Division V deals with all aspects of stellar variability, either intrinsic or due to eclipses by its companion in a binary system. In the case of intrinsic stellar variability the analysis of pulsating stars, surface inhomogeneities, stellar activity and oscillations are considered. For close binaries, classical detached eclipsing binaries are studied as well as more interacting systems, like contact and semi-detached binaries, or those with compact components, like cataclysmic variables and X-ray binaries, including the physics of accretion processes.

Presented here are the preliminary results of a long-term study of S-stars on the AGB. S-stars are important as possible transition objects between oxygen-rich M-stars and carbon stars. The aim of the study is to compare results from our newly gathered observational database for the S-stars with those already obtained for the M- and carbon stars. We can thus follow the changes as the stars evolve along the AGB and more firmly establish the suggested M-MS-S-SC-C evolutionary sequence. It will also allow us to determine the relative importance of processes such as non-equilibrium chemistry, grain formation, and photodissociation in regulating the chemistry in circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars.

Multi-wavelength studies of solar analogs (G0–5 V stars) with ages from ~50 Myr to 9 Gyr have been carried out as part of the “Sun in Time” program for nearly 20 yrs. From these studies it is inferred that the young (ZAMS) Sun was rotating more than 10× faster than today. As a consequence, young solar-type stars and the early Sun have vigorous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) dynamos and correspondingly strong coronal X-ray and transition region/chromospheric FUV–UV emissions (up to several hundred times stronger than the present Sun). Also, rotational modulated, low amplitude light variations of young solar analogs indicate the presence of large starspot regions covering ~5–30% of their surfaces. To ensure continuity and homogeneity for this program, we use a restricted sample of G0–5 V stars with masses, radii, Teff, and internal structure (i.e. outer convective zones) closely matching those of the Sun. From these analogs we have determined reliable rotation-age-activity relations and X-ray–UV (XUV) spectral irradiances for the Sun (or any solar-type star) over time. These XUV irradiance measures serve as input data for investigating the photo-ionization and photo-chemical effects of the young, active Sun on the paleo-planetary atmospheres and environments of solar system planets. These measures are also important to study the effects of these high energy emissions on the numerous exoplanets hosted by solar-type stars of different ages. Recently we have extended the study to include lower mass, main-sequence (dwarf) dK and dM stars to determine relationships among their rotation spin-down rates and coronal and chromospheric emissions as a function of mass and age. From rotation-age-activity relations we can determine reliable ages for main-sequence G, K, M field stars and, subsequently, their hosted planets. Also inferred are the present and the past XUV irradiance and plasma flux exposures that these planets have endured and the suitability of the hosted planets to develop and sustain life.

We present flux-calibrated integrated spectra in the optical spectral range of concentrated star clusters in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC-SMC), approximately half of which constitute unstudied objects. We have mainly estimated ages and foreground interstellar reddening values from the comparison of the line strengths and continuum distribution of the cluster spectra with those of template spectra with known parameters. Also reddening values were estimated by interpolation between the extinction maps of Burstein & Heiles (1982) (BH). A good agreement between ages and reddenings derived through the different procedures was found. The ages of the 27 LMC star clusters range from 5 to 125 Myr, while those of the 13 SMC vary from 4 to 350 Myr.

We are carrying out a deep survey for transiting extrasolar planets in a 1 square degree field in the Galactic Plane. The images to date were taken using the Wide Field Imager on the ESO 2.2m telescope at La Silla. We present details of the analysis and initial results from the survey.

Galactic disks consist of both stars and gas. The stars gravitationally influence the gas either in disks at large or within spiral arms, leading to the formation of giant clouds and turbulence driving in the gas. In featureless disks as in flocculent galaxies, swing amplification operating in a combined star-gas disk is efficient to form bound condensations and feed a significant level of random gas motions. This occurs when the gaseous Toomre parameter is less than 1.4 for the stellar parameters similar to the solar neighbourhood conditions. In disks with spiral features, on the other hand, spiral-arm spurs and associated giant clouds develop as a consequence of magneto-Jeans instability in which magnetic tension counterbalances the stabilizing Coriolis force. Spiral shocks are inherently unstable when the vertical dimension is taken into account, exhibiting flapping motions of the shock front. This naturally converts the kinetic energy in galaxy rotation into random kinetic energy of the gas. The resulting turbulent motions are supersonic and persist despite strong shock dissipation. Thermal instability occurring in gas flows across spiral arms prompts phases transitions that produce a significant fraction of thermally-unstable, intermediate-temperature gas in the postshock expansion zones.

