High-resolution radio maps of supernova remnants (SNRs) are indispensable for distinguishing the more common shell remnants from the centrally concentrated (Crab-like) remnants; such studies also reveal any departures from symmetry, and this can yield vital information concerning interaction of the ejecta with the surrounding interstellar medium.

It has recently been shown that the planet Mercury exerts a small control on relative sunspot numbers, the degree of control depending on the positions of the other planets.

This paper describes the results of extending the work to include all the planets.

As a working hypothesis we have assumed that gravitational tidal forces induced on the Sun by the planets may modulate solar activity and have accordingly calculated relative equilibrium ‘high tide’ displacements of the solar surface for each day from the positions, masses and distances of the first six planets. Although the tides are very slight, the mass of displaced material is appreciable and varies over the very wide range of nearly 5 to 1.

The transfer of kinetic energy between cosmic rays and charged dust grains is investigated. The time required for heating of the dust grains due to Coulomb interactions is estimated and compared with the heating time due to ionisation losses by the cosmic rays. Heating of dust grains by cosmic rays is examined in connection with the FIR–radio correlation in galaxies: even for the most favorable conditions, including a high energy density in low-energy, ≲ 100 keV, cosmic rays, the conclusions are equivocal.

Described here is the new infrared camera/spectrograph, IRIS, that was brought into operation at the Anglo-Australian Telescope early in 1991. A number of scientific discoveries are used to demonstrate the capabilities of the instrument.

We examine the period variations of ten eclipsing binary stars and from the combined result, attempt to construct a physical explanation for their behaviour.

The discovery of pulsars in 1967 marked the watershed of interest in short-time-scale phenomena in radio astronomy. Ionospheric scintillation on time scales of seconds, interplanetary scintillations at tenths of seconds and solar bursts of similar duration had already been studied. But with pulsars individual pulses contained subpulses of width about 10 ms, and later observations of microstructure were to show that structure with scales of 10—100 μs were present. In other areas searches for the 10—100 ms radio pulses expected to accompany the gravitational wave events resulting from stellar collapses were made, and more recently searches have been made for the radio pulse accompanying the explosion of small black holes (Rees 1977). Work in this area is summarized by O’Sullivan et al. (1978) and Phinney and Taylor (1979).

We have mapped the southern galaxies NGC 613, 1313, 1433, 1566, 1672 and 2442 in the 12CO(J = 1 → 0) transition with the 15-m Swedish European Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The sample is based on galaxies previously observed in radio continuum with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). Strong emission is seen from the barred galaxies NGC 613 and NGC 2442 and from the active galaxies NGC 1566 and 1672. The weakest emission was from NGC 1433, while the Sd spiral NGC 1313 was not detected.

This paper discusses the observation of molecular hydrogen line emission outside near-infrared wavelengths, and in particular the opportunities afforded to molecular astrophysics by studies in the mid- and far-infrared.

We present observations made at 80 MHz with the Culgoora radioheliograph of the compact central components of the radio source Centaurus A, which is associated with the peculiar galaxy NGC 5128.

The atmosphere of a star presents a real challenge to the astronomer or physicist. We can observe but the thinnest skin of the star; yet from the information obtained therefrom we must deduce the star’s temperature, chemical composition, its rotation (if any), the state of agitation in its outer layers, and eventually the surface gravity, total luminosity, mass, and evolutionary stage.

During 1990 we surveyed the southern sky using a multi-beam receiver at frequencies of 4850 and 843 MHz. The half-power beamwidths were 4 and 25 arcmin respectively. The finished surveys cover the declination range between +10 and −90 degrees declination, essentially complete in right ascension, an area of 7.30 steradians. Preliminary analysis of the 4850 MHz data indicates that we will achieve a five sigma flux density limit of about 30 mJy. We estimate that we will find between 80 000 and 90 000 new sources above this limit. This is a revised version of the paper presented at the Regional Meeting by the first four authors; the surveys now have been completed.

Solar type III radio bursts often occur for prolonged periods (≳ 1 hour) with small time intervals (≲ 1 minute) between bursts. Such phenomena usually are confined to decametre wavelengths (frequency ≲ 100 MHz) and are called ‘type III storms’ (e.g. Stewart and Labrum 1972).

Local large scale structure is best studied using statistically complete samples which cover the entire sky, and for which full redshift information is available. The optical galaxy redshift surveys which have been made to date involve many thousands of objects but cover only limited parts of the sky, and so provide only a fragmented picture of local large scale structure. Complete samples of radio and X-ray galaxies are available, however, with large sky coverage. While the number of objects is small, they may still suffice to define the dominant local structures, particularly as they may preferentially sample the deeper gravitational potentials and so provide a more efficient tracer of dominant structure.

