Firstly, we give a historical overview of attempts to incorporate magnetic fields into the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method by solving the equations of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), leading an honest assessment of the current state-of-the-art in terms of the limitations to performing realistic calculations of the star formation process. Secondly, we discuss the results of a recent comparison we have performed on simulations of driven, supersonic turbulence with SPH and Eulerian techniques. Finally we present some new results on the relationship between the density variance and the Mach number in supersonic turbulent flows, finding σ2ln ρ = ln(1 + b22 with b = 0.33 up to Mach 20, consistent with other numerical results at lower Mach number (Lemaster & Stone 2008) but inconsistent with observational constraints on σρ and in Taurus and IC5146.

A 10-metre class telescope project on African soil is ending its commissioning period and is transitioning to science mode. We present the current status of the Southern African Large Telescope and its instruments. We will also briefly discuss the SALT capabilities for extragalactic astronomy in particular.

For early type magnetic stars slow, at most moderate rotational velocities have been considered an observational fact. The detection of a multi-kilogauss magnetic field in the B2Vpn star with P ≈ 0.52 d and v sin i ≈ 300 km/s has brought down this narrative. We have obtained more than 100 high-resolution, high-S/N echelle spectra in 2009. These spectra provide the most detailed description of the variability of any He-strong star to date. The circumstellar environment is dominated by a rotationally locked magnetosphere out to several stellar radii, causing hydrogen emission. The photosphere is characterized by surface chemical abundance inhomogeneities, with much stronger amplitudes, at least for helium, than slower rotating stars like σ Ori E. The highly complex rotational line profile modulations of metal lines are probably a consequence the equatorial gravity darkening of HR 7355, and thus may offer an independent measurement of the von Zeipel parameter β.

Magnetic reconnection is an important process that is prevalent in a wide range of astrophysical bodies. It is the mechanism that permits magnetic fields to relax to a lower energy state through the global restructuring of the magnetic field and is thus associated with a range of dynamic phenomena such as solar flares and CMEs. The characteristics of three-dimensional reconnection are reviewed revealing how much more diverse it is than reconnection in two dimensions. For instance, three-dimensional reconnection can occur both in the vicinity of null points, as well as in the absence of them. It occurs continuously and continually throughout a diffusion volume, as opposed to at a single point, as it does in two dimensions. This means that in three-dimensions field lines do not reconnect in pairs of lines making the visualisation and interpretation of three-dimensional reconnection difficult.

By considering particular numerical 3D magnetohydrodynamic models of reconnection, we consider how magnetic reconnection can lead to complex magnetic topologies and current sheet formation. Indeed, it has been found that even simple interactions, such as the emergence of a flux tube, can naturally give rise to ‘turbulent-like’ reconnection regions.

After having observed the planets from his house in Padova using his telescope, in January 1611 Galileo wrote to Giuliano de Medici that Venus is moving around the Sun as Mercury. Forty years ago, Giuseppe Colombo, professor of Celestial Mechanics in Padova, made a decisive step to clarify the rotational period of Mercury. Today, scientists and engineers of the Astronomical Observatory of Padova and of the University of Padova, reunited in the Center for Space Studies and Activities (CISAS) named after Giuseppe Colombo, are busy to realize a stereo camera (STC) that will be on board the European (ESA) and Japanese (JAXA) space mission BepiColombo, devoted to the observation and exploration of the innermost planet. This paper will describe the stereo camera, which is one of the channels of the SIMBIOSYS instrument, aiming to produce the global mapping of the surface with 3D images.

We study the magnetic helicity properties of a set of peculiar active regions (ARs) including δ-islands and other high-tilt bipolar configurations. These ARs are usually identified as the most active in terms of flare and CME production. Due to their observed structure, they have been associated with the emergence of magnetic flux tubes that develop a kink instability. Our main goal is to determine the chirality of the twist and writhe components of the AR magnetic helicity in order to set constrains on the possible mechanisms producing the flux tube deformations. We determine the magnetic twist comparing observations of the AR coronal structure with force-free models of the magnetic field. We infer the flux-tube writhe from the rotation of the main magnetic bipole during the observed evolution. From the relation between the obtained twist and writhe signs we conclude that the development of the kink instability cannot be the single mechanism producing deformed flux-tubes.

