Astrophysical measurements regarding compact stars are just ahead of a big evolution jump, since the NICER experiment deployed on ISS on 2017 June 14. This will provide soon data that would enable the determination of compact star radius with less than 10% error. This can be further constrained by the new observation of gravitational waves originated from merging neutron stars, GW170817. This poses new challenges to nuclear models aiming to explain the structure of super dense nuclear matter found in neutron stars. Detailed studies of the QCD phase diagram show the importance of bosonic quantum fluctuations in the cold dense matter equation of state. Here we used a demonstrative model with one bosonic and one fermionic degree of freedom coupled by Yukawa coupling, we show the effect of bosonic quantum fluctuations on compact star observables such as mass, radius, and compactness. We have also calculated the difference in the value of compressibility which is caused by quantum fluctuations. The above-mentioned quantities are calculated in the mean field, one-loop, and in high order many loop approximation. The results show that the magnitude of these effects is in the range of 4–5%, which place it into the region where modern measurements may detect it. This forms a base for further investigations that how these results carry over to more complicated models.

Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBFs) are one of the most powerful techniques to measure the distance and to constrain the unresolved stellar content of extragalactic systems. For a given bandpass, the absolute SBF magnitude M depends on the properties of the underlying stellar population. Multi-band SBFs allow scientists to probe different stages of the stellar evolution: ultraviolet and blue wavelength band SBFs are sensitive to the evolution of stars within the hot horizontal branch and post-asymptotic giant branch phases, whereas optical SBF magnitudes explore the stars within the red giant branch and horizontal branch regimes. Near- and far-infrared SBF luminosities probe the important stellar evolution stage within the asymptotic giant branch and thermally pulsating asymptotic giant branch phases. Since the first successful application by Tonry and Schneider, a multiplicity of works have used this method to expand the distance scale up to 150 Mpc and beyond. This article gives a historical background of distance measurements, reviews the basic concepts of the SBF technique, presents a broad sample of investigations and discusses possible selection effects, biases, and limitations of the method. In particular, exciting new developments and improvements in the field of stellar population synthesis are discussed that are essential to understand the physics and properties of the populations in unresolved stellar systems. Further, promising future directions of the SBF technique are presented. With new upcoming space-based satellites such as Gaia, the SBF method will remain as one of the most important tools to derive distances to galaxies with unprecedented accuracy and to give detailed insights into the stellar content of globular clusters and galaxies.

There are three distinct types of ‘coherent emission’ in astrophysical plasmas: plasma emission (e.g. in solar radio bursts), electron cyclotron maser emission (e.g. in Jupiter's radio bursts), and pulsar radio emission. The development and current status of our understanding of coherent emission is reviewed, concentrating on plasma emission and electron cyclotron maser emission for which there is direct information on the distributions of electrons that produce the radiation. A generic model for a coherent emission process involves a maser generating radiation in a natural mode of the ambient plasma, and operating near marginal stability. A specific coherent emission mechanism involves the form of free energy to drive the maser, a pump that provides the free energy, and the plasma instability that leads to wave growth. The nature of coherence and its measurement through higher order intensity correlations are discussed.

The latest generation of radio astronomy interferometers will conduct all sky surveys with data products consisting of petabytes of spectral line data. Traditional approaches to identifying and parameterising the astrophysical sources within this data will not scale to datasets of this magnitude, since the performance of workstations will not keep up with the real-time generation of data. For this reason, it is necessary to employ high performance computing systems consisting of a large number of processors connected by a high-bandwidth network. In order to make use of such supercomputers substantial modifications must be made to serial source finding code. To ease the transition, this work presents the Scalable Source Finder Framework, a framework providing storage access, networking communication and data composition functionality, which can support a wide range of source finding algorithms provided they can be applied to subsets of the entire image. Additionally, the Parallel Gaussian Source Finder was implemented using SSoFF, utilising Gaussian filters, thresholding, and local statistics. PGSF was able to search on a 256GB simulated dataset in under 24 minutes, significantly less than the 8 to 12 hour observation that would generate such a dataset.