Radio and optical observations from December 2001 and January 2002 of the active RS CVn-like binary CC Eri are presented. The star was monitored at 4.80 and 8.64 GHz over 3 × 12 h allocations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array on 28 to 30 December 2001. The Anglo-Australian Telescope was used for simultaneous optical spectropolarimetry during a 0.5 h period on 30 December. Data from four nights of broadband photometry gathered around the same period are also included in this present multiwavelength study.

The low levels of radio emission were circularly polarised at ∼20% with slightly positive spectral indices of ∼0.26. Two flare-like increases were observed on successive nights with steep positive spectral indices and no detectable polarisation. Cross-correlation analysis of the 4.80 and 8.64 GHz intensities over the stronger flare showed that the higher frequency emission preceded that at the lower frequency by ∼5 min, a result consistent with the propagation of a hydromagnetic disturbance outwards through the corona. On the same night, a significant cross-correlation in the ‘quiescent’ emission indicates the presence of micro-flaring, although its low intensity does not permit the evaluation of a time delay. The emission parameters on the three nights are compatible with a gyrosyncrotron mechanism, in which the radio source becomes optically thick during strong flaring. We develop a simple model, which is based on assuming that the number of radiating electrons is a given function of the magnetic field in the source region, and derive feasible values for the field, source radius, and number of emitting electrons, which are not strongly dependent on the field modelling function or the aspect ratio of the source. Spectropolarimetry demonstrates the presence of a strong surface magnetic field. Optical photometry, covering a sufficient amount of the orbit, indicates a maculation region of significant size (∼14° radius).

The results help develop a three-dimensional picture of a large stellar magnetically active region and encourage more detailed follow-up multiwavelength studies of this and similar stars.

Since early 1974 the radioheliograph operated by the Division of Radiophysics at Culgoora, N.S.W. has been used in a 160 MHz study of ~2000 catalogued sources in the declination range -46° to +35°. In addition to measurements of flux densities and accurate positions at 160 MHz, brightness distributions are obtained for the sources that can be resolved by the 1’.9 × 1’.9 arc beams. A comparison of the brightness distributions at 160 MHz with those obtained from high-frequency measurements with similar angular resolution can yield valuable information about the energy distribution of the relativistic electrons, which are believed to be responsible for the radio emission from most nonthermal sources. Among the first objects to be examined were the strong southern radio galaxies Centaurus-A and Pictor-A.

Over the past several years, a system for accepting, servicing and returning the results from a large number of imaging requests has been developed for use with automated optical telescopes. One of the primary goals of this project is to increase the accessibility of astronomy to school, college and university students. A key component of this system is a request scheduling engine, which produces schedules for each telescope for its current night. This engine is dynamic, adjusting schedules to accommodate new requests and rescheduling failed requests on a time scale of the order of ten minutes. If a telescope is unavailable for an extended period, imaging requests will be reallocated to other telescopes in the network. Various models of dynamic scheduling are considered, and the current implementation is explored with a number of numerical experiments.

New angular diameter determinations for the bright southern F8 supergiant δ CMa enable the bolometric emergent flux and effective temperature of the star to be determined with improved accuracy. The spectral flux distribution and bolometric flux have been determined from published photometry and spectrophotometry and combined with the angular diameter to derive the bolometric emergent flux ℱ = (6.50 ± 0.24) × 107 Wm−2 and the effective temperature Teff = 5818 ± 53 K. The new value for the effective temperature is compared with previous interferometric and infrared flux method determinations. The accuracy of the effective temperature is now limited by the uncertainty in the bolometric flux rather than by the uncertainty in the angular diameter.

We summarise recent attempts to detect warm ionised gas at large galactocentric distances. This includes searches for gas at the edges of spirals, in between cluster galaxies, towards extragalactic HI clouds, and towards high-velocity clouds and the Magellanic Stream in the Galaxy. With the exception of extragalactic HI clouds, all of these experiments have proved successful. Within each class, we have only observed a handful of objects. It is premature to assess what fraction of the missing baryonic mass fraction might be in the form of ionised gas. But, in most cases, the detections provide a useful constraint on the ambient ionising flux, and, in the case of spiral edges, can even trace dark matter haloes out to radii beyond the reach of radio telescopes.

Next-generation spectro-polarimetric broadband surveys will probe cosmic magnetic fields in unprecedented detail, using the magneto-optical effect known as Faraday rotation. However, non-parametric methods such as RMCLEAN can introduce non-observable linearly polarised flux into a fitted model at negative wavelengths squared. This leads to Faraday rotation structures that are consistent with the observed data, but would be impossible or difficult to measure. We construct a convex non-parametric QU-fitting algorithm to constrain the flux at negative wavelengths squared to be zero. This allows the algorithm to recover structures that are limited in complexity to the observable region in wavelength squared. We verify this approach on simulated broadband data sets where we show that it has a lower root mean square error and that it can change the scientific conclusions for real observations. We advise using this prior in next-generation broadband surveys that aim to uncover complex Faraday depth structures.
