Une étude de l'impact dosimétrique du site de Marcoule sur les habitants de Codolet, le village considéré comme le plus exposé, a été réalisée par l'IPSN en 1996. Dans la partie impact lié à l'ingestion l'auteur a conclu à la nécessité de mieux connaître les habitudes alimentaires des habitants, et plus précisément les habitudes d'autoconsommation (consommation d'aliments d'origine locale, de production personnelle, fournis ou achetés). En effet en absence des habitudes d'autoconsommation “ réelles et actuelles ” la consommation a été considérée par l'auteur comme totalement de l'autoconsommation. Une enquête alimentaire a donc été réalisée en mai 1998 dans le village de Codolet mais aussi dans le village de Tresques, considéré comme un village non exposé, et dans la zone inondée de la Camargue lors des crues d'octobre 1993 et de janvier 1994. L'enquête est relative à une vingtaine de foyers sélectionnés dans chacun des trois lieux et le questionnaire d'enquête est constitué de 14 feuillets. Pour cette enquête, réalisée pendant une semaine complète, on utilise une unité “ fictive ” tenant compte de la grande variabilité de la composition des foyers. Cette unité est nommée “ unité de consommation, uc ” et elle s'exprime en g ou en cl par uc et par jour (g ou cl uc-1 j-1). Elle est en général assez peu différente d'une unité plus usuelle exprimée en g ou en l par habitant et par jour (g ou cl h-1 j-1). Les treize principaux aliments autoconsommés dans les trois échantillons enquêtés sont (moyennes en g ou cl uc-1 j-1) : pomme de terre (62), salade (42), tomate (18), carotte (16), poireau, haricot vert et fraise (13), cerise et radis (11) pour les légumes et les fruits ; œufs et poulet (15) pour les produits d'origine animale ; vin et eau (10) pour les liquides. Pour Codolet les valeurs d'autoconsommation des aliments pris en compte dans l'étude dosimétrique de 1996 sont toutes, à la seule exception du vin, très largement supérieures à celles relatives à la présente enquête. Une actualisation, avec nos valeurs, de cette étude dosimétrique aboutirait à une baisse très significative de la contribution de l'ingestion dans l'impact dosimétrique total.

Cet article présente une analyse des enjeux sociaux et économiques de la protection radiologique dans les territoires contaminés du fait de l'accident de Tchernobyl. Il s'appuie sur les résultatsde deux enquêtes réalisées en 1994 sur les conditions de vie des habitants d'une collectivité territoriale situé en Biélorussie à 180 km au nord de Tchernobyl. Une première partie présente lesdonnées radiologiques de la situation post-accidentelle du district avec une analyse de son impact démographique depuis 1986. Une seconde partie présente les enjeux de la protectionradiologique avec une description des modalités d'exposition des habitants des territoires contaminés et une évaluation des différents programmes de contre-mesures engagés par les autorités,dans le cadre législatif de 1991. Dans une dernière partie sont présentés les aspects économiques de la gestion post-accidentelle avec une analyse du budget du district de Tchetchersk et uneévaluation des conséquences de la situation radiologique sur les activités économique et surtout agricoles de ce district. La conclusion fait ressortir les difficultés auxquelles sont aujourd'huiconfrontées les autorités biélorusses. La présence désormais définitive de populations dans un environnement durablement contaminé pose une nouvelle catégorie de problèmes. Les objectifs deradioprotection doivent être resitués dans un ensemble de contraintes de différentes natures, notamment sociales et économiques. Le développement de la sécurité radiologique est indissociabledu retour d'une qualité de vie dans ces territoires. Il passe nécessairement par le redéploiement d'un climat de confiance sociale. Le dispositif législatif initial de gestion post-accidentelle doitêtre adapté pour donner plus d'autonomie aux acteurs locaux dans la reconstruction de conditions de vie satisfaisantes.

L'article présente les résultats des contrôles des concentrations en radon et en énergie alpha potentielle des descendants à vie courte effectués dans les mines de charbon en Pologne. Les changements irréguliers du facteur d'équilibre entre le radon et ses descendants ne permettent pas d'utiliser les contrôles de radon pour estimer le risque radiologique des mineurs. L'existence du risque est l'effet des systèmes d'exploitations du charbon et des systèmes d'aérages appliqués.

