Un accident sur un réacteur nucléaire avec dépôt de radionucléides sur des surfaces urbaines pourrait présenter un danger d'irradiation externe pour les populations. Afin d'appréhender cerisque, et compte tenu du peu de données disponibles dans la littérature, il nous est apparu opportun de tester en laboratoire l'efficacité de techniques dedécontamination sur des surfaces urbaines judicieusement choisies avant d'envisager une étude de faisabilité à plus grande échelle. L'originalité de ce travail a consisté à évaluer, par le biais d'expérimentations en milieu contrôlé, l'efficacité d'une pluie et de lavages avec des solutions agressives sur des tuiles en argile et du béton contaminés avec desaérosols de césium et de strontium. L'eau de pluie s'est révélée peu efficace pour éliminer les radionucléides, son action est d'autant plus faible que l'intensité de la pluie est élevée. Une plus grande efficacité a été obtenue après 2 h 30 de lavage avec la solution NH4Cl (0,1 mol l-1) appliquée directement après la contamination. L'activité résiduelle est alors de 90 % sur les tuiles et de 40 % sur le béton. Les résultats obtenus sont moyens pour le béton mais peu satisfaisants pour les tuiles et confirment, dans des conditions de dépôt accidentel, la difficulté de déplacer une telle contamination.

The consequences of a severe nuclear accident on the agricultural environment, releasing 137Cs and 90Sr-enriched aerosols, have been studied within an original lysimetric facility driven in controlled conditions. Focal point of a research scope widely open to European collaborations, this facility has hosted several scientific programmes spread over about a decade (RESSAC and PEACE, notably), the principal achievements of which are provided in the form of a synthetic overview. After a brief reminder of the historical context strongly challenged by the Chernobyl accident within which this project has evolved, the originality of the instrumental set up used for simulating a nuclear accident at a small scale is presented. The addressed scientific aspects concern the clarification of radioecological mechanisms governing the behaviour of these two radionuclides in the soil-plant system. A particular focus is placed on foliar transfers and the resulting translocation, soil in-depth migration, chemical composition of the soil interstitial water, the influence of the later on root absorption which determines the soil-to-plant transfer, all aspects being stressed over a representative spectrum of plants, soil and climates. Based on a strategy of synergy between experiments and modelling developments, the achievements obtained are used to improve the predictive radioprotection tools.

Natural radioactivity is associated with the vast mineral resources in South Africa in such concentrations that the radionuclides from the natural uranium and thorium decay series are found to pose concern for public exposure to communities living around these areas. Consumption of water and food is usually the most important route by which natural radionuclides can enter the human body and assessment of natural radionuclide levels in different foods and diets is therefore important to estimate the intake of these radionuclides by man. Sensitive measurement of three major radionuclides (in addition to 238U, 234U, 232Th, 226Ra, 224Ra and 223Ra) is necessary to calculate the estimated annual dose with a high degree of certainty i.e. 230Th, 210Pb and 210Po, while 231Pa, 227Ac and 228Ra also require improved sensitivity. In order to evaluate the yearly dose due to an individual source at a screening level of 25 μSv/a, one is faced with a required lower limit of determination (LLD) of 0.1 to 0.5 Bq/kg for certain foodstuffs. In this study the potential radiological impact of foodstuffs grown in a catchment area influenced by mining and mineral processing industries in South Africa, was determined by measuring the natural radionuclides in a number of foodstuffs collected from the area. The radionuclides were measured by non-destructive techniques such as Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) and low background gamma spectrometry. The assessment of natural radionuclides in foods allowed us to evaluate the items that present the highest risk to the population, and compare this to the limits established by the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). From the public’s point of view it is important to ensure the population that the contaminant levels in specific food as a result of mining activities, do not exceed the permissible limits. For the majority of the analysed foodstuffs, the estimated dose was less than 250 μSv/a. Overestimation of dose, due to poor measurement detection limits, was clearly indicated for some of the samples. For most of the analysed nuclides, suitable data for evaluation of the yearly dose at the screening level of 25 μSv/a was obtained by broad energy gamma analysis of ashed samples. However, nuclides such as 230Th, 210Po and 231Pa has to be analysed by radiochemical separation through acid destruction of dried foodstuffs followed by individual element separations to provide suitable data with a low enough LLD not to result in an overestimation of the calculated dose.

