We prove that the Kodaira dimension of the n-fold universal family of lattice-polarised holomorphic symplectic varieties with dominant and generically finite period map stabilises to the moduli number when n is sufficiently large. Then we study the transition of Kodaira dimension explicitly, from negative to nonnegative, for known explicit families of polarised symplectic varieties. In particular, we determine the exact transition point in the Beauville–Donagi and Debarre–Voisin cases, where the Borcherds $\Phi _{12}$ form plays a crucial role.

We show that there exists an invertible frequently hypercyclic operator on $\ell ^1(\mathbb {N})$ whose inverse is not frequently hypercyclic.

We prove a product formula for the determinant of the cohomology of an étale sheaf with $\ell $ -adic coefficients over an arbitrary proper scheme over a perfect field of positive characteristic p distinct from $\ell $ . The local contributions are constructed by iterating vanishing cycle functors as well as certain exact additive functors that can be considered as linearised versions of Artin conductors and local $\varepsilon $ -factors. We provide several applications of our higher dimensional product formula, such as twist formulas for global $\varepsilon $ -factors.

This paper presents an approach, based on interpolation theory of operators, to the study of interpolating sequences for interpolation Banach spaces between Hardy spaces. It is shown that the famous Carleson result for H∞ can be lifted to a large class of abstract Hardy spaces. A description is provided of the range of the Carleson operator defined on interpolation spaces between the classical Hardy spaces in terms of uniformly separated sequences. A key role in this description is played by some general interpolation results proved in the paper. As by-products, novel results are obtained which extend the Shapiro–Shields result on the characterisation of interpolation sequences for the classical Hardy spaces Hp. Applications to Hardy–Lorentz, Hardy–Marcinkiewicz and Hardy–Orlicz spaces are presented.

Let G be a reductive p-adic group which splits over an unramified extension of the ground field. Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda [24] conjectured that the formal degree of a square-integrable G-representation $\pi $ can be expressed in terms of the adjoint $\gamma $ -factor of the enhanced L-parameter of $\pi $ . A similar conjecture was posed for the Plancherel densities of tempered irreducible G-representations.

We prove these conjectures for unipotent G-representations. We also derive explicit formulas for the involved adjoint $\gamma $ -factors.

We prove that if F is a nonzero (possibly noncuspidal) vector-valued Siegel modular form of any degree, then it has infinitely many nonzero Fourier coefficients which are indexed by half-integral matrices having odd, square-free (and thus fundamental) discriminant. The proof uses an induction argument in the setting of vector-valued modular forms. Further, as an application of a variant of our result and complementing the work of A. Pollack, we show how to obtain an unconditional proof of the functional equation of the spinor L-function of a holomorphic cuspidal Siegel eigenform of degree $3$ and level $1$ .

We prove that the special-value conjecture for the zeta function of a proper, regular, flat arithmetic surface formulated in [6] at $s=1$ is equivalent to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the Jacobian of the generic fibre. There are two key results in the proof. The first is the triviality of the correction factor of [6, Conjecture 5.12], which we show for arbitrary regular proper arithmetic schemes. In the proof we need to develop some results for the eh-topology on schemes over finite fields which might be of independent interest. The second result is a different proof of a formula due to Geisser, relating the cardinalities of the Brauer and the Tate–Shafarevich group, which applies to arbitrary rather than only totally imaginary base fields.

Let $\mathrm {Lip}_0(M)$ be the space of Lipschitz functions on a complete metric space M that vanish at a base point. We prove that every normal functional in ${\mathrm {Lip}_0(M)}^*$ is weak* continuous; that is, in order to verify weak* continuity it suffices to do so for bounded monotone nets of Lipschitz functions. This solves a problem posed by N. Weaver. As an auxiliary result, we show that the series decomposition developed by N. J. Kalton for functionals in the predual of $\mathrm {Lip}_0(M)$ can be partially extended to ${\mathrm {Lip}_0(M)}^*$ .

We establish a one-to-one correspondence between, on the one hand, Finsler structures on the $2$ -sphere with constant curvature $1$ and all geodesics closed, and on the other hand, Weyl connections on certain spindle orbifolds whose symmetric Ricci curvature is positive definite and whose geodesics are all closed. As an application of our duality result, we show that suitable holomorphic deformations of the Veronese embedding $\mathbb {CP}(a_1,a_2)\rightarrow \mathbb {CP}(a_1,(a_1+a_2)/2,a_2)$ of weighted projective spaces provide examples of Finsler $2$ -spheres of constant curvature whose geodesics are all closed.

One of the main aims of this paper is to give a large class of strongly solid compact quantum groups. We do this by using quantum Markov semigroups and noncommutative Riesz transforms. We introduce a property for quantum Markov semigroups of central multipliers on a compact quantum group which we shall call ‘approximate linearity with almost commuting intertwiners’. We show that this property is stable under free products, monoidal equivalence, free wreath products and dual quantum subgroups. Examples include in particular all the (higher-dimensional) free orthogonal easy quantum groups.

We then show that a compact quantum group with a quantum Markov semigroup that is approximately linear with almost commuting intertwiners satisfies the immediately gradient- ${\mathcal {S}}_2$ condition from [10] and derive strong solidity results (following [10]). Using the noncommutative Riesz transform we also show that these quantum groups have the Akemann–Ostrand property; in particular, the same strong solidity results follow again (now following [27]).

We address the question of determining which mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces admit nonelementary continuous actions on hyperbolic spaces.

More precisely, let $\Sigma $ be a connected, orientable surface of infinite type with tame endspace whose mapping class group is generated by a coarsely bounded subset. We prove that ${\mathrm {Map}}(\Sigma )$ admits a continuous nonelementary action on a hyperbolic space if and only if $\Sigma $ contains a finite-type subsurface which intersects all its homeomorphic translates.

When $\Sigma $ contains such a nondisplaceable subsurface K of finite type, the hyperbolic space we build is constructed from the curve graphs of K and its homeomorphic translates via a construction of Bestvina, Bromberg and Fujiwara. Our construction has several applications: first, the second bounded cohomology of ${\mathrm {Map}}(\Sigma )$ contains an embedded $\ell ^1$ ; second, using work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin, we deduce that ${\mathrm {Map}} (\Sigma )$ contains nontrivial normal free subgroups (while it does not if $\Sigma $ has no nondisplaceable subsurface of finite type), has uncountably many quotients and is SQ-universal.

In this note we show that the expected value of the separating systole of a random surface of genus g with respect to Weil–Petersson volume behaves like $2\log g $ as the genus goes to infinity. This is in strong contrast to the behavior of the expected value of the systole which, by results of Mirzakhani and Petri, is independent of genus.

We study the behaviour of representation varieties of quivers with relations under the operation of node splitting. We show how splitting a node gives a correspondence between certain closed subvarieties of representation varieties for different algebras, which preserves properties like normality or having rational singularities. Furthermore, we describe how the defining equations of such closed subvarieties change under the correspondence.

By working in the ‘relative setting’ (splitting one node at a time), we demonstrate that there are many nonhereditary algebras whose irreducible components of representation varieties are all normal with rational singularities. We also obtain explicit generators of the prime defining ideals of these irreducible components. This class contains all radical square zero algebras, but also many others, as illustrated by examples throughout the paper. We also show that this is true when irreducible components are replaced by orbit closures, for a more restrictive class of algebras. Lastly, we provide applications to decompositions of moduli spaces of semistable representations of certain algebras.
