It is shown that, if a non-linear locally finite simple group is a union of finite simple groups, then the centralizer of every element of odd order has a series of finite length with factors which are either locally solvable or non-abelian simple. Moreover, at least one of the factors is non-linear simple. This is also extended to abelian subgroup of odd orders.

These equations are solved by the ordinary methods applicable to linear equations with constant coefficients.

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first to correct the statement of Theorem 1 in [4], and secondly to consider related problems in the class of ideally finite Lie algebras.

Throughout, L will denote a Lie algebra over a field K, F(L) will be its Frattini subalgebra and φ(L) its Frattini ideal. We will denote by the class of Lie algebras all of whose maximal subalgebras have codimension 1 in L. The Lie algebra with basis {u–1, u0, u1} and multiplication u–1u0 = u–1, u–1u1 = u0, u0u1 = u1 will be labelled L1(0).

A new approach to fractional integrals of distributions on a half-line is suggested. The results admit an extension to a large class of Mellin convolutions.

We prove the existence of exponentially and superexponentially localized breather solutions for discrete nonlinear Klein–Gordon systems. Our approach considers $d$-dimensional infinite lattice models with general on-site potentials and interaction potentials being bounded by an arbitrary power law, as well as, systems with purely anharmonic forces, cases which are much less studied particularly in a higher-dimensional set-up. The existence problem is formulated in terms of a fixed-point equation considered in weighted sequence spaces, which is solved by means of Schauder's Fixed-Point Theorem. The proofs provide energy bounds for the solutions depending on the lattice parameters and its dimension under physically relevant non-resonance conditions.

The result of Ballantine [1] to the effect that a singular matrix A is a product of k idempotent matrices if and only if the rank of I – A does not exceed k times the nullity of A is generalized to endomorphisms of a class of independence algebras.

The square described on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the squares described on the other two sides.

About half a hundred proofs of this theorem have been given, but few of them have been “ocular,” that is, few have shown how the two smaller squares may be decomposed so as to fit into the largest square. One of the most elegant of the ocular proofs is that of Henry Perigal, and was discovered about 1830. A demonstration of its correctness is not difficult to obtain, but the following demonstration is believed to be new. It depends somewhat on algebra, and presupposes a simple lemma.

Let f be a holomorphic self-map of the unit ball in dimension 2, which does not have an interior fixed point. Suppose that f has a Wolff point p with the boundary dilatation coefficient equal to 1 and the non-tangential differential dfp = id. The local behaviours of f near p are quite diverse, and we give a detailed study in many typical cases. As a byproduct, we give a dynamical interpretation of the Burns–Krantz rigidity theorem. Note also that similar results hold on two-dimensional contractible smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains.

Finding a common point in a finite intersection of sets, say, $C=\cap _{i=1}^{n} F(T_i)$, where each $T_i$ is a non-expansive-type mapping, is a central task in mathematics as it cuts across different areas of application, such as road design and medical image reconstruction. There are many algorithms for approximating solutions of such problems. Of particular interest in the implementation of these algorithms are cost and speed. This is due to the large computations to be performed at each step of the iterative process. One of the most efficient methods that optimizes the time of computation and cost of implementation is the asynchronous-parallel algorithm method. In this paper, we prove a weak convergence theorem for the asynchronous sequential inertial (ASI) algorithm (introduced by Heaton and Censor in [H. Heaton and Y. Censor, Asynchronous sequential inertial iterations for common fixed points problems with an application to linear systems, J. Glob. Optim. 74 (2019), 95–119.] ) for strictly pseudo-contractive mappings in Hilbert spaces. Under additional mild conditions, we also obtain a strong convergence theorem. Finally, we apply the ASI algorithm to solving convex minimization problems and Hammerstein integral equations.

Every distributive double p-algebra L is shown to have a congruence permutable extension K such that every congruence of L has a unique extension to K.

In a previous paper we studied the asymptotic distribution of the multiparameter eigenvalues of uniformly right definite multiparameter Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problems. In this paper we extend the analysis to deal with multiparameter Sturm–Liouville problems satisfying uniform left definiteness, and non-uniform left and right definiteness.

We prove a technical result required by Ivanov and Shpectorov in their construction of a non-split extension of 34371 by the Baby Monster simple group.

In this note, we determine fields K and groups G that are either nilpotent or FC and such that the set of torsion elements of the group ring KG forms a subgroup.

Let υ0 be a valuation of a field K0 with value group G0 and υ be an extension of υ0 to a simple transcendental extension K0(x) having value group G such that G/G0 is not a torsion group. In this paper we investigate whether there exists t∈K0(x)/K0 with υ(t) non-torsion mod G0 such that υ is the unique extension to K0(x) of its restriction to the subfield K0(t). It is proved that the answer to this question is “yes” if υ0 is henselian or if υ0 is of rank 1 with G0 a cofinal subset of the value group of υ in the latter case, and that it is “no” in general. It is also shown that the affirmative answer to this problem is equivalent to a fundamental equality which relates some important numerical invariants of the extension (K, υ)/(K0, υ0).

We find a class of functions f such that there exists a fixed a ∈(−1, 1) with the following property

Let $A$ be a commutative comodule algebra over a commutative bialgebra $H$. The group of invertible relative Hopf modules maps to the Picard group of $A$, and the kernel is described as a quotient group of the group of invertible group-like elements of the coring $A\otimes H$, or as a Harrison cohomology group. Our methods are based on elementary $K$-theory. The Hilbert 90 theorem follows as a corollary. The part of the Picard group of the coinvariants that becomes trivial after base extension embeds in the Harrison cohomology group, and the image is contained in a well-defined subgroup $E$. It equals $E$ if $H$ is a cosemisimple Hopf algebra over a field.

We introduce an action of a discrete subgroup $\varGamma$ of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})^n$ on the space of pseudodifferential operators of $n$ variables, and construct a map from the space of Hilbert modular forms for $\varGamma$ to the space of pseudodifferential operators invariant under such a $\varGamma$-action, which is a lifting of the symbol map of pseudodifferential operators. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a certain type of pseudodifferential operator to be $\varGamma$-invariant.
