In this paper, I will compare three reportative constructions: the French reportative conditional, Dutch zou + inf, and German sollen + inf. Although these markers share the reportative function as one of their established meanings, they clearly differ in how this reportative meaning actually functions. One of the most important differences pertains to the fact that the French conditional (and to a lesser extent Dutch zou + inf) often combines reportative meaning with epistemic denial, i.e. the speaker distances him- or herself from the content of what he or she reports. German reportative sollen also allows for such distancing interpretations but to a much smaller extent. Specifically for this paper, I will look at the behaviour of the three markers in the immediate context of the noun ‘rumours’ (French rumeurs, Dutch geruchten, and German Gerüchte), a context which – at least in theory – is strongly compatible with reportative marking, on the one hand, and with epistemic denial, on the other. On the basis of a self-compiled corpus of recent newspaper language, I will show that the French conditional occurs with a relatively high frequency in this specific context, especially in contrast to German sollen, and that the conditional often combines reportative semantics with epistemic denial, which again especially contrasts with German sollen + inf. Dutch zou + inf takes up an intermediate position in both respects.

How does one prepare for flight? Is it possible to plan for such a disruptive event? This article explores a unique publication project established precisely for that purpose: migration manuals published by a German-Jewish organization to support the masses of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in the 1930s. These manuals consolidated elaborate information from all over the world to prepare Jews for impending displacement. They encompassed not only essential details but also impressions, recommendations, and complaints. The manuals’ editors assembled reports from individuals already settled in refuge, generating a collaborative self-help effort on a global scale. Analyzing their content, this article shows that the process of guiding readers into forced migration extended in this case beyond technical migration procedures to include knowledge transfer about the politics of race, class, and gender, reflecting how German-Jewish refugees studied and situated themselves within these categories.

This article presents the contributions of Dr. Kathryn Schwartz (1984-2022), book historian of the modern Middle East. Her study of the origins and impact of the printing press in late Ottoman Egypt has challenged some long-standing assumptions in the historiography. She has also put into question the long-held belief that Ottomans banned printing. More broadly, her work has challenged Eurocentric approaches to this topic and has innovated by combining material and intellectual history.

Immunological castration can be an alternative to traditional surgical castration. The active immunization against GnRH or kisspeptin has a castrating effect. To date, the fusion protein vaccine of combination with GnRH and kisspeptin have not been studied. Thus, the present study will develop a GnRH6-kisspeptin vaccine by genetic engineering method and investigate its immunocastration effect in male rats. Twenty 20-day-old male rats were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (n=10) and the immunization group (n=10). The initial immunization took place at week 0 followed by three booster doses administered intervals. The control group received an equivalent dose of white oil adjuvant. Orbital blood samples were collected at various time points following the initial immunization, at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks, respectively. The entire left testis was weighed and its volume measured at week 12. Samples from the right testis were obtained for histological analysis. Serum levels of GnRH and kisspeptin antibodies, as well as testosterone levels were determined using ELISA. The results showed that the serum levels of GnRH and kisspeptin antibody titres of the immunized rats were significantly higher compared to the control group (P<0.05). Additionally, the testosterone concentration was effectively reduced following the intensified immunization. The testes of the immunized group exhibited a reduction in size and a significant decrease in the number of spermatogonia in the testicular tissue compared to the control group (P<0.05). These data indicate that the recombinant GnRH6-kisspeptin protein effectively induced immunological castration in rats.

Low vitamin D associated with high parathyroid hormone (PTH) is commonly reported in the context of HIV infection. We determined the association between total 25-hydroxyvitamin-D [25(OH)D] and PTH in adolescents living with HIV, in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Adolescents (11-19 years) perinatally-infected with HIV and established on antiretroviral therapy (ART) for ≥6 months were recruited into a cross-sectional study. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded, anthropometry measured, and fasted serum concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin-D (1,25(OH)2D), total 25(OH)D and intact PTH measured. The association between total 25(OH)D and PTH was examined using natural cubic spline regression modelling. 842 participants (female: 53.2%) with median age 15.5 (IQR:13.2-17.9) years were enrolled. Median ART duration was 9.8 [IQR:6.3-12.3] years and 165/841 (19.6%) had an HIV viral load >60copies/ml. Stunting (HAZ score<-2) and underweight (WAZ score<-2) were observed in 29.9% and 30.0% respectively. Three quarters (n=639) reported daily calcium intakes <150mg/day. The mean (SD) concentrations of total 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D were 66.1(16.5) nmol/L and 210.6(70.4) pmol/L respectively, and median PTH level was 4.3 (IQR:3.3-5.5) pmol/L. There was an inverse non-linear relationship between total 25(OH)D and PTH, 25(OH)D levelling-off at 74.6nmol/L (95%CI: 74.5-75.2). Results were consistent in those taking tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (81.7%) and in those who were virally unsuppressed. In this population with extremely low habitual calcium intakes, the lack of association between 25(OH)D and PTH when 25(OH)D exceeded 75nmol/L, potentially suggests levels of 25(OH)D >75nmol/l may need to be achieved to improve bone health; investigation is needed in future research studies.

