An examination is made of the relationship between the observed energy spectrum of cosmic rays and the averaged spectrum of the cosmic rays at their sources. These spectra differ greatly, due to propagation effects. A form of the source spectrum is deduced which is a rather featureless power law over the full range of observations from 1010 eV to 1020 eV. We suggest that this lack of features is indicative of a common source for all cosmic rays over the full energy range, as opposed to lower energy Galactic and higher energy intergalactic components such as is often suggested.

When metre wavelength radars were first operated in the 1940s, echoes were obtained which could be attributed to backscatter from ionised trains produced by the ablation of meteroids in the upper atmosphere at altitudes near 100 km. Modern over-the-horizon skywave radars operating in the HF (High Frequency) band employ digital techniques for both radar control and signal processing and are aided by frequency management subsystems for the selection of appropriate frequencies for meteor detection based on real-time monitoring of the HF signal environment.

This paper describes the results of using such a radar for meteor observations. We report the detection of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower and demonstrate that a large increase in the echo rate due to sporadic meteors is obtained as frequencies are reduced below 15 MHz and the underdense echo ceiling rises in altitude. Finally, we present preliminary observations of highly Doppler shifted echoes which travel at meteoric velocities and which we identify as meteor ‘head echoes’.

PKS 1318-43 was first identified with the elliptical galaxy NGC 5090 by Ekers (1969) in the Parkes catalogue. Schilizzi and McAdam (1975) mapped the source with 2.9 arcmin resolution at 408 MHz using the Mills Cross, resolving the source into an extended double structure approximately 15 arcmin in extent at p.a. 36°. Schilizzi (1975) also noted a possible optical link with an edge-on spiral (NGC 5091) ~75 arcsec to the south-east. Figure 1 shows a print of the two galaxies taken from the UK Schmidt J survey film. During 1980, in collaboration with K. J. Wellington, RMS mapped the source at 1415 MHz with the Fleurs Synthesis Telescope (FST, Christiansen 1973).

The 111–110 transition (frequency 4829.65 MHz) of formaldehyde (CH2O) has been recently observed in absorption against a number of continuum sources by Snyder et al. with the Green Bank 140-ft telescope.

Observations were made on 1970 February 9 using the Culgoora magnetograph to study the configuration and evolution of magnetic fields in a solar active region with high time resolution. The region observed was located at N20 E25 at the beginning of the observations which commenced at February 8, 22h 59m U.T. and finished at February 9, 07h 24 m. The magnetic fields were observed in the light of Cal 6102.7Å. Over a wavelength range corresponding to an intensity from 1/8 to 1/2 of the way up from line centre to the continuum on the blue side of the Une there is no apparent change in the field configuration, and the observations were made at a wavelength corresponding to the mid-point of this range. Exposures were made approximately every two minutes, with occasional large time gaps for instrumental adjustments.

Spectacular colour images have been made by combining CCD images in three different passbands using Adobe Photoshop. These beautiful images highlight a variety of astrophysical phenomena and should be a valuable resource for science education and public awareness of science. The wide field images were obtained at the Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) by mounting a Hasselblad or Nikkor telephoto lens in front of a 2K × 2K CCD. Options of more than 30 degrees or 6 degrees square coverage are produced in a single exposure in this way. Narrow band or broad band filters were placed between lens and CCD enabling deep, linear images in a variety of passbands to be obtained. We have mapped the LMC and SMC and are mapping the Galactic Plane for comparison with the Molonglo Radio Survey. Higher resolution images have also been made with the 40 inch telescope of galaxies and star forming regions in the Milky Way.

Although the radio continuum distribution of the HII-region/molecular-cloud complex W33 (peak l = 12°.8, b = -0°.2) resembles a discrete region about 15′ arc in size, the behaviour of the recombination-line velocities (Gardner et al. 1975; Bieging et al. 1978) and molecular-line velocities (OH: Robinson et al. 1970; H2CO: Gardner and Whiteoak 1972) has been difficult to interpret in terms of a simple model. There is a difference of opinion as to whether W33 consists of two independent complexes at different distances along the line of sight or a single expanding complex (e.g. Goss et al. 1978).

