In this paper we produce infinite families of counterexamples to Jantzen's question posed in 1980 on the existence of Weyl $p$-filtrations for Weyl modules for an algebraic group and Donkin's tilting module conjecture formulated in 1990. New techniques to exhibit explicit examples are provided along with methods to produce counterexamples in large rank from counterexamples in small rank. Counterexamples can be produced via our methods for all groups other than when the root system is of type ${\rm A}_{n}$ or ${\rm B}_{2}$.

Let $\textbf {G}$ be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over a field of characteristic greater than the Coxeter number. We construct a monoidal action of the diagrammatic Hecke category on the principal block $\operatorname {Rep}_0(\textbf {G})$ of $\operatorname {Rep}(\textbf {G})$ by wall-crossing functors. This action was conjectured to exist by Riche and Williamson. Our method uses constructible sheaves and relies on Smith–Treumann theory.

We present some results related to Zilber’s Exponential-Algebraic Closedness Conjecture, showing that various systems of equations involving algebraic operations and certain analytic functions admit solutions in the complex numbers. These results are inspired by Zilber’s theorems on raising to powers.

We show that algebraic varieties which split as a product of a linear subspace of an additive group and an algebraic subvariety of a multiplicative group intersect the graph of the exponential function, provided that they satisfy Zilber’s freeness and rotundity conditions, using techniques from tropical geometry.

We then move on to prove a similar theorem, establishing that varieties which split as a product of a linear subspace and a subvariety of an abelian variety A intersect the graph of the exponential map of A (again under the analogues of the freeness and rotundity conditions). The proof uses homology and cohomology of manifolds.

Finally, we show that the graph of the modular j-function intersects varieties which satisfy freeness and broadness and split as a product of a Möbius subvariety of a power of the upper-half plane and a complex algebraic variety, using Ratner’s orbit closure theorem to study the images under j of Möbius varieties.

We consider rational representations of a connected linear algebraic group $\mathbb {G}$ over a field $k$ of positive characteristic $p > 0$. We introduce a natural extension $M \mapsto \Pi (\mathbb {G})_M$ to $\mathbb {G}$-modules of the $\pi$-point support theory for modules $M$ for a finite group scheme $G$ and show that this theory is essentially equivalent to the more ‘intrinsic’ and ‘explicit’ theory $M \mapsto \mathbb {P}\mathfrak{C}(\mathbb {G})_M$ of supports for an algebraic group of exponential type, a theory which uses $1$-parameter subgroups $\mathbb {G}_a \to \mathbb {G}$. We extend our support theory to bounded complexes of $\mathbb {G}$-modules, $C^\bullet \mapsto \Pi (\mathbb {G})_{C^\bullet }$. We introduce the tensor triangulated category $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$, the Verdier quotient of the bounded derived category $D^b(\mathit {Mod}(\mathbb {G}))$ by the thick subcategory of mock injective modules. Our support theory satisfies all the ‘standard properties’ for a theory of supports for $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$. As an application, we employ $C^\bullet \mapsto \Pi (\mathbb {G})_{C^\bullet }$ to establish the classification of $(r)$-complete, thick tensor ideals of $\mathit {stmod}(\mathbb {G})$ in terms of locally $\mathit {stmod}(\mathbb {G})$-realizable subsets of $\Pi (\mathbb {G})$ and the classification of $(r)$-complete, localizing subcategories of $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$ in terms of locally $\mathit {StMod}(\mathbb {G})$-realizable subsets of $\Pi (\mathbb {G})$.

L'analyse de la démonstration par contradiction de Frécon 2018 qui est faite dans Poizat 2018 met en évidence la structure symétrique des groupes de rang de Morley fini sans involutions; en effet, cette démonstration consiste en la construction d'un espace symétrique de dimension deux (“un plan”), puis à montrer que ce plan ne peut exister.

