Engineers have traditionally invested in Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT), such as FMS, Robots, CAD/CAM, CNC and MRP to achieve a reduction in the labour force. Similarly, government incentives for introducing AMT, have also placed an undue emphasis on the ‘need to replace labour with technology’. This policy creates severe industrial relations problems and leads to the view that technology, especially robots, ‘competes’ with human beings for employment. Research at U.M.I.S.T. has shown that AMT is much more viable when the objective of the investment is to increase a company's overall competitive ability, thereby generating increased sales which, in turn, necessitates an INCREASED labour force. The paper discusses various aspects of AMT and in each case it is shown how the acceptability of the investment is improved when the new technology is viewed ‘company-wide’. When this occurs, technology is viewed as being ‘complementary to’ and not ‘instead of’ humans.

This paper is focused on task scheduling in multiprocessor robot controllers. To minimize the input-output time delay our consideration is restricted to parallel architectures that include complete crossbar interconnection networks. In this paper, an efficient scheduling algorithm based on a heuristic function is considered. This function takes into account delays caused by interprocessor communication and minimizes both the execution time and the communication cost. Robot control computation based on a highly efficient customized symbolic method is decomposed into a large number of simple tasks, each involving a single floating-point operation. Starting with an empty partial schedule, each step of the search extends the current partial schedule by adding one of the tasks yet to be scheduled. The heuristic function used in the algorithm actively directs the search for a feasible schedule, i.e. it helps choose the task that extends the current partial schedule. To increase the computational rate we introduced overlapping of computations.

A laser range finder mounted on a site and azimuth turret is used as a 3D range camera. It forms, associated with a video camera, an original stereovision system. The internal structure of both images are the same but the resolution of 3D image stays low. By ignoring the acquiring speed of measures, spatial resolution is limited by the accuracy of deviation device and the laser footprint. The fact that the impact of the beam is not a point introduces spatial integration.

To correct the average at depth discontinuities due to the beam footprint, a neural-network-based solution is reported.

The use of such a multisensor system requires its calibration. As camera calibration is a well-known problem, the paper focuses on models and calibration methods of the range finder. Experimental results illustrate the quality of the calibration step in terms of accuracy and stability.

The footprint correction is evaluated for both 1D and 2D range finder scannings.

Due to the efficient and flexible flight ability of bats, bat-like robots have become the focus of research in the field of bionic robots. Aerodynamic calculation is an important part of the research field of bat-like robot, which is the basis of the structure design and flight controller design of bat-like robot. However, due to the complex flight mechanism of bats, there is no mature theoretical method to calculate the flight aerodynamic force of bat-like robots. To solve this problem, this paper takes the membrane of a bat-like robot as the research object and analyzes in detail the effects of wing folding and unfolding and flexible deformation of the membrane on the chord length, passive torsion angle and relative velocity. Based on quasi-steady state model and blade element method, a set of aerodynamic calculation method for flexible deformed wing is established. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the theoretical calculation results and the results of the fluid-structure interaction simulation are compared and analyzed under various working conditions. The two results are in good agreement under each working condition, and the errors are all within reasonable range, which proves the effectiveness of the method. This study can provide a theoretical basis for rational structure design and precise flight control of bat-like robot.

The fundamental cause for the statically indeterminate problem in the force analysis of overconstrained parallel mechanisms (PMs) is found to be the presence of the linearly dependent overconstrained wrenches. Based on the fundamental cause, a unified expression of the solution for the magnitudes of the constraint wrenches of both the limb stiffness decoupled and limb stiffness coupled overconstrained PMs is derived. When the weight of each link is considered, depending on whether additional component forces are generated along the axes of the overconstrained wrenches, two different situations should be considered. One situation is that no additional component force is generated along the axes of the overconstrained wrenches under the weight of the links in the corresponding limb. In this case, the added constraint wrenches at the limb’s end can be calculated directly, and used as a part of the generalized external wrench. The other situation is that additional component forces are generated. In this case, the elastic deformations in the axes of the overconstrained wrenches generated by those component forces should be considered, and the deformation compatibility equations between the overconstrained wrenches are reformulated.

The objective of this work is to construct a robot that is based on 3D printing to meet the low-cost and light structures. The Computer-aided-design model is used with LabVIEW to simulate the given trajectory. Users of the simulation of such methodology can preview the simulated motion and perceive and resolve discrepancies between the planned and simulated paths prior to execution of a task. The advantages of this study are the lack of need to mount extra sensors on realistic robot to measure joint space coordinates, simplifying the hardware. These outcomes can also be used in an undergraduate robotics course.

With the progress of industry, people are facing more and more complicated tasks, which cannot be completed by conventional rigid robot. For this, a deployable robot based on spherical linkage parallel mechanism was proposed to satisfy relevant requirements for the degrees of freedom in this study. Based on the design of robot model and its control box, a mathematical model for the robot was established, and the relationship between motion space and drive space was deduced accordingly. Subsequently, a control system consisting of the upper and lower computers was introduced. Two control modes, that is, Joystick control and remote control, were developed. The upper computer control interface for the robot was completed by MATLAB construction. At last, the two control modes as well as autonomous detection were demonstrated by motion test. This achievement will further advance the applications of deployable robot in job aid and intelligent exploration.