The Galactic TeV ${\gamma}$ -ray source ${\mathrm{HESS\,J}1804{-}216}$ is currently an unidentified source. In an attempt to unveil its origin, we present here the most detailed study of interstellar gas using data from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey, 7- and 12-mm wavelength Mopra surveys and Southern Galactic Plane Survey of HI. Several components of atomic and molecular gas are found to overlap ${\mathrm{HESS\,J}1804{-}216}$ at various velocities along the line of sight. The CS(1-0) emission clumps confirm the presence of dense gas. Both correlation and anti-correlation between the gas and TeV ${\gamma}$ -ray emission have been identified in various gas tracers, enabling several origin scenarios for the TeV ${\gamma}$ -ray emission from ${\mathrm{HESS\,J}1804{-}216}$ . For a hadronic scenario, ${\mathrm{SNR\,G}8.7{-}0.1}$ and the progenitor supernova remnant (SNR) of ${\mathrm{PSR\,J}1803{-}2137}$ require cosmic ray (CR) enhancement factors of ${\mathord{\sim} 50}$ times the solar neighbour CR flux value to produce the TeV ${\gamma}$ -ray emission. Assuming an isotropic diffusion model, CRs from both these SNRs require a slow diffusion coefficient, as found for other TeV SNRs associated with adjacent ISM gas. The morphology of gas located at 3.8 kpc (the dispersion measure distance to ${\mathrm{PSR\,J}1803{-}2137}$ ) tends to anti-correlate with features of the TeV emission from ${\mathrm{HESS\,J}1804{-}216}$ , making the leptonic scenario possible. Both pure hadronic and pure leptonic scenarios thus remain plausible.

We present results from a multiwavelength study of the blazar PKS 1954–388 at radio, UV, X-ray, and gamma-ray energies. A RadioAstron observation at 1.66 GHz in June 2012 resulted in the detection of interferometric fringes on baselines of 6.2 Earth-diameters. This suggests a source frame brightness temperature of greater than 2 × 1012 K, well in excess of both equipartition and inverse Compton limits and implying the existence of Doppler boosting in the core. An 8.4-GHz TANAMI VLBI image, made less than a month after the RadioAstron observations, is consistent with a previously reported superluminal motion for a jet component. Flux density monitoring with the Australia Telescope Compact Array confirms previous evidence for long-term variability that increases with observing frequency. A search for more rapid variability revealed no evidence for significant day-scale flux density variation. The ATCA light-curve reveals a strong radio flare beginning in late 2013, which peaks higher, and earlier, at higher frequencies. Comparison with the Fermi gamma-ray light-curve indicates this followed ~ 9 months after the start of a prolonged gamma-ray high-state—a radio lag comparable to that seen in other blazars. The multiwavelength data are combined to derive a Spectral Energy Distribution, which is fitted by a one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) model with the addition of external Compton (EC) emission.

In this contribution a broad overview of the methodologies of cosmological N-body simulations and a short introduction explaining the general idea behind such simulations is presented. After explaining how to set up the initial conditions using a set of N particles two (diverse) techniques are presented for evolving these particles forward in time under the influence of their self-gravity. One technique (tree codes) is solely based upon a sophistication of the direct particle–particle summation whereas the other method relies on the continuous (de-)construction of arbitrarily shaped grids and is realized in adaptive mesh refinement codes.

Bidirectional reflectance of a surface is defined as the ratio of the scattered radiation at the detector to the incident irradiance as a function of geometry. Accurate knowledge of the bidirectional reflection function for layers composed of discrete, randomly positioned scattering particles is essential for many remote sensing, engineering, and biophysical applications, as well as for different areas of astrophysics. Computations of bidirectional reflection functions for plane parallel particulate layers are usually reduced to solving the radiative transfer equation by the existing techniques. In this work we present our laboratory data on bidirectional reflectance versus phase angle for two sample sizes of alumina, 0.3 and 1 μm, for the He–Ne laser at wavelengths of 632.8 nm (red) and 543.5 nm (green). The nature of the phase curves of the asteroids depends on the parameters like particle size, composition, porosity, roughness, etc. In the present study we analyze data which are being generated using a single scattering phase function, that is, Mie theory of treating particles as a compact sphere. The well-known Hapke formula, along with different particle phase functions such as Mie and Henyey–Greenstein, will be used to model the laboratory data obtained at the asteroid laboratory of Assam University.