Terrestrial contamination by 137Cs and 134 Cs since 1986 in France is held to originate in atmospheric nuclear weapon tests and/or the releases from the Chernobyl accident. Monthly measurements of radioactivity in terrestrial mosses are part of the monitoring protocol carried out by the Conseil Général of Tarn-et-Garonne to assess the environmental impact of the Golfech nuclear power plant radioactive releases. Since the commissioning of the NPP in 1990, these monthly measurements revealed a contamination by 137Cs and 134Cs (up to 700 and 60 BqKg-1 DW) in both sampling sites. This contamination decreased by a factor about 10 over 1990-2004 through three stages (134Cs undetectable since 1995). It is significantly correlated over large periods of time with the monthly levels of atmospheric halogens-aerosols releases by the Golfech NPP (95%, r2 = 0.35 to >0.84). These results are discussed in the light of the time since radioactive releases, of the operating and release conditions of/from the Golfech NPP and of the mosses sampled. These preliminary results bear evidence of an impact of the Golfech NPP on the terrestrial environment. They confirm that species of terrestrial mosses are particularly sensitive to low levels of atmospheric radioactive caesium contamination and are a good indicator of a radioactive fallout. They suggest that terrestrial mosses may serve to elaborate a predictive model of a caesium release, together with some relevant parameters and in the framework of a carefully defined monitoring protocol.

La sensibilité radioécologique représente l’intensité de la réponse globale d’un territoire à une pollution radioactive chronique ou accidentelle. Les perspectives d’application opérationnelle de ce concept sont explorées par l’IRSN dans le cadre du projet SENSIB. Le premier enjeu de SENSIB consiste à représenter globalement les conséquences territoriales d’une situation de contamination radioactive, ce qui nécessite de rassembler et d’analyser les données radioécologiques et contextuelles. À cet effet, diverses méthodes innovantes de traitement de la connaissance sont explorées. Le deuxième enjeu est de concevoir un outil unique de gestion de cette connaissance partagé par différents intervenants (autorités, population, experts), ce qui est envisagé par l’application de méthodes d’aide à la décision. La stratégie, les résultats préliminaires et les axes de recherche du projet SENSIB sont brièvement présentés.

La surveillance dosimétrique des travailleurs exposés au risque d’exposition externe répond à des exigences à la fois techniques, réglementaires et organisationnelles. Maillon essentiel du dispositif de radioprotection, cette surveillance individuelle doit être adaptée au poste de travail. Le choix des techniques à mettre en œuvre repose sur l’étude du poste de travail dont les résultats conditionnent à la fois le classement des travailleurs et le zonage radiologique des locaux. Des solutions satisfaisantes existent dans la grande majorité des cas. Des solutions rationnelles restent en revanche à trouver dans quelques situations spécifiques.

Cette étude présente une méthode de dosage de l'uranium dans les urines qui offre les avantages d'être rapide (30 min), simple et fine (seuil de détection à 0,32 µg/l). Cette méthode allie la rapidité de la minéralisation par micro-ondes àla précision de la mesure par spectrofluorimétrie parexcitation laser.

Avec des dépôts de 137Cs dépassant quelquefois 20 000 Bq m-2, certains coteaux de la vallée du Rhône ont été assez fortement touchés par les retombées de l'accident de Tchernobyl. C'est le cas à Cornas (Ardèche) près de Valence et à Vinsobres (Vaucluse) au nord de Vaison-la-Romaine. La vigne occupe dans ces régions l'essentiel des surfaces agricoles, pour la production d'un vin réputé. Cette étude montre que les conséquences des retombées de l'accident de Tchernobyl pour les vins de la vallée du Rhône ont été visibles mais très faibles. L'activité en 137Cs du vin produit en 1986 n'a pas atteint 1 Bq/l. Ces conséquences très limitées sont dues à la date des dépôts qui sont intervenus début mai 1986, alors que les vignes développaient à peine leurs premières feuilles. Depuis 1986, l'activité en 137Cs du vin a fortement décru jusqu'à revenir en 2000 à un niveau proche de celle d'avant l'accident : quelques millibecquerels par litre. Le césium ajouté aux sols, dans des proportions pourtant importantes, se trouve essentiellement dans les 20 premiers centimètres et est peu disponible pour les racines de la vigne.

