Probably other presidents of this Society have wondered whether they have chosen the best type of topic for the occasion. The dilemma of Ephesians is not a new problem and one has little hope of shedding new light upon it. It is not a theological problem and therefore does not belong in that field of New Testament study which is especially popular today. Certain arguments applicable to it—linguistic or statistical—do not lend themselves easily to brief or oral presentation. There may, however, be some merit in restating the problem and in trying to indicate the limitation of our means forsolving it. Readers or hearers who expect an attempted proof of one side or the other will not find it here.

En étudiant les textes de Qumrân, j'ai souvent constaté que bien des auteurs s'étaient gravement fourvoyés, parce qu'ils imaginaient dans ces textes une eschatologie empruntée au christianisme. Ces contresens m'ont amené à réfléchir sur la notion d'eschatologie et, peu à peu, j'ai découvert qu'en plusieurs domaines cette notion provoquait des perturbations semblables. C'est pourquoi je voudrais attirer l'attention des exégètes et des théologiens sur le grave danger qui nous menace, si nous continuons dans la direction où nous sommes engagés.

Luke's account of the anointing of Jesus (Luke 7. 36–50) seems to be one of the gospel stories which critics have examined somewhat in isolation from the context of the surrounding material. One reason for this may be that Luke has told his story almost too well, if that is possible, so that the account of the woman's act of overflowing love and its contrast with the Pharisee's lack of care for his invited guest can easily be read as a self-contained unit. It has certainly provided useful ammunition for those who have sought to denigrate the Pharisaic outlook by comparing it with Christian love; moreover, as Dibelius recognised, the woman's action and Luke's six-fold repetition which emphasises forgiveness would have made the story very valuable for illustrating sermons.

These three short papers were delivered at the 72nd General Meeting of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, held in Pretoria, South Africa, on 8–11 August 2017. The ‘Quaestiones disputatae’ session was chaired by the President of the Society, Professor Michael Wolter. The first two papers engage with Teresa Morgan's book, Roman Faith and Christian Faith, and Professor Morgan responds to them in the third.

In the most recent monograph on John the Baptist Josef Ernst first deals with the Baptist in the Markan gospel and only then, in his second chapter, with the Baptist in Q, although it is generally recognized that Q is older than Mark.1 Moreover, in Ernst's opinion there is no contact between Mark and Q. Ernst does not even consider that Mark 1.2bc may be taken from Q (cf. Matt 11.10 = Luke 7.27),2 nor does he see in Mark 1.7–8 a more recent, re-written text of a more original version of Q.3 The extent of Q in John's preaching is, as in many Q studies, limited to Matt 3.7–12=Luke 3.7–9, 16b–17. In this text Matt 3.11=Luke 3.16 is ‘trimmed’: ‘I baptize you with water, but the Most Powerful One (= God) is coming … He will baptize you with a holy Spirit and fire.’ Thus neither ‘after me’ nor the qualification of John's unworthiness is retained.4

The speeches in Acts continue to arouse a variety of opinions; however, there is almost universal agreement that the style of the speeches belongs to Luke rather than to the persons to whom the speeches are attributed. This seems like a reasonable enough position given the convention among ancient historians to provide a précis of speeches rather than a verbatim transcription. However, Dibelius in his seminal essay on the speeches took Lukan style to be an indication of his unreliability: ‘Admittedly the speeches do, on the whole, reflect his (Luke's) style as regards vocabulary and phraseology; and it is this very fact which must constantly lead us to doubt their authenticity.’

3. Neue Fragmente zu75

Im letzten Bericht (N.T.S. xx (1974), 357–81) wurden ‘Neue Fragmente zu 66’ veröffentlicht (S. 376–81). Es handelte sich dabei um sechs der ‘Fragments non placés’ der Ausgabe. Sie waren von den Herausgebern trotz aller aufgewandten Mühe als unidentifizierbar aufgegeben worden, mit Hilfe des Münsteraner ‘Fragment-Identifizierungsprogramms’ gelang es, den Textzusammenhang einwandfrei festzustellen, in den sie gehören. Wie dieses Identifizierungsprogramm arbeitet, das auf der Einschaltung des Computers basiert, ist im vorigen Bericht kurz dargestellt und wird in einem Aufsatz: ‘Über die Möglichkeit der Identifikation kleiner Fragmente neutestamentlicher Handschriften mit Hilfe des Computers’, der demnächst erscheint, ausführlich dargelegt werden. Damals war bereits auf die Existenz von bisher unidentifizierten Fragmenten zu 75 hingewiesen worden. Ihre Zahl hat sich inzwischen dank der Anwendung des ‘Fragment-Identifizierungsprogramms’ in Münster von früher vier auf elf erhöht, so scheint es an der Zeit, sie der Öffentlichkeit bekannt zu machen.