We have used the University of Tasmania Mt Pleasant 26-m radio telescope to investigate the polarisation characteristics of a sample of strong 6.7 GHz methanol masers, the first spectral line polarisation observations to be undertaken with this instrument. As part of this process we have developed a new technique for calibrating linear polarisation spectral line observations. This calibration method gives results consistent with more traditional techniques, but requires much less observing time on the telescope. We have made the first polarisation measurements of a number of 6.7 GHz methanol masers and find linear polarisation at levels from a few to 10% in most of the sources we observed, consistent with previous results. We also investigated the circular polarisation produced by Zeeman splitting in the 6.7 GHz methanol maser G9.62+0.20 to get an estimate of the line of sight magnetic field strength of 35±7 mG.

This work presents a method for determining the accuracy of a source finder algorithm for spectral line radio astronomy data and the Source Finder Accuracy Evaluator (SFAE), a program that implements this method. The accuracy of a source finder is defined in terms of its completeness, reliability, and accuracy of the parameterisation of the sources that were found. These values are calculated by executing the source finder on an image with a known source catalogue, then comparing the output of the source finder to the known catalogue. The intended uses of SFAE include determining the most accurate source finders for use in a survey, determining the types of radio sources a particular source finder is capable of accurately locating, and identifying optimum parameters and areas of improvement for these algorithms. This paper demonstrates a sample of accuracy information that can be obtained through this method, using a simulated ASKAP data cube and the duchamp source finder.

We present two absolute magnitude calibrations, MJ and MKs, for red giants with the colour–magnitude diagrams of five Galactic clusters with different metallicities, i.e. M92, M13, M71, M67, and NGC 6791. The combination of the absolute magnitudes of the red giant sequences with the corresponding metallicities provides calibration for absolute magnitude estimation for red giants for a given colour. The calibrations for MJ and MKs are defined in the colour intervals 1.3≤(V−J)0≤2.8 and 1.75≤(V−Ks)0≤3.80 mag, respectively, and they cover the metallicity interval −2.15≤[Fe/H]≤+0.37 dex. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the intervals −0.08<ΔMJ≤+0.34 and -0.10< Δ MKs≤ +0.27 mag for MJ and MKs, respectively. The means and standard deviations of the residuals are 〈ΔMJ〉=0.137 and σMJ=0.080, and $〈 Δ MKs〉 =0.109 and σMKs=0.123 mag. The derived relations are applicable to stars older than 4 Gyr, the age of the youngest calibrating cluster.

The Hirsch h-index is now widely used as a metric to compare individual researchers. To evaluate it in the context of Australian astronomy, the h-index for every member of the Astronomical Society of Australia (ASA) is found using NASA's Astrophysics Data System Bibliographic Services. Percentiles of the h-index distribution are detailed for a variety of categories of ASA members, including students. This enables a list of the top ten Australian researchers by h-index to be produced. These top researchers have h-index values in the range 53<h<77, which is less than that recently reported for the American Astronomical Society membership. We suggest that membership of extremely large consortia such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey may partially explain the difference. We further suggest that many student ASA members with large h-index values have probably already received their Ph.D. and need to upgrade their ASA membership status. To attempt to specify the h-index distribution relative to opportunity, we also detail the percentiles of its distribution by years since Ph.D. award date. This shows a steady increase in h-index with seniority, as can be expected.

The wavefront from a celestial source is believed to arrive at the outer fringe of the Earth’s atmosphere as a truly plane wave of effectively infinite extent. After propagating through our refractively non-uniform atmosphere this wavefront becomes distorted in shape and exhibits a nonuniform amplitude distribution. At present there is little that can be done to remedy the effects of the atmosphere on wave propagation. However when the wave has been received by the entrance aperture of the observing telescope we should try to design this optical system, including its air-path sections, so as to minimize further distortion of the wavefront. ‘Seeing’ effects within an instrument which concern us in this paper are attributable to air of nonuniform temperature (and hence refractive index) in the sections between the optical components.

We numerically investigate dynamical and chemical properties of star clusters (open and globular clusters, and ‘super star clusters’, SSC) formed in interacting/merging galaxies. The investigation is two-fold: (a) large-scale (100 pc–100 kpc) SPH simulations on density and temperature evolution of gas in interacting/merging galaxies and (b) small-scale simulations on the effects of the high gas pressure of the ISM on the evolution of molecular clouds. We find that the pressure of ISM in merging galaxies can become higher than the internal pressure of GMCs (∼105kB K cm–3), in particular, in the tidal tails or the central regions of mergers. We also find that GMCs can collapse to form SSCs within an order of 107 yr due to the strong compression by the high-pressure ISM in mergers.

