Electron acceleration by a circularly polarized Hermite–Gaussian (HG) laser beam in the plasma has been investigated theoretically for the different transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode indices (m, n) as (0, 1), (0, 2), (0, 3), and (0, 4). HG laser beam possesses higher trapping force compared with a standard Gaussian beam owing to its propagation characteristics during laser–electron interaction. A single-particle simulation indicates a resonant enhancement in the electron acceleration with HG laser beam. We present the intensity distribution for different TEM modes. We also analyze the dependence of beam width parameter on electron acceleration distance, which effectively influences the electron dynamics. Electron acceleration up to longer distance is observed with the lower modes. However, the higher electron energy gain is observed with higher modes at shorter distance of propagation.

The superconducting synchrotron SIS100 of the FAIR accelerator project will provide heavy ion beams of highest intensities. SIS100 is the first synchrotron with a special design, optimized for the control of ionization beam loss. Ionization beam loss is the most pronounced loss mechanism at operation with high-intensity, intermediate charge state heavy ions. The new synchrotron layout comprises an ion catcher system, which in combination with a charge separator lattice shall suppress dynamic vacuum effects.

A prototype cryogenic ion catcher, including a dedicated cryostat has been designed, manufactured, and tested under realistic conditions with beams from the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS18 at GSI. The gas desorption induced by the impact of heavy ions on this cryocatcher has been measured. For the very first time, a rise of desorption yield with increasing beam energy has been observed. However, measurements at room temperature have confirmed the known decrease of the pressure rise in the investigated energy regime. A transition temperature of 18 K, underneath hydrogen is adsorbed, could be verified several times. The results are significant and used to predict the ionization beam loss at operation of SIS100 at full-beam intensity.

The overview of the recent results for discovery and investigations of a very exotic phenomenon – optical mirage in the X-ray spectral range – is presented. It was found that the mirage could be created in the form of coherent virtual point source, emerging in the vicinity of the second plasma in two-stage oscillator-amplifier X-ray laser. The X-ray source-mirage, rigidly phased with the initial radiation of generator, occurs only when amplification takes place in the amplifier plasma and leads to the appearance of the interference pattern in the form of concentric rings in the spatial profile of the output X-ray laser beam. The equation describing the emergence of X-ray mirage was found, numerical solution of which shows that its formation is similar to that of the optical mirages observed at propagation of light rays through an inhomogeneously heated air. Obtained results have already demonstrated novel comprehension into the physical nature of amplification of X-ray radiation, opening additional opportunities for X-ray interferometry, holography, and other applications, which require multiple rigidly phased sources of coherent radiation.

Laser-produced high-energy-density plasmas may contain strong magnetic fields that affect the energy transport, which can be nonlocal. Models which describe the magnetized nonlocal transport are formally complicated and based on many approximations. This paper presents a more straightforward approach to the description of the electron transport in this regime, based on the extension of a reduced entropic model. The calculated magnetized heat fluxes are compared with the known asymptotic limits and applied for studying of a magnetized nonlocal plasma thermalization.

In the present paper, we have investigated self-focusing of Gaussian laser beam in relativistic ponderomotive (RP) cold quantum plasma. When de Broglie wavelength of charged particles is greater than or equal to the inter particle distance or equivalently the temperature is less than or equal to the Fermi temperature, quantum nature of the plasma constituents cannot be ignored. In this context, we have reported self-focusing on account of nonlinear dielectric contribution of RP plasma by taking into consideration the impact of quantum effects. We have setup the nonlinear differential equation for the beam-width parameter by paraxial ray and Wentzel Kramers Brillouin approximation and solved it numerically by the Runge Kutta Fourth order method. Our results show that additional self-focusing is achieved in case of RP cold quantum plasma than relativistic cold quantum plasma and classical relativistic case. The pinching effect offered by quantum plasma and the combined effect of relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearity greatly enhances laser propagation up to 20 Rayleigh lengths.