Während die lukanische Kindheitsgeschichte im ganzen recht zusammenhängend konzipiert erscheint, weist ihr matthäisches Gegenstück zahlreiche Widersprüche und Ungereimtheiten auf. Dies gilt besonders für die im zweiten Kapitel geschilderten Vorgänge. Ohne plausible Erklärung bleiben z.B. das verhängnisvolle Zusammentreffen der Magier mit Herodes und die merkwürdigen Himmelsbewegungen des Wundersterns. Engelserscheinungen im Traum dienen wiederholt dazu, entscheidende Handlungsmomente notdürftig zu motivieren. Doch in der Situation nach dem Tode des Herodes versagt selbst diese Erzählfigur. Nachdem ein ἃγγελος κυρίου Josef versichert hat, die Verfolger des Kindes seien gestorben (2. 20), verläßt die Hl. Familie Ägypten und kehrt zurück in das ‘Land Israel’. In Judäa aber stellt sich heraus, daß die tödliche Gefahr nach wie vor besteht, denn nunmehr regiert dort Archelaus, ein Sohn des Herodes (2. 22).

Après 450 ans, la critique du texte du Nouveau Testament n'est plus à I'âge des progrès fulgurants — mais d'ailleurs a-t-elle jamais connu cet âge heureux? J'espère avoir au moins fait pressentir l'ampleur des travaux qui lui restent à accomplir si elle veut respecter intégralement ses sources et leur histoire. Par la force des choses, ces travaux seront de plus en plus longs et spécialisés, affaires d'équipes et d'institutions plus que de personnes. On ne peut donc que souhaiter voir ces équipes et ces institutions s'étoffer en hommes et en moyens, se multiplier et collaborer à I'œuvre commune dans un esprit que ne gêne aucune sorte de frontiêre, mais avec le souci primordial de mener à bien, pour longtemps, les tâches fondamentales de documentation.

Si nous énoncions notre sujet sous forme d'une question: l'évangile johannique connaît-il une histoire du salut, nous serions tentés, de prime abord, d'y donner une réponse négative. En effet, le quatrième évangile ne se distingue-t il pas des autres évangiles précisément par le fait que tout se passe, ici, en dehors d'une histoire ‘horizontale’? Ne s'agit-il pas d'un ‘nunc aeternum’, d'une irruption du ‘tout autre’ dans chaque instant, d'une histoire dont le symbole ne serait pas la ligne, mais le point? Le prologue de cet évangile ne place-t-il pas, à priori, la pensée johannique sur un plan opposé à celui de l'histoire du salut? L'affirmation concernant la relation entre Jésus et Jean-Baptiste à la fin de ce prologue: ‘celui qui vient après moi a été avant moi, car il a été le premier par rapport à moi’, ne prouve-t-elle pas que Jésus-Christ, pour cet évangéliste, signifie ‘fin de l'histoire’? La déclaration du Christ johannique au chap. viii. 58: ‘avant qu'Abraham ne füt, je suis’, ne confirme-t-elle pas que la perspective n'est plus celle de l'histoire du salut? D'autre part, la tension entre ‘ce qui est déjà accompli’ et ‘ce qui n'est pas encore achevé’, cette tension si caractéristique de toute la pensée du Nouveau Testament et qui marque une évolution temporelle, ne disparaît-elle pas dans notre évangile, puisque tout y est accompli en Christ? Le jugement qui a lieu déjà (chap. xii. 31, νυν κρίσıς έστίν), la résurrection déjà réalisée (chap. xi. 25), ne mettent-ils pas en évidence que l'eschatologie johannique n'est plus une eschatologie temporelle dans le sens d'une histoire du salut?