We study a sample of complex events; each includes a coronal type II burst, accompanied by a GOES SXR flare and LASCO CME. The radio bursts were recorded by the ARTEMIS-IV radio spectrograph (100-650 MHz range); the GOES SXR flares and SOHO/LASCO CMEs, were obtained from the Solar Geophysical Data (SGD) and the LASCO lists respectively. The radio burst-flare-CME characteristics were compared and two groups of events with similar behavior were isolated. In the first the type II shock exciter appears to be a flare blast wave propagating in the wake of a CME. In the second the type II burst appears CME initiated though it is not always clear if it is driven by the bow or the flanks of the CME or if it is a reconnection shock.

I present an introduction to three important subjects relevant to low metallicity star formation: the IMF, stellar evolution, and star formation histories. I will draw on observations from the LCID (Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs) project to illustrate some of these topics.

We study the impact on the stellar structure of a large-scale magnetic field in stellar radiation zones. The field is in magneto-hydrostatic (MHS) equilibrium and has a non force-free character, which allows us to study its influence both on the mechanical and and on the energetic balances. This approach is illustrated in the case of an Ap star where the magnetic field matches at the surface with an external potential one. Perturbations of the stellar structure are semi-analytically computed. The relative importance of the magnetic physical quantities is discussed and a hierarchy, aiming at distinguishing various refinement degrees in the implementation of a large-scale magnetic field in a stellar evolution code, is established. This treatment also allows us to deduce the gravitational multipolar moments and the change in effective temperature associated with the presence of a magnetic field.

Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to help determining the internal structure of the stars. Solar-like oscillations have been discovered in the G9.5 red giant ϵ Ophiuchi, and it opened up a new part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram to be explored with asteroseismic techniques. We present the detailed study of the properties of ϵ Oph including convective overshooting and extra-mixing.

The theory of plasma emission and of electron cyclotron maser emission, and their applications to solar radio bursts and to Jupiter's decametric radioation (DAM) and the Earth's auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) are reviewed, emphasizing the early literature and problems that remain unresolved. It is pointed out that there are quantitative measures of coherence in radio astronomy that have yet to be explored either observationally or theoretically.

Massive stars played a key role in the early evolution of the Universe. They formed with the first halos and started the re-ionisation. It is therefore very important to understand their evolution. In this paper, we describe the strong impact of rotation induced mixing and mass loss at very low metallicity (Z). The strong mixing leads to a significant production of primary 14N, 13C and 22Ne. Mass loss during the red supergiant stage allows the production of Wolf-Rayet stars, type Ib,c supernovae and possibly gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) down to almost Z = 0 for stars more massive than 60 M⊙. Galactic chemical evolution models calculated with models of rotating stars better reproduce the early evolution of N/O, C/O and 12C/13C. We calculated the weak s-process production induced by the primary 22Ne and obtain overproduction factors (relative to the initial composition, Z = 10−6) between 100-1000 in the mass range 60–90 M⊙.

We discuss the occurence and consequences of thermohaline mixing in RGB stars, as well as the possible inhibition of this process by a fossil magnetic field in Ap star descendants.

We present the first results of a long-term project based on the analysis of high-resolution optical spectra for a sample of Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters. The final aim is to build a new, reliable metallicity scale for this cluster system and shed some light on the role played by the different chemical contributors (AGB, SN II and SN Ia), in order to understand the chemical enrichment history of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The analysis of 6 young and intermediate-age clusters and 11 field stars, observed with the UVES@FLAMES spectrograph, provides crucial information about the chemical composition of the dominant stellar population of the LMC. All these stars are metal-rich ([Fe/H]~ −0.4 dex), with solar-scaled [α/Fe] ratios, that point toward an enrichment from SN Ia. Moreover, we observed a general depletion for the [Al/Fe] ratio (indication of a chemical enrichment by metal-poor SN II) and a strong enhancement of the [Ba/Y] ratio (likely due to the enrichment by metal-poor AGB stars).

