The ability to differentiate abiotic organic material from material of a biological origin is a critical task for astrobiology. Mass spectrometry and spectroscopy provide key tools for advancing this task and are two techniques that provide useful and highly complementary compositional information independent of a specific biochemical pathway. Here we address some of the utility and limitations of applying these techniques to both orbital and in situ exploration of icy moons of the outer solar system.

Anomalous momentum transport in a typical astrophysical return-current beam plasma system is studied by means of two-dimensional PIC code simulations. A forward going hot electron beam compensated by a cold return beam is considered. A linear dispersion analysis predicts the linerarly unstable wave modes. Our simulation reveals that the nonlinerly generated waves and the consequent wave-particle interactions cause the electron heating and the relaxation of the electron drifts. Both, the developments of electrostatic and electromagnetic waves are analyzed as well as the roles they play in energy conversion. In particular it is found that the relaxation of electron drifts is stronger if the electromagnetic turbulence is taken into account.

The Business Meeting of IAU Commission 16 was held at the General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro on August 13, 2009. The meeting was called to order at 9:15am by Commission President, Régis Courtin, with 12 members present. Commission 16 now has 312 members, up from 271 at the last General Assembly. It is now the third largest Commission in Division III, after Commission 15 and Commission 51.

Our recent studies of late B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity revealed for the first time the presence of fast dynamical evolution of chemical spots on their surfaces. These observations suggest a hitherto unknown physical process operating in the stars with radiative outer envelopes. Furthermore, we have also discovered existence of magnetic fields on these stars that have up to now been thought to be non-magnetic. Here we will discuss the dynamical spot evolution on HD 11753 and our new results on magnetic fields on AR Aur.

We report on modelling in stellar astrophysics with the ANTARES code. First, we describe properties of turbulence in solar granulation as seen in high-resolution calculations. Then, we turn to the first 2D model of pulsation-convection interaction in a cepheid. We discuss properties of the outer and the HeII ionization zone. Thirdly, we report on our work regarding models of semiconvection in the context of stellar physics.

Systems of two very different sizescales are known to produce very high-energy (VHE) radiation in their jets: AGNs and microquasars. The produced VHE photons (Eγ ~ 1 TeV) can be absorbed by the intense environmental soft photon fields, coming from the companion star (in high mass binaries) or from the accreting material (disk+corona in AGNs), as these are the dominant sources at energies around ~(mec2)2/Eγ. Energetic pairs are created by the photon-photon annihilation, and, depending on how efficient are the competing cooling channels, the absorption can lead to a reprocessing by Inverse Compton pair-cascade development. A self-consistent modeling of these systems as gamma-ray sources should then include, along with the emission and absorption processes, a thorough treatment of the pair cascades. We discuss here on this issue, focusing on our (preliminary) results of numerical simulations devoted to a study case similar to the high-mass microquasar candidate LS 5039.

Magnetic diffusion plays a vital role in star formation. We trace its influence from interstellar cloud scales down to star-disk scales. On both scales, we find that magnetic diffusion can be significantly enhanced by the buildup of strong gradients in magnetic field structure. Large scale nonlinear flows can create compressed cloud layers within which ambipolar diffusion occurs rapidly. However, in the flux-freezing limit that may be applicable to photoionized molecular cloud envelopes, supersonic motions can persist for long times if driven by an externally generated magnetic field that corresponds to a subcritical mass-to-flux ratio. In the case of protostellar accretion, rapid magnetic diffusion (through Ohmic dissipation with additional support from ambipolar diffusion) near the protostar causes dramatic magnetic flux loss. By doing so, it also allows the formation of a centrifugal disk, thereby avoiding the magnetic braking catastrophe.

Recent direct imaging discoveries of exoplanets have raised new questions about the formation of very low-mass objects in very wide orbits. Several explanations have been proposed, but all of them run into some difficulties, trying to explain all the properties of these objects at once. Here we present the results of a deep adaptive optics imaging survey of 85 stars in the Upper Scorpius young association with Gemini, reaching contrasts of up to 10 magnitudes. In addition to identifying numerous stellar binaries and a few triples, we also found several interesting sub-stellar companions. We discuss the implications of these discoveries, including the possibility of a second pathway to giant planet formation.

Massive main sequence stars are fast rotators. Stellar rotation affects massive stellar rotation due to rotationally induced mixing processes, the increase of mass loss rates, etc. and also affects the circumstellar medium due to their interaction with the stellar wind. The parameters of stellar winds depends on stellar parameters so the wind parameters change as the star evolves, coupling the evolution of circumstellar medium to the star itself. In this work we used a stellar code to build models of two massive stars (30 and 40 M⊙) and we used their wind parameters to simulate the hydrodynamics of their surrounding gas with the ZEUS-3D code in order to explore the effects of stellar rotation in the pre-supernova environments.

We present recent results comparing the CO and HI dynamics of nearby galaxies that have been observed as part of the THINGS (HI) and the HERACLES (CO) surveys. We focus on 3 galaxies out of the 11 that have been analysed so far, and present velocity-fields and rotation curves of the CO, which we compare with that of the HI.