Aux sous-espaces symétriques définissables de ces groupes sont associées des symétries et des transvexions, qu'on entreprend d'étudier ici dans l'abstrait, sans référence à un groupe qui les enveloppe; cela nous mène à considérer des structures introduites axiomatiquement que nous appelons symétrons (plutôt qu'ensembles symétriques diadiques, comme les ont nommées Lawson & Lim 2004).

Le $Z^*$ -Theorem de Glauberman permet d'élucider complètement la structure des symétrons finis: chacun est isomorphe à l'ensemble des symétries associées à un sous-espace symétrique d'un groupe fini sans involutions, qui est loin d'être uniquement déterminé: de fait, il existe des groupes finis non isomorphes qui ont les mêmes symétries, et aussi des symétrons finis qui ne sont pas isomorphes aux symétries d'un groupe,

La situation est plus incertaine dans le cas des symétrons de rang de Morley fini, ou même algébriques, qui sont l'objet d'étude principal de cet article. Mais bien qu'un symétron soit une structure nettement plus faible qu'un groupe, nous pouvons étendre aux symétrons des résultats bien connus à propos des groupes de rang de Morley fini: condition de chaîne, décomposition en composantes connexes, caractérisation des parties définissables génériques, génération elliptique, etc. Ces propriétés sont nouvelles même dans le cas des sous-espaces symétriques d’un groupe, et permettent de court-circuiter les calculs de Frécon dans la construction de son plan paradoxal.

En outre, sous l'hypothèse de la Conjecture d'Algébricité, nous généralisons le Théorème de Glauberman au contexte de rang de Morley fini.

These notes provide a concise introduction to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups in positive characteristic, with an emphasis on Lusztig's character formula and geometric representation theory. They are based on the first author's notes from a lecture series delivered by the second author at the Simons Centre for Geometry and Physics in August 2019. We intend them to complement more detailed treatments.

Let $K$ be a two-dimensional global field of characteristic $\neq 2$ and let $V$ be a divisorial set of places of $K$. We show that for a given $n\geqslant 5$, the set of $K$-isomorphism classes of spinor groups $G=\operatorname{Spin}_{n}(q)$ of nondegenerate $n$-dimensional quadratic forms over $K$ that have good reduction at all $v\in V$ is finite. This result yields some other finiteness properties, such as the finiteness of the genus $\mathbf{gen}_{K}(G)$ and the properness of the global-to-local map in Galois cohomology. The proof relies on the finiteness of the unramified cohomology groups $H^{i}(K,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{2})_{V}$ for $i\geqslant 1$ established in the paper. The results for spinor groups are then extended to some unitary groups and to groups of type $\mathsf{G}_{2}$.

Fix an irreducible (finite) root system $R$ and a choice of positive roots. For any algebraically closed field $k$ consider the almost simple, simply connected algebraic group ${{G}_{k}}$ over $k$ with root system $k$. One associates with any dominant weight $\lambda $ for $R$ two ${{G}_{k}}$-modules with highest weight $\lambda $, the Weyl module $V{{(\lambda )}_{k}}$ and its simple quotient $V{{(\lambda )}_{k}}$. Let $\lambda $ and $\mu $ be dominant weights with $\mu <\lambda $ such that $\mu $ is maximal with this property. Garibaldi, Guralnick, and Nakano have asked under which condition there exists $k$ such that $L{{(\mu )}_{k}}$ is a composition factor of $V{{(\lambda )}_{k}}$, and they exhibit an example in type ${{E}_{8}}$ where this is not the case. The purpose of this paper is to to show that their example is the only one. It contains two proofs for this fact: one that uses a classiffication of the possible pairs $(\lambda ,\mu )$, and another that relies only on the classiûcation of root systems.

We show that the conjectural criterion of $p$-incompressibility for products of projective homogeneous varieties in terms of the factors, previously known in a few special cases only, holds in general. Actually, the proof goes through for a wider class of varieties, including the norm varieties associated with symbols in Galois cohomology of arbitrary degree.

