Much of the work on the theory of diffraction by an infinite wedge has been for cases of harmonic time-dependence. Oberhettinger (1) obtained an expression for the Green's function of the wave equation in the two dimensional case of a line source of oscillating current parallel to the edge of a wedge with perfectly conducting walls. Solutions of the time-dependent wave equation have been obtained by Keller and Blank (2), Kay (3) and more recently by Turner (4) who considered the diffraction of a cylindrical pulse by a half plane.

In the present paper we determine the Laplace transforms of the modified Bessel function of the second kind Kn(t±mx), where m is any positive integer. The Laplace transforms are given in (2) and (4) below, p being the transform parameter and having positive real part.

An analytic function is generally given either directly as a power-series, or at anyrate in some form which can readily be converted into a power-series. The power-series is not an altogether satisfactory method of representing the function, on account of the failure of its convergence outside its circle of convergence; in this respect it is decidedly inferior to the method of representing the function by a continued fraction, as this latter expression in many cases converges over the whole plane, except on certain curves.

For a two-step nilpotent locally compact group $G$, we determine the Glimm ideal space of the group $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G)$ and its topology. This leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for $C^*(G)$ to be quasi-standard. Moreover, some results about the Glimm classes of points in the primitive ideal space $\mathrm{Prim}(C^*(G))$ are obtained.

Let R be a Cohen–Macaulay local ring. It is shown that under some mild conditions, the Cohen–Macaulay property is preserved under linkage. We also study the connection of the (Sn) locus of a horizontally linked module and the attached primes of certain local cohomology modules of its linked module.

Given two intersecting domains, we investigate the boundary behaviour of the quotient of Martin kernels of each domain. To this end, we give a characterization of minimal thinness for a difference of two subdomains in terms of Martin kernels of each domain. As a consequence of our main theorem, we obtain the boundary growth of the Martin kernel of a Lipschitz domain, which corresponds to earlier results for the boundary decay of the Green function for a Lipschitz domain investigated by Burdzy, Carroll and Gardiner.

Our first aim in this paper is to deal with the maximum principle for subfunctions in an arbitrary unbounded domain. As an application, we next give a result concerning the classical Phragmén–Lindelöf theorem for subfunctions in a cone. For a subfunction defined in a cone that is dominated on the boundary by a certain function, we finally generalize the Phragmén–Lindelöf type theorem by making a generalized harmonic majorant of it.

Let K be a field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the polynomial identities of representations of Lie algebras, also called weak identities, or identities of pairs. These identities are determined by pairs of the form (A, L) where A is an associative enveloping algebra for the Lie algebra L. Then a weak identity of (A, L) (or an identity for the representation of L associated to A) is an associative polynomial which vanishes when evaluated on elements of L⊆ A. One of the most influential results in the area of PI algebras was the theory developed by Kemer. A crucial role in it was played by the construction of the Grassmann envelope of an associative algebra and the close relation of the identities of the algebra and its Grassmann envelope. Here we consider varieties of pairs. We prove that under some restrictions one can develop a theory similar to that of Kemer's in the study of identities of representations of Lie algebras. As a consequence, we establish that in the case when K is algebraically closed, if a variety of pairs does not contain pairs corresponding to representations of sl2(K), and if the variety is generated by a pair where the associative algebra is PI then it is soluble. As another consequence of the methods used to obtain the above result, and applying ideas from papers by Giambruno and Zaicev, we were able to construct a pair (A, L) such that its PI exponent (if it exists) cannot be an integer. We recall that the PI exponent exists and is an integer whenever A is an associative (a theorem by Giambruno and Zaicev), or a finite-dimensional Lie algebra (Zaicev). Gordienko also proved that the PI exponent exists and is an integer for finite-dimensional representations of Lie algebras.

We prove that the canonical ring of a canonical variety in the sense of de Fernex and Hacon is finitely generated. We prove that canonical varieties are Kawamata log terminal (klt) if and only if is finitely generated. We introduce a notion of nefness for non-ℚ-Gorenstein varieties and study some of its properties. We then focus on these properties for non-ℚ-Gorenstein toric varieties.

Let f be a holomorphic self-map of the unit ball in dimension 2, which does not have an interior fixed point. Suppose that f has a Wolff point p with the boundary dilatation coefficient equal to 1 and the non-tangential differential dfp = id. The local behaviours of f near p are quite diverse, and we give a detailed study in many typical cases. As a byproduct, we give a dynamical interpretation of the Burns–Krantz rigidity theorem. Note also that similar results hold on two-dimensional contractible smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains.