The historical directions of spiral arm tangencies in the Milky Way are presented and compared to results of mid-infrared star counts using the Spitzer Space Telescope. While the Scutum and Centaurus tangency directions show a 20-30% excess of star counts, all other expected tangency directions show no similar increases. These two tangencies are probably associated with a density wave arm that comes off the near side of the bar of the Galaxy while the other arms whose tangencies are not detected may be compression in the gas, but not in the old stellar disk.

Owing to their small masses and radii, Ultracool Dwarfs (UCDs; late-M, L, and T dwarfs) may be excellent targets for planet searches and may afford astronomers the opportunity to detect terrestrial planets in the habitable zone. The precise measurements necessary to detect extrasolar planets orbiting UCDs represent a major challenge. We describe two efforts to obtain precise measurements of UCDs in the Near Infrared (NIR). The first involves the robotic NIR observatory PAIRITEL and efforts to obtain photometric precision sufficient for the detection of terrestrial planets transiting UCDs. The second effort involves precise radial velocity measurements of UCDs in the NIR and a survey undertaken with the NIRSPEC spectrograph on Keck.

The Gaia space project, planned for launch in 2011, is one of the ESA cornerstone missions, and will provide astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic data of very high quality for about one billion stars brighter than V = 20. This will allow to reach an unprecedented level of information and knowledge on several of the most fundamental astrophysical issues, such as mapping of the Milky Way, stellar physics (classification and parameterization), Galactic kinematics and dynamics, study of the resolved stellar populations in the Local Group, distance scale and age of the Universe, dark matter distribution (potential tracers), reference frame (quasars, astrometry), planet detection, fundamental physics, Solar physics, Solar system science.

I will present a description of the instrument and its main characteristics, and discuss a few specific science cases where Gaia data promise to contribute fundamental improvement within the scope of this Symposium.

The Organizing Committee of Commission 27 has decided to again provide a somewhat abbreviated bibliography as part of this triennial report, as astronomy-centered search engines and on-line publications continue to blossom. We focus on selected highlights in variable star research over the past three years. Further results can be found in numerous proceedings of conferences held in the time frame covered by this report.

We report a spectral line survey of the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars at millimeter wavelengths. The data allow us to investigate the chemical processes in different physical environments and evolutionary stages. A total of more than 500 emission features (mostly rotational transitions of molecules) are detected in the survey. Our observations show that the sources in different evolutionary stages have remarkably different chemical composition. As a star evolves from AGB stage to proto-planetary nebula, the abundances of Si-bearing molecules (SiO, SiCC, and SiS) decrease, while the abundances of some long-chain molecules, such as CH3CN, C4H, and HC3N, increase. After further evolution to planetary nebula, the abundances of neutral molecules dramatically decrease, and the emission from molecular ions becomes more intense. These differences can be attributed to the changes of the role that dust, stellar winds, shock waves, and UV/X-rays from the central star play in different evolutionary stages. These results will provide significant constraints on models of circumstellar chemistry.

In this contribution we present an observational study of the interaction of the photosphere with different chromospheric layers. We study the correlations between emissions at varying temperature from the temperature minimum region (UV continuum at 1600 Å from TRACE) through the low chromosphere (CaII K-line from BBSO) to the middle chromosphere (continuum at 3.5 mm from BIMA) and photospheric magnetic field from MDI/SOHO. For the first time millimeter observational data are included in such analysis.

We report a high degree of correlation between considered emissions formed at different heights in the chromosphere. A power law is found to be a good representation for the relationship between photospheric magnetic field and chromospheric emissions at all considered wavelengths. Our analysis shows that the dependence of chromospheric intensities on magnetic field is different for the network and internetwork regions. In the network a power law provides the best fit with the exponent being close to 0.5–0.6, while almost no dependence of chromospheric intensity on magnetic flux is found for the cell interiors. The obtained results support the idea of different heating mechanisms acting in the network (magnetic) and cell interiors (acoustic).
