Warps in the outer gaseous disks of galaxies are a ubiquitous phenomenon, but it is still unclear what generates them. One theory is that warps are generated internally through spontaneous bending instabilities. Other theories suggest that they result from the interaction of the outer disk with accreting extragalactic material. In this case, we expect to find cases where the circular velocity of the warp gas is poorly correlated with the rotational velocity of the galaxy disk at the same radius. Optical spectroscopy presents itself as an interesting alternative to 21-cm observations for testing this prediction, because (i) separating the kinematics of the warp from those of the disk requires a spatial resolution that is higher than what is achieved at 21 cm at low HI column density; (ii) optical spectroscopy also provides important information on star formation rates, gas excitation, and chemical abundances, which provide clues to the origin of the gas in warps. We present here preliminary results of a study of the kinematics of gas in the outer-disk warps of seven edge-on galaxies, using multi-hour VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy.

We examine the source properties of X-class soft X-ray flares that were not associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs). All the flares were associated with intense microwave bursts implying the production of high energy electrons. However, most (85%) of the flares were not associated with metric type III bursts, even though open field lines existed in all but two of the active regions. The X-class flares seem to be truly confined because there was no material ejection (thermal or nonthermal) away from the flaring region into space.

Our ability to determine stellar ages from measurements of stellar rotation, hinges on how well we can measure the dependence of rotation on age for stars of different masses. Rotation periods for stars in open clusters are essential to determine the relations between stellar age, rotation, and mass. Until recently, ambiguities in vsini data and lack of cluster membership information, prevented a clear empirical definition of the dependence of rotation on color. Direct measurements of stellar rotation periods for members in young clusters have now revealed a well-defined period-color relation. We show new results for the open clusters M35 and M34. However, rotation periods based on ground-based observations are limited to young clusters. The Hyades represent the oldest coeval population of stars with measured rotation periods. Measurements of rotation periods for older stars are needed to properly constrain the dependence of stellar rotation on age. We present our plans to use the Kepler space telescope to measure rotation periods in clusters as old as and older than the Sun.

We present a study of the extinction, traced by the Balmer decrement, in HII regions in the dwarf galaxies NGC 1569 and NGC 4214. We find that the large-scale extinction around the most prominent HII regions in both galaxies forms a shell in which locally the intrinsic extinction can adopt relatively high values (AV = 0.8 − 0.9 mag) despite the low metallicity and thus the low overall dust content. The small-scale extinction (spatial resolution ~0.3″) shows fluctuations that are most likely due to variations in the dust distribution. We compare the distribution of the extinction to that of the dust emission, traced by Spitzer emission at 8 and 24μm, and to the emission of cold dust at 850μm. We find in general a good agreement between all tracers, except for the 850μm emission in NGC 4214 which is more extended than the extinction and the other emissions. Whereas in NGC 1569 the dust emission at all wavelengths is very similar, NGC 4214 shows spatial variations in the 24-to-850μm ratio.

We furthermore compared the 24μm and the extinction-corrected Hα emission from HII regions in a sample of galaxies with a wide range of metallicities and found a good correlation, independent of metallicity. We suggest that this lack of dependence on metallicity might be due to the formation of dust shells with a relatively constant opacity, like the ones observed here, around ionizing stars.

We desribe and discuss hydrodynamic simulations of the core helium flash using an initial model of a 1.25 M⊙ star with a metallicity of 0.02 near at its peak. Past research concerned with the dynamics of the core helium flash is inconclusive. Its results range from a confirmation of the standard picture, where the star remains in hydrostatic equilibrium during the flash (Deupree 1996), to a disruption or a significant mass loss of the star (Edwards 1969; Cole & Deupree 1980). However, the most recent multidimensional hydrodynamic study (Dearborn et al. 2006) suggests a quiescent behavior of the core helium flash and seems to rule out an explosive scenario. Here we present partial results of a new comprehensive study of the core helium flash, which seem to confirm this qualitative behavior and give a better insight into operation of the convection zone powered by helium burning during the flash. The hydrodynamic evolution is followed on a computational grid in spherical coordinates using our new version of the multi-dimensional hydrodynamic code HERAKLES, which is based on a direct Eulerian implementation of the piecewise parabolic method.

The main activity of the WG on Abundances in Red Giants has been to propose a JD for the IAU GA in 2009. The increasing evidence for distinct populations within globular clusters is leading to the view that there is a continuum between globular clusters and the smallest of the galaxies. Our JD was designed to investigate this link. However, our JD was incorporated into IAU Symposium No. 266 Star Clusters: Basic Building Blocks throughout Time and Space for the IAU XXVII in Rio de Janeiro, 2009. We will be responsible for organising one session in the Symposium to cover the agenda put forward in our JD proposal.

