This paper is a further contribution to the extensive study by a number of authors of the subalgebra lattice of a Lie algebra. We give some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a subalgebra to be upper modular. For algebraically closed fields of any characteristic these enable us to determine the structure of Lie algebras having abelian upper-modular subalgebras which are not ideals. We then study the structure of solvable Lie algebras having an abelian upper-modular subalgebra which is not an ideal and which has trivial intersection with the derived algebra; in particular, the structure is determined for algebras over the real field. Next we classify non-solvable Lie algebras over fields of characteristic zero having an upper-modular atom which is not an ideal. Finally, it is shown that every Lie algebra over a field of characteristic different from two and three in which every atom is upper modular is either quasi-abelian or a $\mu$-algebra.

The theory of representing continuous linear operators on function spaces in terms of integrals has had a long and fruitful history, beginning with the Riesz representation theorem in 1909. If T is such an operator, then the standard representation is T (f) = ∫f dμ, where the integral is denned in diverse ways, depending on the nature of the set of functions and the nature of T.

The authors have recently treated (2) the problem of finding subsets E of the real line , of type Fσ, such that E–E contains an interval and the k-fold vector sum (k)E is of measure zero. Positive results can be obtained, for all k, on the basis of a recent theorem of J. A. Haight (3), following earlier partial results (1), (4) for k ≦ 7; and indeed in these cases the problem has a solution with E a perfect set. An analogous problem, apparently in most respects subtler than the first, is the following. Do there exist finite regular Borel measures μ on such that is absolutely continuous (where is the adjoint of μ) and the kth convolution power μk is singular? Both problems are of interest in the general context of elucidating the properties of the measure algebra or, more generally, M(G) for locally compact abelian G. The second problem may be regarded as an attempt to provide (at least one aspectof) a multiplicity theory for the first.

The object of this paper is to discuss conditions for a maximum or minimum of functions of integrals of the type

employing the methods of the Calculus of Variations.

Given two intersecting domains, we investigate the boundary behaviour of the quotient of Martin kernels of each domain. To this end, we give a characterization of minimal thinness for a difference of two subdomains in terms of Martin kernels of each domain. As a consequence of our main theorem, we obtain the boundary growth of the Martin kernel of a Lipschitz domain, which corresponds to earlier results for the boundary decay of the Green function for a Lipschitz domain investigated by Burdzy, Carroll and Gardiner.

Let $A$ be a commutative comodule algebra over a commutative bialgebra $H$. The group of invertible relative Hopf modules maps to the Picard group of $A$, and the kernel is described as a quotient group of the group of invertible group-like elements of the coring $A\otimes H$, or as a Harrison cohomology group. Our methods are based on elementary $K$-theory. The Hilbert 90 theorem follows as a corollary. The part of the Picard group of the coinvariants that becomes trivial after base extension embeds in the Harrison cohomology group, and the image is contained in a well-defined subgroup $E$. It equals $E$ if $H$ is a cosemisimple Hopf algebra over a field.

We develop the diffeomorphism invariant Colombeau-type algebra of nonlinear generalized functions in a modern and compact way. Using a unifying formalism for the local setting and on manifolds, the construction becomes simpler and more accessible than before.

We introduce an action of a discrete subgroup $\varGamma$ of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})^n$ on the space of pseudodifferential operators of $n$ variables, and construct a map from the space of Hilbert modular forms for $\varGamma$ to the space of pseudodifferential operators invariant under such a $\varGamma$-action, which is a lifting of the symbol map of pseudodifferential operators. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a certain type of pseudodifferential operator to be $\varGamma$-invariant.

The inverse problem we will consider in this paper has its origins in the following problem connected with the scattering of acoustic waves in a nonhomogeneous medium. Let an incoming plane acoustic wave of frequency ω moving in the direction of the z axis be scattered off a “soft” sphere Ω of radius one which is surrounded by a pocket of rarefied or condensed air in which the local speed of sound is given by c(r) where r = |x| for x ∈ R3. Let us(x)eiωt be the velocity potential of the scattered wave and let r, θ, φ be spherical coordinates in R3. Then from a knowledge of the far field pattern f(θ, φ, λ) for λ = ω/c0 contained in some finite interval 0 < λ0 ≤ λ ≤ λ1,, we would like to determine the unknown function c(r).

Let R be a ring with an identity and a nilpotent ideal N. Let G be a group and let R(G) be the group ring of G over R. The aim of this paper is to study the relationships between the automorphisms of G and R-linear automorphisms of R(G) which either preserve the augmentation or do so modulo the ideal N. We shall show, for example, that if G is a unique product group ([6], Chapter 13, Section 1) then every automorphism of R(G) is modulo N induced from some automorphism of G. This result, which is immediate if, for instance, R is an integral domain, is here requiring of proof since R(G) has non-trivial units (e.g. if N ≠ 0, 1 + n(g − h), ∀ n ∈ N, ∀g, h ∈ G is a unit of augmentation 1), the existence of which is responsible for some of the difficulties inherent in the present investigation. We are obliged to the referee for several helpful suggestions and, in particular, for the proof of Lemma 2.2 whose use obviates our previous combinatorial arguments.

These equations are solved by the ordinary methods applicable to linear equations with constant coefficients.

We give a characterization of composition operators between algebras of analytic functions on a Banach space. We show (under fairly general conditions) that they are precisely the multiplicative operators that are transposes of operators of between the preduals of the algebras. The special cases of $H^\infty(U)$ and $H_{\mathrm{b}}(U)$ are considered. In these cases, the composition operators are those which are pointwise-to-pointwise continuous and/or $\tau_0$-to-$\tau_0$ continuous (where $\tau_0$ is the compact-open topology). We obtain Banach–Stone-type theorems for these algebras.

The square described on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the squares described on the other two sides.

About half a hundred proofs of this theorem have been given, but few of them have been “ocular,” that is, few have shown how the two smaller squares may be decomposed so as to fit into the largest square. One of the most elegant of the ocular proofs is that of Henry Perigal, and was discovered about 1830. A demonstration of its correctness is not difficult to obtain, but the following demonstration is believed to be new. It depends somewhat on algebra, and presupposes a simple lemma.
