We present a matched filter algorithm to detect transits of planets that orbit both components of close eclipsing binaries in CoRoT targets. The formation of binary systems surrounded by disks is one of the most common outcomes of stellar formation; their detection would therefore constitute an important discovery. In an eclipsing binary system, the binary-planet alignment gives raised transit probabilities and the special transit shapes from circumbinary planets provide a unique identifier for their planetary nature; the problems of false alarms are largely avoided. CoRoT data have unprecedented time coverage and photometric precision that make them especially suitable for the search of transits of planets across eclipsing binaries. No reliable detections of circumbinary planets have been reported yet, and their discovery would constitute a new class of planets.

We have performed multiwavelength analysis on an event with a metric type II burst, which appeared first as fragmented emission lanes in the radio dynamic spectrum. The start frequency was unusually high. Since type II bursts are thought to be signatures of propagating shock waves, it is of interest to know how the shocks, and the type II bursts, are formed. This radio event was associated with a flare and a coronal mass ejection (CME), and we investigate their connection. Observations suggested that a propagating shock was formed due to the erupting structures, and the observed radio emission reflects the high densities in active region loops. We then utilised numerical MHD simulations, to study the shock structure induced by an erupting CME, in a model corona including dense loops. Our simulations show that the fragmented part of the type II burst can be formed when a coronal shock driven by a CME passes through a system of dense loops overlying an active region. To produce fragmented emission, the conditions for plasma emission have to be more favourable inside the loop than in the inter-loop area. The obvious hypothesis, consistent with our simulation model, is that the shock strength decreases significantly in the space between the denser loops. Outside the active region, the type II burst dies out when the changing geometry no longer favours the electron shock-acceleration.

We present 2D local box simulations of near-surface radiative magneto-convection with prescribed magnetic flux, carried out with the MHD version of the CO5BOLD code for the Sun and a solar-like star with a metal-poor chemical composition (metal abundances reduced by a factor 100, [M/H] = −2). The resulting magneto-hydrodynamical models can be used to study the influence of the metallicity on the properties of magnetized stellar atmospheres. A preliminary analysis indicates that the horizontal magnetic field component tends to be significantly stronger in the optically thin layers of metal-poor stellar atmospheres.

We investigate the size-density relation of H ii regions in blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs) by compiling observational data of their size (Di) and electron density (ne). We find that the size-density relation follows a relation with constant column density (ne ∝ Di−1) rather than with constant luminosity (ne ∝ Di−1.5). Such behavior resembles that of Galactic H ii regions, and may imply an underlying “scale-free” connection. Because this size-density relation cannot be explained by static models, we model and examine the evolution of the size-density relation of H ii regions by considering the star formation history and pressure-driven expansion of H ii regions. We find that the size-density relation of the entire BCD sample does not result from an evolutionary sequence of H ii regions but rather reflects a sequence with different initial gas densities (or “hierarchy” of density). We also find that the dust extinction of ionizing photons is significant for the BCD sample, despite their blue optical colors. This means that as long as the emission from H ii regions is used to trace massive star formation, we would miss the star formation activity in dense environments even in low-metallicity galaxies such as BCDs.

Comparison of elemental abundance features between old and young thin disk stars may reveal the action of ravaging winds from the Galactic bulge, which once enriched the whole disk, and set up the steep abundance gradient in the inner disk (RGC ≲ 10–;12 kpc) and simultaneously the metallicity floor ([Fe/H]~ −0.5) in the outer disk. After the end of a crucial influence by winds, chemical enrichment through accretion of a metal-poor material from the halo onto the disk gradually reduced the metallicity of the inner region, whereas an increase in the metallicity proceeded beyond a solar circle. This results in a flattening of abundance gradient in the inner disk, and our chemical evolution models confirm this mechanism for a flattening, which is in good agreement with the observations. Our scenario also naturally explains an observed break in the metallicity floor of the outer disk by young stars since the limit of self-enrichment in the outer disk is supposed to be [Fe/H]≲ −1 and inevitably incurs a direct influence of the dilution by a low-metal infall whose metallicity is [Fe/H]~ −1. Accordingly, we propose that the enrichment by large-scale winds is a crucial factor for chemical evolution of the disk, and claim to reconsider the models thus far for the disk including the solar neighborhood, in which the metallicity is predicted to monotonously increase with time. Furthermore, we anticipate that a flattening of abundance gradient together with a metal-rich floor in the outer disk are the hallmark of disk galaxies with significant central bulges.