WHAT is a small-aperture short focal length automated telescope with an 8.2° × 8.2° field of view, located at the Wise Observatory, Israel. The system is similar to the HATNet telescopes and is aimed at searching for transiting extrasolar planets and variable objects. Operational since 2004, WHAT has accumulated ~100000 exposures of several fields and was part of the discovery of the transiting planet HD147506b. The synthesis of organic molecular anions in TMC-1 and IRC+10216 is investigated. Modelled C2H−, CN−, C3N−, C5N− and C7N− column densities are sufficiently great that these species might be observable in IRC+10216. Density-enhanced shells in the outer envelope of IRC+10216 are found to enhance the C2H− and CN− column densities by shielding these anions from destruction by UV radiation. From a newly-derived upper column density limit of 6.6 × 1010 cm−2 for C2H− in IRC+10216 we deduce the primary production mechanism for this anion to be C2H2 + H− ⇒ C2H− + H2. In TMC-1, due to the low radiative electron attachment rates calculated for C2H−, CN− and CH2CN−, these species have modelled column densities below the detection threshold. They could, however, be produced in reactions we have not yet considered.

Radio continuum emission from the supernova remnant G296.5 + 10.0 was observed using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Using a 104 MHz bandwidth split into 13 × 8 MHz spectral channels, it was possible to produce a pixel-by-pixel image of Rotation Measure (RM) across the entire remnant. A lack of correlation between RM and X-ray surface brightness reveals that the RMs originate from outside the remnant. Using this information, we will characterise the smooth component of the magnetic field within the supernova remnant and attempt to probe the magneto-ionic structure and turbulent scale sizes in the ISM and galactic halo along the line-of-sight.

We present a quantitative analysis of the star formation history (SFH) of 12 fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on unprecedented deep [(B–R),R] color—magnitude diagrams (CMDs) from Noël et al. (2007). Our fields reach down to the oldest main sequence (MS) turnoff with high photometric accuracy, which is vital for obtaining accurate SFHs. We use the IAC-pop code (Aparicio & Hidalgo 2009) to obtain the SFH, using a single CMD generated using IAC-star (Aparicio & Gallart 2004). We find that there are three main periods of enhancement of star formation: a young one peaked at ~0.2–0.5 Gyr old, only present in the eastern and in the central-most fields; one at intermediate ages, peaked at ~4–5 Gyr old in all fields; and an old one, peaked at ~10 Gyr in all the fields but the western ones, in which this old enhancement splits into two, peaked at ~8 Gyr old and at ~12 Gyr old. This “two-enhancement” zone seems to be a robust feature since it is unaffected when using different stellar evolutionary libraries, implying that stars in the SMC take a Hubble time or more to mix. This indicates that there was a global enhancement in ψ(t) at ~4–5 Gyr ago in the SMC. We also find that the age of the old population is similar at all radii and at all azimuth and we constrain the age of this oldest population to be older than ~11.5 Gyr old. The intermediate-age population, in turn, presents variations with both, radii and azimuth. Theoretical studies based on results from larger spatial areas are needed to understand the origin of the young gradient. This young component is highly affected by interactions between Milky Way/LMC/SMC. We do not find yet a region dominated by an old, Milky Way-like, halo at 4.5 kpc from the SMC center, indicating either that this old stellar halo does not exist in the SMC or that its contribution to the stellar populations, at the galactocentric distances of our outermost field, is negligible.

We report the results of our project devoted to study the chemical enrichment history of the field population in the Magellanic Clouds using Ca ii triplet spectroscopy.

We summarise recent progress in the understanding of the rotational evolution of low-mass stars (here defined as solar mass down to the hydrogen burning limit) both in terms of observations and modelling. Wide-field imaging surveys on moderate-size telescopes can now efficiently derive rotation periods for hundreds to thousands of open cluster members, providing unprecedented sample sizes which are ripe for exploration. We summarise the available measurements, and provide simple phenomenological and model-based interpretations of the presently-available data, while highlighting regions of parameter space where more observations are required, particularly at the lowest masses and ages ≳500 Myr.

Ethylene (C2H4) is a symmetric molecule that is best detected using mid-infrared transitions. We report on observations of the 10.5 μm ν7 band using the cryogenic grating spectrograph TEXES. These confirm the previous ethylene detection in the IRC+10216 circumstellar shell. We detect 18 ethylene lines. The lines are both narrow and weak with depths of no more than ~2%. The ethylene lines suggest an excitation temperature of ~80 K.