Radiocarbon (14C) measurements play important roles in dating and tracing applications where the isotopic concentration can differ from 0.1 to 106 pMC (percent modern carbon). A liquid scintillation counter cannot provide enough sensitivity when dealing with low-concentration samples of limited amounts over a reasonable time period. Accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) measures low-concentrations well but must first do dilution for high-concentration samples, and suffers from high instrument and maintenance costs. Saturated absorption CAvity Ring-down spectroscopy (SCAR) has now been developed into a practical technique with performances close to AMS but at much lower costs. The dynamic range covers 1–105 pMC, and the measurement uncertainties in the range of 0.4–1 pMC can be achieved within 0.5–2.5 hr of operation time. SCAR measures CO2 gases directly without graphitization in sample preparation. The typical sample consumption is ∼1 mg of carbon mass and the time for sample preparation can be as short as 15 min. Applications of SCAR to Suess-effect evaluation, biogenic-component analysis, ancient- and modern-sample dating, food-fraud detection and medicine-metabolism study have all been demonstrated by employing a close-to-automatic sample preparation system.

This research paper presents the characterization of an enterocin-producing Enterococcus durans MF5 isolate and the determination of the in vitro antilisterial activity of enterocin produced by this isolate, named Ent-MF5. PCR-based screening for bacteriocin biosynthetic genes revealed that E. durans MF5 harbors multiple enterocin-encoding genes (ent A, B, P and X), classified as class II bacteriocins and enterocin-P of Enterococcus faecium (sharing up to 99% similarity at the genetic level). E. durans MF5 is sensitive to eight clinically important antibiotics and does not possess cytolysin activator -cylA, gelatinase -gelE and hyaluronidase -hylA virulence genes. The antilisterial activity of Ent-MF5 was abolished by trypsin, α-chymotrypsin, protease and proteinase-K. Ent-MF5 showed thermal and pH stability. In addition, the activity of Ent-MF5 was unaffected in the presence of various surfactants (1% SDS, Triton X-100, Tween 20, and Tween 80). Ent-MF5 exhibited antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria innocua, Listeria ivanovii and Listeria seeligeri at concentrations as low as 0.13 μg/ml. Ent-MF5 had a bactericidal effect against L. monocytogenes with a significant reduction in surviving cells at concentrations equal to or greater than 0.13 μg/ml. A 75–100% reduction in L. monocytogenes growth and bactericidal effect determined by CFU counts was observed following treatment with Ent-MF5 at 4.47 μg/ml at time points starting at 2 and 4 h, respectively. Ent-MF5 action is associated with Listeria cell membrane damage, as observed by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. Thus, the effective antilisterial activity and stability of Ent-MF5 presents promising perspectives for application as biopreservatives in the food industry.

River terraces serve as excellent indicators of the landform evolution of the Guizhou Plateau. This paper presents the results of terrace investigation and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating focused on five sections along the Liujiang River of the southeastern Guizhou Plateau. The OSL ages of the terraces range from 0.21 ± 0.02 to 16.0 ± 1.4 ka for the first terraces (T1) and from 3.5 ± 0.3 to 26.5 ± 3.3 ka for the second terraces (T2), which are much younger than those of other basins on the Guizhou Plateau. These ages, considered in tandem with the results of previous investigations, enhance our understanding of the fluvial landform evolution of the Guizhou Plateau since the Late Pleistocene. On the Guizhou Plateau platform, terraces are considered to be the response of river evolution to tectonic uplift, indicating a relatively slow geomorphic process. In the slope zone, climate change has had a significant impact on the fluvial landform processes, driving the formation of the younger terraces along the Liujiang River. In the platform–slope transition zone, the evolution of terraces was driven by both tectonic uplift and climate change, where the landform processes were dominated by strong headward erosion.