Global star formation is the key to understanding galaxy disk formation. This in turn depends on gravitational instability of disks and continuing gas accretion as well as minor merging. A key component is feedback from supernovae. Primary observational constraints on disk galaxy formation and evolution include the Schmidt-Kennicutt law, the Tully-Fisher relation and the galaxy luminosity function. I will review how theory confronts phenomenology, and discuss future prospects for refining our understanding of disk formation.

The SMC represents an exciting opportunity to observe the direct results of tidal interactions on star birth. One of the best indicators of recent star birth activity is the presence of significant numbers of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) — and the SMC has them in abundance! We present results from nearly 10 years of monitoring these systems plus a wealth of other ground-based optical data. Together they permit us to build a picture of a galaxy with a mass of only a few percent of the Milky Way but with a more extensive HMXB population. However, as often happens, new discoveries lead to some challenging puzzles — where are the other X-ray binaries (e.g., black hole systems) in the SMC? And why do virtually all the SMC HMXBs have Be star companions? The evidence arising from these extensive optical observations for this apparently unusual stellar evolution are discussed.

Division IX provides a forum for astronomers engaged in the planning, development, construction, and calibration of optical and infrared telescopes and instrumentation, as well as observational procedures including data processing.

Aromatic features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3 μm are observed in proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) as well as in PNe and H ii regions. Aliphatic features at 3.4 and 6.9 μm are also observed; however, these features are often stronger in PPNe than in PNe. These observations suggest an evolution in the features from simple molecules (C2H2) in AGB stars to aliphatics in PPNe to aromatics in PNe. In the same carbon-rich PPNe, a strong, broad, unidentified 21 μm emission feature has been found. We will present recent observations of the aromatic, aliphatic, and 21 μm emission features, along with C2H2 (13.7 μm) and a new feature at 15.8 μm, and discuss correlations among them and other properties of these PPNe.

We consider solar magnetic activity in the context of sunspot number variations, as a result of a non-linear oscillatory dynamo process. The apparent chaotic behavior of the 11-year sunspot cycles and undefined errors of observations create uncertainties for predicting the strength and duration of the cycles. Uncertainties in dynamo model parameters create additional difficulties for the forecasting. Modern data assimilation methods allow us to assimilate the observational data into the models for possible efficient and accurate estimations of the physical properties, which cannot be observed directly, such as the internal magnetic fields and helicity. We apply the Ensemble Kalman Filter method to a low-order non-linear dynamo model, which takes into account variations of the turbulent magnetic helicity and reproduces basic characteristics of the solar cycles. We investigate the predictive capabilities of this approach, and present test results for prediction of the previous cycles and a forecast of the next solar cycle 24.

Gaia, an ESA cornerstone mission, will obtain of the order of 100 high-precision photometric observations over five years for tens of millions of stars with V < 17. The vast number of red dwarfs in this data set, with their correspondingly deep (high S/N) transits, makes it worthwhile to explore the possibility of detecting transits in such data. Searching for transits under these circumstances requires a very different approach from that used for a normal, highly-sampled transit survey if the search is to be performed in a reasonable amount of time. It should be possible to identify a portion of the transiting Hot Jupiter/M dwarf systems in the data set, if the photometry is as stable and precise as specified by design. This same approach could be applied to ground-based transit searches – a transit survey targeted at red dwarfs with Jupiter-sized companions.

With two stellar sample A and B, the age-metallicity relation (AMR) in the Galactic thin disk is investigated. The results show two different AMRs: one is a nearly flat AMR from photometric analysis of sample A, the other is an obvious AMR derived from spectroscoipic analysis of sample B.

The ubiquitous presence of globular clusters around massive galaxies today suggests that these extreme star clusters must have been formed prolifically in the earlier universe in low-metallicity galaxies. Numerous adolescent and massive star clusters are already known to be present in a variety of galaxies in the local universe; however most of these systems have metallicities of 12 + log(O/H) > 8, and are thus not representative of the galaxies in which today's ancient globular clusters were formed. In order to better understand the formation and evolution of these massive clusters in environments with few heavy elements, we have targeted several low-metallicity dwarf galaxies with radio observations, searching for newly-formed massive star clusters still embedded in their birth material. The galaxies in this initial study are HS 0822+3542, UGC 4483, Pox 186, and SBS 0335-052, all of which have metallicities of 12 + log(O/H) < 7.75. While no thermal radio sources, indicative of natal massive star clusters, are found in three of the four galaxies, SBS 0335-052 hosts two such objects, which are incredibly luminous. The radio spectral energy distributions of these intense star-forming regions in SBS 0335-052 suggest the presence of ~12,000 equivalent O-type stars, and the implied star formation rate is nearing the maximum starburst intensity limit.