Preliminary results are presented arising from the use of the 40 inch telescope at Siding Spring Observatory for visual supernova hunting over a period of about 18 months. The use of the telescope in this way is continuing. These results are compared with the performance of my 41 em backyard telescope over the same 18-month period, and with recently announced results from the Perth Observatory's Automated Supernova Search using their 61 em telescope over a three-year period.

One of the important discoveries of the present century is that the Universe expands. Two important parameters which define the dynamics of the Universe and can be obtained at the telescope are the rate of expansion zhqо, and change of this rate with time qо, It is difficult to derive a value for Hо because accurate distances of farther galaxies are needed. This involves identifying the luminous objects, such as brightest stars, HII regions, globular cluster, supernova etc., in the Local Group galaxies as well as in the external galaxies. Once the absolute magnitudes of these objects are calibrated with the known distances of the Local Group galaxies, distances to the external galaxies can be derived.

3C75 consists of a pair of twin-jetted radio galaxies near the centre of the cluster Abell 400 which is a strong extended X-ray source. Fibre spectroscopy from the AAT, combined with number counts of the galaxies in Abell 400 give the gravitational potential of the cluster which is used to model the X-ray source. The inferred pressure of the X-ray gas suggests that the lobes of the radio source are probably confined. Evidence of excess X-ray emission near the centre of the cluster is also found.

We report on the results of a long time photometric monitoring of the two metal-poor Galactic globular clusters, M22 and IC4499, searching for long-period variables (LPVs) on the upper giant branch. We detected 22 new LPVs in the field of M22 and confirmed the variability of six known variables. Periods could be determined for 16 of them. In the field of IC4499 we detected and characterised two new LPVs. Cluster membership is evaluated for all the variables based on photometry and literature data, and the location of the stars in log P-K-diagram is discussed. Our findings give further support to the presence of LPVs at metallicities as low as [Fe/H] = −1.7. The luminosity range where LPVs are found in metal-poor clusters is lower than in more metal-rich clusters.

The nearest star α Centauri is a triple system. The star α Cen, one of the pointers to the Southern Cross, is itself a −0.3 mag visual binary consisting of a α Cen A, a G2V star popularly considered to resemble the Sun, and α Cen B, a KOV star. The orbital period is 80.089 years, the semimajor axis is 23.5 AU, the distance 1.34 pc, the masses are 1.11 and 0.92 (±0.03) M⊙ (Kamper & Wesselink 1977). The third star, Proxima Cen (V645 Cen) is a faint common proper-motion companion separated from α Cen AB by about 2°. It is known to most people only by virtue of being slightly closer to the Sun than is α Cen A, and therefore actually the closest star.. This 11th mag flare star is undoubtedly coeval with a α Cen AB, but being the least massive by a considerable margin, may have been ejected from the system shortly after formation.

The third UHURU catalogue of X-ray sources lists 64 sources at galactic latitudes higher than 20°, many of which have been identified with galaxies and clusters of galaxies. One of the best criteria for identifying a cluster of galaxies with an X-ray source is the extended nature of the X-ray source. Table I is a compilation of all clusters of galaxies known to be within the boundaries of X-ray error boxes. Not all have measured X-ray angular sizes (see column 3). Since the southern sky has been inspected too (Vidal 1975a), we believe that this list may represent a complete sample (down to the sensitivity of the UHURU satellite and the completeness of the Abell catalogue and the southern survey). Column 1 gives the optical identification, column 2 the 3U designation, column 3 the X-ray angular radius, column 4 the radio spectral index (see below), column 5 the redshift (corrected for galactic rotation) and column 6 the X-ray luminosities assuming the Hubble law. Numbers in parentheses give the references for the entries. When no such references are given, the data have been taken from Kellogg et al. (1973) and Bancall (1974).

The alignment of galaxies within clusters and superclusters may be sought either in the major axis of the observed optical distribution or in any radio or X-ray structure from an active nucleus.

