e.Tonset was reduced by 7–60°C for short-chain POP ammonium ions (D400 and T403) and by 177–192°C for long-chain ions (D2000, D4000, T3000, and T5000).

Al-hydroxy intercalated clays (ALHICs) obtained from different parent clays were used to investigate the interactions between oligomers and clay surface layers.

The thermal stability of ALHICs obtained from natural, Cs-, Ca-, Ba-, Fe-, Cu- or Ce-montmorillonites has been investigated by studying the relationship between basal spacing and calcination temperature. X-ray diffraction has shown that the basal spacing of ALHICs obtained from Cu-montmorillonite calcined at 550°C is 13.4 Å, different from basal spacings of ALHICs obtained from Fe-montmorillonite (16.0 Å) and other parent clays (16.7 Å). Thermograms for AlHICs obtained from natural, Fe- and Ce-montmorillonites displayed distinct steps at 225 and 650°C, attributed to the dehydration of Al13 oligomers, and the dehydroxylation of the surface layer, respectively. By contrast, thermograms of ALHICs obtained from Cu-montmorillonite displayed one step between 250 and 700°C for both dehydration and dehydroxylation. Mössbauer parameters showed that Fe3+ octahedra in octahedral sheets are distorted in pillared interlayered clay (PILC) obtained from Cu-montmorillonite and undistorted in that obtained from Fe-montmorillonite. The difference in thermal stability for the various ALHICs is attributed to the retention of some of the original cations after intercalation with Al13 oligomers, which induces several interactions between the oligomers and the clay surface layers.
