Uranium (238U) and thorium (232Th) concentrations were measured in different foods widely consumed in Morocco by using CR-39 and LR-115 type II solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). Data obtained were compared to those obtained by using isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). Total daily intakes of 238U and 232Th for a typical food basket were estimated to be 1.3 ± 0.1 mBq d-1 and 0.98 ± 0.08 mBq d-1, 1.4 ± 0.1 mBq d-1 and 1.06 ± 0.08 mBq d–1, 1.7 ± 0.1 mBq d–1 and 1.26 ± 0.08 mBq d–1 and 2.0 ± 0.1 mBq d–1 and 1.5 ± 0.1 Bq d–1 for the 2–7 years, 7–12 years, 12–17 years and adult’s age groups, respectively. Alpha-activities due to annual 238U and 232Th intakes from the ingestion of the studied foodstuffs were determined in different organs and tissues of the human body of members of the public by using the ICRP gastrointestinal tract and systemic part models for these radionuclides. Committed equivalent doses due to annual intakes of 238U and 232Th were evaluated in the human body organs and tissues for different age groups of the Moroccan population by exploiting data obtained for alpha-doses deposited by 1 Bq of 238U and 1 Bq of 232Th in the considered human organs and tissues. The influence of the mass of the target tissue and activities due to 238U and 232Th on the committed equivalent doses due to annual intakes of these radionuclides in the organs and tissues of the human body was studied.

Cet article présente une analyse des enjeux sociaux et économiques de la protection radiologique dans les territoires contaminés du fait de l'accident de Tchernobyl. Il s'appuie sur les résultatsde deux enquêtes réalisées en 1994 sur les conditions de vie des habitants d'une collectivité territoriale situé en Biélorussie à 180 km au nord de Tchernobyl. Une première partie présente lesdonnées radiologiques de la situation post-accidentelle du district avec une analyse de son impact démographique depuis 1986. Une seconde partie présente les enjeux de la protectionradiologique avec une description des modalités d'exposition des habitants des territoires contaminés et une évaluation des différents programmes de contre-mesures engagés par les autorités,dans le cadre législatif de 1991. Dans une dernière partie sont présentés les aspects économiques de la gestion post-accidentelle avec une analyse du budget du district de Tchetchersk et uneévaluation des conséquences de la situation radiologique sur les activités économique et surtout agricoles de ce district. La conclusion fait ressortir les difficultés auxquelles sont aujourd'huiconfrontées les autorités biélorusses. La présence désormais définitive de populations dans un environnement durablement contaminé pose une nouvelle catégorie de problèmes. Les objectifs deradioprotection doivent être resitués dans un ensemble de contraintes de différentes natures, notamment sociales et économiques. Le développement de la sécurité radiologique est indissociabledu retour d'une qualité de vie dans ces territoires. Il passe nécessairement par le redéploiement d'un climat de confiance sociale. Le dispositif législatif initial de gestion post-accidentelle doitêtre adapté pour donner plus d'autonomie aux acteurs locaux dans la reconstruction de conditions de vie satisfaisantes.

Evidence has emerged over the past decade for the existence of two cellular phenomenons which challenge the standard paradigms for the induction of biological effects by ionizing radiation. In both cases, important genetic changes arise in cells that in themselves receive no radiation exposure. In the first, radiation induces a type of transmissible genomic instability in cells that leads to a persistent enhancement in the rate at which genetic alterations including mutations and chromosomal aberrations arise in the descendents of the original irradiated cell after many generations of replication. In the bystander effect, damage signals are transmitted from irradiated to non-irradiated cells in the population, leading to the occurrence of biologic effects in these “bystander” cells. In this review, our current knowledge concerning these two phenomena is described and their potential impact on the estimation of risks of low level radiation exposure discussed.

