Spectro-polarimetric observations in several spectral lines allow to determine the height variation of the magnetic field of a small sunspot throughout the solar photosphere. The full Stokes-vector is measured with high spatial resolution. From these data we derive the magnetic field vector. The magnetic field strength decreases with height everywhere in the spot, even in the outer penumbra where some other authors have reported the opposite. The precise value of this decrease depends on the exact position in the spot. Values vary between 0.5 and 2.2 G km−1 when they are determined from an iron and a silicon line in the near infrared. The magnetic field is less inclined in the higher layers where the silicon line is formed. Once the magnetic vector field is known, it is straight forward to determine current densities and helicities. Current densities exhibit a radial structure in the penumbra, although it is still difficult to correlate this with the structure seen in the intensity continuum. In spite of this, current densities have a potential to serve as diagnostic tools to understand the penumbra, at least with the spatial resolution of the upcoming telescopes. The mean infered helicity is negative, as expected for a spot in the northern hemisphere. Nevertheless, there are locations inside the spot with positive helicity.

Magnetic field is an essential dynamical process in stellar radiation zones. Moreover, it has been suggested that a dynamo action, sustained by a MHD instability which affects the toroidal axisymmetric magnetic field, could lead to a strong transport of angular momentum and of chemicals in such regions. Here, we recall the different magnetic transport and mixing processes in radiative regions. Next, we show that the dynamo cannot operate as described by Spruit (2002) and recall the condition required to close the dynamo loop. We perform high-resolution 3D simulations with the ASH code, where we observe indeed the MHD instability, but where we do not detect any dynamo action, contrary to J. Braithwaite (2006). We conclude on the picture we get for magnetic transport mechanisms in radiation zones and the associated consequences for stellar evolution.

Star clusters are valuable tools for theoretical and observational astronomy across a wide range of disciplines from cosmology to stellar spectroscopy. For example, properties of globular clusters are used to constrain stellar evolutionary models, nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution, as well as the star formation and assembly histories of galaxies and the distribution of dark matter in present-day galaxies. Open clusters are widely used as stellar laboratories for the study of specific stellar phenomena (e.g., various emission-line stars, pulsating pre-MS stars, magnetic massive stars, binarity, stellar rotation, etc.). They also provide observational constraints on models of massive star evolution and of Galactic disk formation and chemical evolution.

Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are thought to be formed in the low-mass protogalaxies as building blocks of the Milky Way and can be probes to investigate the early stage of galaxy formation and star formation in the early universe. We study the formation history of EMP stars in the Milky Way halo using a new model of chemical evolution based on the hierarchical theory of the galaxy formation. We construct the merging history of the Milky Way halo based on the extended Press-Schechter formalism, and follow the star formation and chemical evolution along the merger tree. The abundance trends and number of low-mass stars predicted in our model are compared with those of observed EMP stars. Additionally, in order to clarify the origin of hyper metal poor stars, we investigate the change of the surface metal abundances of stars by accretion of interstellar matter. We also investigate the pre-enrichment of intergalactic matter by the first supernovae.

We review the final stages of stellar evolution, supernova properties, and chemical yields as a function of the progenitor's mass. (1) 8 - 10 M⊙ stars are super-AGB stars when the O+Ne+Mg core collapses due to electron capture. These AGB-supernovae may constitute an SN 2008S-like sub-class of Type IIn supernovae. These stars produce little α-elements and Fe-peak elements, but are important sources of Zn and light p-nuclei. (2) 10 - 90 M⊙ stars undergo Fe-core collapse. Nucleosynthesis in aspherical explosions is important, as it can well reproduce the abundance patterns observed in extremely metal-poor stars. (3) 90 - 140 M⊙ stars undergo pulsational nuclear instabilities at various nuclear burning stages, including O and Si-burning. (4) Very massive stars with M ≳ 140 M⊙ either become pair-instability SNe, or undergo core-collapse to form intermediate mass black holes if the mass loss is small enough.

The Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA) is a microlensing survey conducted at Mt. John Observatory in New Zealand. We searched transiting planet candidates from the MOA-I Galactic bulge data, which have been obtained with a 61cm B&C telescope from 2000 to 2005 for a microlensing search. Although this survey data were dedicated to microlensing, they are also quite useful for searching transiting objects because of the large number of stars monitored (~7 million) and the long span of the survey (~6 years). From our analysis, we found 58 transiting planet candidates. We are planning to follow up these candidates with high-precision spectroscopic and photometric observations for further selection, toward the detection of planets by radial velocity observations.

The Spitzer Space Telescope has discovered several objects with unusual spectra, where the emission features from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are shifted to longer wavelengths than normally observed. Previously, only two of these class C PAH spectra had been identified. The new and larger sample reveals that PAHs emit at longer wavelengths when processed by cooler radiation fields. Limited laboratory data show that samples with mixtures of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons produce emission features at longer wavelengths than purely aromatic samples. The aliphatic bonds are more fragile and would only survive in cooler radiation fields. In harsher radiation fields, the aliphatics attached to the aromatic hydrocarbons are destroyed.