Scales and sludge are commonly formed during oil and gas extracting and processing operations. They usually appear when injection and formation water with different chemical characteristics come into contact. When the produced water is brought to the surface alongside with the oil, a precipitate can be deposited on the walls of pipes and equipment, forming the so-called scales. Otherwise they can accumulate in the form of sludge on the bottom of storage tanks, separators, and other equipment. Radium is the main radionuclide brought to the surface with oil and produced water and it co-precipitates with barium forming complex compounds of sulfates, carbonates and silicates. These compounds are the main constituents of scale and sludge. The objective of this work was to relate the radium content of scales and sludge to their chemical and mineralogical composition. Samples were taken from a PETROBRAS Unit in the State of Sergipe, in Northeast Brazil. They were collected either from the inner surface of water pipes or from containers in the waste storage area of the Unit. Oil was separated from the solid material in a Soxhlet extractor equipment by using aguarras as solvent. The concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ra were determined by gamma spectrometry. Both the mineralogical and chemical composition of samples were determined by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence, respectively, and used to characterize samples as scales or sludge. The results showed that scales are mainly formed by BaSO4 and CaCO3 while sludge composition is quite variable, having higher contents of SiO2 and FeO3 than those observed on scale samples. The measured activity concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ra are strongly correlated for both kinds of samples.

Methodologies have been developed to allow impacts of ionising radiation on marine ecosystems to be evaluated within selected geographical settings. The stages in the assessment require initial information about unit concentrations of radionuclides in reference media to be collated. Activity concentrations for reference groups of flora and fauna and for representatives of these groups are then derived using an equilibrium concentration factor approach. Following this, dose-rates can be calculated using relevant dose conversion factors. Impacts on the environment are evaluated by comparison with dose-rates at which selected biological effects are known to occur and the natural radiation background. This paper focuses mainly on the transfer part of the assessment drawing attention to gaps in information that have been identified through review and providing an outline of methods that may be used to fill these gaps. Biokinetic models parameterised using allometric relationships have shown their utility in this respect. Initial work looking into the application of such models has met with some success with model predictions comparing favourably with the few empirical data available. Further work will be needed to validate the models for a large range of radionuclides and to consider uncertainty in model estimates through probabilistic analyses.

Une étude de l'impact dosimétrique du site de Marcoule sur les habitants de Codolet, le village considéré comme le plus exposé, a été réalisée par l'IPSN en 1996. Dans la partie impact lié à l'ingestion l'auteur a conclu à la nécessité de mieux connaître les habitudes alimentaires des habitants, et plus précisément les habitudes d'autoconsommation (consommation d'aliments d'origine locale, de production personnelle, fournis ou achetés). En effet en absence des habitudes d'autoconsommation “ réelles et actuelles ” la consommation a été considérée par l'auteur comme totalement de l'autoconsommation. Une enquête alimentaire a donc été réalisée en mai 1998 dans le village de Codolet mais aussi dans le village de Tresques, considéré comme un village non exposé, et dans la zone inondée de la Camargue lors des crues d'octobre 1993 et de janvier 1994. L'enquête est relative à une vingtaine de foyers sélectionnés dans chacun des trois lieux et le questionnaire d'enquête est constitué de 14 feuillets. Pour cette enquête, réalisée pendant une semaine complète, on utilise une unité “ fictive ” tenant compte de la grande variabilité de la composition des foyers. Cette unité est nommée “ unité de consommation, uc ” et elle s'exprime en g ou en cl par uc et par jour (g ou cl uc-1 j-1). Elle est en général assez peu différente d'une unité plus usuelle exprimée en g ou en l par habitant et par jour (g ou cl h-1 j-1). Les treize principaux aliments autoconsommés dans les trois échantillons enquêtés sont (moyennes en g ou cl uc-1 j-1) : pomme de terre (62), salade (42), tomate (18), carotte (16), poireau, haricot vert et fraise (13), cerise et radis (11) pour les légumes et les fruits ; œufs et poulet (15) pour les produits d'origine animale ; vin et eau (10) pour les liquides. Pour Codolet les valeurs d'autoconsommation des aliments pris en compte dans l'étude dosimétrique de 1996 sont toutes, à la seule exception du vin, très largement supérieures à celles relatives à la présente enquête. Une actualisation, avec nos valeurs, de cette étude dosimétrique aboutirait à une baisse très significative de la contribution de l'ingestion dans l'impact dosimétrique total.