Gross alpha and beta measurements are common procedures for screening water samples in order to estimate the level of total indicative dose (TID) from the radionuclides in water. However, it has been pointed out that gross alpha and beta measurements are not suitable for waters containing high concentrations of natural radionuclides, especially Ra-226 and Ra-228. Cambrian-Vendian aquifer system is the major source of public water supply in northern and north-eastern Estonia. The aquifer is known for its high radionuclide concentrations. The main sources of TID are Ra-226 and Ra-228, but the water also contains K-40. Other nuclides from uranium and thorium series may be present as well. A set of Ra-226, Ra-228 and K-40 activity concentrations measured by gammaspectrometry are studied to analyze the applicability of gross alpha and beta measurements in case of Cambrian-Vendian ground water. The calculations indicate that the levels suggested by WHO guidelines are not suitable for the Cambrian-Vendian ground water. Results on the applicability analysis are given.

Environmental risk assessment methodologies often require background dose-rates for wild flora and fauna to be derived in a robust and transparent way. To facilitate this task, information can be organised around reference organisms (ROs), entities that can be used as representatives of the broader ecosystem. In this study, generic datasets have been collated on levels of naturally occurring radionuclides in sediments, seawater and ROs for marine ecosystems. In some cases, data gap filling methods have been required owing to a paucity of information. Once full datasets have been acquired, dose conversion coefficients (DCCs) can be applied and dose-rate calculations can be performed probabilistically allowing the variability in the underlying datasets to be accounted for. Unweighted absorbed dose-rates for marine reference organisms lie between 0.02–1.2 µGy h-1, whereas weighted dose-rates fall in the range 0.08 µGy h-1 to 8.8 µGy h-1. Except for the special case of sea anemones/corals, the most important nuclides for the total dose-rates are 210Po and 226Ra for heterotrophic ROs (i.e. all vertebrate and invertebrate animals), whereas 226Ra and 228Th contribute most for autotrophic ROs (i.e. macroalgae, phytoplankton and aquatic plants). In addition, 40K has a considerable impact on unweighted dose-rates for all ROs. Non-parametric statistical tests have been applied to show whether there are differences between activity concentrations data for ROs and ICRP-defined Reference Animals and Plants (RAPs).

Radioactive contamination was studied in macrobenthic invertebrates and algae of the Abrosimov, Stepovoy and Tsivolky Bays of the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago and the adjacent regions of the Kara Sea during the cruises 73d and 81st on board R/V Professor Shtokman in the years 2005–2006. Maximum concentration 137Cs in sediment in studied area has been detected in the layer 10–12 cm in the Abrosimov Bay (150 Bq/kg) and in the layer 4–6 cm in the Stepovoy Bay (100 Bq/kg). Concentration of 137Cs in benthos was up to 3.19 Bq/kg of wet weight. The highest concentration has been found in benthos of the Abrosimov and Stepovoy Bays: the holothurian Myriotrochus rinkii, the isopod Saduria sabini, ophiuroids Ophiocten sericeum and Stegophiura nodosa. Myriotrochus rinkii, Saduria sabini and the brown alga Laminaria saccharina were characterized by the highest 137Cs concentration factor – 994, 599 and 425 respectively. Caesium-137 contamination occurs locally in the studied area closed to the radioactive waste disposal and does not affect on qualitative structure of the macrobenthic communities.

Within the EURANOS project data assimilation (DA) approaches have been successfullyapplied in two areas to improve the predictive power of simulation models used in theRODOS and ARGOS decision support systems. For the areas of atmospheric dispersionmodelling and of modelling the fate of radio-nuclides in urban areas the results ofdemonstration exercises are presented here. With the data assimilation module of theRIMPUFF dispersion code, predictions of the gamma dose rate are corrected with simulatedreadings of fixed detector stations. Using the DA capabilities of the IAMM package formapping the radioactive contamination in inhabited areas, predictions of a large scaledeposition model have been combined with hypothetical measurements on a local scale. Inboth examples the accuracy of the model predictions has been improved and theuncertainties have been reduced.