The Magellanic Clouds are great laboratories to study the evolution of stars at two metallicities lower than solar. They provide excellent testbeds for stellar evolution theory and in particular for the impact of metallicity on stellar evolution. It is important to test stellar evolution models at metallicities lower than solar in order to use the models to predict the evolution and properties of the first stars. In these proceedings, after recalling the effects of metallicity, we present stellar evolution models including the effects of rotation at the Magellanic Clouds metallicities. We then compare the models to various observations (ratios of sub-groups of massive stars and supernovae, nitrogen surface enrichment and gamma-ray bursts) and show that the models including the effects of rotation reproduce most of the observational constraints.

Explosive evolution of nuclei of sungrazing comets near the solar surface, which occurs at conditions of intense interaction between the solar atmosphere and falling high-velocity comet nuclei as well as the relation of the phenomenon to the character of solar activity are analytically considered. It is found that, due to aerodynamic fragmentation of the falling body in the solar chromosphere and transversal expansion of the fragmented mass under the action of pressure gradient on the frontal surface, thermalization of the kinetic energy of the body occurs by sharp stopping of the disklike hypervelocity fragmented mass near the solar surface within a relatively very thin subphotospheric layer and has, therefore, an essentially impulsive and strongly explosive character. The specific energy release in the explosion region, erg/g, considerably exceeds the evaporation/sublimation heat of the body so that the process is accompanied by production of a high-temperature plasma. The energetics of such an explosive process corresponds to that of very large solar flares for falling bodies having masses equal to the mass of the nucleus of Comet Halley. Spectral observations of sungrazing comets by SOHO-like telescopes in a wide spectral range, including X rays, with a high time resolution, of the order of 0.1–10 s, are important for revealing solar activity in the form of an impact-generated photospheric flare.

Constraints on the chemical yields of the first stars and supernova can be derived by examining the abundance patterns of different types of metal-poor stars. We show how metal-poor stars are employed to derive constraints of the formation of the first low-mass stars by testing a fine-structure line cooling theory. The concept of stellar archaeology, that stellar abundances truly reflect the chemical composition of the earliest times, is then addressed. The accretion history of a sample of metal-poor stars is examined in detail in a cosmological context, and found to have no impact on the observed abundances. Predictions are made for the lowest possible Fe and Mg abundances observable in the Galaxy, [Fe/H]min = −7.5 and [Mg/H]min = −5.5. The absence of stars below these values is so far consistent with a top-heavy IMF. These predictions are directly relevant for future surveys and the next generation of telescopes.

Dynamical processes are progressively introduced in stellar evolution. In this framework, the Sun is a very specific case where both models and observations have been developed in parallel during the last decade in order to progress on our present insight of solar like stars. In this poster I show the recent progress done on both sides for the rotation of the radiative zone. The present knowledge of the solar rotation profile comes from the detection of acoustic and gravity modes with the instruments GOLF and MDI aboard SoHO. In parallel we study the sensitivity of the theoretical rotation profiles obtained with the CESAM code using different rotation history in the premainsequence.

We present an algorithm for the removal of trends in time series data. The trends could be caused by various systematic and random noise sources such as cloud passages, change of airmass or CCD noise. In order to determine the trends, we select template stars based on a hierarchical clustering algorithm. The hierarchy tree is constructed using the similarity matrix of light curves of stars whose elements are the Pearson correlation values. A new bottom-up merging algorithm is developed to extract clusters of template stars that are highly correlated among themselves, and may thus be used to identify the trends. We then use the multiple linear regression method to de-trend all individual light curves based on these determined trends. Experimental results with simulated light curves which contain artificial trends and events are presented. We also applied our algorithm to TAOS (Taiwan-American Occultation Survey) wide field data observed with a 0.5m f/1.9 telescope equipped with 2k by 2k CCD. With our approach, we successfully removed trends and increased signal to noise in TAOS light curves.

Despite the large impact very massive stars (>30 M⊙) have in astrophysics, their fundamental parameters remain uncertain. I present results of a survey aiming to characterize the most massive stars in the Magellanic Clouds. The survey targets the brightest, blue, eclipsing binaries discovered by the OGLE microlensing survey, for which masses and radii are measured to 5%. Such precise data are rare and provide constraints for theories of massive star formation and evolution at low metallicities.

We study the effects of Supernova (SN) feedback on the formation of galaxies using hydrodynamical simulations in a ΛCDM cosmology. We use an extended version of the code GADGET-2 which includes chemical enrichment and energy feedback by Type II and Type Ia SN, metal-dependent cooling and a multiphase model for the gas component. We focus on the effects of SN feedback on the star formation process, galaxy morphology, evolution of the specific angular momentum and chemical properties. We find that SN feedback plays a fundamental role in galaxy evolution, producing a self-regulated cycle for star formation, preventing the early consumption of gas and allowing disks to form at late times. The SN feedback model is able to reproduce the expected dependence on virial mass, with less massive systems being more strongly affected.