We have studied several neutron star high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) with super-giant (SG) companions using a wind-fed binary model associated with the magnetic field. By using the concept of torque balance, the magnetic field parameter determines the mass accretion rate. This would help us to consider the relationship between wind velocity and mass-loss rate. These parameters significantly improve our understanding of the accretion mechanism. The wind velocity is critical in determining the X-ray features. This can be used to identify the ejection process and the stochastic variations in their accretion regimes. However, even in systems with a long orbital period, an accretion disk can be created when the wind velocity is slow. This will allow the HMXB of both types, SG and Be, to be better characterised by deriving accurate properties from these binaries. In addition, we have performed segmentation in the parameter space of donors intended for several SG-HMXB listed in our sample set. The parameter space can be categorised into five regimes, depending on the possibility of disk formation associated with accretion from the stellar wind. This can give a quantitative clarification of the observed variability and the properties of these objects. For most of the systems, we show that the derived system parameters are consistent with the assumption that the system is emitting X-rays through direct accretion. However, there are some sources (LMC X-4, Cen X-3 and OAO1657-415) that are not in the direct accretion regime, although they share similar donor parameters. This may indicate that these systems are transitioning from a normal wind accretion phase to partial RLOF regimes.

Interest to lateral details of the solar filament shape named barbs, motivated by their relationship to filament chirality and helicity, showed their different orientation relative to the expected direction of the magnetic field. While the majority of barbs are stretched along the field, some barbs seem to be transversal to it and are referred to as anomalous barbs. We analyse the deformation of helical field lines by a small parasitic polarity using a simple flux rope model with a force-free field. A rather small and distant source of parasitic polarity stretches the bottom parts of the helical lines in its direction creating a lateral extension of dips below the flux-rope axis. They can be considered as normal barbs of the filament. A stronger and closer source of parasitic polarity makes the flux-rope field lines to be convex below its axis and creates narrow and deep dips near its position. As a result, the narrow structure, with thin threads across it, is formed whose axis is nearly perpendicular to the field. The structure resembles an anomalous barb. Hence, the presence of anomalous barbs does not contradict the flux-rope structure of a filament.

We plan to digitise the AAO/UKST Hα survey of the Southern sky using the SuperCOSMOS facility at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. The digitisation will be performed at 10 microns resolution (0·67 arcsec), and will result in a database of 275 Gbyte of pixel data for the 200 fields of the survey. These data will be processed to produce also a point source catalogue. As the Hα survey is an official AAO sky survey, both the pixel data and the point source catalogue will be made available to the community as a service facility. We give details of the digitisation process, archiving of the resulting data and the plans for dissemination of the database.

Since 1992, 60 large Kuiper Belt objects have been detected by ground-based telescopes. Previous surveys which have detected objects have searched approximately 60□° and detected objects with magnitudes 20·6 < mR < 25·0. However, the luminosity function of brighter Kuiper Belt objects is not well determined. The detection of brighter objects would improve our ability to determine the Kuiper Belt objects' surface composition and provide constraints on the population statistics of different formation mechanisms. This paper describes a survey of 12·0□° of sky near the ecliptic to a limiting magnitude of mR ∼ 21. A slow moving candidate was detected near the magnitude limit of the survey.

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been observed as far as redshift $z \sim 7$. They are crucial in investigating the early Universe as well as the growth of supermassive black holes at their centres. Radio-loud AGN with their jets seen at a small viewing angle are called blazars and show relativistic boosting of their emission. Thus, their apparently brighter jets are easier to detect in the high-redshift Universe. DES J014132.4–542749.9 is a radio-luminous but X-ray weak blazar candidate at $z = 5$. We conducted high-resolution radio interferometric observations of this source with the Australian Long Baseline Array at $1.7$ and $8.5$ GHz. A single, compact radio-emitting feature was detected at both frequencies with a flat radio spectrum. We derived the milliarcsecond-level accurate position of the object. The frequency dependence of its brightness temperature is similar to that of blazar sources observed at lower redshifts. Based on our observations, we can confirm its blazar nature. We compared its radio properties with those of two other similarly X-ray-weak and radio-bright AGN, and found that they show very different relativistic boosting characteristics.

Galaxy-scale winds are poised to solve a number of ailments in modern cosmology. However, we know little about trends of wind properties with host galaxy properties. In an attempt to quantify the impact of galactic winds on their host galaxies and the environment, we are conducting a systematic survey of star-forming and active galaxies at z = 0–0.5. Preliminary results on the star-forming galaxies are presented.