Galileo's work had a profound influence on our understanding of the question of “other worlds” and the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe. When he saw the Moon with its mountains, and Jupiter with its moons, he implicitly recognized that these were physical places and thus could themselves be possible abodes for life. But some ancient and medieval scholars had already suggested as much, though without the empirical backing that Galileo's observations provided. Thus perhaps an even more important influence on the development of these ideas is that Galileo made them popular with the educated public, rather than merely the speculations of specialists. By inciting the popular imagination to take seriously the possibility of other worlds, he engaged subsequent generations of philosophers and storytellers to explore the possibilities and implications of life on those worlds.

We have for this General Assembly 25 new applications for C20 membership, which represents about 10% increase with respect to the total number of members. We are very satisfied with the increase rate of our commission membership, which reflects the high degree of activity in our field. Nevertheless we note that there are not many people involved in the commission business.

We use images derived from collapsing, turbulent molecular cloud simulations without sinks to explore the effects of finite image angular resolution and noise on the derived clump mass function. These effects randomly perturb the clump masses, producing a lognormal clump mass function with a Salpeter-like high mass end. We show that the characteristic break mass of the simulated clump mass functions changes with the angular resolution of the images in a way that is entirely consistent with the observations. We also present some cautionary tales regarding sink particles and highlight the need to ensure that sinks actually correspond to distinct collapsing objects. We test several popular numerical sink criteria in the literature and compare to converged, non-sink results.

A NLTE abundance analysis of the IUE spectra of 8 Be stars with v sin i < 150km s−1 reveals no evidence for nitrogen enrichment from mixing of core and photospheric material.

V889 Herculis is one of the brightest single early-G type stars, a young Sun, that is rotating fast enough (Prot =1.337 days) for mapping its surface by Doppler Imaging. The 10 FOCES spectra collected between 13-16 Aug 2006 at Calar Alto Observatory allowed us to reconstruct one single Doppler image for two mapping lines. The Fe i-6411 and Ca i-6439 maps, in a good agreement, revealed an asymmetric polar cap and several weaker features at lower latitudes. Applying the sheared-image method with our Doppler reconstruction we perform an investigation to detect surface differential rotation (DR). The resulting DR parameter, δΩ/Ω≈0.009 of solar type, is compared to previous studies which reported either much stronger shear or comparably weak DR, or just preferred rigid rotation. Theoretical aspects are also considered and discussed.

It is shown that the magnetic current-driven (‘kink-type’) instability produces flow and field patterns with helicity and even with α-effect but only if the magnetic background field possesses non-vanishing current helicity B⋅ curl B by itself. Fields with positive large-scale current helicity lead to negative small-scale kinetic helicity. The resulting α-effect is positive. These results are very strict for cylindric setups without z-dependence of the background fields. The sign rules also hold for the more complicated cases in spheres where the toroidal fields are the result of the action of differential rotation (induced from fossil poloidal fields) at least for the case that the global rotation is switched off after the onset of the instability.

I briefly review here a few past or on-going surveys of nearby ETGs via integral-field spectroscopy, focusing on their dynamical status, evolution, and stellar/gaseous content.

Brown dwarfs are intermediate objects between planets and stars. The lower end of the brown-dwarf mass range overlaps with the one of massive planets and therefore the distinction between planets and brown-dwarf companions may require to trace the individual formation process. We present results on new potential brown-dwarf companions of Sun-like stars, which were discovered using CORALIE radial-velocity measurements. By combining the spectroscopic orbits and Hipparcos astrometric measurements, we have determined the orbit inclinations and therefore the companion masses for many of these systems. This has revealed a mass range between 25 and 45 Jupiter masses almost void of objects, suggesting a possible dividing line between massive planets and sub-stellar companions.

Supersonic magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in molecular clouds (MCs) plays an important role in the process of star formation. The effect of the turbulence on the cloud fragmentation process depends on the magnetic field strength. In this work we discuss the idea that the turbulence is super-Alfvénic, at least with respect to the cloud mean magnetic field. We argue that MCs are likely to be born super-Alfvénic. We then support this scenario based on a recent simulation of the large-scale warm interstellar medium turbulence. Using small-scale isothermal MHD turbulence simulation, we also show that MCs may remain super-Alfvénic even with respect to their rms magnetic field strength, amplified by the turbulence. Finally, we briefly discuss the comparison with the observations, suggesting that super-Alfvénic turbulence successfully reproduces the Zeeman measurements of the magnetic field strength in dense MC clouds.

We present an extended scheme for the calculation of the profiles of emission lines from accretion disks around rotating black holes. The scheme includes disks with angular momenta which are parallel and antiparallel with respect to the black hole's angular momentum, as both configurations are assumed to be stable (King et al. 2005). Based on a Green's function approach, an arbitrary radius dependence of the disk emissivity and arbitrary limb darkening laws can be easily taken into account, while the amount of precomputed data is significantly reduced with respect to other available models. We discuss line shapes for such disks and present a code for modelling observational data with this scheme in X-ray data analysis programs. A detailed discussion will soon be presented in a forthcoming paper (Dauser et al. 2010).