Spectral features corresponding to methane and water opacity were reported based on transmission spectroscopy of HD 189733b with Hubble/NICMOS. Recently, these data, and a similar data set for XO-1b, have been reexamined in Gibson et al. (2010), who claim they cannot reliably reproduce prior results. We examine the methods used by the Gibson team and identify two specific issues that could act to increase the formal uncertainties and to create instability in the minimization process. This would also be consistent with the GPA10 finding that they could not identify a way to select among the several instrument models they constructed. In the case of XO-1b, the Gibson team significantly changed the way in which the instrument model is defined (both with respect to the three approaches they used for HD 189733b, and the approach used by previous authors); this change, which omits the effect of the spectrum position on the detector, makes direct intercomparison of results difficult. In the experience of our group, the position of the spectrum on the detector is an important element of the instrument model because of the significant residual structure in the NICMOS spectral flat field. The approach of changing instrument models significantly complicates understanding the data reduction process and interpreting the results. Our team favors establishing a consistent method of handling NICMOS instrument systematic errors and applying it uniformly to data sets.

The interaction of plasma waves plays a crucial role in the dynamics of weakly turbulent plasmas. So far the interaction of non-dispersive waves has been studied. In this paper the theory is extended to dispersive waves. It is well known that dispersive waves may be found in the solar corona, where they contribute to the heating of the corona. Here the possible interactions in the solar corona are described and the interaction rates are derived in the framework of Hall MHD.

The meeting was attended by 5 members of the WG (E. Bowell, G. Consolmagno, R. Courtain, R. Lopez, R. Schulz) one Task Group member (J. Watanabe), and several guests from the CSBN and CBAT. It was decided at the beginning of the meeting that the attending members of the WGPSN would discuss matters, provide their opinion or vote, and then ask the other 8 formal members to do the same via email. As a consequence the following discussed items have been agreed by majority vote of the WG members.

The question of the collimation of relativistic jets is the subject of a lively debate in the community. We numerically compute the apparent velocity and the Doppler factor of a non homokinetic jet using different velocity profile, to study the effect of collimation on the appearance of relativistic jets (apparent velocity and Doppler factor). We argue that if the motion is relativistic, the high superluminal velocity are possible only if the geometrical collimation is smaller than the relativistic beaming angle γ−1. In the opposite case, the apparent image will be dominated by the part of the jet traveling directly towards the observer resulting in no apparent velocity. Furthermore, getting rid of the homokinetic hypothesis yields a complex relation between the observing angle and the Doppler factor, resulting in important consequences for the numerical computation of AGN population and unification scheme model.

We present long-term numerical simulations of powerful extragalactic relativistic jets in two dimensions. The jets are injected in a realistic atmosphere with powers 1044, 1045 and 1046 erg/s, during tens of Myrs. After this time, the jet injection is switched off. We follow the evolution of the jets and associated shocks from 1 kpc to hundreds of kiloparsecs during more than 100 Myrs. The 1045 erg/s jet was simulated with leptonic and baryonic composition. Our results show that, for powerful jets, the main heating mechanisms are the driving shock-wave and mixing. We discuss the implications that these results have in the frame of cooling flows in clusters.

The effect of the Plume/Interplume Lane (PIPL) structure of the solar North Polar Coronal Hole (NPCH) on the ion-cyclotron resonance (ICR) process is investigated. The ICR process in the interplume lanes is much more effective than in the plumes, agreeing with the observations which show the source of fast solar wind is interplume lanes.