Chlorine 36 is considered as part of the group III of radioactive wastes composed of the moderate radiotoxic radionuclides such as Carbon 14. As such and along with its long half-life (3.01 × 105 years) and its chemical form (chloride anion), it is a very important radionuclide to be taken into account in the environment thereby making its modelling an important goal.

We present in this paper the phenomenological approach developed at IRSN for modelling the behaviour of chloride 36 in the continental ecosystems. This model is a part of the SYMBIOSE programme (SYstemic approach for Modelling the fate of chemicals in the BIOSphere and the Ecological systems) whose main goal is to develop a modelling platform able to sustain an environmental chemical risk assessment. Such an approach has been found necessary for Chlorine 36 when the classic models (conventional transfer factor models and specific activity models) fail (for instance in case of acute release of radionuclides). Only the part of the model dealing with the agricultural soil-plant system is described here in detail: interaction matrices, components description, components equations, independent variables, and data. Then, we present an application of this model to investigate chlorine 36 behaviour in soils and uptake by plants after its discharge in groundwater from a radioactive waste deep storage site. Finally, we present results from an intercomparison study performed under the BIOPROTA international cooperation framework.

L'article présente les résultats des contrôles des concentrations en radon et en énergie alpha potentielle des descendants à vie courte effectués dans les mines de charbon en Pologne. Les changements irréguliers du facteur d'équilibre entre le radon et ses descendants ne permettent pas d'utiliser les contrôles de radon pour estimer le risque radiologique des mineurs. L'existence du risque est l'effet des systèmes d'exploitations du charbon et des systèmes d'aérages appliqués.

Depuis septembre 2005, l’Institut de radioprotection et de sûreté nucléaire (IRSN) étudie les activités de traitement par radiothérapie sous l’angle des facteurs humains et organisationnels, afin d’améliorer la sécurité des traitements. Bénéficiant d’une expérience d’analyse des événements dans l’industrie nucléaire, l’IRSN a utilisé cette approche pour diffuser en mars 2008, pour la première fois en France, l’analyse approfondie d’un accident de radiothérapie sous l’angle des facteurs humains et organisationnels. La méthode d’analyse est basée sur des entretiens et sur les traces écrites conservées par le centre hospitalier. Cette analyse visait à identifier les causes de l’écart constaté entre la dose prescrite par le radiothérapeute et la dose effectivement reçue par le patient. Ainsi, l’IRSN a tout d’abord constaté que les moyens de communication verbale (réunions techniques communes) et écrite (protocoles de traitement) n’ont pas permis, pour ce traitement, la transmission des informations nécessaires à la bonne réalisation des champs d’irradiation par les manipulateurs. Ensuite, cette analyse a fait apparaître qu’au cours de la préparation et de la réalisation de ce traitement, différents facteurs ont conduit à ce que des contrôles prévus ne soient pas réalisés. Enfin, l’analyse a révélé que des zones d’ombre persistent sur le déroulement de cet accident, faute de traçabilité d’un certain nombre d’actions clés. L’article identifie des pistes d’amélioration dans trois domaines : la coopération entre les praticiens, le contrôle des actions et la traçabilité des actions.

Nous avons étudié la possibilité d'effectuer une dosimétrie neutronique despersonnels à l'aide d'un dispositif individuel à microprocesseur, travaillant entemps réel (débitmètre). La plage énergétique à laquelle nous nous intéressonss'étend des neutrons thermiques à 5 MeV environ. Le système est basé,d'une part, sur une méthode différentielle permettant de s'affranchir partiellementdes grandeurs interférantes (interactions directes des photons γ et desneutrons sur le silicium) et du bruit et, d'autre part, sur un convertisseur depolyéthylène (CH2)n implanté par des atomes de bore (10B) qui effectue laconversion neutrons-particules chargées secondaires. Ce convertisseur optimisé,en utilisant des calculs de Monte-Carlo, permet d'obtenir une efficacitéintrinsèque quasi indépendante de l'énergie des neutrons. La détection esteffectuée par des diodes. L'utilisation de la méthode différentielle nous a amenésà l'étude de la symétrie des deux diodes. Nous avons pu montrer qu'unseuil bas d'équivalent de dose de 30 µSv peut être atteint pour les neutronsthermiques et rapides et qu'un débit d'équivalent de dose minimal d'une centainede µSv/h peut être mesuré.