Nonlinear couplings between the various joints of a robotic arm cause trouble in robot control. One possibility to overcome these difficulties is offered by the concept of nonlinear decoupling. The latter leads to independent linear SISO systems, each of them describing the movement of one joint. Thus, an application of control concepts for linear SISO systems is possible. However, at present such decoupling controls are computed from the mathematical model of the arm, the so-called drive equations, whereas actuator dynamics are considered only in a secondary way. In this paper the decoupling problem for robots is investigated by accounting also for the actuator dynamics from the very beginning. This results in decoupling laws requiring a complete state feedback, i.e. not only joint positions and velocities but also the states of the various actuators have to be used. Further, formulas are given which make the computation of those states unsuitable for direct measurements.

The purpose of this paper is to show how one can use entropies of deterministic functions (as previously defined by the author) in order to analyze some questions related to machine vision. The main advantage of this approach is that it provides information theoretic methods for solving problems which basically do not refer to probability distributions. After a short qualitative background on deterministic functions, one applies this theory to edge finding, image segmentation, transfer of information defined by brightness functions, and image processing. Some more theoretical details on the entropies of deterministic functions are given in the appendix.

Navigating along a set of programmed points in a completely unknown environment is a challenging task which mostly depends on the way the robot perceives and symbolizes the environment and decisions it takes in order to avoid the obstacles while it intends to reach subsequent goals. Tenacity and Traversability (T2)1-based strategies have demonstrated to be highly effective for reactive navigation, extending the benefits of the artificial Potential Field method to complex situations, such as trapping zones or mazes. This paper presents a new approach for reactive mobile robot behavior control which rules the actions to be performed to avoid unexpected obstacles while the robot executes a mission between several defined sites. This new strategy combines the T2 principles to escape from trapping zones together with additional criteria based on the Nearness Diagram (ND)13 strategy to move in cluttered or densely occupied scenarios. Success in a complete set of experiments, using a mobile robot equipped with a single camera, shows extensive environmental conditions where the strategy can be applied.

The four papers encompassing this special section on Robot Mediated Neuro-motor Therapy introduce a new area for robotics in the healthcare industry, that of assisting in the delivery of neuro-motor therapies, for patients recovering from a stroke. As life expectancy increases, so do problems associated with old age. In the paper by Krebs et al. the authors not only summarise the need for action in stroke rehabilitation but also makes a useful distinction between assistive technologies that provide enhanced abilities for the patient, and therapy tools for the clinician, that seek to enhance the patients recovery.

This paper proposed a new approach for the joint friction estimation of non-slipping walking biped robots. The proposed approach is based on the combination of a measurement-based strategy and a model-based method. The former is used to estimate the joint friction online when the foot is in contact with the ground, while the latter adopts a friction model to represent the joint friction when the leg is swinging. The measurement-based strategy utilizes the measured ground reaction forces (GRF) and the readings of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) located at the robot body. Based on these measurements, the joint angular accelerations and the body attitude and velocity are estimated. The aforementioned measurements and estimates are used in a reduced dynamical model of the biped. However, when the leg is swinging, this strategy is inapplicable. Therefore, a friction model is adopted. Its parameters are identified adaptively using the estimated online friction whenever the foot is in contact. The estimated joint friction is used in the feedback torque control signal. The proposed approach is validated using the full-dynamics of 12-DOF biped model. By using this approach, the robot center of mass (CoM) position error is reduced by 10% which demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach.

This paper describes the development of a desktop robotic system that enables the plug-and-play function through the USB (universal serial bus) port of a personal computer (PC). Thus a new kind of desktop PC peripheral is invented that has programmable manipulability. The robotic system is realized on an internally distributed control structure that facilitates higher system reliability. A PID control algorithm is implemented on a prototype of the proposed system, to demonstrate the system's ability to implement feedback control. Experimental results show the performance and properties of the proposed system.

A new approach to flow measurement and visualisation in fluid dynamics based on a group of perceptive communicating capsules has been developed. Experiments were carried out with fluid-mobilised and stationary capsules deployed in a fluid flow test rig (raceway pond). Each capsule contains a microcontroller, battery, infra-red and visible LEDs and other electronics. Using optical communications, capsules can record encounters with one another. From the resulting interaction patterns, fluid flow speed and path-frequency measurements were obtained. Additionally, the capsules have shown the capacity for distributed sensing, and their streaklines provide a valuable means of external visualisation.

For design using digital human models, human anthropometry data are required as input and are extracted from measurements. There is inherent error associated with these measurements which impacts the output of the simulation. Current techniques in digital human modeling applications primarily employ deterministic methods which are not well suited for handling variability in anthropometric measurement. An alternative to deterministic methods is probabilistic/sensitivity analysis. This study presents a probabilistic sensitivity approach to gain insights into how uncertainty in anthropometric measurements can affect the results of a digital human model with the specific application of vehicle-related reach tasks. Sensitivity levels are found to determine the importance of variability in each joint angle and link length to the final reach. A55-degree of freedom (DOF) digital human model is introduced to demonstrate the sensitivity approach for reach tasks. Seven right-hand reach target points and two left-hand reach target points (creating a total of 14 reach tasks) within a vehicle are used to compare the sensitivities in the joint angles and link lengths resulting from measurement uncertainty. The results show that the importance of each joint angle or link length is dependent on the characteristics of the reach task and sensitivities for joint angles, and link lengths are different for each reach task.