Le tritium est présent naturellement dans l'environnement sous forme d'eau tritiée et participe au cycle normal de l'eau. Aujourd'hui, les installations nucléaires constituent laprincipale source de tritium associée aux activités humaines et la production civile de tritium est estimée à environ 2.104 TBq/an, soit approximativement un tiers de la productionnaturelle. Compte tenu de l'aspect localisé des rejets, on observe autour de ces installations des teneurs en tritium plus élevées que la concentration naturelle (comprise entre 0,1et 0,9 Bq/l pour les eaux de surface). Les mesures effectuées en France, montrent des teneurs en tritium généralement inférieures à 10 Bq/l dans les eaux souterraines etinférieures à 20 Bq/l pour les fleuves, bien que certaines nappes phréatiques et quelques fleuves présentent localement une concentration de quelques dizaines, voire plusrarement quelques centaines de Bq/l à certaines périodes. Dans l'ensemble, les mesures réalisées en France apparaissent tout à fait cohérentes avec celles disponibles pour lesautres cours d'eau européens. En ce qui concerne les impacts associés au tritium dans les eaux, en considérant un individu dont tous les apports en eau proviendraient d'unesource présentant une concentration de 100 Bq/l, valeur dans l'ensemble cohérente avec les teneurs maximales relevées dans les eaux potables, la dose individuelle annuellecorrespondante serait de l'ordre du millième de l'irradiation naturelle.

The paper presents a simple technique for determination of the Equilibrium Equivalent Thoron Concentration (EETC). A solid-state nuclear alpha track detector (SSNATD) named CR-39 manufactured by BARYOTRAK is used as the detector. This technique can be utilized anywhere, provided that air sampling is carried out with a DC driving pump. Although the measurement of Thoron concentrations is useful enough for screening high Thoron exposure, it is still necessary to determine Thoron progeny concentrations in order to complete dose assessment. After applying this technique for determining the EETC in some selected areas in southern Thailand, it has been found that the obtained EETC values are consistent with the values presented in the report compiled by UNSCEAR in 2000.

The Monte Carlo MCNPX code is used to calculate the scatter fraction, making it possible to assess the scattered dose equivalent rate. Two materials are considered for the phantom: water and steel. The calculations are performed by considering beams of monoenergetic photons (in the range 10 keV to 10 MeV) and bremsstrahlung photons resulting from the interaction of electrons (30–900 keV) on a tungsten target. The variation of the scatter fraction is investigated as a function of the primary photon energy, the beam area at the phantom surface, the scattering angle, and filtration of the bremsstrahlung radiation. We note the shortcomings of the ISO standard issued in 2011, which does not take into account the beam area at the phantom surface, the scattering angle or the scattering materials, thus producing inconsistencies with the computed values given in this study and in the literature. Our values for the scatter fraction are comparable with those given in the literature (e.g. NCRP). As regards the bremsstrahlung radiation, we note the influence of filtration, in particular at low energies. The scatter fractions given here are compatible with the calculation of the ambient dose equivalent, whereas in the literature, they are systematically used for the calculation of air kerma rates. We also obtain scatter fractions for water that are higher by a factor of 5 compared with steel.

Le code de la santé publique et notamment l’arrêté du 11 janvier 2007, relatif auxlimites et références de qualité des eaux brutes et des eaux destinées à la consommationhumaine, fixe quatre indicateurs de la qualité radiologique des eaux du robinet(l’activité αglobale, l’activité β globale, l’activité du tritium et la dose totaleindicative), ainsi que des valeurs guides et des références de qualité. Les chroniquesissues de la surveillance des eaux filtrées du Rhône aval montrent que, si laradioactivité d’origine naturelle demeure bien évidemment constante au cours du temps, lesniveaux de contamination radioactive d’origine artificielle ont fortement diminué à partirdu début des années 90, de 10 à 100 fois suivant les radionucléides. Les donnéessoulignent également qu’aucune des limites d’activités α globale, β globale et en tritium n’aété dépassée dans l’eau filtrée du Rhône aval au cours de l’ère industrielle nucléaire.Les doses totales indicatives (DTI) calculées à partir des prélèvements d’eau filtrée duRhône aval (canal Philippe Lamour – Réseau hydraulique régional propriété de la régionLanguedoc Roussillon géré par BRL), de l’Orb et de l’Hérault effectués en 2011 sont trèsinférieures à la valeur de référence de 100 μSv/an. La contribution à la DTI des radionucléidesartificiels détectés dans ces hydrosystèmes est en outre négligeable (<0,01 %).