Within a period of intense activity (20 October to 5 November 2003), the injection and propagation of near relativistic electrons, resulted in hundreds of type III bursts recorded by the ARTEMISIV radio spectrograph (20–650 MHz). For a number of these type III events association with GOES SXR/Hα flare and/or SOHO/LASCO CME was established. We study the variation of characteristic type III parameters and their relationship with features of the associated flares and/or CMEs.

According to the IAU membership database, Commission 25 currently has 230 members from 40 countries. The Commission's membership represents 2.4% of the total IAU membership of 9658.

Pulsating variable stars can be powerful tools to study the structure, formation and evolution of galaxies. I discuss the role that the Magellanic Clouds' pulsating variables play in our understanding of the whole Magellanic System, in light of results on pulsating variables produced by extensive observing campaigns like the MACHO and OGLE microlensing surveys. In this context, I also briefly outline the promise of new surveys and astrometric missions which will target the Clouds in the near future.

The Harvard Variable HV2576, as a red supergiant in the Large Magallanic Cloud, has a complex light variation, which is not explained well. The existing one-period non-linear pulsation model deviated clearly from its light curve. We tried to fit the light curve by a superposition of several harmonic pulsations. By using the PDM, PERIOD04 and SparSpec codes to analyze the light variation, two periods with 525 and 261 days are well established. Furthermore, the 261-day period is found to change according to the wavelet analysis. In addition, the noise obeying the 1/f law. Based on all these facts, we suggest that the light variation of HV2576 may be due to huge convection cells that interplay with oscillation or the third very long period.

The mysterious 21 μm emission feature seen in only 12 C-rich proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) remains unidentified since its discovery in 1989. Over a dozen materials have been suggested as the carrier candidates while none of them has received general acceptance. We investigate the inorganic carrier candidates by applying the observational constraints of the feature strength and associated features. It is found that: (1) three candidates, TiC clusters, fullerenes with Ti impurity atoms, and SiS2, are not abundant enough to account for the emission power of the 21 μm band, (2) five candidates, doped-SiC, SiO2-mantled SiC dust, carbon and silicon mixtures, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4, all show associated features which are either not detected in the 21 μm sources or detected but with a much lower strength, and (3) FeO, which satisfies the abundance constraints, does not display any associated features which are not seen in the 21 μm sources. Moreover, FeO is more likely to survive in the C-rich environment than Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. Thus FeO seems to be the most plausible one among the inorganic carrier candidates.

Observations of AGN show that they generally possess a high metallicity, varying from solar to supersolar metallicities. This is the case since AGN are usually found in massive, bulge-dominated galaxies that have converted most of their gas into stars by the present epoch. Since AGN metallicity is strongly correlated with stellar mass, low-metallicity AGN are expected to be in low-mass dwarf galaxies. However, until now, searches in low-mass galaxies have only turned up AGN with metallicities around half that of typical AGN, i.e. with solar or slightly subsolar values. We report the discovery of four low-metallicity dwarf galaxies in the Data Release 6 of the Sloan Digital Sky survey, with 12 + log O/H in the range 7.4–8.0, and that appear to harbor an AGN. In the course of a long-range program to search for extremely metal-deficient emission-line dwarf galaxies, we have come across four galaxies with very unusual spectra: the strong permitted emission lines, mainly the Hα line, show very prominent broad components, with full widths at zero intensity corresponding to velocities varying between 2200 and 3500 km s−1, and extraordinarily large broad Hα luminosities, varying from 3×1041 to 2×1042 erg s−1. The Balmer lines show a very steep decrement, suggesting collisional excitation and that the broad emission comes from very dense gas (Ne ≫ 104 cm−3). Only the presence of an accretion disk around an intermediate-mass black hole in the dwarf galaxies appears to account for these properties.

The long-term records of sunspot area available separately for Northern and Southern Hemispheres have been investigated by means of cross-recurrence technique. Phase component of the north-south asymmetry was extracted. This measure demonstrates long-period systematic variations with the sign change of hemispheric leading in 1930s and 1960s. Moreover phase north-south asynchrony anticorrelates with the so called magnetic equator, which was defined as difference of the mean sunspot latitudes between two hemispheres. Relationships of the phase north-south asynchrony, magnetic equator and butterfly diagrams are presented and discussed.