There have recently been a flood of ground-based detections of the near-infrared thermal emission of a number of hot Jupiters. Although these near-infrared detections have revealed a great deal about the atmospheric characteristics of individual hot Jupiters, the question is: what information does this ensemble of near-infrared detections reveal about the atmospheric dynamics and reradiation of all hot Jupiters? I explore whether there is any correlation between how brightly these planets shine in the near-infrared compared to their incident stellar flux, as was theoretically predicted to be the case. Secondly, I look for whether there is any correlation between the host star's activity and the planet's near-infrared emission, like there is in the mid-infrared, where Spitzer observations have revealed a correlation between the host star activity with the presence, or lack thereof, of a temperature inversion and a hot stratosphere.

With SpIOMM, we obtained numerous spectra in the visible range covering simultaneously several emission lines of bright Hii regions in the spiral galaxies NGC 628 and M101. We measured the size and luminosity of the Hii regions as well as the gas metallicity, temperature, and density. We estimated the age and star forming rate of the young stellar populations associated with the Hii regions. We looked for gradients along the galaxy radius and search for relations with the galactic arm positions. This is a first step in a project, based on a detailed study of stellar populations, to rebuild the history of spiral galaxies and to identify the mechanisms responsible for their evolution.

Ca II H imaging observations by the Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) have revealed that the chromosphere is extremely dynamic and that ejections and jets are well observed in moat region around sunspots. X-ray and EUV observations show frequent occurrence of microflaring activities around sunspots; small emerging flux or moving magnetic features approaching opposite pre-existing magnetic flux can be identified on the footpoints for half of microflares studied, while no encounters of opposite polarities are observed at footpoints for the others even with SOT high spatial magnetorams (Kano et al. 2010). Another observations tell the involvement of twisted magnetic fields in the microflares accompanied by no polarity encounters at the footpoints. Some type of sunspot light bridges shows recurrent occurrence of chromospheric ejections, and photospheric vector magnetic field data suggests that twsited magnetic flux tubes lying along light bridge play vital roles in producing such ejections (Shimizu et al. 2009). This presentation reviewed observational findings from these studies. We will need to understand the 3D configuration of magnetic fields for better understanding of activity triggers in the solar atmosphere.

The mutual phenomena between Jupiter and Saturn's satellites occur every half orbital period of these planets, when the Earth and the Sun cross their equatorial plane. At Physics and Astronomy Department of Catania University the events between Jupiter's satellites have been observed during the 1973, 1979, 1985/86, 1991, 1997 and 2009 campaigns and the ones between Saturn's satellites during the 1980/81 and 1995 campaigns. An overview of the main results obtained since 1973 is presented.

We provide a brief overview of recent advances and outstanding issues in simulations of interstellar turbulence, including isothermal models for interior structure of molecular clouds and larger-scale multiphase models designed to simulate the formation of molecular clouds. We show how self-organization in highly compressible magnetized turbulence in the multiphase ISM can be exploited in simple numerical models to generate realistic initial conditions for star formation.

During the General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro the Division IV meeting, and the meetings of the participating working groups and commissions, were held on thursday 6th (session 1 and 2) and friday 7th (sessions 1, 2, 3, 4).

This review describes the observational evidence for structure in the winds of O-type stars due to large-scale perturbations and small-scale inhomogeneities. Despite considerable progress, a comprehensive theoretical framework that explains the origin. properties, and coexistence of wind structure on different spatial scales has yet to be constructed and incorporated into model atmosphere analyses. Consequently, it is not yet possible to assess the effect of non-stationary structures on different wind diagnostics in a rigorous way, with the result that accurate empirical determinations of mass-loss rates remain elusive.

Following earlier work by Hughes & Proctor (2009) on the role of velocity shear in convectively driven dynamos, we present preliminary results on the nature of dynamo action due to modified flows derived by filtration from the full convective flow. The results suggest that filtering the flow fields has surprisingly little effect on the dynamo growth rates.