Evidence has emerged over the past decade for the existence of two cellular phenomenons which challenge the standard paradigms for the induction of biological effects by ionizing radiation. In both cases, important genetic changes arise in cells that in themselves receive no radiation exposure. In the first, radiation induces a type of transmissible genomic instability in cells that leads to a persistent enhancement in the rate at which genetic alterations including mutations and chromosomal aberrations arise in the descendents of the original irradiated cell after many generations of replication. In the bystander effect, damage signals are transmitted from irradiated to non-irradiated cells in the population, leading to the occurrence of biologic effects in these “bystander” cells. In this review, our current knowledge concerning these two phenomena is described and their potential impact on the estimation of risks of low level radiation exposure discussed.

In pediatric radiology, radiological protection isof vital importance due to the great radio-sensitivity of body tissuesin childhood, which can come to present stochastic effects as childrenhave a longer life expectancy. The objective of this research isto establish diagnostic reference levels in chest exam pediatricpatients. The study, carried out in one of the largest pediatriccenters of the city of Medellin, the capital of the Department ofAntioquia, consisted of the calculation of the Entrance Skin Dose(ESD) for a sample of 814 chest radiographic studies in the anteroposterior(AP) and left lateral (L LAT) projections, and it was compared withthe doses obtained with the computational program PCXMC 2.0. Forthe estimate of the Entrance Skin Dose, data were collected from theexams, including the size of the radiation field, mAs and kVp. TheESD in chest exams for 5-year-old children was the only one thatexceeded the international reference levels, giving evidence ofthe need to optimize the techniques used in this type of study inthe institution under evaluation.

Gross alpha and beta measurements are common procedures for screening water samples in order to estimate the level of total indicative dose (TID) from the radionuclides in water. However, it has been pointed out that gross alpha and beta measurements are not suitable for waters containing high concentrations of natural radionuclides, especially Ra-226 and Ra-228. Cambrian-Vendian aquifer system is the major source of public water supply in northern and north-eastern Estonia. The aquifer is known for its high radionuclide concentrations. The main sources of TID are Ra-226 and Ra-228, but the water also contains K-40. Other nuclides from uranium and thorium series may be present as well. A set of Ra-226, Ra-228 and K-40 activity concentrations measured by gammaspectrometry are studied to analyze the applicability of gross alpha and beta measurements in case of Cambrian-Vendian ground water. The calculations indicate that the levels suggested by WHO guidelines are not suitable for the Cambrian-Vendian ground water. Results on the applicability analysis are given.

Environmental risk assessment methodologies often require background dose-rates for wild flora and fauna to be derived in a robust and transparent way. To facilitate this task, information can be organised around reference organisms (ROs), entities that can be used as representatives of the broader ecosystem. In this study, generic datasets have been collated on levels of naturally occurring radionuclides in sediments, seawater and ROs for marine ecosystems. In some cases, data gap filling methods have been required owing to a paucity of information. Once full datasets have been acquired, dose conversion coefficients (DCCs) can be applied and dose-rate calculations can be performed probabilistically allowing the variability in the underlying datasets to be accounted for. Unweighted absorbed dose-rates for marine reference organisms lie between 0.02–1.2 µGy h-1, whereas weighted dose-rates fall in the range 0.08 µGy h-1 to 8.8 µGy h-1. Except for the special case of sea anemones/corals, the most important nuclides for the total dose-rates are 210Po and 226Ra for heterotrophic ROs (i.e. all vertebrate and invertebrate animals), whereas 226Ra and 228Th contribute most for autotrophic ROs (i.e. macroalgae, phytoplankton and aquatic plants). In addition, 40K has a considerable impact on unweighted dose-rates for all ROs. Non-parametric statistical tests have been applied to show whether there are differences between activity concentrations data for ROs and ICRP-defined Reference Animals and Plants (RAPs).