We have found a similar tendency of the spatial dynamics at 34 GHz for all major temporal sub-peaks of the burst with the re-distribution of the brightness from the footpoints (on the rising phase of each peak) to the upper part of the loop (on the decay phase). Observed dynamics is interpreted by the re-distribution of accelerated electrons number density with their relative enhancement in the loop top. Results of diagnostics show that the ratio of non-thermal electron number density in the loop top and in the footpoint changes 7 times from the peak to decay phase. Model simulations by solving the Fokker-Planck equation allowed to determine an injection type which is able to result in necessary dynamics of energetic electrons.

Although unidentified infrared bands (UIBs) have been observed in many astrophysical environments, there is one notable exception: carbon (C) stars. Only a handful of C stars have been shown to emit UIBs and most have hot companions. This makes C stars with hot companions an ideal location to investigate the emitters of the UIBs. PAHs are excited by absorption of single photons whose energy is then distributed over the whole molecule. These molecules then emit the energy at the characteristic wavelengths, but the precise wavelengths and strength ratios depend on the size, composition and charge state of the individual PAHs. Furthermore, the wavelength of photons needed to excite PAHs depends on their size and charge state. While small PAHs undoubtedly need higher energy (UV) photons, it has been suggested that large or ionized PAHS (>100 C atoms) can be excited by visible or even near-IR photons. The lack of PAH emission from single carbon stars suggests that either PAHs do not form around C stars or that only small neutral grains form, which cannot be excited by a C star's radiation field.

There are two competing formation mechanisms for PAHs around C stars: (1) “bottom-up” where acetylene molecules react to form aromatic rings, building up to PAHs; or (2) “top-down”, where small carbon grains react with H atoms and desorb PAHs

Using spatially resolved spectroscopic observations from Gemini/Michelle, of five carbon stars with hot companions, we investigate the circumstance under which PAH emission occurs and try to discriminate between formation mechanisms.

The Working Group Galactic Center was created following a Business Meeting meeting of Division VII Galactic Systems, held with the concurrence of Division VIII Galaxies and the Universe, at the IAU XXVI General Assembly in Prague, 2006. The objective of the meeting was to highlight both recent progress on understanding the Galactic Center as well as to illustrate the way in which the center of the Milky Way Galaxy serves as a laboratory for understanding other galactic nuclei.

We briefly review the question of the origin, during a sunspot cycle, of well isolated sunspots. This includes big sunspots like the one observed in Nov. 2006. An overall axi-symmetric morphology is not perfectly observed when the morphological details of both the umbra and of the penumbra are considered. This is especially the case of umbral dots always present inside the core of a sunspot and also of penumbral filaments with non radial parts. However, the distribution of the surrounding fields, including deep layers, the occurrence of persistent coherent running penumbral waves, the magnetic moat behavior, the bright ring phenomena, etc. seem to justify a revival of the naive former but revised (converging motions are considered) Larmor model of a sunspot (as suggested by Lorrain et al. 2006). To discuss the “emergence” of single isolated sunspots from deep layers we performed a quasi-statistical analysis limited to cycle 23. It is based on MDI data taken in the continuum, using the accompanying magnetograms to check our assertion. Surprisingly, single sunspots are definitely and preferably found to occur at low latitude and during the descending branch of the cycle. To explain our observations we speculate about the behavior of the deeply seated magnetic loop, following the original idea of H. Alfven (with whirl rings which follow the global dipolar field when approaching the surface). It could lead to a closed loop approximately orthogonal to the local radius, similar to “smoke rings” arriving at the surface of the Sun and sometimes also called a plasmoid. The ring will only very weakly feel the destabilizing Coriolis force, when emerging at very low latitudes, which seems consistent with our observations.

Division VIII provides a focus for astronomers studying a wide range of problems related to galaxies and cosmology. Objects of the study include individual galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies, large scale structure, comic microwave background radiation and the universe itself. Approaches are diverse from observational one to theoretical one including computer simulations.

It has long been clear that most, if not all, of the mass loss experienced by stars from 0.8 to 8 solar masses occurs near the tip of the AGB and/or the RGB. Evolutionary studies have incorporated empirical mass loss laws but theoretical models suggest quite different dependence of mass loss rate on stellar parameters. We are combining evolutionary model calculations with ISUEVO with mass loss modeling using the Bowen code in a systematic study of final stages of stellar evolution. We mapped the RGB (without steady mass loss) to the “Death Zone” as a function of mixing length, mass, and metallicity. We compared these results with observation data from Origlia. We are investigating a possible mass loss mechanism through companions as a complement to mass loss through pulsation. By the end of the project we expect to provide a reliable prescription for AGB mass loss.