Results from carbon 14 analysis of Bristle cone pine wood, using samples bounded by decade groups of annual rings, has established a significant long term solar periodicity of just over 200 years. Sites with large quantities of buried sub-fossil Kauri, Huon pine and Celery pine logs, which can provide data for a record possibly exceeding 20 000 years, have been identified in New Zealand and Tasmania. An initial study into periodicities, of possible solar origin, embedded in these ring-index time series can be justified on the basis that there are few other sources of annual proxy data, extending beyond the last 2000 years, that may reflect solar variability. Results from spectral analysis of a sub-fossil floating Celery pine chronology, which extends over 426 years, are considered. Carbon dating indicates that the Taupo volcanic eruption, which buried this forest, occurred about AD 177.

The metal content of stars (and galaxies) is of great interest as it relates to the theories of element formation, and through these to the history of our galaxy, the frequency of supernovae, the star formation rate and even the quasar rate. The kinematics and metallicity of stars have been correlated in a theory of formation of the galaxy by Eggen et al. (1962). Alternate theories (Unsold 1969) have also been proposed. Much work has gone into isolating individual metal deficient stars and determining their abundances, and also the abundances for stars in clusters.

In an attempt to determine whether the lithium Une at 6707 Å cornes mainly from the quiet photosphere or from the cooler spots on spotted active stars we have measured Une équivalent widths due to Li and also due to Cal at 6717 Å at various rotation phases on three fast rotating stars, AB Doradus, PZ Telescopium and V 1005 Orionis. The results for AB Dor and PZ Tel show there might be some small rotational modulation which can be linked to the best estimate of the spot position from the available photometry. This moduation is less than that expected on the basis of Giampapa’s work on sunspot spectra. The Li and Cal line equivalent widths were found to anticorrelate.

We present improvement and confirmation of identified frequencies and pulsation modes for the γ Doradus star HD 189631. This work improves upon previous studies by incorporating a significant number of additional spectra and precise determination of frequencies. Four frequencies were identified for this star: 1.6774 ± 0.0002 d−1, 1.4174 ± 0.0002 d−1, 0.0714 ± 0.0002 d−1, and 1.8228 ± 0.0002 d−1 which were identified with the modes (l,m) = (1, +1), (1, +1), (2, −2), and (1, +1) respectively. These findings are in agreement with the most recent literature. The prevalence of (l,m) = (1, +1) modes in γ Doradus stars is starting to become apparent and we discuss this result.

Presolar graphite contains a 22Ne-rich component called Ne-E(L). Noble gas studies on graphite aggregates and single grains have shown that although a dominant source of the 22Ne is 22Na, 22Ne in the He-shell of asymptotic giant branch stars have also contributed to the Ne-E(L). In addition to novae that have been considered to be a possible source of 22Na, supernovae are a likely source as well. Krypton isotopic ratios of the separates indicate that part of graphite formed in low-mass (≤3 M⊙) asymptotic giant branch stars of low metallicity (Z ≤ 0.006).

We present a multi-frequency study of the intermediate spiral SAB(r)bc type galaxy NGC 6744, using available data from the Chandra X-Ray telescope, radio continuum data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array and Murchison Widefield Array, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer infrared observations. We identify 117 X-ray sources and 280 radio sources. Of these, we find nine sources in common between the X-ray and radio catalogues, one of which is a faint central black hole with a bolometric radio luminosity similar to the Milky Way’s central black hole. We classify 5 objects as supernova remnant (SNR) candidates, 2 objects as likely SNRs, 17 as H ii regions, 1 source as an AGN; the remaining 255 radio sources are categorised as background objects and one X-ray source is classified as a foreground star. We find the star-formation rate (SFR) of NGC 6744 to be in the range 2.8–4.7 M⊙~yr − 1 signifying the galaxy is still actively forming stars. The specific SFR of NGC 6744 is greater than that of late-type spirals such as the Milky Way, but considerably less that that of a typical starburst galaxy.