The examination of sediment samples collected from the Yenisei River revealed the presence of artificial radionuclides characteristic of radioactive discharges from the MCC facility: isotopes of europium (152Eu, 154Eu, and 155Eu), cesium (137Cs and 134Cs), 60Co,90Sr, and transuranium elements. Radionuclide concentrations in sediment layers remained high as far as 240 km downstream of the MCC. The vertical distribution of radionuclides in sediment cores was very complex, and down-core variations were due to different amounts of radionuclides released by the MCC and due to variations in the hydrologic conditions in the river. Sequential extraction performed on samples of the upper layers of the sediment core showed different degrees of potential environmental availability of artificial radionuclides: the amounts of extracted 90Sr, 152Eu and 241Am were the largest (60–80% of initial activity), then followed 60Co (30%), 238,239,240Pu (15–30%), and, last, 137Cs (5–15%). The distribution of 238U among chemical fractions of sediments was similar to that of 60Co and 238,239,240Pu: 30–40% of 238U initial activity was extracted. In a few samples, 241Am was present in the unextractable form, which may be accounted for by the presence of microparticles of the reactor fuel.

Le technétium 99 est un produit de fission à vie longue, dont la production au cours de la combustion de l'uranium enrichi n'est pas à négliger. Des études concernant la gestion de ce déchet ontété mises en place au CEA. Celles-ci vont entraîner une exposition potentielle du personnel de recherche. Il était donc nécessaire de disposer d'une surveillance radiotoxicologique adaptée. Laméthode proposée permet une détection précoce de 99Tc dans les urines par scintillation liquide, en sachant que 10 % de la contamination par inhalation se retrouve dans les urines dès les 48premières heures après l'incorporation. Cette méthode est relativement sensible (limite de détection à 0,06 Bq ml-1, ce qui correspond à une incorporation par inhalation égale à 8,4 x 10-5 LAI soit 1,7 x 10$^{~3}$ Bq de 99Tc).

In pediatric radiology, radiological protection isof vital importance due to the great radio-sensitivity of body tissuesin childhood, which can come to present stochastic effects as childrenhave a longer life expectancy. The objective of this research isto establish diagnostic reference levels in chest exam pediatricpatients. The study, carried out in one of the largest pediatriccenters of the city of Medellin, the capital of the Department ofAntioquia, consisted of the calculation of the Entrance Skin Dose(ESD) for a sample of 814 chest radiographic studies in the anteroposterior(AP) and left lateral (L LAT) projections, and it was compared withthe doses obtained with the computational program PCXMC 2.0. Forthe estimate of the Entrance Skin Dose, data were collected from theexams, including the size of the radiation field, mAs and kVp. TheESD in chest exams for 5-year-old children was the only one thatexceeded the international reference levels, giving evidence ofthe need to optimize the techniques used in this type of study inthe institution under evaluation.

Bien que celane représente que le 1/500e de la LAI (limite d'incorporation) il est préférablede manipuler sous hotte ventilée et si possible de prélever sans ouvrir leflacon.

Countermeasures to reduce the transfer of a radionuclide from soil to plants are usually based on saturating the soil with a stable element that is a chemical analogue of that radionuclide. But when a radioactive contamination event occurs, it is seldom due to the evacuation of a pure radionuclide such as 137Cs. Instead, a mixture of radionuclides may be released into the environment. The countermeasures applied to reduce the transfer of one of them may also influence other radionuclides. We have developed an experimental procedure to check whether radiocaesium countermeasures are appropriate when other radionuclides are also involved, or have some disadvantages that may limit their use. It consists of growing wheat seeds under controlled laboratory conditions using Neubauer's plantlet method. This method has been in use for many years as a small-scale screening procedure to check a soil's capacity to provide the potassium that plants need as a nutrient. In particular, we used it to study the effectiveness and the disadvantages of the application of a potassium salt fertilizer to a soil contaminated with 134Cs, 90Sr, and 60Co. This countermeasure indeed reduced the uptake of 134Cs, but it also enhanced the uptake of 60Co. This enhancement was higher for the wheat stems than for the roots. For 90Sr, there was observed a slight increase due to the fertilizer.