A conjecture of Gromov states that a one-ended word-hyperbolic group must contain a subgroup that is isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. Recent papers by Gordon and Wilton and by Kim and Wilton give sufficient conditions for hyperbolic surface groups to be embedded in a hyperbolic Baumslag double G. Using Nielsen cancellation methods based on techniques from previous work by the second author, we prove that a hyperbolic orientable surface group of genus 2 is embedded in a hyperbolic Baumslag double if and only if the amalgamated word W is a commutator: that is, W = [U, V] for some elements U, V ∈ F. Furthermore, a hyperbolic Baumslag double G contains a non-orientable surface group of genus 4 if and only if W = X2Y2 for some X, Y ∈ F. G can contain no non-orientable surface group of smaller genus.

We define a growing model of random graphs. Given a sequence of non-negative integers {dn}n=0∞ with the property that di≤i, we construct a random graph on countably infinitely many vertices v0, v1… by the following process: vertex vi is connected to a subset of {v0, …, vi−1} of cardinality di chosen uniformly at random. We study the resulting probability space. In particular, we give a new characterization of random graphs, and we also give probabilistic methods for constructing infinite random trees.

The famous five halves theorem of Boardman states that, if T: Mm → Mm is a smooth involution defined on a non-bounding closed smooth m-dimensional manifold Mm (m > 1) and if

is the fixed-point set of T, where Fj denotes the union of those components of F having dimension j, then 2m ≤ 5n. If the dimension m is written as m = 5k − c, where k ≥ 1 and 0 ≤ c < 5, the theorem states that the dimension n of the fixed submanifold is at least β(m), where β(m) = 2k if c = 0, 1, 2 and β(m) = 2k − 1 if c = 3, 4. In this paper, we give, for each m > 1, the equivariant cobordism classification of involutions (Mm, T), for which the fixed submanifold F attains the minimal dimension β(m).

This paper concerns a generalization of the Rees algebra of ideals due to Eisenbud, Huneke and Ulrich that works for any finitely generated module over a noetherian ring. Their definition is in terms of maps to free modules. We give an intrinsic definition using divided powers.

This work is motivated by the question of whether there are spaces X for which the Farber–Grant symmetric topological complexity TCS(X) differs from the Basabe–González–Rudyak–Tamaki symmetric topological complexity TCΣ(X). For a projective space ${\open R}\hbox{P}^m$, it is known that $\hbox{TC}^S ({\open R}\hbox{P}^{m})$ captures, with a few potential exceptional cases, the Euclidean embedding dimension of ${\open R}\hbox{P}^{m}$. We now show that, for all m≥1, $\hbox{TC}^{\Sigma}({\open R}\hbox{P}^{m})$ is characterized as the smallest positive integer n for which there is a symmetric ${\open Z}_{2}$-biequivariant map Sm×Sm→Sn with a ‘monoidal’ behaviour on the diagonal. This result thus lies at the core of the efforts in the 1970s to characterize the embedding dimension of real projective spaces in terms of the existence of symmetric axial maps. Together with Nakaoka's description of the cohomology ring of symmetric squares, this allows us to compute both TC numbers in the case of ${\open R}\hbox{P}^{2^{e}}$ for e≥1. In particular, this leaves the torus S1×S1 as the only closed surface whose symmetric (symmetrized) TCS (TCΣ) invariant is currently unknown.

The result of Ballantine [1] to the effect that a singular matrix A is a product of k idempotent matrices if and only if the rank of I – A does not exceed k times the nullity of A is generalized to endomorphisms of a class of independence algebras.

The paper is concerned with a curve F, the complete intersection of a quadric with a quartic surface, that admits a group of self-projectivities isomorphic to the symmetric group of degree 5. Every generator of the quadric is, as shown at the end of the paper, cut by F equianharmonically. F has 80 stalls, points where its osculating plane is stationary; they are of two kinds, 60 to be labelled ∑, the other 20 Ω. F also has inflections at 24 points which compose a figure encountered on earlier occasions. A search is made for tritangent planes of F of which, when reckoned according to proper multiplicity, there must be 2048. Among them are 60 all of whose three contacts are ∑ while a further 120 each involve a single ∑ among their contacts and 420 each involve a single Ω.