We extend the group-theoretic construction of local models of Pappas and Zhu [Local models of Shimura varieties and a conjecture of Kottwitz, Invent. Math. 194 (2013), 147–254] to the case of groups obtained by Weil restriction along a possibly wildly ramified extension. This completes the construction of local models for all reductive groups when $p\geqslant 5$. We show that the local models are normal with special fiber reduced and study the monodromy action on the sheaves of nearby cycles. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Kottwitz that the semi-simple trace of Frobenius gives a central function in the parahoric Hecke algebra. We also introduce a notion of splitting model and use this to study the inertial action in the case of an unramified group.

We classify generically transitive actions of semi-direct products on ℙ2. Motivated by the program to study the distribution of rational points on del Pezzo surfaces (Manin's conjecture), we determine all (possibly singular) del Pezzo surfaces that are equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces for semi-direct products .

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We consider the commuting variety of the nilradical of the Lie algebra of a Borel subgroup B of G. In case B acts on with only a finite number of orbits, we verify that is equidimensional and that the irreducible components are in correspondence with the distinguishedB-orbits in . We observe that in general is not equidimensional, and determine the irreducible components of in the minimal cases where there are infinitely many B-orbits in .

We study a Hermitian form $h$ over a quaternion division algebra $Q$ over a field ($h$ is supposed to be alternating if the characteristic of the field is two). For generic $h$ and $Q$, for any integer $i\in [1,\;n/2]$, where $n:=\dim _{Q}h$, we show that the variety of $i$-dimensional (over $Q$) totally isotropic right subspaces of $h$ is $2$-incompressible. The proof is based on a computation of the Chow ring for the classifying space of a certain parabolic subgroup in a split simple adjoint affine algebraic group of type $C_{n}$. As an application, we determine the smallest value of the $J$-invariant of a non-degenerate quadratic form divisible by a $2$-fold Pfister form; we also determine the biggest values of the canonical dimensions of the orthogonal Grassmannians associated to such quadratic forms.

Given a quasi-hereditary algebra , we present conditions which guarantee that the algebra obtained by grading by its radical filtration is Koszul and at the same time inherits the quasi-hereditary property and other good Lie-theoretic properties that might possess. The method involves working with a pair consisting of a quasi-hereditary algebra and a (positively) graded subalgebra . The algebra arises as a quotient of by a defining ideal of . Along the way, we also show that the standard (Weyl) modules for have a structure as graded modules for . These results are applied to obtain new information about the finite dimensional algebras (e.g., the -Schur algebras) which arise as quotients of quantum enveloping algebras. Further applications, perhaps the most penetrating, yield results for the finite dimensional algebras associated with semisimple algebraic groups in positive characteristic . These results require, at least at present, considerable restrictions on the size of .

Let be a commutative algebraic group defined over a number field K. For a prime ℘ in K where has good reduction, let N℘,n be the number of n-torsion points of the reduction of modulo ℘ where n is a positive integer. When is of dimension one and n is relatively prime to a fixed finite set of primes depending on , we determine the average values of N℘,n as the prime ℘ varies. This average value as a function of n always agrees with a divisor function.

Let X be the variety obtained by the Weil transfer with respect to a quadratic separable field extension of a generalized Severi–Brauer variety. We study (and, in some cases, determine) the canonical dimension, incompressibility, and motivic indecomposability of X. We determine the canonical 2-dimension of X (in the general case).

In this paper, we describe the sheaves of 1-homotopy groups of a simply-connected Chevalley group G; these sheaves can be identified with the sheafification of certain unstable Karoubi-Villamayor K-groups.

Using the Gille–Merkurjev norm principle we compute in a uniform way the image of the degree map for quadrics (Springer’s theorem), for twisted forms of maximal orthogonal Grassmannians (a theorem of Bayer-Fluckiger and Lenstra), and for E6- (a theorem of Rost) and E7-varieties.