Laser-driven relativistic electrons can be focused onto a high-Z convertor for generating high-brightness γ-rays, which in turn can be used to induce photonuclear reactions. In this work, photo-transmutation of long-lived radionuclide 135Cs induced by laser–plasma–interaction-driven electron source is demonstrated using Geant4 simulation (Agostinelli et al., 2003 Nucl. Instrum. Meth. A506, 250). High-energy electron generation, bremsstrahlung, as well as photonuclear reaction are observed at four different laser intensities: 1020, 5 × 1020, 1021, and 5 × 1021 W/cm2. The transmutation efficiency depends on the laser intensity and target size. An optimum laser intensity, namely 1021 W/cm2, was found, with the corresponding photonuclear reaction yield reaching 108 J−1 of the laser energy. Laser-generated electrons can therefore be a promising tool for transmutation reactions. Potential application in nuclear waste management is suggested.

In the interaction of ultra-short and ultra-intense high contrast laser pulse with a dense foil, accelerating electron sheath is formed. The dynamic of this sheath is obtained according to the ponderomotive force of the laser pulse and restoring electrostatic force of the stationary heavy ions. In the transient dynamics, maximum electron sheath displacement is obtained for different interaction parameters. This maximum displacement has an important effect in the explanation of the electron blow out condition. It is shown numerically that the electron sheath maximum displacement increases with increasing laser pulse amplitude or decreasing its rise time, or by decreasing plasma electron density. Recently, backward MeV acceleration of electrons in the interaction of intense laser pulse with solid targets was observed. The ponderomotive force of the compressed reflected laser pulse includes in our formalism and is used for explanation of the electron's backward acceleration. The threshold values of the interaction parameters for the occurrence of this phenomenon are considered. The electron blow out condition and backward acceleration are accompanied with numerical modeling and 1D3V, particle-in-cell simulation code.

We analyze the undulator radiation from planar bi-harmonic undulators with account for all principle losses in real devices. The exact analytical expressions for the UR spectrum, intensity, and the line shape are obtained in terms of special functions. The interplay of various broadening contribution is elucidated and their role is explored. Suspension and boost of certain harmonics by fine tuning the undulator parameters is demonstrated. The constant non-periodic magnetic constituents are studied to compensate the divergency of the electronic beam. The examples of harmonic generation in various undulator schemes with single and double period magnetic field are explored. Influence of inhomogeneous and homogeneous broadening on these harmonics is demonstrated. The analysis is applied to evaluate the harmonics in self-amplified spontaneous emission free electron laser.

In the present work, classical electron–ion scattering, Coulomb logarithm, and stopping power are studied taking into account the quantum mechanical diffraction effect and the dynamic screening effect separately and together. The inclusion of the quantum diffraction effect is realized at the same level as the well-known first-order gradient correction in the extended Thomas–Fermi theory. In order to take the effect of dynamic screening into account, the model suggested by Grabowski et al. in 2013 is used. Scattering as well as stopping power of the external electron (ion) beam by plasma ions (electrons) and scattering of the plasma's own electrons (ions) by plasma ions (electrons) are considered differently. In the first case, it is found that in the limit of the non-ideal plasma with a plasma parameter Γ → 1, the effects of quantum diffraction and dynamic screening partially compensate each other. In the second case, the dynamic screening enlarges scattering cross-section, Coulomb logarithm, and stopping power, whereas the quantum diffraction reduces their values. Comparisons with the results of other theoretical methods and computer simulations indicate that the model used in this work gives a good description of the stopping power for projectile velocities $v\,{\rm \lesssim}\, 1.5 v_{{\rm th}}$, where vth is the thermal velocity of the plasma electrons.