The Working Group on Active B-type Stars (formerly known as the Working Group on Be Stars) was re-established under IAU Commission 29 at the IAU General Assembly in Montreal, Quebec (Canada) in 1979, and has been continuously active to the present. Its main goal is to promote and stimulate research and international collaboration on the field of the active early-type (OB) stars.

Star formation is enhanced in spiral arms because of a combination of orbit crowding, cloud collisions, and gravitational instabilities. The characteristic mass for the instability is 107M⊙ in gas and 105M⊙ in stars, and the morphology is the familiar beads on a string with 1-2 kpc separation. Similar instabilities occur in resonance rings and tidal tails. Sequential triggering from stellar pressure occurs in two ways. For short times and near distances, it occurs in the bright rims and dense knots that lag behind during cloud dispersal. For long times, it occurs in swept-up shells and along the periphery of cleared regions. The first case should be common but difficult to disentangle from independent star formation in the same cloud. The second case has a causality condition and a collapse condition and is often easy to recognize. Turbulent triggering produces a hierarchy of dense cloudy structure and an associated hierarchy of young star positions. There should also be a correlation between the duration of star formation and the size of the region that is analogous to the size-linewidth relation in the gas. The cosmological context is provided by observations of star formation in high redshift galaxies. Sequential and turbulent triggering is not yet observable, but gravitational instabilities are, and they show a scale up from local instabilities by a factor of ~3 in size and ~100 in mass. This is most easily explained as the result of an increase in the ISM turbulent speed by a factor of ~5. In the clumpiest galaxies at high redshift, the clumps are so large that they should interact with each other and merge in the center, where they form or contribute to the bulge.

Advances in helioseismology provide new knowledge about the origin of solar magnetic activity. The key questions addressed by helioseismology are: what is the physical mechanism of the solar dynamo, how deep inside the Sun are the magnetic fields generated, how are they transported to the surface and form sunspots? Direct helioseismic signatures of the internal magnetic fields are weak and difficult to detect. Therefore, most of the information comes from observations of dynamical effects caused by the magnetic fields. I review results of recent helioseismic observations of the magnetohydrodynamics of the solar interior on various scales, including global dynamics associated with the dynamo processes, and formation of sunspots and active regions.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large scale structures of plasma (~1016g) and magnetic field expelled from the solar corona to the interplanetary medium. During their travel in the inner heliosphere, these “interplanetary CMEs” (ICMEs), suffer acceleration due to the interaction with the ambient solar wind. Based on hydrodynamic theory, we have developed an analytical model for the ICME transport which reproduce well the observed deceleration of fast ICMEs. In this work we present the results of the model and its application to the CME observed on May 13, 2005 and the associated interplanetary type II burst.

We present several results from our analysis of dwarf irregular galaxies culled from The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS). We analyse the rotation curves of two galaxies based on “bulk” velocity fields, i.e. velocity maps from which random non–circular motions are removed. We confirm that their dark matter distribution is best fit by an isothermal halo model. We show that the star formation properties of dIrr galaxies resemble those of the outer parts of larger, spiral systems. Lastly, we study the large scale (3–D) distribution of the gas, and argue that the gas disk in dIrrs is thick, both in a relative, as well as in an absolute sense as compared to spirals. Massive star formation through subsequent supernova explosions is able to redistribute the bulk of the ISM, creating large cavities. These cavities are often larger, and longer–lived than in spiral galaxies.

Spectral analysis by means of Non-LTE model-atmosphere techniques has arrived at a high level of sophistication: fully line-blanketed model atmospheres which consider opacities of all elements from H to Ni allow the reliable determination of photospheric parameters of hot, compact stars. Such models provide a crucial test of stellar evolutionary theory: recent abundance determinations of trace elements like, e.g., F, Ne, Mg, P, S, Ar, Fe, and Ni are suited to investigate on AGB nucleosynthesis. E.g., the strong Fe depletion found in hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars is a clear indication of an efficient s-process on the AGB where Fe is transformed into Ni or even heavier trans iron-group elements. We present results of recent spectral analyses based on high-resolution UV observations of hot stars.

SuperLupus is a deep transit survey monitoring a Galactic Plane field in the Southern hemisphere. The project is building on the successful Lupus Survey, and will double the number of images of the field from 1700 to 3400, making it one of the longest duration deep transit surveys. The immediate motivation for this expansion is to search for longer period transiting planets (5-8 days) and smaller radii planets. It will also provide near complete recovery for the shorter period planets (1-3 days). In March, April, and May 2008 we obtained the new images and work is currently in progress reducing these new data.