Le technétium 99 est un produit de fission à vie longue, dont la production au cours de la combustion de l'uranium enrichi n'est pas à négliger. Des études concernant la gestion de ce déchet ontété mises en place au CEA. Celles-ci vont entraîner une exposition potentielle du personnel de recherche. Il était donc nécessaire de disposer d'une surveillance radiotoxicologique adaptée. Laméthode proposée permet une détection précoce de 99Tc dans les urines par scintillation liquide, en sachant que 10 % de la contamination par inhalation se retrouve dans les urines dès les 48premières heures après l'incorporation. Cette méthode est relativement sensible (limite de détection à 0,06 Bq ml-1, ce qui correspond à une incorporation par inhalation égale à 8,4 x 10-5 LAI soit 1,7 x 10$^{~3}$ Bq de 99Tc).

Depuis septembre 2005, l’Institut de radioprotection et de sûreté nucléaire (IRSN) étudie les activités de traitement par radiothérapie sous l’angle des facteurs humains et organisationnels, afin d’améliorer la sécurité des traitements. Bénéficiant d’une expérience d’analyse des événements dans l’industrie nucléaire, l’IRSN a utilisé cette approche pour diffuser en mars 2008, pour la première fois en France, l’analyse approfondie d’un accident de radiothérapie sous l’angle des facteurs humains et organisationnels. La méthode d’analyse est basée sur des entretiens et sur les traces écrites conservées par le centre hospitalier. Cette analyse visait à identifier les causes de l’écart constaté entre la dose prescrite par le radiothérapeute et la dose effectivement reçue par le patient. Ainsi, l’IRSN a tout d’abord constaté que les moyens de communication verbale (réunions techniques communes) et écrite (protocoles de traitement) n’ont pas permis, pour ce traitement, la transmission des informations nécessaires à la bonne réalisation des champs d’irradiation par les manipulateurs. Ensuite, cette analyse a fait apparaître qu’au cours de la préparation et de la réalisation de ce traitement, différents facteurs ont conduit à ce que des contrôles prévus ne soient pas réalisés. Enfin, l’analyse a révélé que des zones d’ombre persistent sur le déroulement de cet accident, faute de traçabilité d’un certain nombre d’actions clés. L’article identifie des pistes d’amélioration dans trois domaines : la coopération entre les praticiens, le contrôle des actions et la traçabilité des actions.

Within the EURANOS project data assimilation (DA) approaches have been successfullyapplied in two areas to improve the predictive power of simulation models used in theRODOS and ARGOS decision support systems. For the areas of atmospheric dispersionmodelling and of modelling the fate of radio-nuclides in urban areas the results ofdemonstration exercises are presented here. With the data assimilation module of theRIMPUFF dispersion code, predictions of the gamma dose rate are corrected with simulatedreadings of fixed detector stations. Using the DA capabilities of the IAMM package formapping the radioactive contamination in inhabited areas, predictions of a large scaledeposition model have been combined with hypothetical measurements on a local scale. Inboth examples the accuracy of the model predictions has been improved and theuncertainties have been reduced.

Widespread contamination occurred in the building in which radiation waste was handled. An occurrence of internal contamination of workers was also suspected. Therefore, workers were measured in vivo and bioassay was performed too. Estimation of committed effective dose had to be based on results of excretion analysis as irremovable surface contamination occurred on the skin and hair of workers, thus influencing results of in vivo measurements. The results of bioassay of 7 workers are presented. Intakes and committed effective doses were calculated from excretion data using IMBA Professional Plus software. The best fits for the most of workers were obtained when combination of acute and chronic intakes was used. Acute intakes varied from 135 Bq to 1300 Bq, chronic intakes from 0.03 Bq/d to 0.3 Bq/d. Committed effective doses from 3 to 36 mSv were estimated for individual workers.

The ASN launched in July 2007 a system of notification of significant events dealing with ionising radiation, called ESRs. The ESRs notified to the ASN in the medical field have been increasing since 2007 and amounted to a total of 2300. The information showed that the medical activities with the most important implications for radiation protection regarding professionals are interventional radiology, with dose limit overruns, brachytherapy and nuclear medicine, with internal contamination of operators. For patients, deterministic effects were observed in interventional radiology as well as large doses in nuclear medicine, when the process of issuing radiopharmaceuticals is not managed, with the worst ESR being a partial removal of the thyroid. Many events involve leaks of radioactive waste and emphasise the need to strengthen the maintenance and monitoring facilities, and can cause major disruptions of service with delays in the delivery of care. The feedback emphasises the importance of empowering medical physicists and radiation protection officers to implement steps of quality management and risk management as well as clinical audits.