An obliquely incident high-power laser (ω0, k0z) on the metallic surface can resonantly excite a surface plasma wave (SPW) (ω1, k1z) and a quasi-electrostatic plasma wave (ω, kz) inside the skin layer at the phase-matching conditions of frequency ω1 = ω − ω0 and wave number k1z = kz − k0z. The oscillating electrons in the skin layer couples with the seed SPW and exert non-linear ponderomotive force on electrons at the frequency of quasi-static mode. Density perturbations due to quasi-static mode and ponderomotive force associate with the motion of electrons (due to incident laser) and give rise to a non-linear current by feedback mechanism. At ω/kz ~ vF (where vF is the Fermi velocity of metal) this non-linear current is responsible for the growth of SPW. The maximum growth of the present process (≅1.5 × 1012 s−1) is achieved at incident angle θ = 42° for laser frequency ω0 = 2 × 1015 rad/s. Growth of SPW enhances from 1.62 × 1011 to ≅1.5 × 1012 s−1 as the magnetic field changes from 12 to 24 MG. The excited SPW can be utilized for surface heating and diagnostics purpose.

The acceleration of an electron beam by surface plasma waves (SPW), in the presence of external magnetic field parallel to surface and perpendicular to direction of propagation of SPW has been studied. This wave propagating along the $\hat z$-axis is excited using Kretschmann geometry, having maximum amplitude at the metal–vacuum interface. Equations of motion have been solved for electron energy and trajectory. The electron gains and retains energy in the form of cyclotron oscillations due to the combined effect of the static magnetic field and SPW field. The energy gained by the beam increases with the strength of magnetic field and laser intensity. In the present scheme, electron beams can achieve ~15 KeV energy for the SPW amplitude A1 = 1.6 × 1011 V/m, plasma frequency ωp = 1.3 × 1016 rad/s and cyclotron frequency ωc/ωp = 0.003.

In this paper, conceptual points regarding electron elastic (Kapitza–Dirac effect) and inelastic diffraction effects on the slowed electromagnetic wave-structures/light-gratings are considered. From the unified point of view it is analyzed the main works on this subject for last four decades in chronological order, pointing out the essential peculiarity inherent in induced Cherenkov, Compton, and undulator/wiggler processes too. This review paper has also purpose to resolve confusion in scientific literature connected with the recently appeared paper Hayrapetyan et al. in 2015 regarding electron diffraction effect on a traveling wave in a dielectric medium.

The influence of plasma shielding effect induced by ambient gas pressure and laser intensity on the laser-produced Cu plasma parameters, signal-to-background ratio (S/B) and expansion are experimentally and numerically investigated. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm at various intensities ranging from 2 to 7.1 GW/cm2 intensity (40–150 mJ) is used to produce Cu plasma in air, argon (Ar), helium (He), and neon (Ne) ambient gas at various pressures ranging from 5 to 1000 mbar. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy reveals that spectral radiation, S/B, electron temperature, number density, and front edge velocity of the plasma have an increasing trend up to a certain value of laser intensity and gas pressure. Afterwards, a saturation trend is achieved, which is attributed to the shielding and self-regulation effect. The numerical modeling of the laser-produced Cu plasma in the presence of air at atmospheric pressure is carried out using the MULTI radiation hydrodynamics code. We have shown that the feature of plasma shielding effect observed in the experiments can be reproduced using a continuum hydrodynamics model. Laser intensity at about 3.5 GW/cm2 is found to produce the highest S/B at 1000 mbar air. He, Ne, air, and Ar show the best S/B, respectively and the best S/B is found for air, Ar, He, and Ne at 10, 5, 10, and 20 mbar, respectively. The expansion of plasma plume is studied using a simple and effective technique based on probe laser absorption and scattering method. The plasma plume expansion through He, Ne, air, and Ar at 1000 mbar pressure has the highest velocity, respectively. The simulated results of strong shock wave model and Rankine–Hugoniot jump condition are fitted to the experimental data, which are then used to estimate the values of the ablation parameters.

The effects of target density and laser intensity on ionization speed are studied in this paper by 1D3V particle-in-cell simulations, where the field ionization of single atom is involved basing Ammosov-Delone-Krainov model in the form of Penetrante and Bardsley. To consider the ionization speed, the evolution of plasma density for the helium target, particularly, the ion density change rate near the target front surface, are discussed. The results show that not only the laser intensity, but also the target density will affect field ionization and further affect the plasma formation. This work will be helpful for further understanding of plasma formation in intense laser pulse. Also, it may be benefit for the setup of initial parameters before the simulation of laser–plasma interaction.