Model predictions of solute transport in a wetland were compared with tracer experimental data to illustrate that the number of compartments in a compartmental model should be selected according to certain rules to accurately describe the transport process. If the input pulse is short, the model structure affects the output significantly. The temporal moments of the residence time distribution was obtained from a general solution of the compartmental model in the Laplace domain derived with an arbitrary inflow pollutograph. The variance of the residence time can be used as a useful tool to analyse the effect of model structure and long-term inflow pollutograph on the response of the model predictions.

Dans le cadre d'une étude concernant l'impact sur l'environnement des usines de phosphates implantées dans la région du golfe de Gabès dans le sud tunisien, une série de mesures préliminaires a été récemment conduite. Douze échantillons de sol ont été prélevés le long du golf de Gabès au voisinage d'une usine de traitement des minerais de phosphates. L'analyse de ces échantillons de sol par spectrométrie gamma haute résolution a révélé la présence d'une activité gamma de plus de 1 700 Bq/kg due à la présence des radio-isotopes : 212Pb, 226Ra, 214Pb, 214Bi, et 235U. Cette activité reste pratiquement constante même à une distance de plus d'un kilomètre du site industriel que ce soit dans le milieu terrestre que dans le milieu marin.

European computerised decision support systems are currently targeted for large accidental atmospheric contaminant releases from nuclear installations. To make these systems applicable also for malicious dispersion events, such as ‘dirty bomb’ blasts, a series of modifications and extensions are necessary. Also European decision support handbooks need supplementary sections to cover the features of these types of scenarios. An overview is given of the requirements.

To quantitatively evaluate OBT production after a nighttime wet deposition of atmospheric HTO onto land surface, numerical experiments using a sophisticated tritium transport model (SOLVEG-II) were conducted. For a nighttime rain actually observed at a grassland site, two hypothetical scenarios for wet deposition of HTO were made; 0.1-folded and 10-folded case, each having rain HTO concentration at 0.1 folds and 10 folds of equilibrium concentration of ground-level air HTO concentration. Calculation results showed atmospheric HTO concentration after the rain at 10-folded case was more than an order of magnitude larger than that at 0.1-folded case, affected by interception and evaporation of rain HTO with leaves, and, by a larger HTO re-emission from soil. After the rain, due to these heightened atmospheric HTO, TFWT concentration in leaf cellular water at 10-folded case kept an order, or more, larger than that at 0.1-folded case. As a result, OBT produced in leaves over nine-day after the rain at 10-folded case was 18 times larger than that at 0.1-folded case. We therefore concluded that nighttime wet deposition of HTO pronouncedly increases OBT formation if rain HTO concentration exceeds equilibrium concentration for the air HTO near the ground.

Un défibrillateur automatique implantable (DAI) a été implanté chez un travailleur d’EDF potentiellement exposé à un champ magnétique 50 Hz élevé. Le fonctionnement du DAI peut théoriquement être perturbé par les expositions aux champs magnétiques rencontrées au cours de l’activité professionnelle. À partir de cette étude de cas, nous présentons une approche pour évaluer l’aptitude au travail dans ce type de situation. Le protocole consiste à mesurer le champ magnétique aux différents endroits où le travailleur est susceptible d’aller au cours de son activité professionnelle, et en sa présence, à surveiller en même temps le fonctionnement du DAI. Il s’agissait d’un DAI de marque Medtronic, programmé en mode bipolaire. Dans les différents lieux, le champ magnétique maximum mesuré au niveau du DAI a été de 650 µT. Aucun dysfonctionnement n’a été enregistré en mode bipolaire. Suite à ces mesures et contrôles du DAI, l’agent a été déclaré apte et a repris ses fonctions professionnelles antérieures. Deux ans après, aucun incident n’a été rapporté.