La connaissance du devenir chimique de l'uranium en milieu biologique réclame des études plus approfondies pour comprendre le comportement de l'uranium dans l'organisme. La caractérisationdes différentes formes complexées de l'ion uranyle peut être améliorée en combinant deux techniques : la Spectrofluorimétrie Laser à Résolution Temporelle (SLRT) et l'Electrophorèse Capillaire(EC). En effet, l'EC, adoptant le mode de Focalisation IsoElectrique (CIEF), permet la séparation des complexes suivant leurs points Isoélectriques (pI) tandis que la SLRT est une méthode despéciation à bas niveau qui rend possible l'identification des complexes de l'ion uranyle au moyen de la résolution temporelle et de la déconvolution spectrale. Les résultats qui concernent aussibien les systèmes inorganiques (phosphate, bicarbonate) que les systèmes biologiques (citrate, transférine) sont présentés et discutés. La complexation uranium - transférine est mise enévidence par l'utilisation de l'EC en mode CIEF.

European computerised decision support systems are currently targeted for large accidental atmospheric contaminant releases from nuclear installations. To make these systems applicable also for malicious dispersion events, such as ‘dirty bomb’ blasts, a series of modifications and extensions are necessary. Also European decision support handbooks need supplementary sections to cover the features of these types of scenarios. An overview is given of the requirements.

To quantitatively evaluate OBT production after a nighttime wet deposition of atmospheric HTO onto land surface, numerical experiments using a sophisticated tritium transport model (SOLVEG-II) were conducted. For a nighttime rain actually observed at a grassland site, two hypothetical scenarios for wet deposition of HTO were made; 0.1-folded and 10-folded case, each having rain HTO concentration at 0.1 folds and 10 folds of equilibrium concentration of ground-level air HTO concentration. Calculation results showed atmospheric HTO concentration after the rain at 10-folded case was more than an order of magnitude larger than that at 0.1-folded case, affected by interception and evaporation of rain HTO with leaves, and, by a larger HTO re-emission from soil. After the rain, due to these heightened atmospheric HTO, TFWT concentration in leaf cellular water at 10-folded case kept an order, or more, larger than that at 0.1-folded case. As a result, OBT produced in leaves over nine-day after the rain at 10-folded case was 18 times larger than that at 0.1-folded case. We therefore concluded that nighttime wet deposition of HTO pronouncedly increases OBT formation if rain HTO concentration exceeds equilibrium concentration for the air HTO near the ground.

A grid model was developed to combine small-scale grid resolution and long-term predictions of radionuclide dispersion in shallow seas. A predictor-corrector algorithm ensures an unconditional stability of the model. Four modules calculate the concentration of suspended sediments, the dispersion of radionuclides in the marine environment, and the doses to members of the public and marine biota. The model was applied to the dispersion of liquid effluent in the Irish Sea from the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant, Cumbria (UK). The concentration factors and partition coefficients have been calibrated for biota species and local conditions. The validation against environmental samples for twenty-two radionuclides shows a good agreement between predicted and measured values.

Edible parts of the shellfish Mytella falcata collected in Mundaú Lagoon, a tropical estuary in the northeast coast of Brazil, were analyzed for 210Po contents. This lagoon serves as an estuary to the Mundaú River and a phosphate fertilizers factory is installed in its right margin. The bivalves were manually collected during the first two weeks of March 2007 and February 2008. The method for 210Po determination consisted of spontaneous deposition on copper disks followed by alpha counting. A decrease of the activity concentration of 210Po with soft tissue weighs was achieved, presenting a significant linear relationship (p < 0.05). The average value found for the activity concentration of 210Po in Mytella falcata was 88.4 Bq ⋅ kg-1 wet weight.