We report that the tail modulation of Stokes pulses in the high-energy stimulated Brillouin scattering pulse compression can be suppressed by controlling effective pulse width of the pump. It is shown through numerical simulations and validated experimentally that the effective pulse width is an appropriate parameter, which determines the generation of tail modulation. The effective pulse width broaden as the increase of energy. This mechanism leads to the amplification of Stokes tail edge and it is the cause of tail modulation.

We analyze the transverse stability for a configuration of multiple Gaussian bunches subject to the self-generated plasma wakefield. Through a semi-analytical approach we first study the equilibrium configuration for the modulated beam and then we investigate the evolution of the equilibrium configuration due to the emittance-driven expansion of the beam front that results in a rigid backward shift. The rear-directed shift brings the modulated beam out of the equilibrium, with the possibility for some of the bunch particles to be lost with a consequent deterioration of the driver. We look therefore for the proper position of the single bunches that maximize the stability without severely affecting the accelerating field behind the driver. We then compare the results with three-dimensional particle in cell simulations.

Terahertz (THz) radiation generation by nonlinear mixing of two laser beams, obliquely incident on an overdense plasma is investigated. In an overdense plasma, the laser beams penetrate to only thin layer of a plasma surface and reflected. At this thin layer, the laser beams exert a ponderomotive force on the electrons of plasma and impart them oscillatory velocity at the different frequency of lasers. THz waves appear in the reflected component from the plasma surface. The amplitude of THz waves can be augmented by applying the magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of propagation of lasers. It is found that the field strength of the emitted THz radiations is sensitive to the angle of incident of the laser beams, beat frequency, and magnetic field strength. In this scheme, the magnetic field strength plays an important role for strong THz wave generation.

The emission of X-rays from solid tin targets irradiated by low-energy (few mJ) femtosecond laser pulses propagated through air plasma sparks is investigated. The aim is that to better understand the X-ray emission mechanism and to show the possibility to produce proper radiation for spectroscopic and imaging applications with a table-top laser system. The utilization of a controlled ultrashort prepulse is found necessary to optimize the conversion efficiency of laser energy into Lα radiation. The optimum contrast between the main pulse and the controlled prepulse is found about 102. A correlation between the laser contrast value and the laser near-infrared spectra at the exit of the plasma spark is observed.

Hot-spot path in the thermodynamic space $({\rm \rho} R,T_{\rm i} )_{{\rm hs}} $ is investigated for direct-drive scaled-target family covering a huge interval of kinetic energy on both sides of kinetic threshold for ignition. Different peak implosion velocities and two initial aspect ratios have been considered. It is shown that hot spot follows almost the same path during deceleration up to stagnation whatever the target is. As attended, after stagnation, a clear distinction is done between non-, marginally-, or fully igniting targets. For the last, ionic temperature can reach very high values when the thermonuclear energy becomes very high.

The effect of transverse magnetic fields on surface high-harmonic generation in intense laser–solid interactions is investigated. It is shown that the longitudinal motion of electrons can be coupled with the transverse motion via the magnetic fields, which lead to even-order harmonics under normal laser incidence. The dependence of the coupling efficiency and hence even harmonic generation with preplasma scale length and magnetic field strength are presented based upon particle-in-cell simulations. When the magnetic field is parallel to the laser electric field, the spectral intensity of the second harmonic is proportional to the magnetic field strength in a wide range up to 160 MG, while the situation with the magnetic field perpendicular to the laser electric field is more complicated. The second harmonic generation due to the magnetic field also tends to increase with the plasma density scale lengths, which is different from the high-harmonic generation by the oscillating mirror mechanism. With the increase of the laser spot size from a laser wavelength λL, both the magnetic field-induced harmonics and oscillating mirror high harmonics tend to increase first and then become saturated after 3λL. The magnetic field-induced second harmonic may be used to evaluate large self-generated magnetic fields developed near the critical density region and the preplasma conditions.
