In the Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 1948, there appear two papers by Lars Gårding and Turnbull respectively (Gårding [1], Turnbull [2]) which formulate the theory of Cayley and Capelli operators associated with symmetric matrices. Turnbull derives the modification, appropriate to symmetric matrices, of Capelli's Theorem, which states that (taking a third order operator for the sake of ease in writing)

with a similar meaning for the determinantal differential operator, while the symbols are polarisations (Capelli [1]; cf. Turnbull [1], p. 116). Gårding's theorem deals with the effect of such modified Capelli operators on powers of the determinant of the symmetric matrix in question. The subject of this note is an alternative derivation of the modified Capelli theorem and of Gårding's theorem.

We consider semilinear elliptic problems in which the right-hand-side nonlinearity depends on a parameter λ > 0. Two multiplicity results are presented, guaranteeing the existence of at least three non-trivial solutions for this kind of problem, when the parameter λ belongs to an interval (0,λ*). Our approach is based on variational techniques, truncation methods and critical groups. The first result incorporates as a special case problems with concave–convex nonlinearities, while the second one involves concave nonlinearities perturbed by an asymptotically linear nonlinearity at infinity.

We show that if G is an infinitely generated locally (polycyclic-by-finite) group with cohomology almost-everywhere finitary, then every finite subgroup of G acts freely and orthogonally on some sphere.

Let $X^{n}$ be an oriented closed generalized $n$-manifold, $n\ge 5$. In our recent paper (Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc. (2) 63 (2020), no. 2, 597–607), we have constructed a map $t:\mathcal {N}(X^{n}) \to H^{st}_{n} ( X^{n}; \mathbb{L}^{+})$ which extends the normal invariant map for the case when $X^{n}$ is a topological $n$-manifold. Here, $\mathcal {N}(X^{n})$ denotes the set of all normal bordism classes of degree one normal maps $(f,\,b): M^{n} \to X^{n},$ and $H^{st}_{*} ( X^{n}; \mathbb{E})$ denotes the Steenrod homology of the spectrum $\mathbb{E}$. An important non-trivial question arose whether the map $t$ is bijective (note that this holds in the case when $X^{n}$ is a topological $n$-manifold). It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the answer to this question is affirmative.

A long-standing conjecture of Faith in ring theory states that a left self-injective semi-primary ring A is necessarily a quasi-Frobenius ring. We propose a new method for approaching this conjecture, and prove it under some mild conditions; we show that if the simple A-modules are at most countably generated over a subring of the centre of A, then the conjecture holds. Also, the conjecture holds for algebras A over sufficiently large fields, i.e. if the cardinality of is larger than the dimension of the simple A-modules (or of A/Jac(A)). This effectively proves the conjecture in many situations, and we obtain several previously known results on this problem as a consequence.

We prove the existence of exponentially and superexponentially localized breather solutions for discrete nonlinear Klein–Gordon systems. Our approach considers $d$-dimensional infinite lattice models with general on-site potentials and interaction potentials being bounded by an arbitrary power law, as well as, systems with purely anharmonic forces, cases which are much less studied particularly in a higher-dimensional set-up. The existence problem is formulated in terms of a fixed-point equation considered in weighted sequence spaces, which is solved by means of Schauder's Fixed-Point Theorem. The proofs provide energy bounds for the solutions depending on the lattice parameters and its dimension under physically relevant non-resonance conditions.

We develop the diffeomorphism invariant Colombeau-type algebra of nonlinear generalized functions in a modern and compact way. Using a unifying formalism for the local setting and on manifolds, the construction becomes simpler and more accessible than before.

Finding a common point in a finite intersection of sets, say, $C=\cap _{i=1}^{n} F(T_i)$, where each $T_i$ is a non-expansive-type mapping, is a central task in mathematics as it cuts across different areas of application, such as road design and medical image reconstruction. There are many algorithms for approximating solutions of such problems. Of particular interest in the implementation of these algorithms are cost and speed. This is due to the large computations to be performed at each step of the iterative process. One of the most efficient methods that optimizes the time of computation and cost of implementation is the asynchronous-parallel algorithm method. In this paper, we prove a weak convergence theorem for the asynchronous sequential inertial (ASI) algorithm (introduced by Heaton and Censor in [H. Heaton and Y. Censor, Asynchronous sequential inertial iterations for common fixed points problems with an application to linear systems, J. Glob. Optim. 74 (2019), 95–119.] ) for strictly pseudo-contractive mappings in Hilbert spaces. Under additional mild conditions, we also obtain a strong convergence theorem. Finally, we apply the ASI algorithm to solving convex minimization problems and Hammerstein integral equations.

We construct and examine an operator space $X$, isometric to $\ell_2$, such that every completely bounded map from its subspace $Y$ into $X$ is a compact perturbation of a linear combination of multiples of a shift of given multiplicity and their adjoints. Moreover, every completely bounded map on $X$ is a Hilbert–Schmidt perturbation of such a linear combination.

Is the cohomology of the classifying space of a p-compact group, with Noetherian twisted coefficients, a Noetherian module? In this paper we provide, over the ring of p-adic integers, such a generalization to p-compact groups of the Evens–Venkov Theorem. We consider the cohomology of a space with coefficients in a module, and we compare Noetherianity over the field with p elements with Noetherianity over the p-adic integers, in the case when the fundamental group is a finite p-group.

It is shown that if f is an analytic function of sufficiently small exponential type in the right half-plane, which takes integer values on a subset of the positive integers having positive lower density, then f is a polynomial.

We study a variant of the mean curvature flow for closed, convex hypersurfaces where the normal velocity is a non-homogeneous function of the principal curvatures. We show that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a certain pinching condition, then this is preserved and the flow converges to a sphere under rescaling.

In (5) and (6) we studied certain subgroups of infinite dimensional linear groups over rings. In particular we investigated how the structure of the subgroups was related to the structure of the rings over which the linear groups were defined. It became clear that it might prove useful to study generalised nilpotent properties of rings analogous to Baer nilgroups and Gruenberg groups. We look briefly at some classes of generalised nilpotent rings in this paper and obtain a lattice diagram exhibiting all the strict inclusions between the classes.

A ring R is said to be a P-ancestral ring if all proper non-zero sub-rings of R have property P. If p is the property that every proper non-zero sub-ring of R is a (two-sided) ideal then the ring Z of rational integers furnishes an example of a P-ancestral ring.

The complex Stiefel manifold Wn,k, where n≦k≦1, is a space whose points are k-frames in Cn. By using the formula of McCarty [4], we will make the calculations of the Whitehead products in the groups π*(Wn,k). The case of real and quaternionic will be treated by Nomura and Furukawa [7]. The product [[η],j1l] appears as generator of the isotropy group of the identity map of Stiefel manifolds. In this note we use freely the results of the 2-components of the homotopy groups of real and complex Stiefel manifolds such as Paechter [8], Hoo-Mahowald [1], Nomura [5], Sigrist [9] and Nomura-Furukawa [6].

In this paper we are dealing with oscillatory and asymptotic behaviour of solutions of second order nonlinear difference equations of the form

Some sufficient conditions for all solutions of (E) to be oscillatory are obtained. Asymptotic behaviour of nonoscillatory solutions of (E) is considered also.

In this note it is shown that the class of all multipliers from the d-parameter Hardy space $H_{{\rm prod}}^1 ({\open T}^d)$ to L2 (𝕋d) is properly contained in the class of all multipliers from L logd/2L (𝕋d) to L2(𝕋d).