Ever since the first discovery of urn burials in eastern Serbia during the 1980s, their dating has been uncertain and based on distant analogies and typological parallels. In this paper, we present radiocarbon dates from five urn cemeteries and three associated settlement sites, showing that the initial dating (Late Bronze Age; 14th–11th BCE) is highly questionable. Instead, radiocarbon dating and modeling presented here connect the urn cemeteries—characterized by a specific grave architecture and associated with settlements that display evidence of copper production—to a period between the 20th and 16th centuries BC. The fact that many of our dates come from cremated bones requires a discussion with regard to the circumstances of carbon exchange during cremation. The absolute dates thus far available for most urn cemeteries from the neighboring regions of the Balkans are all markedly younger (15th–11th century BC) than the data presented here and fall in the frame of the overall expansion of cremation in Europe during the Urnfield period. The new absolute dates from eastern Serbia provide a possibility to change our understanding of the Bronze Age dynamics of the 2nd millennium in the broader area of southeastern Europe and indicate a much earlier acceptance of cremation among certain groups than previously thought.

This article examines the process of nation-building in post-colonial Qatar. By using a postcolonial lens, the study discusses the historical context of Qatar’s state formation, tracing the impact of colonialism and the role of external powers in shaping political structures and narratives. Through an analysis of key historical figures and events, such as Shaykh Jassim and the Qatari constitution, this article explores the use of tradition and indigenous modernity in the construction of Qatar’s national identity. By drawing on theoretical frameworks such as “invented traditions,” “imagined communities,” and the politics of tradition and modernity, the article provides a roadmap to understanding the main tenets of the national identity politics of Qatar today and key factors of its national identity narratives, including ethno-political migrations, citizenship dynamics, and institutional frameworks established by the state constitution. It argues that while nation-building processes may share commonalities across different geographies, the specific historical, cultural, and political dynamics of Qatar shaped its unique trajectory. Ultimately, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities of nation-building in post-colonial contexts and the construction of national identity in the Gulf region

Amongst the various strategies studied to reduce polluting agents in water, both from anthropogenic and natural sources, adsorption processes are among the most widespread techniques. Layered double hydroxides (LDH, anionic adsorbers) play a fundamental role in the treatment of industrial wastewater, which often contains both anionic and cationic species. The objectives of the present study were to synthesize a (Mg, Zn)Al-NO3 LDH, and a composite between the LDH and montmorillonite (Mnt, cationic exchanger), and to test their adsorption capacity for both cationic and anionic pollutants in two different samples of industrial wastewater. The compounds were characterized by means of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry (DTA-TG), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results of product yields and extraction performance provided evidence that the synthesized compounds were active in the removal of various kinds of pollutants from real wastewaters. The adsorption capacity, in the case of the removal of cations varied from ~85 to 100% and from ~92 to 100% when the LDH and the LDH-Mnt, respectively, were used. The 56–100% removal of anions was instead obtained for both the adsorbents.

Epistemic paternalism involves interfering with the inquiry of others, without their consent, for their own epistemic good. Recently, such paternalism has been discussed as a method of getting the public to have more accurate views on important policy matters. Here, I discuss a novel problem for such paternalism—epistemic spillovers. The problem arises because what matters for rational belief is one’s total evidence, and further, individual pieces of evidence can have complex interactions. Because of this, justified epistemic paternalism requires the would-be paternalist to be in an unusually strong epistemic position, one that most would-be paternalists are unlikely to meet.

When did fascism end? Did it end in July 1943, with the fall of Mussolini from power, or in April 1945, with Liberation Day? The argument of this article is that fascism was not simply a historical experience but a political form that attempted to transcend Italy’s social and political fractures with fantasies and unrealistic but nevertheless captivating expectations. Its hypnotic contagious power cast a mimetic spell that can be continuously reloaded: by blurring the boundaries between truth and lies; by exploiting crowd irrationality; by establishing boundaries between outsiders and insiders; by perpetuating negative sentiments of hostility, fear and envy within society; and by manipulating time. The argument, therefore, is that fascism has never ended, not merely in the sense of political and cultural continuity, but in the deeper sense of immanency within the body politic of Italy’s democracy. As such, it is meaningless to wonder whether fascism might come back. It is here and now, in the only form that current historical circumstances allow it to exist – and yet it might be countered by a process of rejection that individuals and political communities can and should exercise in their everyday life, adopting the political form generated by the Resistance.
